  • CCD photometric observations of the globular cluster (GC), M53 (NGC 5024), are performed using the 1.8 m telescope at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea on the same nights (2002 April and 2003 May) as the observations of the GC M92 (NGC 6341) reported by Cho and Lee using the same instrumental setup. The data for M53 is reduced using the same method as used for M92 by Cho and Lee, including preprocessing, point-spread function fitting photometry, and standardization etc. Therefore, M53 and M92 are on the same photometric system defined by Landolt, and the photometry of M53 and M92 is tied together as closely as possible. After complete photometric reduction, the V versus B − V , V versus V − I, and V versus B − I color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of M53 are produced to derive the relative ages of M53 and M92 and derive the various characteristics of its CMDs in future analysis. From the present analysis, the relative ages of M53 and M92 are derived using the Δ(B − V ) method reported by VandenBerg et al. The relative age of M53 is found to be 1.6 ± 0.85 Gyr younger than that of M92 if the absolute age of M92 is taken to be 14 Gyr. This relative age difference between M53 and M92 causes slight differences in the horizontal-branch morphology of these two GCs.

  • The sustainable development principle of replacing natural resources with renewable material is an important research topic. In this study, waste LCD (liquid crystal display) glass powder was used to replace cement (0%, 10%, 20% and 30%) through a volumetric method using three water-binder ratios (0.47, 0.59, and 0.71) to make cement mortar. The compressive strength was tested at the ages of 7, 28, 56 and 91 days. The test results show that the compressive strength increases with age but decreases as the water-binder ratio increases. The compressive strength slightly decreases with an increase in the replacement of LCD glass powder at a curing age of 7 days. However, at a curing age of 91 days, the compressive strength is slightly greater than that for the control group (glass powder is 0%). When the water-binder ratios are 0.47, 0.59 and 0.71, the compressive strength of the various replacements increases by 1.38-1.61 times, 1.56-1.80 times and 1.45-2.20 times, respectively, during the aging process from day 7 to day 91. Furthermore, a prediction model of the compressive strength of a cement mortar with waste LCD glass powder was deduced in this study. According to the comparison between the prediction analysis values and test results, the MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) values of the compressive strength are between 2.79% and 5.29%, and less than 10%. Thus, the analytical model established in this study has a good forecasting accuracy. Therefore, the proposed model can be used as a reliable tool for assessing the design strength of cement mortar from early age test results.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to develop a linear regression model using the pulp-to-tooth volume ratio (PTVR) ratio of the maxillary canine, assessed through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, to predict chronological age (CA) in Indonesian adults. Materials and Methods: A sample of 99 maxillary canines was collected from patients between 20 and 49.99 years old. These samples were obtained from CBCT scans taken at the Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital in Indonesia between 2018 and 2022. Pulp volume (PV) and tooth volume (TV) were measured using ITK-SNAP, while PTVR was calculated from the PV/TV ratio. Using RStudio, a linear regression was performed to predict CA using PTVR. Additionally, correlation and observer agreement were assessed. Results: The PTVR method demonstrated excellent reproducibility, and a significant correlation was found between the PTVR of the maxillary canine and CA(r= -0.74, P<0.01). The linear regression analysis showed an R2 of 0.58, a root mean square error of 5.85, and a mean absolute error of 4.31. Conclusion: Linear regression using the PTVR can be effectively applied to predict CA in Indonesian adults between 20 and 49.99 years of age. As models of this type can be population-specific, recalibration for each population is encouraged. Additionally, future research should explore the use of other teeth, such as molars.

  • The author studied the quality and change of the effective demand for dental treatment of the cutpatients of the Wonkwang dental clinic from the March of 1982 to the August of 1983. The results were compared with the previous reports to find any changes that might come from the effect of dental insurance system. After discussing the results, the author concluded as follows: 1. The twenties were the most in the age groups, but it is desirable that age groups of mixed dentition be the most to enhance the dental health status of community. 2. The effective demand for dental treatment increased especially in the areas such as intraoral radiograph taking, amalgam filling, temporary filling, endodontic treatments, and drug application on the soft tissue, but decreased in the areas such as prosthodontic treatments, and there were no demand for the orthodontic treatment. 3. As compared with the absolute needs, the effective demand was relatively high for teeth extraction and amalgam filling, but it was generally very low. 4. So, the present extent of dental insurance system should be expanded, and the dental care delivery system should be established within the community. Finally, the economic and social status of Iri community should be enhance by political and educational plannings.

