Hydraulic reciprocating seals have been widely used to prevent fluid leakage and to provide lubricant film on counter surface in various hydraulic system. The degradation of the seal may cause the catastrophic failure of the hydraulic system. To assess the durability of the seals and the compatibility with counter surface, accelerated life testing (ALT) has been typically employed from industry. However, ALT often takes up to a few months to cause a failure of the seals, and therefore, there is a need to develop more efficient ALT methods. In this work, the degradation characteristics of polyurethane (PU) seals from field test are investigated and they are compared to those from the component and bench tests, with an aim to contribute to the development of ALT method. From the comparison of the cross-sectional profiles of the sealing surface of the PU specimens before and after the tests, both wear and compression set are found to be responsible for degradation of the PU seals. It is also shown that the major wear mechanisms of the PU seals from the field is abrasive wear and formation of pits. The component and bench tests performed in this work are shown to reproduce such wear mechanisms, and therefore, those test methods can be used as an ALT method for PU seals. In particular, the bench test proposed in this work may be effectively utilized to assess the durability and the compatibility of the seals with the counter surface. The results of this work are expected to aid in the design of ALT for PU seal.
Chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) process was studied in terms of tribology in this paper. CMP performed by the down force and the relative motion of pad and wafer with the slurry is typically tribological system composed of friction, wear and lubrication. The piezoelectric quartz sensor for friction force measurement was installed and the friction force was detected during CMP process. Various coefficient of friction was attained and analyzed with the kind of pad, abrasive and the abrasive concentration. The lubrication regime is also classified with ${\eta}v/p(\eta,\;v\;and\;p;$ the viscosity, relative velocity and pressure). Especially, the co-relation not only between the friction force and the removal per unit distance but also between the coefficient of friction and within-wafer-nonuniformity was estimated.
The use of CBN tool material has been greatly increased because of the superior metal cutting performance for the machining of hardened steel. This paper presents some experimental results on the ball endmiling of harened steels. Three different hardnesses of STD11 workpieces were machined using CBN ball endimills, and the machining characteristics including cutting forces tool wear, and surface roughness of machined surface were compared. It has been found that the CBN ball endmill works better in the machining of harder workpieces. The microscopic examination explains that this unusual phenomenon is caused by the difference of microstructure of each workpieces.
The characteristics of abrasive wear on sliding speed of glass fiber reinforcement (GF/PUR) composites were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The cumulative wear volume, friction coefficient and surface roughness of these materials on sliding speed were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of resin, ploughing, delamination, and cracking by scanning electric microscopy (SEM) photograph of the tested surface. As increasing the sliding speed the GF/PUR composites indicated higher friction coefficient. The surface roughness of the GF/PUR composites was increased as the sliding speed was higher in wear test.
The fracture characteristics and tool life of ceramics and WC, CBN cutting tool when turning heat treated steel STD11($H_RC$ 60) were investigated experimentally to clarify the machinability and optimum tool materials in cutting of difficult-to-cut material with high hardness. Forthermore, the behaviors of the tool wear and failure were examined with regard to cutting force. The hardened steel wore the cutting tool edge rapidily and increased the cutting forces, especially radial force. The tool was worn by the abrasive action. Flank Weat of $Al_2O_3-TiC$ ceramic and WC tool become relatively large and CBN & $Al_2O_3$, ceramic tool had a long life among the tool materials tested. The tool fracture patterns were just like minor cutting wear, flank wear, crater wear, notch wear, chipping. Flank wear rate was accelerated by occurrence of chipping. During the proceeding of machining, it was possible to foresee the catastrophic fracture of tool by abrupt increase of radial force.
