  • 70 cows with abomasal torsion and 71 cows with right-side displacement of the abomasum were examined to determine whether the preoperative blood base-excess concentration could be used both as a prognostic indicator for postoperative recovery in cows with abomasal torsion and as an aid in differentiating between abomasal torsion and right-side displacement of the abomasum. The survival rate of cows with abomasal torsion decreased as the base-excess concentration decreased(P=0.08). There was a significant difference(P<0.025) among base-excess ranges between abomasal torsion and right-side displacement of the abomasum. Most cows with base-excess concentrations ${\geq}15.0mEq/L$ and ${\leq}-0.5mEq/L$ had abomasal torsion, rather than right-side displacement of the abomasum.

  • Epizootiolosical factors of 166 cows with abomasal displacement were studied and in 21 out of 166 cows, the functions of liver and kidney were also tested. 1. Incidence of abomasal displacement was perdominant in small sized dairy herd less than 15 cows, using area of paddock below 165㎡. 2. Out of 166 cows with abomasal displacement, 116 cows (70%) were found left sided displacement and 50 cows (30%) were right. 3. Generally, one to two weeks were taken before treatment of veterinarian following onset of sign of the diseases. Therefore many cases were found to be severe in their illness. 4, Incidence rate of abomasal displacement was predominant in summer season (June, July and Au-gust). However, occurence of the disease was continuous throughout the year. About 80 percent of abomasal displacement was distributed from first to third purturition. 5. High milk production and feeding with high concentrates and low roughage showed a tendendy to occurs the disease. 6. Approximately 75% of abomasal displacement was distributed within 1 month pre and post partum. 7. Cows with abomasal displacement consumed little concetrates and 75% of cows with abomasal displacement passed abnormal fecal material. 8. Sixty six out of 166 cows with abomsal displacement were coincident with diseases such as retained placenta, metritis, traumatic reticulo-peritonitis and mastitis. 9. In many cass of abomasal displacement, abomasum was extended with gas. 10. Activities of AST ana LDH showed the trends to reduce after surgical intervention comparing with pre-surgery. Bilirubin concentration markedly decreased after surgical treatment comparing with pre-surgery. 11. The concentration of BUN and creatinine moderatly decreased after surgery compared with pre-surgery.

  • The occurrence of abomasal displacement in Tokachi Shimizu Cho, Hokkaido, Japan has been surveyed in relation to milk production from 1979 to 1986. In 1983 when dairy cows produced over 5.000kg of milk yield per year. the occurrence rate of abomasal displacement increased over 1%. Thereafter, the occurrence rate increased markedly as the milk production approached 6.000kg. In order to increase the number of cows which can be surgically corrected, a special ambulatory vehicle for surgery was designed. Since more cows were surgically corrected. there was a subsequent decrease in the culling rate of cows with abomasal displacement. The present survey indicated that the occurrence rate of abomasal displacement was closely related to milk production, and that surgical correction was a very effective method to treat this condition.

  • Twenty one cows in Goyang and Paju cities were referred due to displacement of the abomasum and foreign body in the rumen. Omentopexy and rumenotomy through a right flank celiotomy were performed for treatment of abomasal displacement and the foreign body removal in the rumen. The right paralumbar fossa is clipped and prepared surgically. Local anesthesia is instituted by performing inverted L block. The abdomen was entered through 25 to 30 cm vertical incision in the right paralumbar fossa starting 4 to 5 cm ventral to the transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae. A 14-gauge needle with rubber tubing attached is inserted to relieve the gaseous pressure and to facilitate further exploration and manipulation. The rumen was gently pulled out of the abdominal cavity and incision was made at the omentum. Rumenotomy was done and retrieved the foreign body. After the rumen was rinsed with sterile saline, the rumen wall was closed by a Lembert suture technique. The omentum was closed by a simple continuous suture. Right flank omentopexy was performed for the surgical correction of abomasal displacement. Recovery results among 21 cows included 9 excellent, 5 good, 2 fair and 5 bad. It was considered that operation of abomasal displacement and foreign body removal in the rumen through right flank celiotomy was a good surgical technique to reduce expenses, surgical pain, and surgery time.

