  • Effect of dealloying condition on the formation of nanoporous structure in melt-spun $Al_{60}Ge_{30}Mn_{10}$ alloy has been investigated in the present study. In as-melt-spun $Al_{60}Ge_{30}Mn_{10}$ alloy spinodal decomposition occurs in the undercooled liquid during cooling, leading to amorphous phase separation. By immersing the as-melt-spun $Al_{60}Ge_{30}Mn_{10}$ alloy in 5 wt% HCl solution, Al-rich amorphous region is leached out, resulting in an interconnected nano-porous $GeO_x$ with an amorphous structure. The dealloying temperature strongly affects the whole dealloying process. At higher dealloying temperature, dissolution kinetics and surface diffusion/agglomeration rate become higher, resulting in the accelerated dealloying kinetics, i.e., larger dealloying depth and coarser pore-ligament structure.

  • The increase use of natural gas as an energy source has been continuous demand for ever-increasing strength in gas transmission pipeline materials in order to achieve safe and economic transportation of natural gas. In particular, linepipe material for sour gas service primarily needs to have crack resistant property. However, applications of sour linepipes are expanding toward deep water or cold region, which require higher toughness and/or heavier wall thickness as well as higher strength. To improve the crack resistance of linepipe steel in sour environment, low alloy steel are produced by controlled rolling subsequently followed by the accelerated cooling process. This paper summarizes the design concepts for controlling crack resistant property low alloy linepipe steels for sour gas service.

  • TMCP steel manufactured by controlled rolling followed by accelerated cooling process is known to have extra-ordinary mechanical properties such as tensile strength and toughness. However, there is much uncertainty about the fatigue fracture characteristics of this steel. In this paper, the fatigue fracture behaviour of the TMCP steel in base metal and weldment were inspected through the Dynamic Implant test method. Those results were quantitavely compared with those of the ordinary normalized steel of same strength level. Moreover, the effect of the diffusible hydrogen included in the welded part on the fatigue fracture behaviour were made clear. As the experimental results, the fatigue fracture characteristics of the TMCP steel in case of base metal proved out to be superior to that of the normalized steel. However, the TMCP steel weldment including the diffusible hydrogen appeared to have inferior fatigue characteristics compared with the same conditioned normalized steel weldment.

  • This study investigated the surface pit corrosion of SS420J2 stainless steel accompanied by intergranular crack. To reveal the causes of surface pits and cracks, OM, SEM, and TEM analyses of the microstructures of the utilized SS420J2 were performed, as was simulated heat treatment. The intergranular cracks were found to have been induced by a grain boundary carbide of $(Cr,Fe)_{23}C_6$, which was identified by SEM/EDS and TEM diffraction analyses. The mechanism of grain boundary sensitization occurred at the position of the carbide, followed by its occurrence at the Cr depleted zone. The grain boundary carbide of $(Cr,Fe)_{23}C_6$ type precipitated during air cooling condition after a $1038^{\circ}C$ solid solution treatment. The carbide precipitate formation also accelerated at the band structure formed by cold working. Therefore, using manufacturing processes of cooling and cold working, it is difficult to protect SS420J2 stainless steel against surface pit corrosion. Several counter plans to fight pit corrosion by sensitization were suggested, involving alloying and manufacturing processes.

  • Various precooling treatments were applied to prolong the freshness of mibaek peaches that were harvested during the summer season. Peaches were cooled from $25.9^{\circ}C$ to $5^{\circ}C$ within 3 hours by a pressure cooler, and the cooling rate was accelerated by increasing the air velocity and static pressure. Respiration and ethylene production rates of mibaek peaches were about four times faster at $20^{\circ}C$ than at $7^{\circ}C$, while precooled peaches had better visual quality at $7^{\circ}C$ than at $20^{\circ}C$. Also, precooled peaches had higher soluble solid and ascorbic acid content than non-precooled peaches when stored at 7 and $20^{\circ}C$. However, weight loss was lower in precooled peaches than in non-precooled peaches during storage.

  • Steel corrosion in concrete is a main cause of deterioration and early failure of concrete structures. A novel integration of electromagnetic heat induction and infrared (IR) thermography is proposed for nondestructive detection of steel corrosion in concrete, by taking advantage of the difference in thermal characteristics of corroded and non-corroded steel. This paper focuses on experimental investigation of the concept. An inductive heater is developed to remotely heat the embedded steel from concrete surface, which is integrated with an IR camera. Concrete samples with different cover depths are prepared. Each sample is embedded with a single rebar in the middle, resulting an identical cover depth from the front and the back surfaces, which enable heat induction from one surface and IR imaging from the other simultaneously. The impressed current (IC) method is adopted to induce accelerated corrosion on the rebar. IR video images are recorded during the entire heating and cooling periods. The test results demonstrate a clear difference in thermal characteristics between corroded and non-corroded samples. The corroded sample shows higher rates of heating and cooling than those of the non-corroded sample. This study demonstrates a potential for nondestructive detection of rebar corrosion in concrete.

  • The grafting reaction for maleic anhydride (MA) onto high density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated from solution process with initiators. The chemical modification of neat HDPE was carried out with various contents of MA (3-21 wt.%) and initiator (0.2-1 wt.%) at different temperature ($80-130^{\circ}C$). The grafting degree was obtained from the titration and the highest grafting degree was 3.1%. The grafting degree increased as the content of MA and initiator increased, however, the highest grafting degree was demonstrated for a particular content of MA and initiator. In the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics, the Ozawa model was unsuitable method to investigate the crystallization behavior of MA onto HDPE, whereas the Avrami and Liu models found effective. The crystallization rate was accelerated as the cooling rate increased, but postponed by combination of MA onto neat HDPE backbone.

  • Hydrogen permeation measurements have been carried out on API X65 grade linepipe steel. In order to study the effect of steel microstructure on hydrogen diffusion behavior in linepipe steel, the accelerated cooling condition was applied and then three different kinds of microstructures were obtained. Hydrogen permeation measurement has been performed in reference to modified ISO17081 (2004) and ZIS Z3113 method. Hydrogen trapping parameters in these steels were evaluated in terms of the effective diffusivity ($D_{eff}$), permeability ($J_{ss}L$) and the amount of diffusible hydrogen. In this study, microstructures which affect both hydrogen trapping and diffusion were degenerated pearlite (DP), acicular ferrite (AF), bainite and martensite/austenite constituents (MA). The low $D_{eff}$ and $J_{ss}L$ mean that more hydrogen can be trapped reversibly or irreversibly and the corresponding steel microstructure is dominant hydrogen trapping site. The large amount of diffusible hydrogen means that corresponding steel microstructure is predominantly reversible. The results of this study suggest that the hydrogen trapping efficiency increases in the order of DP, bainite and AF, while AF is the most efficient reversible trap.
