  • In this paper, a system of falling weight impact tester was built up to evaluate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates in consideration of stress wave propagation theory. Delamination area of impacted specimens for the different ply orientation was measured with ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen having four interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the more absorbed energy. Hybrid specimen containing GFRP layer was higher than that of normal specimens.

  • In this paper, a pitch-type wave energy converter (WEC-rotor) is investigated in irregular wave conditions for the real sea testing at the west coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. The present research builds on and extends our previous work on regular waves to irregular waves. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the WEC-rotor are assessed by establishing a quasi-two-dimensional numerical wave tank using computational fluid dynamics by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. The numerical solution is validated with physical experiments, and the comparison shows good agreement. Furthermore, the hydrodynamic performance of the WEC-rotor is explored by investigating the effect of the power take-off (PTO) loading torque by one-way and two-way systems, the wave height, the wave period, operational and high sea wave conditions. Irrespective of the sea wave conditions, the absorbed power is quadratic in nature with the one-way and two-way PTO loading systems. The power absorption increases with the wave height, and the increment is rapid and mild in the two-way and one-way PTO loading torques, respectively. The pitch response amplitude operator increases as the wave period increases until the maximum value and then decreases. For a fixed PTO loading, the power and efficiency are higher in the two-way PTO loading system than in the one-way PTO loading system at different wave periods.

  • Beta ray $(^{90}Sr+^{90}Y)$ absorbed dose at tissue surface was measured from the distance of 30cm by use of extrapolation chamber. In the measurement, following factors were considered: effective area of collecting electrode, polarity effect, ion recombination and window attenuation. The measured absorbed dose rate at tissue surface was $1.493{\mu}Gy/sec$ with ${\pm}2.9%$.

  • In order to study on the fracture behavior and the fracture thoughness of combined structure, the specimens, structural steel (SM28C) and 6:4 brass are annealed for ductility and investigated for the befavior of fracture and the absorbed energy at the variation of the impact velocity. The results obtained by this study are as follows: (1)The maximum load increases with the impact velocity, but in the condition of constant impact velocity it decreases as the ductility increases. (2)The absorbed energy increases with the impact velocity, but in the condition of constant impact velocity it is constant as the ductility increases. (3)In the case of the combined structure of peralite and ferrite, the microcracks initiates and propagates mainly in the ferrite structure intergranular in accompany with the slip, and the slip concentration phenomena occur in the boundary of pearlite structure However, in case of the combined structure of .alpha. and ..betha. phase, the microcracks initiates and propagares mainly in the .alpha. phase intergranularly, and slip concentration phenomena not ocur in the boundary of .betha. phase.

  • Use of dual phase steel are growing for its high strength and light weight in automobiles. The effect of the martensite volume fraction with various impact velocities on the strength, ductility and absorbed energy of dual phase (ferrite-martensite) steels were investigated in low carbon 1.5% Mn steels which were soaked at 700.deg. C, 730.deg. C, 780.deg. C, and brine quenched. Both the yield load and the maximum impact load increased when the martensite volume fraction increased, the loading time and the absorbed energy of the specimen decreased when the martensite volume fraction increased.

  • In this study, a drop-weight impact tester was manufactured to assess the strength of CFRP laminate plates. The tests were conducted on several laminates of different ply orientation. A system for the impact strength of CFRP laminates was made considering stress wave propagation theory using drop-weight impact tester as one of impact test. Results indicate that absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen, haying four interfaces is higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. Absorbed energy in the specimen that ply number, interface number and fiber stacking sequences is same but having hybrid is higher than that of orthotropic laminates without hybrid.

  • The effects of hydrogen charging on the mechanical properties of 304 stainless steels were investigated in conjunction with the detailed examinations of their fracture modes. The dependence of the absorbed impact energy and the surface hardness of the 304 stainless steels on the hydrogen charging time was characterized. The tensile properties of the 304 stainless steels by the variation of cross-head speed were also evaluated at the room temperature. The hydrogen charging was performed by an electrolysis method for all specimens of the 304 stainless steels. The mechanical properties of the 304 stainless steels exhibited the sensitivity of embrittlement due to a hydrogen charging. The correlation between mechanical properties and fracture surfaces was discussed.

  • More diversified and strengthened safety regulations require higher safety vehicle with less weight. The structural foam can play a role for restraining section distortion of main body members undergoing bending collapse at vehicle crash. In this study, using structural foam modeling technology, validated in previous work, the bending collapse characteristics were evaluated for two types of circular and actual vehicle body frame sections. With changing the foam filling method, outer panel thickness and section shape, load carrying capability and absorbed energy were observed. The results indicate valuable design strategy for effectively elevating bending collapse performance of body members with foam filled.

  • The object of this study is to get the superior double hull structure to its crashworthiness against collision comparing absorbed energy capacities of its various types with each other, varying material properties, collision positions and velocities, and structural arrangements such as double hull width, web and stringer spaces, etc. Local absorbed energy capacities, failure behaviors and damage extents of their members are also considered during collision in addition to the estimations of their global ones. This paper describes a series of numerical simulations of collisions between DWT 45,000 oil tanker(struck ship) and DWT 10,500 rigid one(striking ships) using Hydrocode LS/DYNA3D. Collisions are assumed to occur at the middle of struck ship with striking one moving at right angle to its centerline. The following remarks were obtained through this study: More flexible the double hull structure is, much superior its crashworthiness against collision is. The increment of double hull width does not give much influence than other factors do. The exact use of material property such as failure strain is also important on the numerical simulation of collision.
