The Relationship Between Cultural Intelligence with Experiences and Personality: Among Korean Students Studying Abroad (문화 지능과 성격, 문화 경험의 관계 탐색: 해외 유학생 표본을 중심으로)

  • This study was conducted to revalidate CQS and to examine the factors influencing cultural intelligence among Korean students studying abroad. 143 Korean students in USA and Canada were participated in the survey. Confirmatory factor analysis identified a model with four factors and CQS has negative correlation with acculturation stress and academic stress but positive correlation with subjective wellbeing. This findings suggest that CQS is a reliable and valid scale. Hierarchical regression analyses confirmed that personality is more significant predictor than cultural experiences for CQS. Discussion focuses on the importance of the findings, limitations and future directions.

Adaptation of Foreign Migrant Workers to the Korean Society through Taekwondo (외국인 이주노동자의 태권도를 통한 한국사회 적응)

  • The purpose of this research is to explore the role of Taekwondo in foreign migrant workers' adaptation process in Korean society, based on segmented assimilation concept by Portes & Zhou(1993) as a theoretical framework. In order to achieve this, an in-depth interview of 13 foreign migrant workers in Gyeonggi-region was carried out by using purpose sampling and theoretical sampling together, and the interview was analyzed using grounded theory method. The analysis result demonstrated that foreign migrant workers understand Korean culture, learn Korean, and interact with Koreans through Taekwondo, which facilitates their acculturation into the mainstream society. Also, they were assimilated into their own subculture of being fascinated by the charms of Taekwondo and trying to become Taekwondo instructors by returning to their home country. Lastly, they built a social network and overcame tough labor and the difficulties of living in a foreign country through Taekwondo. This research is significant as it examined the role of Taekwondo that preserves Korean culture and checked its value, in terms of the adaptation of foreign migrant workers who take a part in the current rearrangement of Korean society into a multicultural society.

  • The world has rapidly become culturally diverse, and Korea has gradually grown into a multicultural society, mainly due to marriage immigrants and foreign laborers, whose number exceeds over one million nationally. Their adjustment and acculturation in Korea, however, dose'nt seem painless and untroubled, and public libraries are in duty to provide multicultural service for these population. Providing useful services on the homepage makes it possible for users to find the information they need without having to visit the actual library. A more detailed research will be conducted by examining the multicultural services provided by the public libraries in Australia, Canada, the United States, and Japan, the leading multicultural societies. The further examination will be conducted on these libraries in terms of four aspects, that is, information, literacy, education, and culture, as declared by Public Library Menifesto. In Korea, translation and interpretation services, homework help, child literacy are necessary services at the public library, Management of independent multicultural site, shared services between Regional Central Library and Community Public Library, cooperation with libraries, government and organization will be helpful to multicultural library services.

  • This research is to study the interaction of multiculture parents in law between. daughter in law. We approached hermeneutical grounded theory and six of multiculture family's parent's in law participated this research. Data were collected by the depth interview and various written records and we could construct 9 hermeutical theme by analyzing and categorizing 83 meaning units, 22 categories. We descripted the process of acculturation between parent's in law and daughter in law. The result as follows : ① sticking self dimensions → ② strategic acceptomce → ③ making shade of co-existence → ④ self dismantling and reconstruction. Finally we proposed the 「joint program of parent's in law and daughter in law for reinforcing culture unpetence」.

A Qualitative case study on the experiences of emigration to Vietnam for Korean older males (한국 고령남성의 베트남 이주경험에 관한 질적사례연구)

  • The goal of this study is to understand the experiences of emigration to Vietnam for Korean older males through a qualitative case study. The specific research questions are following. Firstly, what do they experience through emigration to Vietnam? Secondly, what are the meanings of emigration to Vietnam for them? Thirdly, what are the contextual meanings of it? To explore these questions, the data were collected through diverse data collection methods including in-depth interviews with seven research participants for eleven months. Each case was carefully examined and summarized in the within-case analysis and major issues appeared in each case were described in the cross-case analysis before the reconstitution of story-telling considering a holistic context on the older males' experiences of emigration to Vietnam. The six integrated themes are 'Motivation and background of immigration', 'Acculturation', 'Social network', 'Meaning of work', 'Family' and 'Spirituality and attitude to the life', 'Perceptions on death'. Finally, the critical results were summarized before indicating limits and implications of this study and then some suggestions for following studies are summarized on the conclusion.

Structural Equation Modeling of Health Promotion Behavior on Migrant Workers: A Multi-Group Analysis Based on the Period of Residence (외국인 근로자의 건강증진행위 구조모형: 거주기간별 다중집단분석)

  • Purpose: This study developed and tested a hypothetical model of health promotion behavior on migrant workers based on the Health Promotion Model and the Health Literacy Skills Framework. Methods: Data were collected from 298 migrant workers in 9 regions across the country from December 2020 to March 2021. The exogenous variables were e-health literacy, occupational stress, acculturation, and social support. The endogenous variables were perceived benefits of action, self-efficacy, and health promotion behavior. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 25.0, AMOS 20.0, and R-4.0.3 program. Results: The model fit was appropriate. Social support had the most significant direct impact on the health promotion behavior of migrant workers. Perceived benefits of action and self-efficacy played a mediating role in the relationship among e-health literacy, social support, and health promotion behavior. Based on multi-group analysis, the migrant worker group with less than 5 years of residency had a more statistically significant effect on the relationship between perceived benefits of action and health promotion behavior than those with over 5 years. Conclusion: Providing social support as a critical administrative strategy to enhance the health promotion behavior of migrant workers is necessary. Furthermore, when developing an intervention program utilizing the internal mechanism between social support and health promotion behavior, a self-efficacy-enhancing strategy is considered to be more effective. Additionally, educating migrant workers with short-term residence of less than 5 years about the benefits of health behaviors is essential.

