  • The hydroacoustic surveys to provide the essential information for the assessment, management and utilization of fishery resources in the southern waters of Korea were carried out during five research cruises between October 1996 and October 1997 by the training ship KAYA of Pukyong National University. These hydroacoustic investigations were designed to obtain more precise estimates of the geographic distribution, absolute abundance and biological characteristics of the fishery resources, and the vertically integrated densities of fish in terms of volume backscattering strength(SV) by survey region and depth bins, such as the entire water column and the 0~ 10 m from bottom fraction, were measured separately. Hydroacoustic data were collected by using a Simrad EK 500 Scientific echo sounder operating at two frequencies of 38kHz and 120kHz and the data stored in field were later processed on a HP PC using a Simrad EP 500 echo integration and target strength analysis system. The biological compositions of echo signal were identified and sampled using a demersal trawl during daylight hours. The mean target strength to scale the echo integration data for hydroacoustic surveys was derived from the relationship between the SV and the weight of trawl catch per unit volume of the water column sampled by demersal trawls. The results obtained can be summarized as follow : 1. The mean volume backscattering strength for the entire water column in the southern waters of Korea between 1996 and 1997 were -67.2 dB and -70.9 dB at two frequencies of 38 kHz and 120 kHz , respectively, and for the bottom layer of the 0-10 m from bottom friction were -68.8 dB, -70.2 dB, respectively. That is, the volume backscattering strength for the entire water column at low frequency was higher than that at high frequency. 2. The relationship between the mean backscattering strength (〈SV〉, dB) for the depth strata of trawl hauls and the weight (C, kg/m3) per cubic meter of the catch sampled by bottom trawling in the southern waters of Korea in January and July 1997 were expressed by the following equations: 38 kHz : 〈SV〉= -28.2 + 10 log(C), 120 kHz : 〈SV〉= -32.4 + 10 log(C). The mean weight -normalized target strengths derived from these equitions were -28.2 dB/ kg, -32.4 dB/ kg at 38 kHz and 120 kHz , respectively. That is, the mean weight -normalized target strength at 38 kHz was 4.2 dB higher than that at 120 kHz. 3. The distribution density of fish in terms of biomass per unit volume in the southern waters of Korea were estimated to be 125.9 $\times$ 10-6 kg/m3 and 141.3 $\times$ 10-6 kg/m3 at 38 kHz and 120 kHz , respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose an indoor positioning technique using the landmark based on relative Access Point (AP) signal strengths. The absolute values of AP signals are used to conventional indoor positioning technologies, but they may be different because of the difference of the measuring device, the measuring environment, and the timing of the measurements. However, we found the fact that the flow of the AP's RSSI in certain places shows almost constant patterns. Based on theses characteristics, we identify the relative strength between the APs and store the certain places as landmarks where they show certain patterns. Once the deployment of the landmark map is complete, system calculate position of user using the IMU sensor of smartphone and calibrate it with stored landmarks. Our system shows 75.2% improvement over technology that used only sensors, and 39.6% improvement over technology that used landmarks that were selected with absolute values.

  • The angular momentum transport of an idealized axisymmetric vortex in the developing stage was investigated using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. The balanced axisymmetric vortex was constructed based on an empirical function for tangential wind, and the temperature, geopotential, and surface pressure were obtained from the balanced equation. The numerical simulation was carried out for 6 days on the f-plane with the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) set as constant. The weak vortex at initial time was intensified with time, and reached the strength of tropical cyclone in a couple of days. The Absolute Angular Momentum (AAM) was transported along with the secondary circulation of the vortex. Total AAM integrated over a cylinder of radius of 2000 km decreased with simulation time, but total kinetic energy increased rapidly. From the budget analysis, it was found that the surface friction is mainly responsible for the decrease of total AAM. Also, contribution of the surface friction to the AAM loss was about 90% while that of horizontal advection was as small as 8%. The trajectory of neutral numerical tracers following the secondary circulation was presented for the Lagrangian viewpoint of the transports of absolute angular momentum. From the analysis using the trajectory of tracers it was found that the air parcel was under the influence of the surface friction continuously until it leaves the boundary layer near the core. Then the air parcel with reduced amount of angular momentum compared to its original amount was transported from boundary layer to upper level of the vortex and contributed to form the anti-cyclone. These results suggest that the tropical cyclone loses angular momentum as it develops, which is due to the dissipation of angular momentum by the surface friction.

