Psychophysiological Effects of Orchid and Rose Fragrances on Humans

  • This study aimed to determine the effects of floral fragrances on human brain waves and moods. A total of 44 subjects participated in this experiment. Group 1 consisted of 11 male and 14 female college students with a mean age of 24.5 years (${\pm}2.23$) and Group 2 consisted of 10 males and 9 females with a mean age of 54.3 years (${\pm}2.98$). Subjects were exposed to floral fragrances of Rosa hybrida, 'Hera' (hereafter referred to as "rose"), Cymbidium faberi (hereafter referred to as "orchid"), or odorless control flowers (hereafter referred to as "control"). Experiments took place in three rooms (rose, orchid, and control). Electroencephalographs (EEGs) were recorded during exposure to the odors and the data were processed using quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) techniques. The changing EEG patterns were analyzed by brain mapping and compressed spectral arrays, and the subjects' preferences (hedonic evaluations) were quantified with an A1 index. Increased activation of absolute alpha waves was verified on six of the eight EEG channels, with the right frontal and left occipital lobes exhibiting no changes and the left parietal region showing the greatest activation. According to the QEEG measurements in the electrode sites over the frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes, the strongest absolute alpha waves were induced in the parietal lobes, followed by the temporal lobes, with the other lobes showing no significant changes. On brain maps, the orchid fragrance induced greater absolute alpha and absolute mid-beta activities compared with the rose and control fragrances, and the rose fragrance induced high absolute mid-beta activation. To identify emotional responses to floral fragrances, the subjects were requested to fill in a questionnaire and the resulting odor-related emotional descriptors were analyzed using semantic differential and factor analysis. Principal component analysis identified "elegant" as the first principal component describing the floral fragrance, followed by "refreshing" and "aromatic." The subjects gave orchid higher scores for "elegant" and "refreshing," while finding rose more "aromatic." Differences in hedonic evaluation revealed by the A1 index appeared in the 65-115 sec range of scent exposure time. The subjects with ages of around 50 years showed olfactory preferences throughout the entire experimental time of 160 sec, most markedly in the later time segment (115-165 sec), showing an increasing preference with increasing exposure time. We conclude that rose fragrance can improve concentration by creating an aromatic environment conducive to a concentrated and calm state of mind, and orchid fragrance can make people feel pampered and relaxed by creating an elegant and refreshing environment.

Region of Interest Localization for Bone Age Estimation Using Whole-Body Bone Scintigraphy

  • In the past decade, deep learning has been applied to various medical image analysis tasks. Skeletal bone age estimation is clinically important as it can help prevent age-related illness and pave the way for new anti-aging therapies. Recent research has applied deep learning techniques to the task of bone age assessment and achieved positive results. In this paper, we propose a bone age prediction method using a deep convolutional neural network. Specifically, we first train a classification model that automatically localizes the most discriminative region of an image and crops it from the original image. The regions of interest are then used as input for a regression model to estimate the age of the patient. The experiments are conducted on a whole-body scintigraphy dataset that was collected by Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital. The experimental results illustrate the potential of our proposed method, which has a mean absolute error of 3.35 years. Our proposed framework can be used as a robust supporting tool for clinicians to prevent age-related diseases.

Prognostic Significance of Peripheral Blood Flow Cytometry Parameters in Patients with Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer

  • Background: Immune functions and their relation to prognosis in breast cancer patients have become areas of great interest in recent years. Correlations between survival outcomes and peripheral blood flow cytometry parameters are therefore of interest. Here we focused on patients with non-metastatic breast cancer (BC). Materials and Methods: A total of 29 patients with pathological confirmed breast carcinoma and flow cytometry data were assessed for overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS). Results: The median age of the patients was 54 years (range, 29-83). Multivariate analysis revealed that OS was significantly associated with absolute cytotoxic T cell count (95%CI, coef 2.26, p=0.035), tumor size (95%CI, coef -14.5, p 0.004), chemotherapy (95%CI, coef 12.9, p 0.0001), MFI of CD4 (95%CI, coef -5.1, P 0.04), MFI of HLA DR (95%CI, coef -5.9, p 0.008) and tumor grade (95%CI, coef -13, P 0.049) with R-Sq(adj)=67%. Similar findings were obtained for PFS. Conclusions: OS and PFS were significantly associated with tumor grade, tumor size, chemotherapy, MFI of CD4, HLA DR and absolute cytotoxic T cell count. The study revealed that MFI of basic CD markers and absolute cytotoxic T cell number may be a prognostic factors in women with non-metastatic BC.

