Studies on Biomass for Young Abies koreana Wilson

  • This study was undertaken to compare the biomass of Abies koreana growing at two sites. A $10{\times}10m$ plot was established in each site of a natural stand in Mt. Jiri and a plantation in Gyeongsan nursery. Five trees of A. koreana were randomly selected in each site. The following traits were investigated from each tree : height, basal diameter, age, weight of stem, branches, and needles as above-ground traits and weight of total roots, horizontal roots, and vertical roots as below-ground traits. In Gyeongsan nursery, age of sample trees was negatively correlated with both height and weight of total stem, while height was highly correlated with weight of horizontal roots. There was high correlation between the basal diameter and weight of total stem, and between the basal diameter and weight of roots. In Mt. Jiri stand, most of the above-ground traits except age were significantly correlated with the below-ground traits. The linear regression equation between the cross section area of base (X) and the weight of total stem (Y) in Gyeongsan nursery was Y=12.66X-12.92, and correlation was significant ($R^2=0.89$). The linear regression equation between the cross section area of base(X) and the weight of total branches (Y) in Mt. Jiri stand was Y=25.51X+6.00, and correlation was highly significant ($R^2=1.0$).

Estimation of Above-Ground Biomass of a Tropical Forest in Northern Borneo Using High-resolution Satellite Image

  • Estimating above-ground biomass is important in establishing an applicable methodology of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) System for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation-Plus (REDD+). We developed an estimation model of diameter at breast height (DBH) from IKONOS-2 image that led to above-ground biomass estimation (AGB). The IKONOS image was preprocessed with dark object subtraction and topographic effect correction prior to watershed segmentation for tree crown delineation. Compared to the field observation, the overall segmentation accuracy was 64%. Crown detection percent had a strong negative correlation to tree density. In addition, satellite-based crown area had the highest correlation with the field measured DBH. We then developed the DBH allometric model that explained 74% of the data variance. In average, the estimated DBH was very similar to the measured DBH as well as for AGB. Overall, this method can potentially be applied to estimate AGB over a relatively large and remote tropical forest in Northern Borneo.

Biomass Structure and Dry Matter Dynamics in a Fire Influencing Montane Subtropical Humid Grassland, Western Ghats Southern India

  • The biomass structure for three major components viz., the dominant grass, Chrysopogon zeylanicus Thw., the 'other grasses' and the'remaining species'and dry matter dynamics for total community were studied over a period of one year in an annual fire influenced subtropical humid grassland community in Western Ghats, India. The biomass of aboveground, belowground and litter compartments were high as in other humid grasslands and generally have positive correlation with rainfall, rainy days and relative humidity with the exception of litter parts. The above and belowground net primary productions (4,561 and 722 g/㎡, respectively) were also higher and were comparable with other humid tropical grasslands. The turnover of organic matter was rapid, Of the total input of 14.47 g/㎡ into the system, about 86.3% was allocated to above ground parts and 13.7% to below ground parts. The total disappearance was 2.56 g/㎡ and it was accounted to be 17.68% of the total output. The net surplus of dry matter (82.32%) in the post fire community indicates that the grassland was maintained in a seral stage. Hence it is suggested that prescribed burning may keep this ecosystem in a highly productive and seral stage.

전남 여수지역 곰솔의 현존량 확장계수, 상대생장식 및 임분 현존량 (Biomass Expansion Factors, Allometric Equations and Stand Biomass of Pinus thunbergii in Southern Korea)

  • 곰솔의 줄기밀도, 현존량 확장계수, 상대생장식 및 임분 현존량을 파악하기 위하여 전라남도 여수지역에 위치하고 있는 15년생, 29년생, 45년생 등 3개 곰솔 천연임분을 대상으로 임분별 5주씩 총 15주의 표본목을 선정 벌목하여 조사하였다. 줄기밀도는 $0.440-0.457g/cm^3$이었으며, 임분간 유의적인 차이는 없었다. 지상부와 뿌리를 포함한 임목 전체의 현존량 확장계수는 모두 임령이 증가할수록 감소하였으며, 임분 1은 지상부 현존량 확장계수에서 임분 2, 3과 유의적인 차이가 있었고, 임목 전체 현존량 확장계수에서 임분 3과 유의적인 차이가 있었다. 이것은 임령이 증가할수록 줄기의 건중량 구성비가 높아지기 때문이며, 임분 1의 경우 유령림의 생장특성을 보이기 때문으로 판단되었다. 흉고직경(D) 또는 흉고직경과 수고($D^2H$)를 독립변수로 하고 부위별 건중량(Wt)을 종속변수로 하는 2개 유형의 상대생장식($Wt=aD^b$, $Wt=a(D^2H)^b$)을 유도하고 적합도를 검정하였다. 임분 1, 2, 3의 지상부 현존량은 각각 50.72t/ha, 89.92t/ha, 194.07t/ha이었으며, 뿌리를 포함한 임목 전체 현존량은 각각 61.62t/ha, 113.12t/ha, 248.36t/ha이었다.

