  • To evalutate the change in shear bond strength according to dentin surface treatment, 4 materials were divided into control group(A) and experimental group(B). Group A was treated according to the instruction of manufacture. Group B was treated with 32% phosphoric acid. After dentin surface treatment, each material was bonded and stored in 100% humidity during 7 days, and then, the shear bond strength was evaluated. The results were as follows: 1. In the case of treatment according to the instruction of manufacture, the shear bond strength according to material showed Z-100 to be highest with 12.42 MPa, Compoglass had the lowest shear bond strength with 4.23 MPa and there was significant difference between Compoglass and Z-100, Dyract (p<0.01). 2. The group treated with 32% phosphoric acid showed lower shear bond strength than that of the group treated according to the instruction of manufacture but there was no statistical significance. 3. As a result of observation under SEM, the fracture pattern was a mixture of cohesive and adhesive failure in group 1, and there was more adhesive failure in group 2, and in group 3 and 4 there was cohesive failure of material or tooth structure. From the results above Dyract showed shear bond strength levels between resin and resin -modified glass ionomer but Compoglass showed much lower shear bond strength than that of resin-modified glass ionomer thus indicating that even though they are the same type of material they show evident differences in physical properties. And it is thought that the treatment of dentin surface with phosphoric acid did not increase the shear bond strength, unlike enamel.

  • Statement of problem. Porcelain repair mainly involves replacement with composite resin, but the bond strength between composite resin and all-ceramic coping materials has not been studies extensively. Purpose. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of composite resin and ceramic etching pattern on shear bond strength of Empress2 ceramic and observe the change of microstructure of ceramic according to etching methods. Material and methods. Eighty-five cylinder shape ceramic specimens (diameter 5mm, IPS Empress 2 core materials) embeded by acrylic resin were used for this study. The ceramic were specimens divided into sixteen experimental groups with 5 specimens in each group and were etched with phosphoric acid(37%, 65%) & hydrofluoric acid (4%, 9%) according to different etching times(30s, 60s, 120s 180s). All etched ceramic surfaces were examined morphologically using SEM(scanning electron microscopy). Etched surfaces of ceramic specimens were coated with silane (Monobond-S) & adhesive(Heliobond) and built up composite resin using Teflon mold. Accomplished specimens were tested under shear loading until fracture on universal testing machine at a crosshead speed 1mm/min; the maximum load at fracture(kg) was recorded. Shear bond strength data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and Duncan tests.(P<.05) Results. Maximum shear bond strength was $30.07{\pm}2.41(kg)$ when the ceramic was etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid at 120s. No significant difference was found between phosphoric etchant group and control group with respect to shear bond strength. Conclusion. Empress 2 ceramic surface was not etched by phosphoric acid, but etched by hydrofluoric acid.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which were purified by etching in 25% $H_2SO_4/HNO_3$ solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, were modified via plasma polymerization coating of acrylic acid, allylamine or acetylene, and then utilized to prepare PEI/CNT composites. First, plasma polymerization conditions were optimized by measuring the solvent resistance of coatings in THF, chloroform and NMP, and the tensile strength of PEI/CNT (0.5%) composites as a function of plasma power (20~50 W) and monomer pressure (20~50 mTorr). The tensile strength of PEI/CNT composites was further evaluated as a function of CNT loading (0.2, 0.5 and 1%). Finally, FT-IR was utilized to provide a better understanding of the improved tensile properties of PEI/CNT composites via plasma polymerization coating of CNTs. Plasma polymerization of acrylic acid greatly enhanced the tensile strength of PEI/CNT composites, as did allylamine but to a lesser degree, while acetylene plasma polymerization coating decreased tensile strength.

  • The present paper reports the life time prediction of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene rubber (NBR) fuel cell gasket materials as a function of operational variables like acid concentration, ageing time and temperature. Both material and accelerated acid-heat aging tests were carried out to predict the useful life of the NBR rubber gasket for use as a fuel cell stack. The acid ageing of the gasket compounds has been investigated at 120, 140 and $160^{\circ}C$, with aging times from 3 to 600 h and increasing acid ($H_2SO_4$) concentrations of 5, 6, 7 and 10 vol%. Material characteristics the gas compound such as cross-link density, tensile strength and elongation at break were studied. The hardness of the NBR rubber was found to decrease with decreasing acid concentration at both 120 and $140^{\circ}C$, but at $160^{\circ}C$ interestingly the hardness of the NBR rubber increased abruptly in a very short time at different acid concentrations. The tensile strength and elongation at break were found to decrease with increase in both the acid concentrate ion & temperature. The life time of the compounds were evaluated using the Arrhenius equation.

