  • The main role of an acoustic diffuser is to diffuse reflected sound field spatially. Since the pioneering work of Schroeder, there have been investigations to improve its performance by using shape/sizing optimization methods. In this paper, a gradient-based topology optimization algorithm is newly presented to find the optimal distribution of reflecting materials for maximizing diffuser performance. Time-harmonic acoustic analysis in a two-dimensional acoustic domain is carried out where the domain is discretized by finite elements. Perfectly matched layers are placed to surround the domain to simulate non-reflecting boundary conditions. Design variables are assigned to each element of which material properties are interpolated between those of air and those of a rigid body. An approach to extract the reflected field from the total acoustic field is employed. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, design problems are solved at different frequencies. The performance of the optimized diffusers obtained by the proposed method is compared against that of the conventional Schroeder diffusers.

  • This paper reports on the research which investigates acoustic signals acquired in turning with rough and finish simultaneously. The material is aluminum thin pipe. Two acousto-ultrasonic sensors were set on the finish and the rough bite of the CNC machine. It was first evaluated that one source was affected by the other. It was found that two signals were little affected each other, and that the acoustic signal from the finish bite was more related to the surface defects. Signals from the finish bite only were then analyzed in order to observe several types of surface defects. Second the fundamental experiments were accomplished to study the effects of machine vibration and material state. The signal characteristics due to surface defects were studied from the collected acoustic signals. The analysis was based on real time data, root mean squared average and frequency spectrum by fast fourier transform. As a result, the acoustic signals were made effects by machine condition, material structure. The acoustic signal from the finish bite was closely correlated with surface quality. Two types surface micro defects were then evaluated by the signal characteristics.

  • Objective : To explore and analyze the influencing factors of facial nerve function retainment after microsurgery resection of acoustic neurinoma. Methods : Retrospective analysis of our hospital 105 acoustic neuroma cases from October, 2006 to January 2012, in the group all patients were treated with suboccipital sigmoid sinus approach to acoustic neuroma microsurgery resection. We adopted researching individual patient data, outpatient review and telephone followed up and the House-Brackmann grading system to evaluate and analyze the facial nerve function. Results : Among 105 patients in this study group, complete surgical resection rate was 80.9% (85/105), subtotal resection rate was 14.3% (15/105), and partial resection rate 4.8% (5/105). The rate of facial nerve retainment on neuroanatomy was 95.3% (100/105) and the mortality rate was 2.1% (2/105). Facial nerve function when the patient is discharged from the hospital, also known as immediate facial nerve function which was graded in House-Brackmann : excellent facial nerve function (House-Brackmann I-II level) cases accounted for 75.2% (79/105), facial nerve function III-IV level cases accounted for 22.9% (24/105), and V-VI cases accounted for 1.9% (2/105). Patients were followed up for more than one year, with excellent facial nerve function retention rate (H-B I-II level) was 74.4% (58/78). Conclusion : Acoustic neuroma patients after surgery, the long-term (${\geq}1year$) facial nerve function excellent retaining rate was closely related with surgical proficiency, post-operative immediate facial nerve function, diameter of tumor and whether to use electrophysiological monitoring techniques; while there was no significant correlation with the patient's age, surgical approach, whether to stripping the internal auditory canal, whether there was cystic degeneration, tumor recurrence, whether to merge with obstructive hydrocephalus and the length of the duration of symptoms.

  • Macroperforations improve the sound absorption performance of porous materials in acoustic cavities and in waveguides. In an acoustic cavity, enhanced noise reduction is achieved using porous materials having macroperforations. Double porosity materials are obtained by filling these macroperforations with different poroelastic materials having distinct physical properties. The locations of macroperforations in porous layers can be chosen based on cavity mode shapes. In this paper, the effect of variation of macroporosity and double porosity in porous materials on noise reduction in an acoustic cavity is presented. This analysis is done keeping each perforation size constant. Macroporosity of a porous material is the fraction of area covered by macro holes over the entire porous layer. The number of macroperforations decides macroporosity value. The system under investigation is an acoustic cavity having a layer of poroelastic material rigidly attached on one side and excited by an internal point source. The overall sound pressure level (SPL) inside the cavity coupled with porous layer is calculated using mixed displacement-pressure finite element formulation based on Biot-Allard theory. A 32 node, cubic polynomial brick element is used for discretization of both the cavity and the porous layer. The overall SPL in the cavity lined with porous layer is calculated for various macroporosities ranging from 0.05 to 0.4. The results show that variation in macroporosity of the porous layer affects the overall SPL inside the cavity. This variation in macroporosity is based on the cavity mode shapes. The optimum range of macroporosities in poroelastic layer is determined from this analysis. Next, SPL is calculated considering periodic and nodal line based optimum macroporosity. The corresponding results show that locations of macroperforations based on mode shapes of the acoustic cavity yield better noise reduction compared to those based on nodal lines or periodic macroperforations in poroelastic material layer. Finally, the effectiveness of double porosity materials in terms of overall sound pressure level, compared to equivolume double layer poroelastic materials is investigated; for this the double porosity material is obtained by filling the macroperforations based on mode shapes of the acoustic cavity.

  • Acoustic modes of a vehicle compartment dominate the noise characteristics of the vehicle system in the low frequency range. Vehicle compartments have head liner and air gap of proper thickness to mount a interior lamp, as well as to have a good sound insulation and absorption performance. This study estimates the acoustic modal property of the medium size passenger car by experiment and by finite element analysis and also, investigates the effect of the head liner on the acoustic mode of the passenger compartment to obtain useful information for low noise compartment design.

  • This paper presents the numerical prediction of sound generated by viscous flow past a circular cylinder. The two dimensional flow field is predicted using FEM based Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver, and the calculated unsteady fluid field values are utilized by an acoustic code that implements Ffowcs Willianms-Hawkings(FW-H) equation. The integration surface used in acoustic analysis is extended from the cylinder surface to permeable surfaces. The 2D based CFD calculations overpredict the acoustic amplitude, however, if adequate correlation length is used, the predicted acoustic amplitude agrees well with experiment. The predictions using extended integral surface in FW-H equation show results that contain the characteristics of quadrupole - volume integration - noise term, and do not vary seriously with the integral surface location.

  • Internal & External duct acoustic fields are calculated by using a finite element method. The geometry is assumed as an axisymmetric duct. External acoustic field; outside the duct, and combined internal & external acoustic fields are solved. For both cases a far field's nonreflecting boundary condition is enforced by using a wave envelope element, which is a kind of finite element. First, a pulsating sphere and an oscillating sphere problem are calculated to verify the external problems, and the results are compared with exact solutions. When the wave envelope element is applied at the far boundary, the calculated finite element solutions show good agreements with the exact solutions. Secondly, the combined internal & external duct acoustic fields are calculated and visualized when monopole sources are distributed inside the duct. It is observed that the directivity of sound intensity outside the duct is beaming toward the axis for high frequency sources.