  • To help arrive at a more accurate diagnosis of anteroposterior apial base relationship on each individual case, it is important to compare the interpretation in the same population on a longitudinal basis. The author studied on the changes of the anteroposterior apical base relationship using serial lateral cephalometric roentgenograms of 15 boys and 27 girls aged from 6 to 13 years of Korean children. Following results were obtained 1. Norms of Korean boys and girls were established. 2. With ages, there was a gradual decrease of ANB, AXB angle, and there was a gradual increase of facial angle, A-B plane angle, APDI. 3. Wits appraisal does not change significantly with ages. 4. No significant differences were observed in the changes between male and female subjects for all absolute values between the ages of 6 years and 12 years, but significant differences were observed in ANB, AXB, A-B plane angle of the age of 13 years. No significant differences were observed in the changes between male and female subjects for all incremental values between the ages of 6 years and 13 years.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and the asymmetry of the mandibular height. Methods: We compared 100 randomly selected TMD patients diagnosed by the research diagnostic criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) Axis I with 100 non-TMD control subjects matched with the TMD patients in age and gender. The mandibular heights were measured on an orthopantomogram and the asymmetry index (AI) was calculated as previously described. Results: The absolute AI value of 4.37% turned out to be the least cut-off value defining asymmetry, which showed a significant difference in asymmetry incidence (p<0.01) between the TMD and control groups. The risk of TMD increased in the asymmetry group by 4.57 (odds ratio). The incidence of asymmetry was not related to age and gender in both of the TMD and control groups. When dividing the TMD group according to the RDC/TMD Axis I diagnosis, neither the incidence of muscle disorder nor disk displacement was related to the incidence of asymmetry. However, a higher incidence of asymmetry was observed in the subjects classified into the arthrosis/arthritis groups (p<0.01). Conclusions: Although it does not imply a direct cause-and-effect relationship, asymmetry resulting in more than 4.37% difference between mandibular heights may increase the risk of TMD and correlates positively to the incidence of arthritic change in the temporomandibular joint of TMD patients.

  • We present the properties of globular cluster systems for 10 early-type galaxies in low density environments obtained using deep images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Using the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey as a counterpart in high-density environments, we investigate the role of environment in determining the properties of their globular cluster systems. We detect a strong colour bimodality of globular cluster systems in half of our galaxy sample. It is found that there is a strong correlation between the colour and richness of globular cluster populations and their host galaxy luminosities: the less bright galaxies possess bluer and fewer globular clusters as also seen in rich cluster environments. However, the mean colour of globular clusters in our field sample are slightly bluer than those in cluster environments at a given galaxy luminosity, and the colour of the red population has a steeper slope with absolute luminosity. By employing the YEPS simple stellar population model, the colour offset corresponds to metallicity difference of $\Delta$[F e/H ] ~ 0.15 - 1.20 or an age difference of $\Delta$age ~ 2 Gyr on average, implying that GCs in field galaxies appear to be either less metal-rich or younger than those in cluster galaxies. Although we have found that galaxy environment has a subtle effect on the formation and metal enrichment of GC systems, host galaxy mass is the primary factor that determines the stellar populations of GCs and the galaxy itself.

  • Analysis approaches for single compositional data are well established; however, effective analysis strategies for paired compositional data remain to be investigated. The current project was motivated by studies of age-related hearing loss (presbyacusis), where subjects are classified into four audiometric phenotypes that need to be ranked within these phenotypes based on their paired compositional data. We address this challenge by formulating this problem as a classification problem and integrating a penalized multinomial logistic regression model with compositional data analysis approaches. We utilize Elastic Net for a penalty function, while considering average, absolute difference, and perturbation operators for compositional data. We applied the proposed approach to the presbyacusis study of 532 subjects with probabilities that each ear of a subject belongs to each of four presbyacusis subtypes. We further investigated the ranking of presbyacusis subjects using the proposed approach based on previous literature. The data analysis results indicate that the proposed approach is effective for ranking subjects based on paired compositional data.

  • Esophageal candidiasis is commonly seen in immunocompromised patients; however, candida esophagitis induced stricture is a very rare complication. We report the first case of esophageal stricture secondary to candidiasis in a glycogen storage disease (GSD) 1b child. The patient was diagnosed with GSD type 1b by liver biopsy. No mutation was found in the G6PC gene, but SLC37A4 gene sequencing revealed a compound heterozygous mutation (p.R28H and p.W107X, which was a novel mutation). The patient's absolute neutrophil count was continuously under $1,000/{\mu}L$ when he was over 6 years of age. He was admitted frequently for recurrent fever and infection, and frequently received intravenous antibiotics, antifungal agents. He complained of persistent dysphagia beginning at age 7 years. Esophageal stricture and multiple whitish patches were observed by endoscopy and endoscopic biopsy revealed numerous fungal hyphae consistent with candida esophagitis. He received esophageal balloon dilatation four times, and his symptoms improved.

  • The absolute decreasing in the school-age population due to the low fertility rate that has lasted for more than 20 years is a result of the lack of filling in universities. The lack of filling in general universities is more serious in universities of local area than universities in the metropolitan area, and in two-year junior colleges rather than general universities. The purpose of this study is to how the highschool grading system and university rankings have an effect on the lack of filling enterance quota for new students.