  • Calving records of Holstein dairy cows from 2005 to 2010 comprising Goyang and Paju cities herd with 2,362 calving events representing 240 twin births were used to evaluate the effect of abomasal displacement and retained placenta after single or twin births on fertility. In retained placenta cows, the period of twin pregnancy (mean 270.5 days) was shorter than that of single pregnancy (mean 274.8 days), however first artificial insemination period (twin: mean 107.4 days, single: mean 92.0 days), non-pregnant period (twin: 154.8 days, single: 132.2 days), and number of insemination (twin: mean 2.00 times, single: mean 1.87 times) of twin pregnancy were increased as compared with single pregnancy. In abomasal displacement cows, first artificial insemination period (twin: mean 122.9 days, single: mean 106.0 days), non-pregnant period (twin: 172.4 days, single: 152.0 days), and number of insemination (twin: mean 2.16 times, single: mean 1.89 times) of twin pregnancy were increased as compared with single pregnancy. The prevalence of complication such as retained placenta, abomasal displacement with single or twin births increased first artificial insemination period, non-pregnant period, and number of insemination period.

  • Surgical treatment was performed in 507 heads out of 1078 dairly cows which were diagnosed as abomasal displacement. Out of 507 heads. bar suture was performed in 280 heads. Twelve heads out of 280 heads(4.9%) recurred. Incorrective suture of the reticulum or pylorus instead of abomasum occurred in 3 cows. The cows in which abdominal wall was sutured but the suture was not inserted into the abomasum were 4 heads. The cows in which bar was broken are 4 heads. A cow suffered peritonitis after bar suture. Bar suture technique is thought to be a good method as a first choice for the correction of abomasal displacement.

  • The preventive effects of calcium gluconate injection and administration of anion feed on occurrence rates of the abomasal displacement and retained placenta were examined from 86 pregnant cows reared in Paju and Goyang cities in Gyunggi Province. The cows were divided into 3 groups: control (30 heads), experimental group I (28 heads) and experimental group II (28 heads), respectively. The control cows were not treated at all. The cows in experimental group I were intravenously injected with calcium gluconate(CMPK, Am. Tech. Canada, 10 g/head). The cows in experimental group II were given with the anion feed (Goyang TMR, Korea, 9 kg/head/day). The occurrence rates of the abomasal displacement in experimental groups were lower than that of control group and experimental group revealed the lowest prevalence rate, however, significance was not detected. The occurrence rate of retained placenta in experimental groups revealed lower prevalence than that of control group and experiment group II showed the lowest prevalence rate(p<0.01). Considering the above findings collectively, it was thought that administration of anion feeds was affective for prevention of the bovine retained placenta during drying milk period.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the rate of twin pregnancy and parturition in dairy cows. Calving records of Holstein dairy cows from 1998 to 2009 comprising Goyang and Paju cities herd with 20,990 calving events representing 820 twin births were used to evaluate twinning rate, calf sex ratio, periods of pregnancy and complication after parturition in single and twin births. Overall, the reported twinning rate was 3.9% in Holstein dairy cows. Rate of bicornual pregnancy (75%) was larger than that of unicornual pregnancy (25%) among cows having twin. Regardless of parity, the greatest twinning rate was observed in fall season from September to November. Calf sex ratios (male, M; female, F) were 48.0% FM, 28.9% MM, 21.5% FF and 0.9% mummifications for twin calves. Parturition type among cows having twins included normal (4.7%), premature (66.9%), delayed (9.2%), abortion (18.4%) and mummification (0.8%). The period of pregnancy in twin pregnancy (mean 272.6 days) was shorter than single pregnancy (mean 278.1 days). The retained placenta after parturition was over fourth times such as twin parturition (34.8%) higher than single parturition (8.5%) and the abomasal displacement was over two times such as twin parturition (10.2%) higher than single parturition (4.9%). The distribution of twin pregnancy with parities was high rate during the 2~3 parities. The prevalence of complication such as retained placenta and abomasal displacement with twin parturition revealed higher than single parturition.
