  • We investigated the bacterial and chemical retting conditions of ramie grown in Hansan. Bacterial retting was done in troughs at a temperature of 30${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$ for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 days. Chemical retting(CR) was done at the different conditions using sodium silicate (Na$_2$SiO$_3$), sodium carbonate(Na$_2$CO$_3$) and sodium hydroxide(NaOH) as alkali solutions. The retting solution was boiled during 1. 2, 4 and 6 hours respectively at the different concentration(0.5, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0. 8.0 %) with decorticated ramie stems submerged in it. The treated ramie was then rinsing with running tap water thoroughly, which was further soaker in 0.5% acetic acid (v/v) solution for three minutes and washed thoroughly with distilled water. Finally ramie was dried for 2 hours in vacuum oven at 100 $^{\circ}C$. To know change of ramie fiber characteristics retted at the different conditions, weight loss, fiber bundle strength were tested and color, texture, luster etc. were also sensually evaluated. The results were as follows. $.$ Weight loss of ramie retted in each alkali solutions were about 10%, 20% and 30% in sodium silicate, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide, respectively. $.$ Chemical retting was faster than bacterial retting, but the color of chemically retted ramies were worse than that of bacterially retted ramies. $.$ The combination of bacterial and chemical processing showed some merits. A combination of either 2 or 3 days of bacterial and then chemical retting might provide the best quality ramie. $.$ Ramie fiber became cottonized ramie when retted in 8% NaOH solution for 6-8hours.

  • The $NiSO_4$ supported on FeO-promoted $ZrO_2$ catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method. FeOpromoted $ZrO_2$ was prepared by the coprecipitation method using a mixed aqueous solution of zirconium oxychloride and iron nitrate solution followed by adding an aqueous ammonia solution. The addition of nickel sulfate (or FeO) to $ZrO_2$ shifted the phase transition of $ZrO_2$ (from amorphous to tetragonal) to higher temperatures because of the interaction between nickel sulfate (or FeO) and $ZrO_2$. 10-$NiSO_4$/5-FeO-$ZrO_2$ containing 10 wt % $NiSO_4$ and 5 mol % FeO, and calcined at 500 ${^{\circ}C}$ exhibited a maximum catalytic activity for ethylene dimerization. $NiSO_4$/FeO-$ZrO_2$ catalysts was very effective for ethylene dimerization even at room temperature, but FeO-$ZrO_2$ without $NiSO_4$ did not exhibit any catalytic activity at all. The catalytic activities were correlated with the acidity of catalysts measured by the ammonia chemisorption method. The addition of FeO up to 5 mol % enhanced the acidity, surface area, thermal property, and catalytic activities of catalysts gradually, due to the interaction between FeO and $ZrO_2$ and due to consequent formation of Fe-O-Zr bond.

  • The hydration effect on the intrinsic magnetism of natural salmon double-strand DNA was explored using electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectroscopy and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetic measurements. We learned from this study that the magnetic properties of DNA are roughly classified into two distinct groups depending on their water content: One group is of higher water content in the range of 2.6-24 water molecules per nucleotide (wpn), where all the EMR parameters and SQUID susceptibilities are dominated by spin species experiencing quasi one-dimensional diffusive motion and are independent of the water content. The other group is of lower water content in the range of 1.4-0.5 wpn. In this group, the magnetic properties are most probably dominated by cyclotron motion of spin species along the helical π -way, which is possible when the momentum scattering time (${\tau}_k$) is long enough not only to satisfy the cyclotron resonance condition (${\omega}_c{\tau}_k$ > 1) but also to induce a constructive interference between the neighboring double helices. The same effect is reflected in the S-shaped magnetization-magnetic field strength (M-H) curves superimposed with the linear background obtained by SQUID measurements, which leads to larger susceptibilities at 1000 G when compared with the values at 10,000 G. In particular, we propose that the spin-orbital coupling and Faraday's mutual inductive effect can be utilized to interpret the dimensional crossover of spin motions from quasi 1D in the hydrate state to 3D in the dry state of dsDNA.

  • We demonstrated the sensitivity of optically active single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a diameter below 1 nm that were homogeneously dispersed in cement composites under a mechanical load. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was selected as the dispersing agent to achieve a homogeneous dispersion of SWCNTs in an aqueous solution, and the dispersion state of the SWCNTs were characterized using various optical tools. It was found that the addition of a large amount of DNA prohibited the structural evolution of calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate hydrate. Based on the in-situ Raman and X-ray diffraction studies, it was evident that hydrophilic functional groups within the DNA strongly retarded the hydration reaction. The optimum amount of DNA with respect to the cement was found to be 0.05 wt%. The strong Raman signals coming from the SWCNTs entrapped in the cement composites enabled us to understand their dispersion state within the cement as well as their interfacial interaction. The G and G' bands of the SWCNTs sensitively varied under mechanical compression. Our results indicate that an extremely small amount of SWCNTs can be used as an optical strain sensor if they are homogeneously dispersed within cement composites.