A Study on the Acculturation of Guǐmok(槐木) Plantings through the Remaining Species of Guǐjeong(槐亭) (괴정(槐亭)의 잔존 수종을 통해 본 괴목(槐木) 식재의 문화변용)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine what people in Korea recognize the cultural symbolism and the planting patterns of 'Guǐmok', pagoda tree(Sophora japonica). The species planted in the 'Guǐjeong' was empirically investigated and analyzed to determine which species of pagoda tree or Zelkova tree(Zelkova serrata) was taken through literature surveys, field surveys, and interviews with persons. This 'Guǐjeong' was combined to track how the culture of the 'Guǐmok' planting introduced in China was ultimately accepted and transformed in Korea. In this study, we tried to analyze the meaning implicit in the mystery while checking the distribution of the mystery and the form of the mystery, the name of the pavilion and its relevance to the contrast medium. Essentially, the trees that govern the characterization of the nectar plant, regardless of the region, are considered to be a pagoda tree, which is considered an internal factor in which the pagoda tree culture was not completely transformed into a zelkova tree. It was recognized throughout the Joseon Dynasty that the species representing 'Prime ministers(三公)' was judged from all the Joseon Dynasty periods, based on the builder of Guǐjeong's Aho(雅號) and Dangho(堂號). It was confirmed that the tree was very likely to be planted in place of the painting tree. The difference between the cultural areas of Yeongnam and non-Yeongnam is also considered to be an internal factor that has played a major role in the cultural transformation of planting of 'Guǐmok'.

  • Samul nori/Pungmul-gut is the symbol of ethnic identity for the Koreans abroad. It is the representative diaspora musical genre which is performed many cultural events held by Koreans. It is, at the same time, a global music which is appreciated by not only the Koreans but also the foreigners. Many musical communities in various countries exhibit the cultural migration through the discourse of 'tradition/variation' and 'authenticity/hybridity' in the course of the acculturation and enculturation of samul nori/pungmul-gut. The pungmul-pae 'Bichoe June' active in Toronto, Canada was organized by a foreign performer. For the foreigners pungmul-gut is easy to access as a genre of world music. As a percussion ensemble, it is easy to learn for the foreigners. The pungmul-pae 'Bichoe June' is a 'music community' consist of the Koreans and foreigners. The band tries to preserve the traditionality and authenticity of the Korean music. There is no variation or hybridity in its music since the member still learns the authentic music through various available textbooks and internet sites. Through the participation of the Koreans and foreigners, the band stimulates the globalzation of the pungmul-gut. The enculturation of the pungmul-gut is exhibited in two performances held by the band. One was host by the Canadian progressive group and the other was by the Korean conservative community. The former understood the nature of pungmul-gut as the music of the common people. The latter, however, accepted the music as the representative traditional music but was not easy to enjoy the 'noisy' music. In other words, the positive/negative acceptance of the pungmul-gut depends of the ideological nature of the listeners rather than the ethnical nature.

  • This study overseas compatriots in the North during the propagation and development of dance patterns and was going to be based, people living outside of the dance culture as a group of overseas Koreans, especially dance culture of Koreans in Japan, China are interested in and thought about the necessity of the study.   • Each ethnic group has a different cultural background and has developed its own culture in the name of a tradition. The interaction between different cultures is ever increasing through the process of acculturation or culture contact The purpose of this study is to provide baseline information about domestic living of Korean immigrants in Australia and Australians for a larger cross-cultural study project. As the first step, the usage of domestic space and seating styles of 52 Korean households in Melbourne were analyzed. Ethnographic research was conducted, utilizing a questionnaire. The findings of this research are as follows: 1. The most popular type of Living-Dining-Kitchen arrangement was the one which the kitchen is separated from the living and dining area. The level of satisfaction was the highest when the living room, dining room, and kitchen were all separated. 2. A laundry room was indispensable for Koreans in Australia, and they wanted to dry laundry and do ironing in there. Most people were satisfied with the toilet separated from the bathroom A drain hole on the floor of the bathroom was not indispensable for most Korean-Australians. 3. Korean-Australians tend to engage in various activities in their individual rooms, and they estimated that the size of most rooms were small. They also wanted to renovate the house to expand the rooms. 4. The seating style of Korean-Australians was mostly chair-seating. Yet, they often made beds on the floor for guests, and made kimchi sitting on the floor. Also, when they were relaxing, they were using both chair-seating and floor-seating. 5. Korean-Australians were not very satisfied with the use of floor carpets because of the dust collected on the carpets, and the difficulty to clean. It may be related to their preferred floor seating style, as well. 6. Almost all Korean-Australians take off their shoes inside of the house for hygienic reasons. They had a shoes cabinet at the entrance inside of the house. 7. The most popular heating system was ducted heating. The level of satisfaction about this was moderate because hot air contains lots of dust and it makes rooms very dry. Many were using electric blankets and their desired heating system was Ondol (heated floor). 8. Korean-Australians thought that the living room was the most important place for the family, and believed it should be decorated well to entertain guests. They also pointed out that the lighting was not bright enough in general.