  • This study is related to the surface subsidence due to the collapse of a underground void during earthquakes. The amount of the settlement due to the collapse of a underground void will depend on the depth of the void, the initial condition of unit weight of sand, the size and type of foundation, the strength of earthquake, the size of a void, etc. The purpose of the paper is to estimate the amount of the subsidence, analyse the factors affecting the subsidence, and develop a program determining the probability of the damages to structures in terms of absolute and differential settlement and rotational settlement. On the base of the results obtained in this study, when the depth of a void is constant and the width of the void increases, the change of the subsidence factor due to the angle of internal friction and the actual effective factor of the void become smaller than that due to the unit weight of sand deposits. In the same condition, the probabilities of damages due to the absolute and differential settlement increase, and those due to the rotational settlement decrease.

  • In this paper, the bonding strengths of co-cured T800 carbon/epoxy composite-aluminum single lap joints with and without additional pressures were investigated using the pressure information induced by the fiber tension during a filament winding process. The specimens of all the tests were fabricated by an autoclave vacuum bag de-gassing molding being controlled forming pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa including vacuum). A special device which can act uniform additional pressures on the joining part of the single lap joint specimen was designed to measure the bonding strengths of composite-aluminum liners of type III hydrogen pressure vessel fabricated by a filament winding process. After the three different additional pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa) were applied to the specimens the effect of the additional pressures on the bonding strengths of the co-cured single-lap joints were evaluated.

  • Recently, the electric vehicle market is gradually growing due to strengthened environmental regulations and high oil prices. also, in internal combustion engine vehicles, the sensitivity of Buzz, Squeak, Rattle (BSR) noise is increasing as engine Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH)-related noise is reduced and technology for shielding noise coming from outside is developed. In this study, the stick-slip noise that occurs in Panoramic Curved Display (PCD) of automobile was analyzed for the correlation between the surface energy of polymer plastic and the polar component. For polar polymer materials, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and PolyCarbonate-Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (PC-ABS), compound materials were fabricated and evaluated. As a result, when the polar component of the polymer plastic was 3.86 mN/m or higher, stick-slip motion occurred, and as the absolute transition slope increased in the friction behavior over time, the possibility of stick-slip noise increased and the value of the friction coefficient The greater the difference, the greater the strength of the stick-slip noise.

  • The determination of the mixture parameters of stabilization has become a great concern in geotechnical applications. This paper presents an effort about the application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques including radial basis neural network (RBNN), multi-layer perceptrons (MLP), generalized regression neural network (GRNN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in order to predict the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of silty soil stabilized with bottom ash (BA), jute fiber (JF) and steel fiber (SF) under different freeze-thaw cycles (FTC). The dosages of the stabilizers and number of freeze-thaw cycles were employed as input (predictor) variables and the UCS values as output variable. For understanding the dominant parameter of the predictor variables on the UCS of stabilized soil, a sensitivity analysis has also been performed. The performance measures of root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and determination coefficient ($R^2$) were used for the evaluations of the prediction accuracy and applicability of the employed models. The results indicate that the predictions due to all AI techniques employed are significantly correlated with the measured UCS ($p{\leq}0.05$). They also perform better predictions than nonlinear regression (NLR) in terms of the performance measures. It is found from the model performances that RBNN approach within AI techniques yields the highest satisfactory results (RMSE = 55.4 kPa, MAE = 45.1 kPa, and $R^2=0.988$). The sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the JF inclusion within the input predictors is the most effective parameter on the UCS responses, followed by FTC.

