  • The effects of acid-treated MWCNT and coupling agent on properties of MWCNT/SBR are investigated in this work. The MWCNTs oxidized using sulfuric and nitric acids were analyzed by the Raman scattering and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). The FT-IR results indicate the presence of -COOH groups in the treated samples, and Raman spectroscopy of the acidtreated MWCNTs further corroborates the formation of surface defect due to the introduction of carboxyl groups. And the nanocomposites reinforced with MWCNTs were characterized extensively using the scanning electron microscopy(SEM), electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and tensile properties measurements. The results showed that nanocomposites onto acid-treated MWCNTs enhanced mechanical properties compared to those containing MWCNTs without acid treatment. These findings confirmed the improved interfacial interactions between MWCNTs and SBR arising from the coupling agents. But the electrical and thermal conductivity of nanocomposites decreased due to the chopping and formation of surface defects of MWCNTs.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage by porous zeolite-slag ceramics (ZS ceramics) that was prepared by adding wood flour as pore-foaming agent while calcining the mixtures of natural zeolite and converter slag. The batch test showed that the removal efficiency of heavy metals by pellet-type porous ZS ceramics increased as the particle size of wood flour was decreased and as the weight mixing ratio of wood flour to ZS ceramics was increased. The optimal particle size and weight mixing ratio of wood flour were measured to be $75{\mu}m$ and 7~10%, respectively. The removal test with the porous ZS ceramics prepared in these optimal condition showed very high removal efficiencies: more than 98.4% for all heavy metals and 73.9% for sulfate ion. Relative to nonporous ZS ceramics, the increment of removal efficiency of heavy metals by porous ZS ceramics with $75{\mu}m$ and 10% wood flour was 5.8%, 60.5%, 36.9%, 87.7%, 10.3%, and 57.4% for Al, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn, respectively. The mechanism analysis of removal by the porous ZS ceramics suggested that the heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage are eliminated by multiple reactions such as adsorption and/or ion exchange as well as precipitation and/or co-precipitation.

  • The influence factors for char yield in the carbonization process of natural cellulose are the carbonization temperature, the heating rate and the atmosphere in the furnace. In general, it is well known that the improvement of char yield is expected under the conditions of the lower carbonization temperature, the slower heating rate and the presence of inert gas in the furnace. In this study, it has been investigated the effect of the heating rate control with sulfuric acid as a dehydrating agent for the improvement of char yield in the carbonization process of natural cellulose. The cellulose treated with sulfuric acid has shown the weak dependency of heating rate in char yield, whereas the untreated cellulose has shown the strong dependency. These findings clearly suggest that it can be useful to control heating rate with appropriate dehydrating agent in the carbonization process to improve the char yield and shortening the carbonization time.

  • Chitosan is a polysaccharide with cationic amino groups in its structure and has useful properties as functional materials. Various end-use developments of chitosan are in progress. When the cotton fabric is pretreated with chitosan, the hand property of cotton fabric may be improved expecially for the summer apparel. In this study, as a cross-linking agent to introduce chitosan into cotton, BTCA(butane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid) or CA(citric acid) was added in order to prevent detachment of chitosan by the cross-linking. During the cross-linking procedure, via the padding-drying-heat setting, amino groups of chitosan and hydroxyl groups of cotton, carboxyl groups of BTCA/CA are cross-linked by forming anhydrous cyclic rings. Since BTCA has four carboxyl groups, cross-linking by thermal treatment is easy, leading to the trials in wrinkle-recovery treatment of cotton fabrics. However, the high price of the BTCA reagent has been a shortcoming in the actual application for industrial use. Therefore, in this study, we tried the application of CA having three carboxyl groups, which is relatively low priced, as the substituting cross-linking agent. The hand of the treated fabrics were evaluated by measuring physical properties. In addition, based on the physical properties, three-dimensional images were introduced by using 3D CAD systems and results were compared.

