In general, the accelerogram of earthquake ground motion or the accelerogram obtained from dynamic tests contain various errors. In these errors of the accelerograms, there are instrumental errors(magnitude and phase distortion) due to the response characteristics of accelerometer and the digitizing error concentrated in low and high frequency components and random errors. Then, these errors may be detrimental to the results of data processing and dynamic analysis. An efficient method which can correct the errors of the accelerogram is proposed in this study. The correction of errors can be accomplished through four steps as followes ; 1) using an interpolation method a data form appropriate to the error correction is prepared, 2) low and high frequency errors of the accelerogram are removed by band-pass filter between prescribed frequency limits, 3) instrumental errors are corrected using dynamic equilibrium equation of the accelerometer, 4) velocity and displacement are obtained by integrating corrected accelerogram. Presently, infinite impulse response(IIR) filter and finite impulse response (FIR) filter are generally used as band-pass filter. In the proposed error correction procedure, the deficiencies of FIR filter and IIR filter are reduced and, using the properties of the differentiation and the integration of Fourier transform, the accuracy of instrument correction and integration is improved.
The aim of this study is to investigate the reliability of strong motion records processed by causal and acausal Butterworth filters in comparison to the results obtained from a synthetic accelerogram. For this purpose, the fault parallel component of the Bolu record of the Duzce earthquake is modeled with a sum of exponentially damped sinusoidal components. Noise-free velocities and displacements are then obtained by analytically integrating the synthetic acceleration model. The analytical velocity and displacement signals are used as a standard with which to judge the validity of the signals obtained by filtering with causal and acausal filters and numerically integrating the acceleration model. The results show that the acausal filters are clearly preferable to the causal filters due to the fact that the response spectra obtained from the acausal filters match the spectra obtained from the simulated accelerogram better than that obtained by causal filters. The response spectra are independent from the order of the filters and from the method of integration (whether analytical integration after a spline fit to the synthetic accelerogram or the trapezoidal rule). The response spectra are sensitive to the chosen corner frequency of both the causal and the acausal filters and also to the inclusion of the pads. Accurate prediction of the static residual displacement (SRD) is very important for structures traversing faults in the near-fault regions. The greatest adverse effect of the high pass filters is their removal of the SRD. However, the noise-free displacements obtained by double integrating the synthetic accelerogram analytically preserve the SRD. It is thus apparent that conventional high pass filters should not be used for processing near-fault strong-motion records although they can be reliably used for far-fault records if applied acausally. The ground motion parameters such as ARIAS intensity, HUSID plots, Housner spectral intensity and the duration of strong-motion are found to be insensitive to the causality of filters.
This paper suggests the use of wavelet multiresolution analysis (WMRA) and neural network for generation of artificial earthquake accelerograms from target spectrum. This procedure uses the learning capabilities of radial basis function (RBF) neural network to expand the knowledge of the inverse mapping from response spectrum to earthquake accelerogram. In the first step, WMRA is used to decompose earthquake accelerograms to several levels that each level covers a special range of frequencies, and then for every level a RBF neural network is trained to learn to relate the response spectrum to wavelet coefficients. Finally the generated accelerogram using inverse discrete wavelet transform is obtained. An example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of a 1/5-scale 3-story nonductile reinforced concrete frame subjected to earthquake excitation. For this purpose, Taft N21E earthquake accelerogram was simulated by using 3m${\times}$5m shaking table. When the input acceleration is compared to that of output, it can be found that simulation of shaking table is excellent. From the results of test with Taft N21E earthquake accelerogram adjusted to peak ground acceleration(PGA) 0.06g and 0.12g(maximum acceleration in korea seismic code) the model responded in elastic behavior and it is found that the existing building in our country are safe against the levels of PGA 0.06g and 0.12g.

The paper describes the second half of the research for the development of Neural-Networks-based model for the generation of an Artificial earthquake and a Response Spectrum(NNARS). Based on the redefined traditional processes related to the generation of an earthquake acceleration response spectrum and design spectrum, four neural-networks-based models are proposed to substitute the traditional processes. RS_NN tries to directly generate acceleration response spectrum with basic data that are magnitude, epicentral distance, site conditions and focal depth. The test results of RS_NN are not good because of the characteristics of white noise, which is randomly generated. ARS_NN solve this problem by the introduction of the average concept. IARS_NN has a role to inverse the ARS_NN, so that is applied to generate a ground motion accelerogram compatible with the shape of a response spectrum. Additionally, DS_NN directly produces design spectrum with basic data. As these four neural networks are simulated as a step by step, the paper describes the methods to generate a response spectrum and a design spectrum using the neural networks.
Nowadays it is very necessary to generate artificial accelerograms because of lack of adequate earthquake records and vast usage of time-history dynamic analysis to calculate responses of structures. According to the lack of natural records, the best choice is to use proper artificial earthquake records for the specified design zone. These records should be generated in a way that would contain seismic properties of a vast area and therefore could be applied as design records. The main objective of this paper is to present a new method based on wavelet theory to generate more artificial earthquake records, which are compatible with target spectrum. Wavelets are able to decompose time series to several levels that each level covers a specific range of frequencies. If an accelerogram is transformed by Fourier transform to frequency domain, then wavelets are considered as a transform in time-scale domain which frequency has been changed to scale in the recent domain. Since wavelet theory separates each signal, it is able to generate so many artificial records having the same target spectrum.
The paper concerns the selection of a design accelerograms used for the slope stability assessment under earthquake excitation. The aim is to experimentally verify the Arias Intensity as an indicator of the excitation threat to the slope stability. A simple dynamic system consisting of a rigid block on a rigid inclined plane subjected to horizontal excitation is adopted as a slope model. Strong ground motions recorded during earthquakes are reproduced on a shaking table. The permanent displacement of the block serves as a slope stability indicator. Original research stand allows us to analyse not only the relative displacement but also the acceleration time history of the block. The experiments demonstrate that the Arias Intensity of the accelerogram is a good indicator of excitation threat to the stability of the slope. The numerical analyses conducted using the experimentally verified extended Newmark's method indicate that both the Arias Intensity and the peak velocity of the excitation are good indicators of the impact of dynamic excitation on the dam's stability. The selection can be refined using complementary information, which is the dominant frequency and duration of the strong motion phase of the excitation, respectively.
This paper presents a case study with a multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) system where the Floor Response Spectra (FRS) have been derived from a large ensemble of ground motion accelerograms. The FRS are evaluated by the frequency response function which is calculated numerically. The advantage of this scheme over a repetitive time-history analysis of the entire structure for each accelerogram of the set has been highlighted. The present procedure permits generation of FRS with a specified probability of exceedence.

The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of 1/12 scale upper-wall lower-frame reinforced concrete structure subjected to earthquake excitations. For this purpose, Taft N21E earthquake accelerogram was simulated by using 4m$\times$4m shaking table. When the input acceleration is compared to that of output, it was found that simulation of shaking table is satisfactory. From the test results with peak ground acceleration(PGA) 0.22g, which corresponds to 0.11g in prototype by the similitude law, it can be observed that the model responded in elastic behavior and that large interstory drift occurred at the lower part of the structure.
This paper presents the technique using wavelet analysis to solve the seismic response of a steam turbine-generator rotor system subjected to earthquake excitations. A brief review of the wavelet transform and its discretization, time-frequency representation of the earthquake wave and the seismic response for a rotor system is presented. The Daubechies wavelet has been used for describing the time-frequency characteristics of the input and the response in case of a recorded accelerogram during 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake. Also, the results in the wavelet domain has been illustrated through comparison with the time domain simulation results.
