  • In this work, we present an underwater acoustic transducer with a cavity-type head mass to achieve a wide frequency bandwidth. We analyzed the effects of design variables on the transducer characteristics, and optimized the structure of the Tonpilz transducer based on the analysis results. Further, validity of the design was verified by manufacturing a prototype of the transducer and measuring its properties. The designed transducer had a far wider -6 dB fractional bandwidth which is 131 % than that of a single mode transducer, and the measured results were confirmed to be in good agreement with the analysis results.

  • A computational study on the enhancement of parallel supersonic-subsonic mixing wakes is conducted and compared with available experimental data. The first aim of the present work is to show a direct comparison between numerical predictions and equivalent experimental data for the baseline case. The Pitot pressure distribution data are in good agreement between computation and experiment, and the results show that Menter's SST model with the compressibility correction gives the best performance. Further we investigate the effects of primary parameters such as the position of the cavity, and the arrangement of the cavity at the given flow condition.

  • This study was aimed for ultrasonographic assessment of the tympanic membrane and the tympanic bulla in five healthy Beagle dogs. To improve an ultrasonographic image, the ear canal was filled with warm saline, and an 11 MHz linear probe and a 6.5 MHz convex probe were used. The structures of ear component such as ear canal, ear cartilage and tympanic membrane were easily identified. Especially, tympanic membrane was presented as a reflaction surface which was resulted from the different acoustic impedence between the fluid-filled anechoic ear canal and the gas-filled hyperechoic tympanic cavity in normal dogs. In five left-side ears, the saline was infused into the external ear canal after the tympanic membrane had been ruptured experimentally. Both anechoic fluid-filled ear canal and tympanic cavity were clearly identified. In five right-side ears, the surgically fluid-filled tympanic cavity was imaged as a hypoechoic oval shaped structure. When tympanic cavity and ear canal have been contained with fluid, it was difficult to identify whether the tympanic membrane was ruptured or not. For assessment of the ear structure with ultrasonography, the 11 MHz linear probe was considered as an optimal equipment for a serial assessment of ear canal, tympanic membrane and tympanic bulla whereas the 6.5 MHz convex probe was suitable to assess the tympanic cavity. The results suggest that ultrasonography with saline infusion into the ear canal can be used to find the intactness of the tympanic membrane and to assess the fluid- filld tympanic bulla.

  • The panel contribution analysis to reduce interior booming noise of a passenger car is carried out using both experimental method and numerical one. The accelerations of panels are measured on the outer surface of car body during operation. The acoustic characteristic of cavity is represented by two different ways. One is the acoustic transfer function obtained by experiment with reciprocal manner. The other is the boundary element model and numerical results of the model are calculated using SYSNOISE. The results from numerical method show more good agreement with measured sound pressure levels than the experimental one. Contributions of panels for interior noise are ranked and structure of the car is reinforced according to the results, which shows that the panel contribution analysis is a powerful tool to lessen structure-borne noise of passenger vehicle.

  • Recently, piezoelectric materials have attracted considerable attention because of its self-sensing and actuating properties. To model smart structures, numerical modeling of structures with piezoelectric devices is essential. As many factors affect the performance of smart structures, optimization of these parameters is necessary. In this paper, the shape design sensitivity analysis of the 3D piezoelectric and structural elements is developed and shape optimization is performed. For the evaluation of the sensitivity, the finite element method is used. For the shape sensitivity, the domain velocity field is calculated. An acoustic cavity model is presented as a numerical example to study the feasibility of the formulation. The continuum sensitivity is compared with the results of the finite difference method by ANSYS. And the sequential linear programming (SLP) algorithm is used as the optimization algorithm.

  • Noise reduction and control is an important problem in the performance of underwater acoustic system and on the habitability of the passenger ship for crew and passenger. Furthermore, sound generated by a propeller is critical in underwater detection and is often related to the survivability of the vessel especially for military purpose. Generally propeller noise is often the dominant noise source of marine vehicle. The flow field is analyzed with potential-based panel method, and then the time dependent pressure and sheet cavity volume data are used as the input for Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings formulation to predict the far-field acoustics. Through this study, the dominant noise source of underwater propeller is analyzed, which will provide a basis for proper noise control strategies.

  • Helmholtz resonator is widely used acoustic instrument which has high absorption characteristics at its resonance frequency. Particularly it maintains good performance even in the low frequency region that is difficult to control by general porous absorptive materials. However, under severely high sound pressure level, the absorption characteristics are changed by increase of resistance due to nonlinear behavior of neck impedance. Because of this nonlinear behavior, it is difficult to obtain the expected absorption performance under high sound pressure environment. Thus, in order to prevent excessive rise of resistance, the resonator with neck having cross section dimension decrease away from the entry of the resonator cavity could be suggested. This paper introduces the experiment method and results about nonlinear characteristics of Helmholtz resonator with tapered neck and proposes the approximate nonlinear impedance model.

  • The objective of the paper is to demonstrate the noise reduction characteristics of an air-gap resonator, which is composed of an air gap and a partition sheet. By means of installing the air-gap resonator in an enclosed cavity, acoustic resonance can be effectively suppressed using a small space. In particular, it is revealed from a simple, one-dimensional model that the air-gap resonator serves as the Helmholtz resonator that generally absorbs acoustic resonance energy at its resonance frequency. As a result, the air-8ap resonator also has a resonance frequency, which can be predicted with a simple frequency equation derived in the paper. Finally, verification experiments show that the air-gap resonator can be effectively designed by predicting a reasonable gap thickness using the simple frequency-equation.

  • It is desirable to predict the noise and vibration problems of a passenger car in its design stage for a better ride quality. Dominant frequencies of the noise inside a car range from about 50 Hz to 300 Hz and these are frequently caused by the coupling of the acoustic normal modes of the compartment cavity and structural modes of the body. In this paper, car interior noise problem is investigated in view of vibration-acoustic modes coupling and numerical simulation is performed on the interior noise. In the simulation, experimental modal data of the vehicle structure are utilized to improve the accuracy of the analysis. The results are in good agreement with those of experiment on a half scaled vehicle compartment model. Especially, strongly coupled modes can be predicted, which give useful informations to solve noise problems of real car at design stage.
