  • The present study describes the prediction of the flow induced noise level of a high-speed rotating hexagonal disk and proposes the way how to reduce it. Since a hexagonal disk, which is used in the laser printer and named a polygon mirror, has six sharp comers, there are low and high pressure regions on each of six edges when it rotates. Therefore, the Pressure difference generates three dimension flow field and causes aerodynamic noise. The Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings(FWH) method is employed for the analysis. We have measured the sound pressure levels and compared them with the computational results. The calculated sound pressure levels agree well with the experimental results. We modified the shape of the edges of a hexagonal disk to reduce the noise level and confirm their effects through numerical computation.

  • Among various elements to affect customer's evaluation of vehicle quality, BSR(Buzz, Squeak, Rattle) are considered to be a mostly contributing factor. In this paper, we provide the test method which can be used to reduce the BSR noise of instrument panel in a vehicle. First, potential source regions of the instrument panel for BSR are localized by using the vibration-excitor and near-acoustic field visualization system. Then, subjective evaluation of BSR noise from the detected potential noise source regions is made with the Zwicker's loudness and time-varying loudness methods. This illustrative analysis reveals that current experimental methods can be used as a test procedure to systematically tackle BSR issues in early stage of the vehicle development cycle, which can result in the reduction of the production cost.

  • This paper proposes an efficient array beamforming method using spatial matched filtering for ultrasound imaging. In the proposed method, ultrasound waves are transmitted from an array subaperture with fixed transmit focus as in conventional array imaging. At receive, radio frequency (RF) echo signals from each receive channel are passed through a spatial matched filter that is constructed based on the system transmit-receive spatial impulse response. The filtered echo signals are then summed. The filter remaps and spatially registers the acoustic energy from each element so that the pulse-echo impulse response of the summed output is focused with acceptably low side lobes. Analytical beam pattern analysis and simulation results using a linear array show that the proposed spatial filtering method can provide more improved spatial resolution and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) compared with conventional dynamic receive focusing (DRF) method by implementing two-way dynamically focused beam pattern throughout the field.

  • A high intensity focuses ultrasound (HIFU) is one of the emerging technologies in the biomedical field. The piezoelectric HIFU transducer is a device that utilizes the thermal energy generated by high ultrasound energy. Recently an operating frequency of the HIFU transducer is to expand above a 7 MHz. In this study, the acoustic pressures and temperature distributions in the tissue that generated by the HIFU transducer at 10 MHz were calculated with the finite element method. In addition, the pressure focusing characteristics of the device were analyzed. The geometrical variables are the piezomaterial thickness, lens shape, water height, and film thickness. The results shown that the acoustic pressure increased and saturated gradually when the height/radius (HL/RL) ratio of the lens increased. Moreover, the focal area was gradually decreases with HL/RL ratio of the lens. In case of the optimized HIFU transducer, the maximum pressure and temperature were analyzed about 19 MPa and 65℃ respectively. And the -3 dB focused distances in the axial and lateral direction are around 2.3 mm and 0.23 mm respectively.

  • Solar energetic transients, e.g., flares, CMEs, etc., release large amount of energy which is expected to excite acoustic waves (p-modes) by exerting mechanical impulse of the thermal expansion of the flare on the photosphere. We study the p-mode properties of flaring and dormant active regions (ARs) to find association between flare and p-mode parameters. We compute the magnetic and flare activity indices of ARs using the line-of-sight magnetograms and GOES X-ray fluxes, respectively. The p-mode parameters are computed from the ring-diagram analysis. We correct p-mode parameters for magnetic field, filling factors and foreshortening by multiple linear-regression analysis. Our analysis of several flaring and dormant ARs observed during the Carrington rotations 1980-2109, showed strong association of mode parameters with magnetic and flare activities. We find that the mode parameters are contaminated by the geometrical effect. Mode amplitude decreases with angular distance from the solar disc centre. The mode width increases with magnetic activity while amplitude showed opposite relation due to mode absorption by the sunspot. After correcting modes due to all geometrical effects, magnetic activity and filling factor, we find that the modes amplitude, and mode energy increases with flare energy while width shows opposite relation.