This paper deals with wear characteristics of ion-nitrided metal theoretically and experimentally in order to analysis of wear phenomena. Wear tests show that compound layer of ion-nitrided metal reduces wear rate when the applied wear load is mall. However, as th load becomes large, the existence of compound layer tends to increase wear rate. The residual stress at the surface of ion-nitrided metal is measured, and the internal stress distribution is calculated when the normal and tangential forces are applied to the surface of metal. Compressive residual stress is largeest at the compound layer, and decreases as the depth from the surface increases. Calculation shows that the maximum stress exists at a certain depth from the surface when normal and tangential force are applied, and that the larger the wear load is the deeper the location of maximum stress becomes. In the analysis, it is found that under small applied wear load the critical depth, where voids and cracks may be created and propagated, is located at the compound layer, as the adhesive wear, where hardness is an important factor, is created the existence of compound layer reduces the amount of wear. When the load becomes large the critical depth is located below the compound layer, and delamination, which may be explained by surface deformation, crack nucleation and propagation, is created, and the existence of compound layer increases wear rate.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the anti-erosive/abrasive effect of resin infiltration of previous deproteinized dentin. Materials and Methods: Dentin slabs were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n = 15): Control (no deproteinization; no resin infiltrant applied), RI (no deproteinization; resin infiltrant applied), and DRI (deproteinization; resin infiltrant applied). After undergoing the assigned treatment, all slabs were subjected to an in vitro cycling model for 5 days. The specimens were immersed in citric acid (0.05 M, pH = 3.75; 60 seconds; 3 times/day) and brushed (150 strokes). Between the challenges, the specimens were exposed to a remineralizing solution (60 minutes). The morphological alterations were analyzed by mechanical profilometry (㎛) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were submitted to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). Results: Control and RI groups presented mineral wear and did not significantly differ from each other (p = 0.063). DRI maintained a protective layer preserving the dentin (p < 0.001). After erosive/abrasive cycles, it was observed that in group RI, only 25% of the slabs partially evidenced the presence of the infiltrating, while, in the DRI group, 80% of the slabs presented the treated surface entirely covered by a resin-component layer protecting the dentin surface as observed in SEM images. Conclusions: The removal of the organic content allows the resin infiltrant to efficiently protect the dentin surface against erosive/abrasive lesions.
Friction and wear behavior of a carbon/carbon composite material for aircraft brake material was experimentally investigated. Friction and wear test setup was designed and built for the experiment. Friction and wear tests were conducted under various sliding conditions. Friction coefficients were measured and processed by a data acquisition system and amount of wear measured by a balance. Stainless steel disk was used as the counterface material. Temperature was also measured by inserting thermocouple 2.5 mm beneath the sliding surface of the carbon/carbon composite specimen. Wear surfaces were observed by SEM, and analyzed by EDAX. The experimental results showed that sliding speed and normal force did not have significant effects on friction coefficient and wear factor of the composite. Temperature increase just below the surface was not large enough to cause any thermal degradation or oxidation which occurred at higher temperature when tested by TGA. Wear film was generated both on the specimen and on the counterface at relatively low sliding speed but cracks, grooves, and wear debris were observed at high sliding speed. Friction coefficient remained almost constant when the sliding speed or normal load was varied. It is believed that the adhesive and abrasive components contributed mainly to the friction coefficient. Wear behavior at low sliding speed was governed by wear film formation and adhesive wear mechanism. At high speed, fiber orientation, ploughing by counterface asperities, and fiber breakage dominated wear of the carbon/carbon composite.
Microstructure, hardness and wear characteristics of $SiC_p/Al-6.5wt%Si-1.7wt%Mg$ alloy composites fabricated by the method of rheo-compocasting and hot pressing are investigated in this study. The dispersion of SiC particles in the composites is homogeneous and the hardness improves as additional amount increases. The wear amount of the matrix metal increases highly as wear rates increase, for the wear mechanism changes from adhesive wear to melt wear, and the matrix metal was coated on the surface of revolving disc and its weight increases. In the 5vol% composites, Fe is adhered on the surface of specimen by the projection of the dispersed hard SiC particles which have net-work structure and the coating layer is about $300{\mu}m$. But in the composite more than 20vol%, the wear amount of composite decreases because the SiC particles which have superior hardness, wear resistance and heat resistance properties resist wear, the abrasive wear turn out predominant wear mechanism and so the wear amount of revolving disc increases.
The flow induced vibration in the nuclear fuel assembly causes the fretting wear between the fuel cladding tubes and the supporting grids. The reduction in tube thickness due to the fretting wear could be related to the serious damage on nuclear fuel assembly. In this paper, the effect of the water flow on fretting wear of nuclear fuel cladding tube against supporting grid was investigated through the fretting wear tester with water spout equipment. The test results were compared with the data conducted in the stationary water. At stationary water environment the wear debris was trapped between fretting surfaces, and then the fretting wear occurred by three-body abrasion. However, in the case of water flow, the two-body abrasive wear was the dominant wear mechanism, because the wear debris was easily removed by water flow.
