The main objective of this study is to determine if the sources of AE in corroded specimens of aluminum could be identified iron the characteristics of the waveform signals recorded during fatigue loading. Coupons of notched 2024-T3 aluminum with or without corrosion (at the notch) were subjected to fatigue loading and the AE signals were recorded using non-resonant, flat, wide-band transducers. The time history and power spectrum of each individual wave signal recorded during fatigue crack growth were examined and classified according to their special characteristics. Five distinct types of signals were observed regardless of specimen condition. The waveform and power spectra were shown to be dependent on specimen condition. During the initial phase of crack growth, the signals obtained in the as-received specimens are most probably due to transgranular cleavage caused by extrusion and intrusion under fatigue loading. In the corroded specimen the signal are probably generated by intergranular cleavage due to embrittlement of grain boundary neat the pitting tip. The need for additional research to further validate these findings is indicated.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP) have gained increased application in aerospace structures because of their specific strength and stiffness, but are sensitive to impact-induced damage. An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the impact resistance of CFRP according to the ply angle. The specimens of angle ply laminate composites were employed with [0.deg. $_{6}$/ .deg.$_{10}$/0.deg.$_{6}$], in which 6 kinds of ply angle such as .deg.=15.deg., 30.deg., 45.deg., 60.deg., 75.deg. and 90.deg. were selected. The impact tests were conducted using the air gun type impact testing machine by steel balls of diameter of 5 mm and 10 mm, and impact-induced damages were evaluated under same impact speed of V=60m/s. The impact damaged zones were observed through a scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). The obtained results were summarized as follows: (1) Delaminations on the interfacial boundaries showed th directional characteristics to the fiber directions. The delamination area on the impact side (interface A) was considerably smaller compared to that of the opposite side (interface B). (2) Cracks corresponding to other delaminations than those mentioned in SAM photographs were also seen on the impact damaged zone. (3) The delamination patterns were affected by the ply-angle, the dimensions of the specimen, and the boundary conditions. (4) The impact damaged zone showed zone showed the delamination on the interfacial boundaries, transverse shear cracks of the surface layer, and bending cracks of the bottom layer.r.r.r.

This paper reviews the state-of-the-art thermoacoustic(TA) modeling techniques and research trend to predict major parameters determining combustion instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustors. Linear TA modeling results give us an information on eigenfrequencies and initial growth rate of the instabilities. For the prediction, linear relation equation between acoustic waves and heat release oscillations should be derived in the determined system. Key information for this analysis is to determine the heat release fluctuations in the combustor, which is typically obtained by using n-${\tau}$ function from flame transfer function measurements and/or predictions. Great advancement in the linear TA modeling has been made over a couple of decades, and some successful prediction results have been reported in actual gas turbine combustors. However nonlinear TA model developments which are required to analyze nonlinear system behaviors such as limit cycle saturation and transition phenomena are still limited in a very simple system. In order to fully understand combustion instabilities in a complicated real system, nonlinear flame dynamics and acoustic wave interaction with nonlinear system boundary conditions should be explained from the nonlinear TA model developments.
This paper describes a method of detecting formation boundaries, and permeable fractures, from frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs. Field data sets were collected between the depths of 330 and 360 m in well EE-4 in the Higashi-Hachimantai geothermal field, using a monopole acoustic logging tool with a source central frequency of 15 kHz. Stoneley wave amplitude spectra were calculated by performing a fast Fourier transform on the waveforms, and the spectra were then collected into a frequency-depth distribution of Stoneley wave amplitudes. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave log shows four main characteristic peaks at frequencies 6.5, 8.8, 12, and 13.3 kHz. The magnitudes of the Stoneley wave at these four frequencies are affected by formation properties. The Stoneley wave at higher frequencies (12 and 13.3 kHz) has higher amplitudes in hard formations than in soft formations, while the wave at lower frequencies (6.5 and 8.8 kHz) has higher amplitudes in soft formations than in hard formations. The correlation of the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log with the logs of lithology, degree of welding, and P-wave velocity is excellent, with all of them showing similar discontinuities at the depths of formation boundaries. It is obvious from these facts that the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log provides useful clues for detecting formation boundaries. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs are also applicable to the detection of a single permeable fracture. The procedure uses the Stoneley wave spectral amplitude logs at the four frequencies, and weighting functions. The optimally weighted sum of the four Stoneley wave spectral amplitudes becomes almost constant at all depths, except at the depth of a permeable fracture. The assumptions that underlie this procedure are that the energy of the Stoneley wave is conserved in continuous media, but that attenuation of the Stoneley wave may occur at a permeable fracture. This attenuation may take place at anyone of the four characteristic Stoneley wave frequencies. We think our multispectral approach is the only reliable method for the detection of permeable fractures.