경기도 태화산 V 영급 잣나무(Pinus koraiensis) 조림지의 지상부 바이오매스 상대생장식 개발 (Development of Allometric Equations for V Age-class Pinus koraiensis in Mt. Taehwa Plantation, Gyeonggi-do)

  • 임분 밀도가 410tree $ha^{-1}$이며 평균 흉고직경이 $29.1{\pm}5.2cm$인 경기도 태화산의 V영급 잣나무 조림지에서 흉고직경을 독립변수로 하고 부위별 바이오매스를 종속변수로 하는 상대생장식을 만들었다. 잣나무 넓적 잎벌 피해로 인해 잎의 바이오매스가 낮게 나타났으나, 총 바이오매스에 미치는 영향은 미미하였다. 그간의 연구를 종합한 결과, 개체목 지상부 상대생장식(logY=a+blogX)의 모수 a는 평균 흉고직경과 임분밀도에 가장 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났으나 b는 영향을 미치는 인자를 찾을 수 없었다. 임분 단위에서는 부위별로 잎은 6.68Mg $ha^{-1}$, 가지는 18.82Mg $ha^{-1}$, 줄기는 101.02Mg $ha^{-1}$로 나타났으며 이를 합한 지상부 총 바이오매스는 126.53Mg $ha^{-1}$로 나타났다. 국내 잣나무 임분의 지상부 바이오매스는 임령보다는 평균 흉고직경과 임분 밀도에 더 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났으며 두 인자를 사용하여 국내 잣나무 임분 바이오매스를 98% 이상 설명하는 간단한 회귀식을 도출할 수 있었다.

해변염생식물군집에 대한 생태학적 연구 (IV) - 입지조건이 다른 염생식물군집 (Ecological Studies on the Halophyto Communities at Western and Southern Coasts in Korea(IV)-The Halophyte Communities at the Different Salt Marsh Habitats)

  • Species composition, life form, biomass and soil properties of the halophyte communities were investigated from July to September, 1982. At the reclaimed land of Sanho-ri, sand dune of Jido, salt marsh of Suncheon Bay, and Somjin River estuary of Baealdo, species numbers were 26, 14, 13 and 7, dominant species were Salicornia herbaceae, Carex pumila and Suaeda japonica, respectively. Species composition of the 4 investigated areas was 13 families, 25 genera and 39 species, and of them, 10 families, 21 genera and 24 species were attributed to halophytes. Out of 22 life forms, the representative for Jido was $ G-D_4-R_1-3-e.t$and those for the other sites were Th-G4-R5-e. Above ground biomass of all species for Sanho-ri, Jido, Suncheon Bay and Baealdo were 441.3, 202.0, 150.7 and 353.3 g.dw/m2 and the ratios of above ground biomass halophytes to all species were 93.5, 92.7, 90.8 and 100%, respectively. The leading dominant species formed a continuum according to the salt gradiant. The similarity between Baealo and Suncheon Bay was relatively high, and Jido was quite different from the others in species composition. Aster tripolium was stenohaline and appeared at the low salt concentration, but Suaeda maritima and Suaeda asparagoides were duryhaline and occured at the relatively high salt concentration.

하천연변에 식재된 3년생 포플러 클론의 지상부 biomass의 질소 저장능력 추정추정 (Nitrogen Storage Potential in Aboveground Biomass of Three-year-old Poplar Clones in a Riparian Area)

  • 수변완충림으로 조성된 3년생 포플러 4클론에 대하여 biomass 생산능력과 주요 비점오염원 중 하나인 질소의 저장능력을 조사하였다. 현사시 72-31 및 미루나무 교잡종 Dorskamp 클론의 지상부 biomass 구성 비율은 줄기, 가지, 잎의 순으로 높았으며, 잎과 가지의 비율은 두 클론간에 차이를 보였다. 지상부 biomass의 질소 함량은 잎, 가지, 줄기의 순으로 높았고 72-31 클론의 잎과 가지의 질 소함량은 Dorskamp에 비해 높았으나 줄기의 질소 함량은 낮게 나타났다. 3년생 Ay48 클론의 지상부 biomass 추정량은 $37.5ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ 로 가장 높았으며, 72-31 클론이 가장 낮았다. 3년생 포플러 클론의 지상부 biomass의 질소 저장능력은 biomass 생산량의 순위와 일치하였다. 지상부 biomass 생산능력이 가장 우수한 3년생 Ay48 클론은 $218.3kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$의 질소를 지상부 biomass에 저장할 수 있는 것으로 추정되었다.

