  • The achene morphology of 21 taxa of Persicaria sect. Cephalophilon including the related taxa of Koenigia (Polygonaceae) was examined using stereo microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate its diagnostic values and taxonomic implications. The outlines of achene were narrowly ovoid to broadly ovoid in general, and elliptic achenes were observed in Koenigia taxa, with the achene shape being biconvex or trigonous. The size of the P. sect. Cephalophilon taxa ranged from $0.93-3.55{\times}0.80-2.31mm$ and the size of examined Koenigia taxa ranged from $1.10-1.84{\times}0.79-1.02mm$. The smallest achenes in P. sect. Cephalophilon were observed in P. humilis and the largest achenes were found in P. chinensis var. chinensis. Furthermore, infraspecific taxa of P. chinensis had relatively large achenes compared to other taxa within the section. Most taxa of P. sect. Cephalophilon had dull achenes, while four taxa had glossy achenes (P. capitata, P. runcinata var. runcinata, P. runcinata var. sinensis, and P. sinuata). Four types of surface patterns (smooth, tubercles, small pits, and irregular ridge) were observed, and the tubercles were divided into two subtypes according to the grouping and distribution pattern. The achene morphology of P. sect. Cephalophilon is described and compared, and its taxonomic implications are also discussed.

  • This is the first study to deal in-depth with the achene ultra-structure of the genus Launaea Cass. in Egypt. It focuses on 12 taxa belonging to 10 species of this genus. The achene wall anatomy and surface sculpturing of those taxa were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Important aspects of the investigated taxa based on the achene characters as well as SEM micrographs of the achene surface and anatomical sections are given. Main and secondary costa of the inner achenes are used for easy differentiation between L. intybacea and L. massauensis.

  • The achene morphology about 16 taxa of Korean Aster L. sensu lato were investigated to estimate its taxonomic values. The achene shapes were divided into four types; oblanceolate-oblong, obovate, oblong and obovate-oblong. The trichome shape on achene six types; uniseriate-conical, filiform, cylindrical, capitate type, long stalk capitate and globular. Their distributional features on upper part of achene four types; absent, sparse distribution of conical trichome, dense distribution of conical trichome and mixed distribution of conical and capitate trichome. The achene shapes and trichome characteristics were regarded to be a good characters in delimiting taxa because these did not differ among individuals in same taxa, but differ among the taxa. If Korean Aster L. sensu late were divided into Kalimeris, Heteropappus, Aster, Cymnaster, the capitate forms and mixed distribution of conical and capitate trichome were recognized as the good characters in delimting above section such as genus Kalimeris and Heteropappus, section Pseudocalimeris of Aster L. sensu stricto.

  • Variation of morphological and physiological traits of 50 Bidens tripartita accessions were studied and the accessions were grouped through cluster analysis based on four major characters; plant type, leaf partition, achene length, days to flowering. Bidens tripartite accessions have shown significant variations in plant type, stem length, days to flowering, leaf shape, leaf partition, chlorophyll content, leaf color, stem color, achene color, achene length and achene shape. Most of Bidens tripartite accessions appeared to have strong dormancy and also photodormancy with some exceptions. Plants could be classified into 5 types from straight(I) to triangle(V), and intermediate diamond type(III) was prevalent. The plant type score has negative correlation with the stem length. None, three, and five part leaved plants were observed and most of them were three or five parted. Leaf partition had negative correlation with achene length and chlorophyll content. Average days to flowering was 108 days in the range of 94~141 days. It had positive correlation with achene length and leaf shape and negative correlation with achene color. Average achene length was 10.0mm and it had positive correlation with achene shape, stem length, days to flowering and leaf shape. It also had negative correlation with leaf color, stem color, achene color, leaf partition. Bidens tripartite accessions could be divided into identifiable six groups from the cluster analysis at the distance 0.06 using Ward's minimum-variance method.

  • This study were examined for their external morphological characters such as root, leaf, inflorescenses, flower, stamen, pistil, and fruit as to Korean Thalictrum L. and discussed taxanomic value of characters, and made out a new key. This study confirmed that specialized stems and roots type were divided into fibrous type, fibrous having a tuber type, long fusiform tuberous type, tuberoid type, rhizome type and stolon type. The stem were divided into two types based on existence and nonexistence of striate or pubescent. Leaves were usually 2-3-ternately and was divided into three types based on leaf apex, leaf base and number of lobe. Inflorescenses were divided into two type; corymb, panicle. Flower is bisexual, and don't have petal. It was divided from existence and nonexistence of calyx when it flowering. Especially, the stamens were divided from anther shape and apex shape, degree of dilation of filament, epidermic shape of filament etc., and the pistils were divided from glandular on ovary, length of carpel stipe etc.. The fruit is a achene and it was divided from achene shape, achene rib or wings, achene stipe length. This study suggest that useful characters for identifying section are degree of dilation of filament, anther shape, achene rib and wings, degree of dilation of achene. Also, roots, leaf shape, stamen and pistil shape, achene beak and achene length, achene and leaf hair appear to be useful characters for identifying species.

  • Morphological characters of aggregated achenes, and achene and its epidermal microstructures were observed for 7 taxa belonging to the section Adonanthe of subgenus Adonanthe [A. amurensis Regel et Radde, A. bobroviana Sim., A. davidii Franch., A. multiflora Nishikawa et Ko. Ito, A. pseudoamurensis W. T. Wang, A. ramosa Franch. and A. tianschanica (Adolf) Lipsch. ex Bobrov] and for 1 taxon belonging to the section Lophocarpa of subgenus Adonis (A. aestivalis var. parviflora M. Bieb.). The morphological characters such as shape of aggregated achenes, length of aggregated achenes, shape of achene, and recurved type of persistent style were useful in the classification of the subgenera Adonanthe and Adonis, and each species of the series under section Adonanthe. Epidermal microstructures of achene were grouped into three types according to the presence of microwrinkles and their arranged patterns. These microwrinkles were absent in A. amurensis, were of parallel type in A. bobroviana, A. pseudoamurensis, A. ramosa, and A. aestivalis var. parviflora, and were of parallelperpendicular mixed type in A. davidii, A. multiflora, and A. tianschanica. Also, a new key to them was made using morphological characters of their aggregated achenes and achene.

  • Fruit and seed morphological characteristics were investigated in 36 taxa of 20 genera of Korean Ranunculaceae. As a result, fruits were classified as the achene, berry, or follicle type. In the taxa with achene, the presence of trichomes and stoma on the surface of the fruit and a feature in which the endocarp distinctively develops into a one-layer sclereid were considered as useful characteristics. Moreover, in the taxa with follicles, the composition of the seed coat (bitegmic vs. unitegmic), the cell shape of the seed coat, the presence of trichomes, and the type of seed coat were useful for taxonomic characteristics in Korean Ranunculaceae. Based on the fruit and seed characteristics, Adonis is likely to be classified into Helleboroideae rather than Ranunculoideae, as it has bitegmic ovules. In addition, Enemion is similar to Eranthis in unitegmic ovule and the seed coat structure which has non-sclereid exotesta; therefore, it is reasonable to be placed in Helleboroideae. According to the results of this study, more in-depth research is needed regarding the taxonomic positions of Callianthemum and Actaea, which has the only berry fruit type.