  • This paper presents the lousing characteristics and the time. response of ultrasonic focusing transducer which is a coupled system with an electromechanical and an acoustical component. The Finite Element Method and the Hybrid Type Infinite Element Method are applied for the analysis. The position of the focal points and the resolutions is obtained from the loosing characteristics and the time response. It is found that the transducer with the damper, which stabilizes the displacement of the radiation surface, gives a better resolution. In conclusion, the results could be applied to the design and the performance analysis of the ultrasonic focusing transducer.

  • In this paper, sunroof buffeting analysis for Hyundai simple model(HSM) is studied computationally. For validation, the velocity profile of boundary layer around the opening of HSM was obtained and compared with experimental results. The analysis of sunroof buffeting is done in two parts. First a steady state solution is obtained using the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) solver, and then the computed flow field information is used as input for CAA++. Second transient simulation by CAA++ is performed for the peak sound pressure levels and peak frequencies of buffeting noise over the ranges of flow velocities. The benchmark results of frequency and sound pressure levels showed the general phenomena and matched well with the experimental data obtained by Hyundai Motor Car.

  • Since more than two decades, the conventional PD detecting systems have been employed in order to detect the partial discharges occurring inside the HV power apparatus for their diagnosis by use of different type of detection such as acoustic and UHF detection method. Regardless of their wide on-site application, a certain number of technical inconveniences have been disclosed as follows : multistage amplification. large volume, susceptible to external noise and high price. In this respect, the optical measurement techniques are widely proposed in these days in this concerned field ascribed to the following advantages : immune to external EMI noise and broad band response of the Pockels cell covering from DC to GHz. However, the reliability of several proposed techniques enabling to measure the electric field inside the large high power apparatus has not yet been well approved In this work, an optical measuring system, based on the Pockels effect, has been developed for measuring the field variation due to the corona discharges occurring in air and in oil. This system consists of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, multi mode optical fiber, polarizing film, Y-cut LiNbO3 cell, photo detector, digital oscilloscope and personal computer with GPIB. For this purpose, optical probe has been specially designed and realized and put into the needle-plane electrode. Afterward, same measurement is carried out in oil. We demonstrate the characteristic of the optical measuring system and the measurement results.

  • The digital data were obtained using Kennedy 9000 magnetic tape deck which was connected to the SMS960 side scan sonar during the field operations. The data of three consecutive survey tracks near Seongsan-po, Cheju were used for the development of this study. The softwares were mainly written in Fortran-77 using VAX 11/780 MINI-COMPUTER (CPU Memory; 4MB). The established mapping system consists of the pretreatment and the digital processing of seafloor image data. The pretreatment was necessary because the raw digital data format of the field magnetic tapes was not compatible to the VAX system. Therefore the raw data were read by the personal computer using the Assembler language and the data format was converted to IBM compatible, and next data were communicated to the VAX system. The digital processing includes geometrical correction for slant range, statistical analysis and cartography of the seafloor image. The sound speed in the water column was assumed 1,500 m/sec for the slant range correction and the moving average method was used for the signal trace smoothing. Histograms and cumulative curves were established for the statistical analysis, that was purposed to classify the backscattering strength from the sea-bottom. The seafloor image was displayed on the color screen of the TEKTRONIX 4113B terminal. According to the brief interpretation of the result image map, rocky and sedimentary bottoms were very well discriminated. Also it was shown that the backscattered acoustic pressurecorrelateswith the grain size and sorting of surface sediments.

  • In order to investigate the radiation of sound from the King Song-Duk bell, we measured the sound pressure around the bell at every 30$^{\circ}$ using a microphone line array which was composed of 30 microphones separated by 15cm;total number of measurement point was 360. The sound field was estimated by using cylindrical acoustic holography. The spectrum of measured sound pressure demonstrates that it is almost like white noise in the very beginning, but in 10 seconds two close frequency components(64.06Hz, 64.38Hz) remain and make a famous beating. This beating sound is often believed to make unique sound of the King Song-Duk bell. The mode shapes of that frequency components are the same except that one is rotated by 45$^{\circ}$ from the other. This phenomenon occurs at the other pairs of components are the same except ones in very high frequency range where the mode shapes are rather complex.
