Conventional polishing of stone panel edges has been done by hand. While this has changed somewhat with the advent of automatic machines, it is still very much a hand finishing technology. For the development of edge shape milling tool, the primary test on characteristics of edge shape milling tool was carried out. This paper presents the results of tests focused upon the milling capability that was varied by the variables of operation parameters. Author tried to confirm the effect of six operation parameters of equipment such as rotation speed, advance speed, applied load, water flow rate and rotational direction. The result from test was described in term of shape milling capability that was defined as cutting volume of rock by unit weight of tool wear. The variance of the results could indicate the optimum level of each operating parameters. The test was also carried out to determine the abrasion resistance varied according to the abrasive flow rate. The abrasion resistance was increased with the abrasive flow rate, but over some rate it was not changed.

Waterjet has been comprehensively used in urban areas owing to a suitable technique for cutting concrete and rock, and low noise and vibration. Recently, the abrasive waterjet technique has been adopted and applied by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute to demolish concrete plugging without disturbing and damaging In-situ Demonstration of Engineered Barrier System in the disposal research tunnel. In this study, the use of abrasive waterjet in the tunnel was evaluated for practical applicability and the existing cutting model was compared with the experimental results. As a variable for waterjet cutting, multi-cutting, water flow rate, abrasive flow rate, and standoff distance were selected for the diversity of analysis. As regarding the practical application, the waterjet facilitated path selection for cutting the concrete plugging and prevented additional disturbances in the periphery. The pump's noise at idling was 64.9 dB which is satisfied with the noise regulatory standard, but it exceeded the standard at ejection to air and target concrete because the experiment was performed in the tunnel space. The experimental result showed that the error between the predicted and measured cutting volume was 12~13% for the first cut and 16% for second cut. The standoff distance had a significant influence on the cutting depth and width, and the error tended to decrease with decrement of standoff distance.

In this paper, to improve the efficiency of pressurized pneumatic grit conveying for ship block open blasting process. Pressurized pneumatic grit conveying is defined as the transportation of grit(abrasive) in a compressed air flow. Total Pressure loss in flexible hose for pneumatic conveying is sum of pressure losses due to gas and grit and needle type pressure transmitter for measured pressure loss. haracteristics of grit open blasting by pneumatic conveying were studied experimentally. Studies variables were blasting nozzle ID, length and ID of flexible hose, grit flow rate, flow rate and pressure of transport air. It was experimentally proved that optimal open blasting condition and cost effective operation regarding grit blasting, obtaining a high qulity surface preparation(Sa $2^{\frac{1}{2}}$).

Ceramic plates containing many micro-holes are used in diverse applications such as MCP (Microchannel Plate). catalytic converters, filters, electrical insulators in integrated circuits, and so on. One of the efficient methods for machining many holes in ceramic plates is wet drilling of ceramic green bodies followed by sintering them. Since the strength of ceramic green bodies is much lower than the strength of sintered ceramic plate, ceramic green bodies can be drilled with high feed rate. The axial force during micro-drilling of ceramic green bodies increases rapidly at high feed rate, which induces the crack in workpiece. Therefore, the tool lift of micro-drill with respect to feed rate may be determined by the predicting increase of axial force. In this work, the axial force during micro-drilling was calculated using the chip flow model on the micro-drill tip. from which the tool life of diamond abrasive micro-drill during micro-drilling of ceramic green bodies was calculated.

It is well known that abrasive waterjet (AWJ) was developed as a kind of high-density energy processing technologies. AWJ is used to obtain cutting quality of various materials such as metal, ceramics, glass and composite materials within a short manufacturing time because of the characteristics of heatless and noncontact processing. However, surface roughness and dimension error like round, burr, taper vary severely according to the processing conditions such as pressure, cutting speed, orifice diameter, stand off distance and abrasive flow rate. In this paper, the effect of the shape of mixing chamber on surface quality is studied. Three types of mixing chamber - round, parabolic, elliptical - are suggested and each performance is compared to that of cylindrical mixing chamber experimentally. From the result, is proved to be the optimal mixing chamber in the aspect of surface quality the parabolic one.
White cast iron of 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W was casted, and then heat treated with three different methods such as homogenizing, austenitizing and tempering to observe its effects on the microstructure, hardness and abrasive wear resistance. In uni-directional soldification, bamboo tree-like $M_7C_3$ carbide grew along with the heat flow direction, and fishbone-like $M_6C$ carbide was dispersed randomly among $M_7C_3$ carbides. While almost pearlitic structures were observed in the as-cast specimen, those of the heat treated specimens consisted of secondary carbide, retained austenite and tempered martensite. In austenitized specimen, the amounts of retained austenite were 60.88% due to the higher cooling rate encountered in forced air cooling. On the other hand, the amounts of retained austenite were reduced from 60.88% to 23.85% in tempered specimen due to the transformation of austenite into tempered martensite. The hardness of tempered specimen showed the highest value, and then decreased in the order of austenitized, as-cast and homogenized specimens. But, the abrasive wear resistance of austenitized specimen was the highest, and then decreased in the order of tempered, as-cast and homogenized specimens.

Abrasive fluid jet polishing processes have been used for the polishing of optical surfaces with complex shapes. However, unstable and unpredictable polishing spots can be generated due to the fundamental property of an abrasive fluid jet that it begins to lose its coherence as the jet exits a nozzle. To solve such problems, MR fluid jet polishing has been suggested using a mixture of abrasives and MR fluid whose flow properties can be readily changed according to imposed magnetic field intensity. The MR fluid jet can be stabilized by imposed magnetic fields, thus it can remain collimated and coherent before it impinges upon the workpiece surface. In this study, MR fluid jet polishing characteristics of fused silica glass were investigated according to injection time and magnetic field intensity variations. Material removal rates and 3D profiles of the generated polishing spots were investigated. From the results, it can be confirmed that the developed MR fluid polishing system can be applied for stable and predictable precise polishing of optical parts.
Sapphire is currently used as a substrate material for blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The market for sapphire substrates has expanded rapidly as the use of LEDs has extended into various industries. However, sapphire is classified as one of the most difficult materials to machine due to its hardness and brittleness. Recently, a lap-grinding process has been developed to combine the lapping and diamond mechanical polishing (DMP) steps in a single process. This paper studies, the effect of wafer surface roughness on the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process by pressure and abrasive concentration in the lap-grinding process of a sapphire wafer. In this experiment, the surface roughness of a sapphire wafer is measured after lap-grinding by varying the pressure and abrasive concentration of the slurry. CMP is carried out under pressure conditions of 4.27 psi, a plate rotation speed of 103 rpm, head rotation speed of 97 rpm, and slurry flow rate of 170 ml/min. The abrasive concentration of the CMP slurry was 20wt, implying that the higher the surface roughness after lapgrinding, the higher the material removal rate (MRR) in the CMP. This is likely due to the real contact area and actual contact pressure between the rough wafer and polishing pad during the CMP. In addition, wafers with low surface roughness after lap-grinding show lower surface roughness values in CMP processes than wafers with high surface roughness values; therefore, further research is needed to obtain sufficient surface roughness before performing CMP processes.
