  • Animal clones derived from somatic cells have been successfully produced in a variety of mammalian species such as sheep, cattle, mice, goats, pigs, cat and rabbits. However, there are still many unsolved problems in the present cloning technology. Somatic cell nuclear transfer has shown several developmental aberrancies including high rate of abortion in early gestation and increased perinatal death. These developmental failures of cloned embryos may arise from abnormal reprogramming of donor genome and/or incomplete cloning procedure. We have found that overall genomic methylation status of cloned bovine embryos is quite different from that of normal embryos in various genomic regions, suggesting that the developmental failures of cloned embryos may be due to incomplete reprogramming of donor genomic DNA. Many of the advances in understanding the molecular events for reprogramming of donor genome will more clarify the developmental defects of cloned embryos.

  • Modern companies have been facing devastating impacts from unexpected events such as demand uncertainties, natural disasters, and terrorist attacks due to the increasing global supply chain complexity. This paper proposes a multi stage logistic network model under disruption risk. To formulate the problem practically, we consider the effect of continuity rate, which is defined as a percentage of ability of the facility to provide backup allocation to customers in the abnormal situation and affect the investments and operational costs. Then we vary the fixed charge for opening facilities and the operational cost according to the continuity rate. The operational level of the company decreases below the normal condition when disruption occurs. The backup source after the disrup-tion is recovered not only as soon as possible, but also as much as possible. This is a concept of the business continuity plan to reduce the recovery time objective such a continuity rate will affect the investments and op-erational costs. Through numerical experiments, we have shown the proposed idea is capable of designing a resilient logistic network available for business continuity management/plan.

  • From 2009 when the CNS facility was installed, the number of reactor failures due to abnormal CNS facility system has increased significantly. Of the total of 19 nuclear reactor shutdowns over the six years from 2009 to 2019, there were 10 nuclear reactor shutdowns associated with the CNS facility, which are very numerous. Therefore, this report intends to analyze the history of nuclear reactor shutdowns due to CNS facility system failure in detail, and to present the root cause and solution to problems. As a result of FMEA implementation of CNS facility system, a total of 76 SPVs were selected. In addition, 10 cases of reactor shutdown history due to CNS facility system abnormalities were analyzed in detailed, and improvement plans for solving the root cause and problem were suggested for each trip history. The results of this study are expected to be able to operate the domestic research reactor and CNS facilities more stably by providing effective measures to prevent recurrence of CNS facilities and reactor trips.

  • Myelin is a specialized structure of the nervous system that both enhances electrical conductance and insulates neurons from external risk factors. In the central nervous system, polarized oligodendrocytes form myelin by wrapping processes in a spiral pattern around neuronal axons through myelin-related gene regulation. Since these events occur at a distance from the cell body, post-transcriptional control of gene expression has strategic advantage to fine-tune the overall regulation of protein contents in situ. Therefore, many research interests have been focused to identify RNA binding proteins and their regulatory mechanism in myelinating compartments. Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) is one such RNA binding protein, regulating its target expression by translational control. Although the majority of works on FMRP have been performed in neurons, it is also found in the developing or mature glial cells including oligodendrocytes, where its function is not well understood. Here, we will review evidences suggesting abnormal translational regulation of myelin proteins with accompanying white matter problem and neurological deficits in fragile X syndrome, which can have wider mechanistic and pathological implication in many other neurological and psychiatric disorders.