In this paper, the resonant characteristics and modes of the film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) used in 1~2 GHz frequency region are analyzed by it's input impedance which was calculated by three dimensional finite element method formulated as eigenvalue problem using electro-mechanical wave equation and boundary condition. It was extracted that the resonant and the spurious characteristics considering the effects of electrode area and shape variation and unsymmetry of upper and lower electrode. Those effects couldn't be analyzed by on dimensional analysis, e.g. Mason equivalent model. The simulation result was confirmed by comparing with the simulation data from Mason model analysis and the measured data of the ZnO FBAR fabricated using micro-machining technique. Also, through the simulation of the area variations of FBAR, it was obtained that the optimum ratio of length and thickness is 20:1 and the minimum ratio is 5:1 to operate thickness vibration mode.

In this paper, the performance of the selective combining according to the channel selection decision method of frequency diversity is evaluated in the underwater frequency selective channel. The underwater acoustic channel in the shallow sea has a complex multipath characteristic by combining various environmental factors such as boundary surface reflection and sound wave refraction according to the water temperature layer. In particular, frequency selectivity due to multipath causes energy fluctuation in a communication channel, which reduces SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) and deteriorates communication performance. In this paper, we applied the frequency diversity technique using multiple channels to secure the communication performance according to the frequency selectivity by multipath. For each channel, 4-FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) and selective combining were applied, the performance was evaluated by applying the maximum value, average value, and majority decision of the signal in order to decide the demodulation channel selection of the selective combining.

In the study, energy flow analysis is performed to predict the performance of silencers. To date, deterministic approaches such as finite element method have been widely used for silencer analysis. However, they have limitations in analyzing large structures and mid-high frequency ranges due to unreasonable computational costs and errors. However, silencers used for ships and off-shore plants are much larger than those used in other engineering fields. Hence, energy governing equation, which is significantly efficient for systems with high modal density, is solved for silencers in ships and off-shore plants. The silencer is divided into two different acoustic media, air and absorption materials. The discontinuity of energy density at interfaces is solved via hypersingular integrals for the 3-D modified Helmholtz equation to analyze multi-domain problems with the energy flow boundary element method. The method is verified by comparing the measurements and analysis results for ship silencers over mid-high frequency ranges. The comparisons confirm good agreement between the measurement and analysis results. We confirm that the applied analysis method is useful for large silencers in mid-high frequency ranges. With the proven procedures, energy flow analysis can be performed for various types of silencer used in ships and off-shore plants in the first stage of the design.

Transfer path analysis(TPA) and panel contribution analysis(PCA) have been used widely to reduce interior noise of mechanical systems. TPA enables us to decompose interior noise into air-borne and structure-borne noises and estimate the path contribution of noise sources. PCA is also used to identify the noise contribution of each sub-panel in vibro-acoustic systems. In this paper, TPA and PCA are applied to wheel loader, one of the heavy construction equipments. Firstly, TPA for air-borne noise is conducted to estimate the contribution of air-borne sources using pressure transfer function. Thereafter, TPA for structure -borne noise is employed to verify the results of air-borne source quantification through the synthesis of two results. Secondly, PCA is performed by both TPA using pressure transfer function between panels inside the cabin and boundry element method(BEM) for the cabin of wheel loader with various boundary conditions. As a results, it was found that TPA conducted by experiments and PCA accomplished by both experiments and BEM are very effective methods in analyzing the path and contribution of the noises for reducing an interior noise level in the wheel loader system.

In order to find the current structure between Sori Island and Yokji Island in the South Sea of Korea, water movements were measured in May, June, October and November of 2004 using ADCP(acoustic doppler current profiler). In the southwestern part of Yokji Island, northeastward flow in whole of depth was dominant by mean current The boundary layer between the upper layer and lower layer was formed between 15m and 20m and each layer different flow. The upper and lower layers have a different direction and speed of currents. In the calculated volume transport, the northeastward transport was greater than southwestward.
The goal of using numerical methods in this study is two-fold: to replicate a set of measured, individualized HRTFs by a computer simulation, and also to visualise the resultant sound field around the head. Two methods can be wed: the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Infinite-Finite Element Method (IFEM). This paper presents the results of a preliminary study carried out on a KEMAR dummy-head, the geometry of which was captured with a high accuracy 3-D laser scanner and digitiser. The scanned computer model was converted to a few valid BEM and IFEM meshes with different polygon resolutions, enabling us to optimise the simulation for different frequency ranges. The results show a good agreement between simulations and measurements of the sound pressure at the blocked ear-canal of the dummy-head. The principle of reciprocity provides an effect method to simulate HRTF database. The BEM was also used to investigate the total sound field around the head, providing a tool to visualise the sound field for different arrangements of virtual acoustic imaging systems.