  • Gentisic acid is a skin-whitening agent which inhibits the tyrosinase activity, an essential enzyme in the process of biological synthesis of melanin. Since melanin is synthesized in melanocytes located between the viable epidermis and dermis layer, drug amount delivered into the epidermis/dermis layer can provide valuable information for the biological effect of skin-whitening agents. The purpose of this study was to prepare the gentisic acid patches with 2% dodecylamine as enhancer, and to observe the in vitro skin permeation and in vivo skin deposition of gentisic acid. Gentisic acid in DuroTak 87-2510 patch formulation permeated across hairless mouse skin at the rate of $40.79\;{\mu}g/cm^2/hr$. In vivo study showed that the gentisic acid amount in both the stratum corneum and the viable epidermis/dermis increased with the increase of application time. The amount of gentisic acid in the stratum corneum was higher than that in the epidermis/dermis layer, and was expected to provide a reservoir effect even after removing the patches. Thus, the patch formulation seems to be useful for the topical delivery of skin-whitening agent into the epidermis/dermis layer, the target site.

  • Four fatty acid vinyl esters were synthesized by transesterification between vinyl acetate and lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, respectively. Fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers were prepared from polymerization of four fatty acid vinyl esters in the presence of potassium persulfate in methanol. The ${\alpha}-sulfonation$ of these four fatty acid vinyl ester oligomer were carried by direct addition of sulfur trioxide. Especially, molecular weights of sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers were measured by boiling point method.

  • An acid amplifier is defined as an acid-generating agent which is decomposed autocatalytically to produce new strongly acidic molecules in a non-liner manner, The addition of the acid amplifiers to conventional chemically amplified photoresists consisting of photoacid generators and acid-sensitive polymers result in the improvement of photosensitivity due to the amplified generation of catalytic acid molecules as a result of the decomposition of acid amplifiers. We synthesized and evaluated 1-hydroxy-4-tosyloxy cyclohexane(AA-1) and 1,4-ditosyloxy cyclohexane(Ah-2) as novel acid amplifiers. The acid amplifiers(AA-1, AA-2) showed reasonable thermal stability for resist processing temperature. As estimated by the sensitivity curve, tort-butyl methacrylate homopolymer(ptBMA) film doped with AA-1 or 2 exhibited much higher photosensitivity than ptBMA film without AA-1 or 2. And AA-1 showed higher effect than AA-2 on enhancing photosensitivity of ptBMA film.

  • Microencapsulation of nalidixic acid using Eudragit RL, a methacrylic acid copolymer was investigated. Microcapsules were prepared by dispersing the drug solution in liquid paraffing using aluminium tristearate as dispersing agent. The preparation of the microcapsules showed high reprodulibility in particle size, shape and the drug content. The dissolution rates of Nalidixic acid from the these microcapsules considerably decreased as compared with that from Nalidixic acid powder and Nalidixic acid-Eudragit RL solid dispersions. The release of Nalidixic acid increased with increasing percentage of aluminium tristearate added to the microcapsules.

  • The effects of phenolic acids on inhibition of browning by the Maillard reaction were investigated with a glucose-glutamic acid model for doenjang with citric acid as the antibrowning agent and phenolic acid as its synergist. Five phenolic acids, cinnamic, coumaric, caffeic, hydroxybenzoic, and protocatechuic acids, were used. In order to investigate the antibrowning capacity, 0.1M glucose, 0.1M glutamic acid, 50mM citric acid, and 1mM phenolic acid were dissolved in 1M phosphate buffer (pH 7.0), heated at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24hr in the presence of 0.2mM $FeCl_{2}$, and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ or $30^{\circ}C$ for four weeks. Phenolic acid addition more efficiently inhibited browning during storage at $30^{\circ}C$ than at $4^{\circ}C$, without changes in pH. Hydroxybenzoic acid was the most efficient and increased the antibrowning capacity by 13% compared to sample without phenolic acids. Although caffeic and protocatechuic acids inhibited most the formation of 3-deoxyglucosone or fluorescence, they increased browning by forming colored complexes between two hydroxy groups of phenolic acids and iron ions. Hydroxybenzoic acid will be able to be a useful synergist of citric acid, an antibrowning agent in doenjang, since it is permitted for doenjang.