  • Scaffold fabrication technology using a 3D printer was developed for damaged bone tissue regeneration. A scaffold for bone tissue regeneration application should be biocompatible, biodegradable, and have an adequate mechanical strength. Moreover, the scaffold should have pores of satisfactory quantity and interconnection. In this study, we used the polymer deposition system (PDS) based on fused deposition modeling (FDM) to fabricate a 3D scaffold. The materials used were polycaprolactone (PCL) and alginic acid sodium salt (sodium alginate, SA). The salt-leaching method was used to fabricate dual pores on the 3D scaffold. The 3D scaffold with dual pores was observed using SEM-EDS (scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy) and evaluated through in-vitro tests using MG63 cells.

  • To improve the dyeability of polyurethane (PU) resin, low molecular weight diols containing dye site in the molecular structure was added as a chain-extender. PU resin were synthesized with the variations in the chain extender, polyol type, and hard segment/soft segment (HS/SS) ratio. When HS/SS ratio is 1.4 and dimethylolpropionic acid(DMPA) or N-butyldiethanolamine (BDEA) was used as a chain extender, because of heterogeneity of reaction mechanical properties were diminished. But when N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) was used as a DCE, and HS/SS ratio lowed to 1.3, mechanical properties and dyeability improved. In particular, when linear type 1,4-BD was formulated with MDEA, hydrolysis resistance and mechanical properties of PTMG type PU was improved. And initial elasticity, tensile strength and elongation could be controlled by the variation of HS/SS ratio, DCE mixing ratio of 1,6-HD or NPG.

  • ZnAl-LDH(layered double hydroxide) modified with oleic acid(SO-ZnAl LDH) was synthesized and added to the flame retardant ABS compounds containing brominated epoxy resin(BER) and antimony trioxide(${Sb_2}{O_3}$). Flame retardant ABS compounds were manufactured by using a twin-screw co-rotating extruder and subsequently injection molded into several specimen for flame retardancy and mechanical properties. The XRD patterns of ABS nanocomposites showed no peaks. The thermal stability of ABS nanocomposites was enhanced by the addition of SO-ZnAl LDH as shown in TGA results. However, these nanocomposites showed no rating in the UL 94 vertical test at 1.6 mm thickness. Only ABS nanocomposites with additional BER more than 1.5 wt% showed UL 94 V0 rating. Notched Izod impact strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break of flame retardant ABS nanocomposites increased with the proportion of So-ZnAl LDH whereas their melt index decreased.

  • Recently, it has been reported that chemical hair coloring can cause allergic reactions, the toxicity issue of chemical hair color was issued. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the hair coloration technique using non-toxic and bio-compatible hair color gotten from natural resource. In this study, the possibility using fermented Indigo as natural hair coloring agent was investigated. Bleached hair samples were dyed using Indigo, and the effect of dyeing frequency, the physical change after dyeing, color, surface and cross-section characteristics, and tensile property were also studied. In addition, the protection property of cationic detergent finishing on damaged hair samples were also studied. The following conclusions are made; 1. While bleached hair samples with low value showed the negligible effect of repeated dyeing, bleached hair samples with high value showed the good effect of repeated dyeing. 2. Hair sample dyed with Indigo showed a high light-fastness, however, tensile strength and elongation showed very low values (high damage on hair sample). 3. Cationic detergent finishing did not affect on the colorfastness because of decoloration after dyeing, however, it increased the smoothness of hair sample, and therefore, can use as protectant of damaged hair. 4. Hair scale was damaged after dyeing. It seemed that the alkali, potassium carbonate, increased pH of dyeing bath to 11, as a result, the hair was swollen, weaken, and dissolved on the prolonged dyeing time. Dyed hair sample became stiff and fine. 5. The color difference was 4.62 (a high fastness value) in the test of sunlight exposure, shampoo, cationic detergent finishing, and acid perspiration fastness.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the possibility for water treatment, and to evaluate the efficiency of simultaneous removal of ammonium and nitrate by the surface modified zeocarbon. The surface modification was done by acid treatment using HCl. As a result of modification, strength of the modified zeocarbon was enhanced about 62% higher than that of in original one. This indicates that the modified zeocarbon was suitable for the application of water treatment. In the removal experiments of ammonium and nitrate, the removal efficiency showed about two times higher in the modified zeocarbon and the dependences of pH and temperature were found to be minimized. This indicates that the modified zeocarbon was effective for simultaneous removal of ammonium and nitrate from aqueous solution. Consequently, our results could be used as basic data to design of one-stage ammonium/nitrate simultaneous removal system.

  • The characteristics of cesium and cobalt removal from soil around the TRIGA reactor using the electrokinetic method were analyzed and a device to restrain the pH increase in the soil column was suggested. When a NaCl solution was used as the electrolyte to raise the electric field strength, a precipitate was formed in the cathode in the soil column, resulting in a low removal efficiency. Thus, an acetate buffer solution (compound solution of $CH_3COONa$ and $CH_3COOH$) was injected into the soil column and acetic acid was periodically infected into the cathode reservoir to restrain any pH increase. Many $Cs^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ ions were transferred by electromigration rather than electroosmosis during the initial remediation period, and no precipitate was formed in the soil column. 96% of the total amount of cesium in the soil column was removed after 5.9 days, while 94% of the total amount of cobalt was removed. Furthermore, the residual concentrations predicted by the developed model were similar to those obtained by experiment.