  • In order to enhance water permeability through the improvement of fouling phenomena and wettability of hydrophobic porous membranes, various adsorption materials, i.e., poly(vinyl amine), poly (styrene sulfonic acid), poly(vinyl sulfonic acid), and poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) were adsorbed onto the surface of polyethylene (PE) porous membrane. The concentration of adsorption solutions, adsorption time, the sort of salts and their ionic strength were varied, and the pure water permeability of their resulting adsorbed membranes was measured. In general, water permeability increased with an initial increase in the concentration of adsorption solution, adsorption time, and ionic strength and then decreased with a further increase. The pure water permeability of 375 $L/m^2h$(LMH), 35% enhancement, was obtained at a condition of poly(vinyl sulfonic acid) 1000 ppm, $Mg(NO_3)_2$ ionic strength(IS) 0.1, and adsorption time 150 sec, while the 50% (411 LMH) and 35% (374 LMH) enhancements were obtained at conditions of poly(styrene sulfonic acid) 1000 ppm, adsorption time 60 sec, and NaCl IS 0.1 and 0.2, respectively.

  • In this paper, setting and mechanical properties of cement mortar using retarding agents are investigated. According to the experimental results, as dosage of retarding agents increases, flow and ar content of mortar are shown to be higher. Flow loss of mortar using retarding type water reducing agents is larger than that using gluconic acid by 3 times. As for setting time it is found that mortar using gluconic acid takes much longer setting time than that using retarding type water reducing agent. In case of compressive strength, when retarding agent is applied, cement mortar gains high strength compared with that of plain mortar. However, we can not measure compressive strength of cement mortar contaning more than 0.6% of gluconic acid.

  • Wool fabrics were treated with deep UV for 10 to 30min and then dyed with C.I. Acid Yellow 99, C.I, Acid Red 57 and C.I. Acid Blue 62. FT-IR and XPS have been used to prove the chemical composition of wool fiber surfaces. The mechanical property and colorfastness were also studied. The intencities of the peaks of C=O group at $1700^cm^{-1}$ were increased with increasing irradiation time. Relative $O_{1s},\; N_{1s}\; and\; S_{2p}$ intensities increased considerably and oxygen was incorporated in the form of CO and COO on the fiber surface. The dye uptakes of wool fabrics dyed with three acid dyes were proportional to irradiation times and in inversely proportional to irradiation distances. It was found that the tensile strength of wool fabrics were gradually deteriorated with the UV irradiation times. The colorfastness, such as washing, light and rubbing, of UV irradiated wool fabrics dyed with acid dyes were good.

  • Paperboards used for linerboard of corrugated fiberboard box were coated with different concentrations of polylactic acid (PLA) solution and the effects of harsh environmental conditions such as high humidity and temperature (96% RH at $30^{\circ}C$ for up to 5 days), and freeze-thaw ($-20^{\circ}C$ for a day and then thaw at room temperature for 30 min) conditions on the ring crush (RC) strength of the boards were investigated. One to five percent PLA solutions were coated onto SC manila linerboard ($20{\times}27cm$) using a No. 20 wire bar coater and the ring crush strength was measured using a computer-controlled Advanced Universal Testing System in accordance with TAPPI Test Method T 822 om-93. The RC strength increased significantly when the concentration of coating solution increased and appreciable changes were found when the concentration increased from 0 to 2% (P<0.05). Similar pattern of results was found after 5-day storage at $30^{\circ}C$ and 96% RH. Although such highly humid condition increased moisture content in the samples up to 3.95 from 0.97 times, the RC strength decreased in the range from 29.9 to 48.5%. The freeze-thaw treatment increased the moisture content only up to 1.27% and the reduction in the RC strength ranged from 21.1 to 28.1 %. The results were promising: the samples coated with 5% PLA solution showed 29.9% reduction in the RC strength while that of control was 48.5% during highly humid condition stated above.

  • In this work, the post-treatment using organic acids during hair dyeing process was used to maintain hair color and to decrease hair damage. The effect of post-treatment using succinic acid and tartaric acid during hair dyeing process with cherry red and blue silver color on the persistence of hair color, tensile strength of hair, hair porosity, and surface characteristics of hair was investigated. After the repeated shampooing process, the experimental group with succinic acid and tartaric acid could more efficiently maintain the hair color than control group. The experimental group with succinic acid and tartaric acid could also increase the tensile strength of hair, decrease the hair porosity, and smoothen the hair surface, compared with control group. Particularly, tartaric acid was able to maintain the color of the dyed hair and protect the hair with higher efficiency than succinic acid.

  • The production of biodiesel by transesterification of waste frying oil was conducted on various zeolite catalysts with different acidity and pore structure. $H^+$ ion exchanged MOR, MFI, FAU, and BEA zeolites were employed in the reaction with silicalite which has no strong acid sites. $H^+$ ion exchanged MOR(10) zeolite, which has more acid sites and stronger acid strength than other zeolites, exhibited the highest methyl esters yield as 95%. Dealumination to the HMOR zeolite induced decreasing of acid amount and acid strength. It brought about the decrease of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield. The yield increased linearly with enhancing of acid strength and increasing of amount of strong acid sites. The yields were independent on pore structure of the zeolites.
