  • In this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld quality (such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of the engine exhaustive valve (SUH3-SUH35 dissimilar steels of 12.3mm, 16mm, 20mm, and 24mm in diameters) were performed, comparing with the other FRW matches of materials such as SUH3 to SUH31, STS303 and SUH3 to STS304. As an important result, the techniques for dissimilar friction welding optimization of engine heat resisting steels SUH3 and SUH35 (12.3mm, 16mm, 20mm, and 24mm) and its real-time weld quality evaluation by AE was developed, considering on both diameter and carbon equivalent effects.

  • From a manufacturing standpoint it would be desirable to monitor the degradation of drawing die, that is essential for the maintenance of quality, the evaluation of product integrity and the reducing scrap. Acoustic emission is powerful method in monitoring fine wire drawing process, especially in detecting the die fracture at early stage. Experiments at so suggested that acoustic emission signals contained valuable information regarding the stage of a drawing process such as the surface appearance of products and the condition of lubrication. Using these informations makes AE monitoring techniques a possible tool in monitoring the drawing process operation. In order to approach this, this paper discusses the nature of acoustic emission signals produced in drawing process under various conditions. Experimental results are presented which illustrate the effects of wire and die material, lubricants, and drawing speed on the generation and the mean voltage level of acoustic emission signals. The results from these tests give controlling factors of acoustic emission generation.

  • The purpose of the present study is to establish structural noise analyzing method for apartments building floor with structural-acoustic coupling analysis modeling. Noise through floor in the room is recognized as a significant problem with the consequence that noise isolation technique has been studied in the various fields of industry. From among noise factors, resonance sound is the main reason for solid noise of the floor, which is occurred by mechanical vibrations of the acoustic boundary line and the change of velocity. To analyse this phenomenon, numerical computation methods are provided in many fields, In this study, evaluation method for slab is established using finite element method, and a case study for analyzing acoustic phenomenon was suggested. The results show that numerical method, especially F.E.M, has a good approximation to predict noise at floors.

  • Recently, the wide range of the composite materials is used for the making airplanes, trains and automobiles body for the lightweight. Despite having complex structures, composite materials usually have well defined mechanical characteristics. However, composite materials are difficult to understand the fracture mechanism clearly by simple mechanical test. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) combined with mechanical testing can play a more important role and especially Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) would become known to be a useful tool to assess damage and fracture behavior of composites. In this study The experiment was performed to acquire the acoustic emission signal during tensile test using unidirectional CFRP specimen and the data was analyzed the acoustic emission parameters with the waveform.

  • The field application of acoustic emission(AE) testing for brand-new metal pressure vessel were performed. We will introduce the test procedure for acoustic emission test such as instrument check distance between sensors, sensor location, whole system calibration, pressurization sequence, noise reduction and evaluation. The data of acoustic emission test contain many noise signal, these noise can be reduced by time filtering which based on the description of observation during AE test.

  • The egg white phantom is a thermal lesion visualization phantom able to illustrate a thermal lesion. It is often used to evaluate the performance of HIFU and is less expensive than the BSA phantom. This study determined the optimal phantom composition for evaluated therapeutic ultrasound machines by varying the egg white concentration in the egg white phantom and demonstrated its utility as a therapeutic ultrasound phantom. The egg white phantom at varying egg white concentrations (10-40% in 10% intervals) was fabricated, and its thermal properties and acoustic properties were assessed. In addition, the size and shape of the formed lesion were compared between the egg white phantom and bovine liver tissue according to the electrical power. The results showed that 30% egg white phantom was optimal for the performance evaluation due to its thermal and acoustic properties. The generated thermal lesions formed sequentially as a cigar, ellipse, tadpole, and cone shapes according to the electrical power; a similar tendency was observed in the liver tissue. Hence, we conclude that the egg white phantom will prove useful in quantitatively evaluating the thermal effects of therapeutic ultrasound.

  • Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena to determine total mechanical properties in composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured by optical microscopic method and acoustic emission (AE) as functions of matrix toughness and surface treatment by the electrodeposition (ED), and then two methods were compared. Two AE sensors were attached on the epoxy specimen and fiber fracture signals were detected with elapsed time. The interfacial shear stress (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test and AE system. In ED-treated case, the number of the fiber fracture measured by an optical method and AE was more than that of the untreated case. The signal number measured by AE were rather smaller than the number of fragments measured by optical method, since some fiber fracture signals were lost while AE detection. However, one-to-one correspondence between the x-position location by AE and real break positions by optical method was generally established well. The fiber break source location using AE can be a valuable method to measure IFSS for semi- or nontransparent matrix composites nondestructively (NDT).

  • Acoustic Emission(AE) technique has been applied to not only material characterization evaluation but also on-line monitoring of the structural integrity. The AE source location technique is very important to identify the source, such as crack, leak detection. Since the AE waveforms obtained from sensors are very difficult to distinguish the defect signals, therefore, it is necessary to consider the signal analysis of the transient wave-form. In this study, we have divided the region of interest into a set finite elements, and calculated the arrival time differences between sensors by using the velocities at every degree from 0 to 90. A new technique for the source location of acoustic emission in fiberboard plates has been studied by introducing Wavelet Transform(WT) do-noising technique. WT is a powerful tool for processing transient signals with temporally varying spectra. If the WT de-noising was employed, we could successfully filter out the errors of source location in fiberboard plates by arrival time difference method. The accuracy of source location appeared to be significantly improved.

  • An acoustic emission technique is applied to the tensile tests of the plastic specimen under the different test speeds and the structural integrity evaluation of the plastic shell structure. Several AE characteristics are acquired from the tensile tests and they are proven to be useful parameters in evaluating its structural integrity. The results shows that tensile strength has almost constant value over some higher speed region while revealing some increasing tendency in strength as the test speeds up in lower speed region. The crack initiation loads and locations are accurately evaluated during the static compression testing of the plastic shell structures by using acoustic emission technique.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences of the speech rate according to the area in the perceptual and acoustic analysis. This study examines regional variation in overall speech rate and articulation rate across speaking situations (picture description, free conversation and story retelling) with 14 normal adult (7 in Gyeongnam and 7 in Honam area). The result of an experimental investigation shows that the perceptual speech rate differs significantly between two regional varieties of Koreans with a picture description examined here. A group of Honam speakers spoke significantly faster than a group of Gyeongnam speakers. However, the result of the acoustic analysis shows that the speech rate of the two groups did not differ. And there were significant regional differences in the overall speech rate and articulation rate on the other two speaking situation, free conversation and story retelling. It suggest that we have to study perceptual evaluation with regard to the free conversation and story retelling in future research, and based on the results of this study, a variety of researches on the speech rate will be needed on the various conditions, including various area and SLPs who have wider background and experiences. It is necessary for SLPs to train and experience more to assess patients properly and reliably.