노후 소득수준이 생활만족도에 미치는 영향: 준거집단의 상대소득 효과를 중심으로 (Effects of Old-age Income Level on Life Satisfaction: Focusing on Effects of the Relative Income of Reference Groups)

  • 본 연구에서는 12개년의 종단면 시계열 자료를 활용하여 절대소득과 상대소득을 포함한 노후의 소득수준이 생활만족도에 영향을 미치는지의 여부를 검증하였다. 연구결과, 자산분위별, 지역별 및 학력기준에 따른 각 준거집단의 상대소득이 노인 자신의 절대소득보다 노후의 생활만족도에 더 큰 영향력을 미치고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 횡단자료를 이용한 상관관계 분석에서도 상대소득은 생활만족도와 밀접한 관련성을 갖는 것으로 나타났으며 종단자료를 이용한 패널분석모형에서 준거집단의 상대소득 수준은 노후의 생활만족도 수준결정에 있어 유의미한 영향을 보이고 있었다. 비교대상이 되는 준거집단의 소득수준보다 상대적으로 자신의 소득수준이 높을 경우에 노후의 삶의 만족도는 증가하는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 과거 시점의 생활만족도 수준도 현재 노인의 평균 생활만족도 결정에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 종단자료 분석에서 나타난 이러한 분석결과는 중장기적 관점에서의 노인의 생활만족도 결정과정에서 기존의 절대소득가설보다는 상대소득가설이 보다 타당하다는 사실을 입증하고 있다. 구체적인 학문적 및 실천적 함의로는 정책당국의 경제적 지원만으로는 충분치 않으며 노인일자리를 창출·보급함으로써 노인들의 사회참여 기회를 제공하는 것이 필요하며, 다양한 형태의 비경제적 사회참여 확대 및 이를 보장하기 위한 체계적인 노력이 뒷받침되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.

Effects of age of L2 acquisition and L2 experience on the production of English vowels by Korean speakers

  • The current study investigated the influence of age of L2 acquisition (AOA) and length of residence (LOR) in the L2 setting country on the production of voicing-conditioned vowel duration and spectral qualities in English by Korean learners. The primary aim was to explore the ways in which the language-specific phonetic features are acquired by the age of onset and L2 experience. Analyses of the archived corpus data produced by 45 native speakers of Korean showed that, regardless of AOA or LOR, absolute vowel duration was used as a salient correlate of voicing contrast in English for Korean learners. The accuracy of relative vowel duration was influenced more by onset age than by L2 experience, suggesting that being exposed to English at an early age may benefit the acquisition of temporal dimension. On the other hand, the spectral characteristics of English vowels were more consistently influenced by L2 experience, indicating that immersive experience in the L2 speaking environment are likely to improve the accurate production of vowel quality. The distinct influence of the onset age and L2 experience on the specific phonetic cues in L2 vowel production provides insight into the intricate relationship between the two factors on the manifestation of L2 phonological knowledge.

German Shepherd에서 골수침윤과 재생불량성빈혈을 동반한 급성림프모구성백혈병 1증례 (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with Bone Marrow Infiltration and Hypoplastic Anemia in a German Shepherd)

  • A male German Shepherd dog, $2{\frac{1}{2}}$years of age, was admitted with sudden anemia, weakness, hyperpyrexia, anorexia and lethargy. The patient showed hypoplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, absolute and relative lymphocytosis, absolute and relative granulocytopenia, hypoalbuminemia, slight hepatic disorder, slight azotemia, hematuria and proteinuria by the screening examination. The bone marrow aspiration smear showed high cellularity, severs infiltration of lymphoblasts and prolymphocytes, and mitotic figures of lymphoid cells. The liver aspiration smear demonstrated infiltration of lymphoblasts. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia was diagnosed as none of the superficial lymph nodes showed enlargement and marked functional disorder of important organs other than the liver was not found. The patient was treated with vincristine, cyclophophamide, predniosolone for chemotherapy and blood transfusion and either ampicillin or cefoperazone for supportive treatment. But the patient did not show marked remission and died 9 days after the start of the chemptherapy. The necropsy was not permitted.

