Abandoned fishing nets served Little Tern(Sterna albifrons) chicks as cover on a sandy island on Ganwol Lake, Hongsung-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. Chicks were incidently caught in $2.5cm{\times}2.5cm$ mesh sized nets and died of dehydration and exhaustion. Three adults died when they were caught by abandoned fishing net during parental care period in $2.5cm{\times}2.5cm$ mesh sized nets. Whereas $0.7cm{\times}0.7cm$ mesh sized nets did not affect the chicks' or adults' survival. Overlapped nets with several layers were more dangerous for chicks than were spread nets with a single layer. Dead chicks and adults were found to have been entangled by wing and neck. In this study, wing and nape(head+bill) of dead chicks were longer than those of live chicks. To improve the survival rate of Little Tern chicks at Ganwol Lake, abandoned fishing nets must be removed before the breeding season.

Fishing pots are one of the important fishing gears in our coastal and offshore fisheries. In terms of a sustainable use of marine resources, there are concerns about the ghost fishing by lost pots. It is reported that 10 to 70% of the pots are abandoned or lost annually. This study is to compare the catching efficiency of drum type whelk pots that are made of biodegradable nets to those made of the ordinary nets, in the eastern coast of Korea. Five types of drum pots were used with combination of biodegradable nets and ordinary (PA, PE) nets applied to the main and funnel parts of the pots: pots with biodegradable nets (Bio+Bio); pots with PE net (PE+PE); pots with body and funnel made of biodegradable nets and PE nets respectively (Bio+PE); pots with body and funnel made of PE nets and PA nets respectively (PE+PA); pots with body and funnel made of PE nets and biodegradable net respectively (PE+Bio). Field experiments were conducted from June $18^{th}$, 2015 to August $7^{th}$, 2015 using a commercial fishing vessel in the Uljin waters on the eastern coast of Korea. Two fleets of pots with one hundred in each, 20 pots of each type, were casted for 8 to 15 days to analyze their catching efficiency. The catch of target species, whelks, was 202,563.0 g with catch rate of 38.7% of the total catch, while the bycatch was 320,709.7 g with the rate of 61.3% of the total catch. The catch of whelks was the highest in the Bio+PE pots (46,020.3 g), followed by the Bio+Bio pots (42,027.5 g), the PE+Bio pots (41,849.9 g) and the lowest being PE+PE pots (38,054.2 g). Compared to the conventional pots, the pots with biodegradable nets on the body or entrance part had slightly higher catch rate for both the target species and the bycatch. The PE+PE had the lowest catch rate. There is no significant difference in catch between the pots with biodegradable nets and the ordinary nets for the target species such as Buccinum opisthoplectum, Neptunea eulimata, Buccinum striatissimum. Consequently, using biodegradable nets for the conventional whelk pots can reduce ghost fishing by lost gears while keeping the performance of the pots.
Our ocean where three sides are the seas is the state that the environmental pollution damage is serious because of all kinds of wastes. Therefore, environmental pollution will be considerably decreased if we leans forward in the saddle to manage net which is conquering a section equivalent among wastes and will be helpful to marine ecosystem. This study is to develop a fishing net management system identifying nets cast and withdrawn from the vessel The purpose of FNMS is to manage sailing vessels arrival and departure details in order to manage a net abandoned in the ocean, and restrain the occurrence of the wasted net abandoned without permission in the ocean, and prevent environmental pollution and sailing vessels sank in and around the ocean.

Many merchant ships sail in the waters surrounding Jeju Island and many fishing vessels catch fish using gill nets, trolling lines, and so on. Meanwhile, marine waste has collected in the coastal waters of Jeju Island. However, there has been little research on the collection of marine waste in coastal waters. In this study, marine waste deposited in Jeju Island's northwest sea was collected using Jeju National University's training ship, and related vessels were analyzed for each gear type. According to the results, most coastal waters had abandoned fishing grounds, which were from fishing vessels, and a large proportion of them was gill net and trap fishing gear. To analyze how much marine waste is accumulating in a certain area and ship's stay time, we use automatic identification system (AIS) data to extract the time spent in the target sea, and the amount of marine waste per hour was analyzed in a unit distance of 1 ㎢. The average amount of marine waste generated per hour in the unit area was found to be 0.94 kg for gillnet fishing gear, 3.49 kg for trap fishing gear, 0.10 kg for trawl fishing gear, 0.11 kg for longline fishing gear, and 0.02 kg for other fishing gear.

The aim of this study was to examine the current situation of otter inhabitation and conservation and to collect basic information for establishing appropriate policies. We conducted the study around the Bukhan river from April to October 2009, mostly focusing on otter distribution, feeding habits, threats, and conservation measures. We divided the study area into 2 sectors: the dam area and the stream. We found 39 spraint sites in the dam area and 70 in the stream area. A significant difference was observed in the number of spraint sites between the upper stream and the lower stream. To evaluate the feeding habit, we collected and analyzed the frequency and bulk occurrence of the spraints. Among the prey items, fish were the most numerous (36.99%) followed by amphibians (17.22%). Fish showed the highest bulk occurrence in the dam area, and the bulk occurrence of amphibians and insects seemed to increase in the stream area. However, the bulk occurrence in the dam area seemed to be lower than that in the stream area (ANOVA, F = 3.99, p < 0.05). Fyke nets and abandoned fishing nets were found to be the most threatening factors. Further research on the systematic management of otters and the use of stop grids is required for better conservation of otters.

The coast of Incheon reaches Incheon itself, Gimpo, Siheung, and Ansan of Gyunggi-do. Because this area has been seriously polluted, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has established the Incheon Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) to preserve sea water quality as a marine environment asset. However, there is concern that actions taken in this area may change the surrounding marine ecology, being effected by farms, via a river that flows from waste lands, abandoned fishing activities and fishing nets, etc. Given this background, this study estimates the value of SAMP sea water quality using a choice experiment (CE). A CE survey of 1,000 households was undertaken, investigating trade-offs involving price and four attributes for selecting a preferred alternative to obtain a marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) estimate for each attribute. The estimation results showed that MWTP for a 1 %p improvement in sea water quality, the diversity of fauna species, the diversity of flora species, and a 1 %p reduction in marine litter as a result of conserving Incheon coastal sea water quality are estimated to be KRW 75, 135, 309 and 72 per household per year, respectively. All estimation results were statistically significant at the 1 % level. These findings can provide policy makers with useful information for evaluating and planning marine environmental management policies.