  • Background: Syncope is a common problem in children and adolescents. However, a large proportion of syncope cases have no underlying cause. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the severity of syncope using tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). Methods: This retrospective study included 61 children and adolescents with syncope who underwent echocardiography. The head-up-tilt test (HUT) was performed when there was a more severe syncopal event. We compared the echocardiographic findings between the execute HUT and nonexecute HUT, negative HUT result and positive HUT result, and normal electrocardiogram (ECG) and abnormal ECG groups. Data were analyzed using an unpaired t test post hoc analysis. Results: In the execute and nonexecute HUT groups, the odds ratios were 0.55 for medial E/E' (P=0.040) and 0.64 for lateral E/E' (P=0.049). Comparison of the results of the decreased, normal, and increased groups for lateral E/E' revealed a significant difference in the execution HUT and nonexecute HUT groups (overall, P=0.004; decreased vs. increased, P=0.003; normal vs. increased, P=0.050). Conclusion: Medial E/E' and lateral E/E' were decreased in patients with severe syncopal events. These findings suggest that the presence of left ventricular diastolic deterioration may cause hypoperfusion even in the absence of organic causes and, consequently, increase syncope severity and frequency. The TDI measured by echocardiography can be used as an index to predict syncope recurrence and/or severity.

  • The source code for Android is open and easy to modify depending on the purpose. Recently, this charateristic has been exploited to bypass the runtime protection technique and extract the original executable code. Unfortunately, Android devices are so fragmented that it is difficult to verify the integrity of the system. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a technique to verify the integrity of the execution environment indirectly using the features of the application permission. Before executing the original executable code, it loads and executes the dummy DEX file to monitor for abnormal events and determine whether the system is intact. The proposed technique shows a performance overhead of about 2 seconds and shows that it can detect the bypassing technique that is currently disclosed.

  • Cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema is defined as the abnormal introduction of air into the subcutaneous tissues of the head and neck. It is mainly iatrogenic and traumatic in origin. Our two case reports are also due to the same cause, but the features of the trauma and the site of the dental treatment are different from the existing reports. A 29-year-old man visited our hospital with facial swelling and pain after experiencing facial trauma in a soccer game. Another 55-year-old woman visited with similar symptoms after replacement of her maxillary anterior fixed prosthesis. In the two cases presented, subcutaneous emphysema was gradually treated with no complications during antibiotic prophylaxis and supportive care. In this paper, we report two cases of traumatic and iatrogenic subcutaneous emphysema and their diagnoses, etiologies, complications, and treatments based on a literature review.

  • Chemical decontamination of primary systems in a nuclear power plant (NPP) prior to commencing the main decommissioning activities is required to reduce radiation exposure during its process. The entire process is repeated until the desired decontamination factor is obtained. To achieve improved decontamination factors over a shorter time with fewer cycles, the appropriate flow characteristics are required. In addition, to prepare an operating procedure that is adaptable to various conditions and situations, the transient analysis results would be required for operator action and system impact assessment. In this study, the flow characteristics in the steady-state and transient conditions for the chemical decontamination operations of the Kori-1 NPP were analyzed and compared via the MARS-KS code simulation. Loss of residual heat removal (RHR) and steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) simulations were conducted for the postulated abnormal events. Loss of RHR results showed the reactor coolant system (RCS) temperature increase, which can damage the reactor coolant pump (RCP)s by its cavitation. The SGTR results indicated a void formation in the RCS interior by the decrease in pressurizer (PZR) pressure, which can cause surface exposure and tripping of the RCPs unless proper actions are taken before the required pressure limit is achieved.

  • In this paper, MEMS embedded system design implemented the sensor events via analyzing the characteristics that dynamically happened to an abnormal status in power IoT environments in order to guarantee a maintainable operation. We used three kinds of tools in this paper, at first Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology which is a suitable protocol that provides a low data rate, low power consumption, and low-cost sensor applications. Secondly LSM6DSOX, a system-in-module containing a 3-axis digital accelerometer and gyroscope with low-power features for optimal motion. Thirdly BM1422AGMV Digital Magnetometer IC, a 3-axis magnetic sensor with an I2C interface and a magnetic measurable range of ±120 uT, which incorporates magneto-impedance elements to detect the magnetic field when the current flowed in the power devices. The proposed MEMS system was developed based on an nRF5340 System on Chip (SoC), previously compared to the standalone embedded system without bluetooth technology via mobile App. And also, MEMS embedded system with BLE 5.0 technology broadcasted the MEMS system status to Android mobile server. The experiment results enhanced the performance of MEMS system design by combination of sensors, BLE technology and mobile application.