Estimation of Biomass and Carbon Stocks of Trees in Javadhu Hills, Eastern Ghats, India

  • Tropical dry forests are one of the most threatened, widely distributed ecosystems in tropics and estimation of forest biomass is a crucial component of global carbon emission estimation. Therefore, the present study was aimed to quantify the biomass and carbon storage in trees on large scale (10, 1 ha plots) in the dry mixed evergreen forest of Javadhu forest of Eastern Ghats. Biomass of adult (≥10 cm DBH) trees was estimated by non-harvest methods. The total biomass of trees in this tropical dry mixed evergreen forest was ranged from 160.02 to 250.8 Mg/ha, with a mean of 202.04±24.64 Mg/ha. Among the 62 tree species enumerated, Memecylon umbellatum accumulated greater biomass and carbon stocks (24.29%) more than the other species in the 10 ha study plots. ANOVA revealed that there existed a significant variation in the total biomass and carbon stock among the three plant types (Evergreen, brevi-deciduous and deciduous (F (2, 17)=15.343, p<0.001). Basal area and density was significant positively correlated with aboveground biomass (R2 0.980; 0.680) while species richness exhibited negative correlation with above ground biomass (R2 0.167). Finding of present study may be interpreted as most of the trees in this forest are yet to be matured and there is a net addition to standing biomass leading to carbon storage.

Biomass, Primary Nutrient and Carbon Stock in a Sub-Himalayan Forest of West Bengal, India

  • Quantitative information on biomass and available nutrients are essential for developing sustainable forest management strategies to regulate atmospheric carbon. An attempt was made at Chilapatta Reserve Forest in Duars region of West Bengal to quantify its above and below ground carbon along with available "N", "P" and "K" in the soil. Stratified random nested quadrats were marked for soil, biomass and litter sampling. Indirect or non-destructive procedures were employed for biomass estimation. The amount of these available nutrients and organic carbon quantified in soil indicates that the forest soil is high in organic carbon and available "K" and medium in phosphorus and nitrogen. The biomass, soil carbon and total carbon (soil C+C in plant biomass) in the forest was 1,995.98, 75.83 and $973.65Mg\;ha^{-1}$. More than 90% of the carbon accumulated in the forest was contributed by the trees. The annual litter production of the forest was $5.37Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Carbon accumulation is intricately linked with site quality factors. The estimated biomass of $1,995.98Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ clearly indicates this. The site quality factor i.e. tropical moist deciduous with optimum availability of soil nutrients, heavy precipitation, high mean monthly relative humidity and optimum temperature range supported luxuriant growth which was realized as higher biomass accumulation and hence higher carbon accumulated.

윤작지 녹비작물종류에 따른 토양탄소 함량 변화 (Differences of Soil Carbon by Green Manure Crops in Rotated Cropping System)

  • 본 연구는 국내에서 대표적으로 이루어지고 있는 녹비작물인 호밀, 트리티케일, 헤어리베치 단파와 트리티케일+헤어리베치 혼파를 대상으로 온실가스인 이산화탄소 저감을 위한 최적의 녹비작물을 선발 하기위하여 수행되었다. 윤작지 녹비작물의 지상부 바이오메스는 트리티케일+헤어리베치 664 kg $10a^{-1}$, 호밀 585 kg $10a^{-1}$, 트리티케일 545 kg $10a^{-1}$이었으며 대조구 대비 트리티케일+헤어리베치 181%, 호밀 160%, 트리티케일 149% 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 녹비작물 재배시기 동안 표토의 유기물 함량이 심토보다 높은 경향을 보였다. 토양 유기물 함량은 호밀 처리구에서 가장 높았고 그 다음이 트리티케일+헤어리베치 순으로 나타났다. 지상부 바이오메스 생산량이 많은 호밀, 트리티케일+헤어리베치 재배구에서 가장 높은 유기물 함량을 보인 것은 탄소함량과 C/N율 때문인 것으로 분석 (Wang et al., 2010)되며 C/N율은 토양 탄소와 밀접하게 관련 있으며 바이오메스 품질 (Mirsky et al., 2008)과 바이오메스 분해율을 결정하는 중요한 요인(Kemp et al., 2003) 이므로 본 연구에서 호밀과 트리티케일+헤어리베치는 녹비작물로 바이오메스 생산량도 높고 토양 탄소 함량 증진에도 효과가 높아 이산화탄소 저감에 효과적일 것이다.