RED GIANT BRANCH OF THE METAL POOR GLOBULAR CLUSTERS: I. BUMP, TIP, AND DISTANCE FROM NEAR INERARED PHOTOMETRY

  • We use near-infrared observations of eight selected Galactic globular clusters to estimate their distances by comparing the observed and theoretically predicted K magnitudes of the red giant branch bumps and tips. The K magnitude levels of the RGB bump and tip have been measured from the luminosity function of the selected RGB stars in the clusters. Theoretical absolute $M_k$ magnitudes of the RGB bump and tip are taken from the Yonsei-Yale isochrones. Comparing the observed apparent K magnitude with the derived absolute $M_k$ magnitude, we calculate the distance moduli of the clusters. We discuss the dependency of the derived distance modulus on the cluster age and the uncertainty of the distance measurement from the near-infrared photometry of the RGB bump and tip.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide for the basic data useful to the effective production and marketing of the foundation garment befitting adult women's shapes and preferences, and thereby, help them improve their apparel life. For this purpose, 563 Korean women aged between 20-59 were sampled to survey their recognition and actual wearing condition of foundation garments and positively identify the factors affecting the practices and thereupon, determine the correlations among them by age group. The raw data of this study is processed by SPSS Win(10.1) and analyzed by using frequency, percentage, $x^2$-test, ANOVA, Duncan-test. The most of adult women were aware of their foundation size and the absolute majority of them wore brassieres, while a half of them used the girdles. The adult women had 5.7 Brassieres and 2.2 Girdles. The use of the foundation depended much on user's age or seasons. They had begun to wear Brassieres at their age of 15 on an average and Girdle around their age of 19 depending their individual needs. It has been found through this study that adult women's is actual wearing condition of foundation garments differ by age group, which may well suggest that foundation production need to consideration this age-wise practices when setting up their foundation production and marketing strategies.

선캠브리아 경기육괴 중 대리암의 연대측정에 대한 예비연구 (Precambrian Kyeonggin gneiss complex)

  • 주로 연대측정이 어려운 변성최적암류로 이루어진 선캠브리아의 경기육괴에 대해 정량적 연대측정 방법을 개발하기 위하여 대리암에 대한 연대측정법의 적용 가능성에 대해 연구하였다. 이 지역의 대리암은 대부분 규산염 광물을 함유하고 있으므로 염산을 사용한 선별용해 실험을 하였다. 미량원소 분석결과 Zr과 Rb은 거의 대부분 잔류물에 함유되어 있으며 U도 염산용해 부분보다는 잔류물에 많이 포함되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 Pb, Sr, Sm, Nd은 양쪽에 비슷하게 포함되며 Th은 다소 복잡한 양상을 보인다. 선별용해에 의한 Sr 동위원소 분석시에는 Sr 동위원소비가 높은 규산염 광물의 영향을 쉽게 영향을 받기 때문에 많은 주의와 연구가 요구된다. 탄산염 광물로만 구성된 순수한 대리암 시료를 골라 여러 조각으로 나눈 후 각각에 대해 분석된 Pb 동위원소비로부터 연대를 구하는 방법이 Sr 동위원소 분석에 의한 연대측정보다 성공 가능성이 높은 연대측정법으로 판단된다.

Embryonic Growth, Hatching Time and Hatchability Performance of Meat Breeder Eggs Incubated under Continuous Green Light

  • The effects of dark-control (D) and continuous green light (GL) exposure of incubated meat-type breeder eggs (Hybro) on embryonic growth from 5 to 15 days of age, hatching time, hatchability per cent and chick hatching weight were investigated in three consecutive experiments at 33, 38, and 41 weeks of age. A total of 798 eggs were used in this study. Eggs were set in an incubator on trays either in the D or under two tubes of 20-watt green fluorescent light during the first 18 days of incubation. Eggs from both treatments were transferred to the dark hatching compartment at 19 days of incubation. The light intensity was in the range of 1,340 to 1,730 lux at the surface of the eggs. GL incubation of eggs significantly (p<0.01) increased weight (expressed as an absolute value) and daily weight gain of embryos at 11 and continued to 15 days of age, hatchability per cent by 4.8%, reduced dead embryos per cent and chick weight at hatch by 37 and 2%, respectively and accelerated hatching time by about 24 h when compared with the D-control incubation. Chicks hatched at 504 h of incubation had significantly (p<0.01) higher body weight, expressed as an absolute value or as a percentage of egg weight, than those hatched earlier at 456 h of incubation. It was concluded that the GL incubation of meat breeder eggs reduced incubation period and chick weight at hatch and increased embryonic growth and hatchability per cent.