  • This study was performed to estimate the high-speed direct tensile strength(DTS1), low-speed direct tensile strength(DTS2) , indirect tensile strength(ITS) resilient modulus(MR) and stiffness index(SI) of sand asphalt mixture based on the absolute viscosity, kinematic viscosity, penetration, softening point and PG grade of binder. DTS2 showed higher correlation with the physical properties than other properties of mixture, and the next was DTS1, ITS, SI and MR in order. Among binder properties, PG grade showed the highest relation with DTS2. Therefore. it was found that the high DTS mixture could be made when the binder with a high PG grade was used. However, since the individual physical property showed a relatively low correlation, various properties were used together in regression analysis. The estimation models of DTS and ITS were over 0.99, respectively. R2 of MR and SI estimation models were over 0.91 and 0.93, respectively. It was concluded that mechanical properties could be estimated with a high coefficient of determination from those physical properties.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data which can be applied to the use of foamed mortars using foaming agent of prefoamed type. The data was based on the properties of foamed mortars depending upon various mixing ratios of cement to fine aggregates, flow values and foam-cement ratio to compare those of cement mortar. The results obtained were summarized as follow; 1. At the mixing ratio of 1:0 and the foam-cement ratio of 6.00%, the increasing rate of water-cement ratio was 25% by flow $200{\pm}5mm$, 28% by flow $240{\pm}5mm$ and 32% by flow $280{\pm}5mm$. But it decreased as the mixing ratio gets poorer. The result showed that water amount increased because of the high viscosity caused by the increase of foam-cement ratio. The decrease of water-cement ratio was the greatest when the foam-cement ratio was 1.50%. 2. Absolute aridity bulk density of foamed mortars decreased with the increase of foam-cement ratio and the decrease of flow values. 3. Generally, compressive, tensile and bending strenghs of foamed mortars decreased with the decrease of flow values and the increase of foam-cement ratio. 4. The compressive strength was in proportion to tensile strength. It was estimated that the compressive strength was 8.8 times of tensile strength. The compressive strength was in proportion to bending strength. It was estimated that the compressive strength was 4.0 times of bending strength. The bending strength was in proportion to tensile strength. It was estimated that the bending strength was 2.1 times of tensile strength. 5. At the mixing ratio of 1:1 the lowest absorption rates were showed by foamed mortars, respectively. It was significantly higher at the early stage of immersed water.

  • In this study, in order to propose an efficient model to predict the torque capacity of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams, the existing experimental data related to torsional response of beams is reviewed. It is observed that existing data neglects the effects of some parameters on the variation of torque capacity. Thus, an experimental research was also conducted to obtain the effects of neglected parameters. In the experimental study, a total of seventeen SFRC beams are tested against torsion. The parameters considered in the experiments are concrete compressive strength, steel fiber aspect ratio, volumetric ratio of steel fibers and longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The effect of each parameter is discussed in terms of torque versus unit angle of twist graphs. The data obtained from this experimental research is also combined with the data got from previous studies and employed in artificial neural network (ANN) analysis to estimate the ultimate torque capacity of SFRC beams. In addition to parameters considered in the experiments, aspect ratio of beam cross-section, yield strengths of both transverse and longitudinal reinforcements, and transverse reinforcement ratio are also defined as parameters in ANN analysis due to their significant effects observed in previous studies. Assessment of the accuracy of ANN analysis in estimating the ultimate torque capacity of SFRC beams is performed by comparing the analytical and experimental results. Comparisons are conducted in terms of root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and coefficient of efficiency ($E_f$). The results of this study revealed that addition of steel fibers increases the ultimate torque capacity of reinforced concrete beams. It is also found that ANN is a powerful method and a feasible tool to estimate ultimate torque capacity of both normal and high strength concrete beams within the range of input parameters considered.
