  • A study on acidity in precipitation was carried out during May 1990 - April 1991 at two sites in Chongwon, Choongbook. We observed variations of pH from 4.0 to 7.0. Annual mean value of pH was 5.21 in the area. In particular, strong acidity of rain fall, pH 4.0 were observed during winter to early spring. Neutral values were observed during June to July and were due to wet deposition of atmospheric pollutants by stationary fronts in the rainy season. Interestingly, acidity of snow observed in winter was neutral and it was weaker than the acidity of rain in winter by a value of 2.0. Discussion is made on meteorological and chemical analyses and seasonal variations of acidity of precipitation.

  • Scientists in the National Institute of Environmental Research had carried out air and precipitation sampling. According to the data analysed, the acidity (pH) measured was in the range of 3.7 $\sim$ 5.5. Detailed analysis indicated that observed acid rain was associated with westerlies generally coming out of the mainland of China and with a cyclone formed therein. Emission of air pollution from Korea and Japan also appeared to contribute in the observed high acidity in some cases. The one of chief reasons for the occurrence of acid rain in the west coast of Korea was due to the increase in the total emission of air pollution in China. In 1990, China was the world's top producer of coal amounting in 1.05 B tons with an annual increase of 10%, and the produced 100 M tons of crude oil. $SO_2$ emission from all energy usage in China was estimated at 25 $\sim$ 50 M ton per year.

  • Backward trajectory analysis was carried out for 41 cases at 850 hPa level and 47 cases at 700 hPa level during the period from May 1992 to August 1993 in order to understand the impact of long-range transported pollutants from the neighboring countries on the distribution pattern of acid rain in Korea. The occurrence frequencies of acid rain were also investigated using the rainwater data observed at 5 stations in the central part of Korea, Kangwha, Seoul, Yangpyong, Hongchon, and Inje. The trajectory analysis showed that westerlies were dominant on 700 hPa level and southwesterlies on 850 hPa level in Korea. The pH values were also often lower when the trajectory was stagnant in the upper air over Korea. However, pH values were normally higher in all directions of flows during the Yellow Sand Period due to the increase of Positive ion components such as $Ca^{+2}$. The pH values were also normally higher when air flows from north or northeast.

  • Corrosion behavior of welded SWS400 steel used for bridges was studied in a range of the acid-rain environment using immersion, potentiodynamic polartization, polarization resistance, and galvanic corrosion tests. The SWS400 steel exhibited active corrosion behavior in the range of acid-rain environment, i.e. no passivation. As the results of immersion corrosion test, Tafel extrapolation method, and polarization resistance measurement, the average corrosion rats of the steels were 0.31-0.72 mm/year in the pH of 4-5, and 0.17 mm/yera in the pH 6, respectively. The steel showed a resistance to corrosion in the pH 6. The observed active behavior of SWS400 steel in chloride-containing environment indicated that the chloride ions exerts a detrimental influence on the formation of passive films. Galvanic corrosion was observed between the weld and the base metals because the weld is anodic to the base metal.

  • The effects of acid rain and salt content on corrosion behavior were investigated with rolling stock structural steels be caused by environmental. Since these materials are exposed to the corrosive environments like polluted air, acid rain and sea water, it is important to investigate corrosion behaviour in various corrosive environments. The aqueous corrosion of the characteristic materials in aerated acid rain and neutral solution were studied by using immersion tests, electrochemical measurements and analytical techniques. In order to examine corrosion characteristic, structural steels were electrochemically evaluated with respect to the dissolved oxygen content, pH, chloride ion concentration.

  • The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effects of acid rain on tree growth and on the mycorrhizal formation and the effects of mycorrhizae on the host tolerance to acid rain. Simulated acid rain was applied for five months to Pinus $rigida{\times}taeda$ seedlings in pots inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) and Suillus luteus (Sl). Mycelial inocula of Pt and Sl were either mixed with entire pot soil (Mix) or casted as a band (Band) after soil sterilization. Three pH levels of acid rain (pH 3.0, 4.5 and 6.4 adjusted by 3 : 1 mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids) were tested. Pt-Mix was most effective in growth stimulation and resulted in 45-90% increase in tree height in sandy loam. Pt-Band was less effective than Pt-Mix in growth stimulation and mycorrhizal formation. Simulated acid rain at pH 4.5 stimulated height growth by 10-55%, while acid rain at pH 3.0 did not significantly affect the height growth. The top/root ratio was increased by pH 4.5 treatment, while pH 3.0 treatment reduced it. Mycorrhizal infection rate was not affected by acid rain. Pt inoculation reduced acid-induced leaf injury by 28-58% in both pH 3.0 and 4.5 compared with un-inoculated plants. Sl was also effective in growth enhancement, but was less effective than Pt in both mycorrhizal infection and reducing leaf injury.

  • Artificial acid rain(pH2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) was treated on the seeded pots of 4 species to examine its effects on germination, leaf injury and seedling growth. Aluminum ammonium sulfate solution (0.5, 1.0 and 2.5mM) and artificial acid rain (pH3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) were treated on the seeded germinators of 3 species to examine its effects on germination and radicle growth. Artificial acid rain was prepared by diluting sulfuric acid with ground water and ground water(pH6.5) was used as control. Artificial acid rain was sprayed to seeded pots three times per week. About 5mm of artificial acid rain was treated each time from early April to early October, 1991. Germination, seedling establishment, radicle growth, leaf injury and seedling growth were measured and compared among the treatments. The results were summarized as follows 1. Germination, seedling establishment rate of Pinus densiflora were highest on the pH5.0 pot whereas those of Ailanthus altissima was highest on the control pot, and those of Magnolia sieboldii showed the highest value on the pH3.0 pot. 2. The differences in seedling height of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were significant among the treatment levels of acid rain, whereas those of Magnolia sieboldii and Ailanthus altissima were not significant. Seedling heights of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were highest on the pH3.0 pot, and that of Magnolia sieboldii was highest on the pH4.0 pot, and that of Ailanthus altissima was highest on the control pot. 3. Seedling dry weights of Pinus densiflora. Pinus rigida, and Ailanthus altissima differed significantly among the treatments, but that of Magnolia sieboldii did not differ. Highest seedling dry weights of Magnolia sieboldii and Ailanthus altissima were observed on the pH4.0 pot, and that of Pinus densiflora was observed on the pH3.0 pot, and that of Pinus rigida was observed on the pH5.0 pot. 4. With decrease of pH value of artificial acid rain, the number of injured needle and injured individual tended to be increased. 5. The differences in effects of soil acidity were highly significant among the treatments for all species. 6. Radicle growth of Pinus densiflora differed significantly among pH levels and aluminum concentrations.

  • The influence of acid rain on the marble cultural properties investigated in two ways : 1) marble samples similar to that of Wongak-sa 10-story pagoda were directly exposed to rain in air at Chongro and Kwanghwamun sites; 2) marble samples under a protective facility were indirectly exposed to rain. The quantity of corrosion products and variations of calcium ion to rain were analyzed. The result shows that the corrosion qantity of the marble samples exposed directly under 1~8 mm rainfall in the Chongno and Kwanghwamun sites were similar, but those were 7.7 times higher than those indoor. Concentration of anions were higher than that of cations among the ion concentration over 40% in the early 1 mm rainfall. Calcium ion was produced over 30%. Because the monuments of marble, limestone and sandstone were affected by acid rain, it may be necessary to establish policies for the conservation on the National Treasures made of these materials.

  • Studies were carried out to examine the effects of simulated acid rain on the various crops of rice, peper, tomato, pumpkin, egg plant, potato, soybean, radish, cucumber, common pea, sweet potato, corn, lettuce, chinse cabbage, spinach, under the condition of the rains of pH 3.0. The rain was adjusted to pH 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 with sulfuric acid, and soybeans were exposed with the various pH levels, eighteen times every other days. The symptoms of damage, ratios of destroyed leaf and sulphur content by leaves were investigated. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The exposure to the rain resulted in the reddish brown or white pigment spots in the leaves surface and the colour was developed red and darker along the edge of spots. 2. Most crops were affected with acid rain of pH 3.0 at which the amount of chlorophyl was decreased. 3. The spinach, chinese cabbage, lettuce were sensitive to the acid rain, however, the peper, tomato pumpkin were resistance to it. 4. The content of chlorophyl was decreased with increasing leave injury. 5. The sulphur content in leave was increased with increasing acidity of the rain, however the yield was decreased.

  • The individual and combined effects of acidic rain, Mg deficiency (-Mg) and Al surplus (+Al) on the growth of shoots and roots of pitch pine seedlings and the effect of humic substances (Lit) on Al toxicity were investigated. The growth of height and dry matter were not significantly less for pitch pine seedlings sprayed with simulated acid rain (SAR) of pH 3.5 than for those sprayed with SAR of pH 5.6. But treatments of Al and +Al-Mg in soil solution reduced the growth of seedlings in terms of height of shoots, and dry matter of shoots or roots. Effect of Mg deficiency on the growth of seedlings was apparent only when Al was treated simutaneously. The growth of seedlings, regardless of rain pH, decreased in the following order: control=-Mg>Lit+Al>+Al>+Al-Mg. Treatments of Al and +Al-Mg in soil solution reduced the total length of secondary and teritary roots of seedlings regardless of rain pH, and decreased in the following order: the primary root
