  • A very simple a.c. magnetic susceptometer for use in a helium closed cycle cryostat is reported in this paper. This simple setup has only a single bobbin-less copper coil, instead of the primary coil and two secondary coils typically used in mutual-inductance types. The single bobbin-less copper coil is directly mounted on the cryostat cold head. A sample is attached on the inside wall of the copper coil using a thermal contact material and its a.c. magnetic susceptibility is obtained from the measurement of the self-inductance of the sample coil using an LCR meter or an impedance analyzer. Experimental details are described and illustrative measurements on magnetic and superconducting materials as a function of temperature are included. The performances and limitations of this simple a.c. magnetic suceptometer are also discussed.

  • Using a SQUID magnetometer, the diamagnetic susceptibility of NaCl aqueous solution was measured with high accuracy in a magnetic field of up to 6 Tat 25$\pm0.05^{\circ}C$. The NaCl concentrations adopted in this experiment were 0 (water), 7.5, 15, 23, 26.2, 26.6 and 100% (crystal) with the concentration error of $\pm$0.04%. Experimental data was compared with the calculated value of susceptibility derived from dependence of the vapor pressure on NaCl concentration As a result, our measured value was almost in accordance with the calculated value. It was found that the diamagnetic susceptibility shows a decrease of approximately 10% within the saturated concentration (26.2%) and that the susceptibility is one of the effective cause for the concentration dependence in the gas-liquid interface deformation of the NaCl solution.

  • Mineral medicines are single or mixtures of minerals and rocks which have been used to treat disease. Recently, their application has been increased by emphasizing the physical properies of the medicines, in addition to their chemical properies. In this study, mineralogical, chemical, spectroscopic and magnetic properties were measured using X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Ff-Infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass magnetic susceptibility. Experiments were done using these properties to evaluate application of traditional mineral medicines such as Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok. Mineralogical study proves that Yanggiseok, generally known as tremolite, consists of actinolite. Yeonok for medical usage mostly consists of fine grained tremolite. Eumgiseok is mainly composed of vermiculite and minor kaolinite and halloysite. Yeonok and Yanggiseok, belong to the amphibole group among inosilicates and both have similar emission power properties. The intensity of emission power, calculated from FT-IR measurements, follows in the order of Yeonok, Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok at 40$^{\circ}$C and Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok in such order at 150$^{\circ}$C. As a result of NMR analysis after 20 days in distilled water, the three mineral medicines decreased in the following order; Eumgiseok, Yanggiseok and Yeonok. However, the same minerals decreased in the order of Eumgiseok, Yeonok and Yanggiseok after 80 days. In response temperature, magnetic susceptibility of Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok systematically increased by heating to 25$^{\circ}$C, 100$^{\circ}$C and 700$^{\circ}$C. Magnetic susceptibility of Yeonok shows a decreasing pattern due to heating.

  • Since the used materials of furnace heater tube with different kinds of thermal degradation were not commonly available, the HK-40 steel specimens were heat-treated isothermally at elevated temperature to simulate the microstructure at the service temperature. HK-40 steel specimens with five different aging time were prepared by isothermal heat treatment at $1050^{\circ}C$. The characteristics of the magnetic susceptibility have been investigated for the degradation evaluation of HK-40 steel. The magnetic susceptibility at room temperature increases as the extent of degradation of the materials increases. The variation of magnetic susceptibility was compared with the variation of tensile properties and Vickers hardness. To investigate the effect of the microsturctural change on the characteristics of tensile properties, hardness and magnetic susceptibility, the microstructures were examined by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and the chemical compositions were analyzed by a energy spectrometer of SEM. As a result, the magnetic susceptibility method can be suggested as one of the nondestructive evaluation methods for the degradation of the HK-40 steel.

  • We have developed a fast steady state free precession interferometry (SSFPI) technique which is useful for the fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging). As is known, SSFP sequence with a suitable adjustment of gradient (readout) allows us to measure precession angle $\theta$ which is in turn related to the field inhomogeneity [1-3]. When the method is applied to the susceptibility effect based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), it was found that the direct susceptibility effect measurement was possible without perturbations such as the backgrounds and inflow effect. In this paper, simulation results and experimental results obtained with 2.0 Tesla MRI system are also presented.

  • When viewed using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, invasive materials inside the human body, in many cases, severely distort the MR image of human tissues. The degree of the MR image distortion increases in proportion not only to the difference in the susceptibility between the invasive material and the human tissue, but also to the intensity of the magnetic field induced by the MRI system. In this study, by blending paramagnetic Ti particles with diamagnetic graphite, we synthesized $Ti_{100-x}C_x$ composites that can reduce the artifact in the MR image under the high-strength magnetic field. Of the developed composites, $Ti_{70}C_{30}$ showed the magnetic susceptibility of ${\chi}=67.6{\times}10^{-6}$, which corresponds to 30% of those of commercially available Ti alloys, the lowest reported in the literature. The level of the MR image distortion in the vicinity of the $Ti_{70}C_{30}$ composite insert was nearly negligible even under the high magnetic field of 4.7 T. In this paper, we reported on a methodology of designing new structural materials for bio-applications, their synthesis, experimental confirmation and measurement of MR images.

  • The temperature dependence of the magentic moment was determined for the system of high $T_{c}$ superconductor $Y_{1-X}Sm_{x}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ with x=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0, 6, 0.8 and 1.0. Also the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic critical current density were measured from the magnetic hysterisis loops obtained at 30 K. From the results of the magnetic susceptibility measurements, the high $T_{c}$ phase were ranged from 14.7 to 49.1%. The values of the magnetic critical current densities were in the range of $10^3~10^4A/cm^2$. The penetration depth was approximately ninety times larger than the coherence length.

  • A portable RF HTS SQUID-based susceptometer was used for small size magnetized sample testing in weak DC (up to 200A/m) and AC (up to 4 A/m) magnetic fields. The system resolution for the magnetic moment is of the order of $1.6{\times}10^{-10} A.m^2$. The measured DC susceptibility of a tested sample agrees well with the value obtained by using a commercial liquid helium susceptometer.

  • Magnetic properties of YIG films grown by solid phase epitaxy (SPE) was measured as a function of temperature with focus on magneto-crystalline and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was not induced in the SPE YIG films annealed at low temperature by relaxing residual stress through formation of dislocation. On the contrary the films annealed at high temperature showed perpendicular magnetic anisotropy which shows very low density of dislocation. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy field decreased linearly up to a high temperature of $230^{\circ}C$ above which magneto-crystalline anisotropy disappeared. Coercivity also decreased linearly with temperature up 세 $230^{\circ}C$. Magneto-crystalline anisotropy of perpendicular anisotropy induced epitaxial (111) YIG films can be measured using $H_k=4K_1/3M_s$. Temperature behavior of initial susceptibility can be successfully explained by Hopkinson effects. Curie temperature of YIG films grown on GGG substrate with high paramagnetic susceptibility can be easily measured using the results.

  • We have investigated the quasi-two-dimensional magnetism for the layered transition metal compound (C/sub n/H/sub 2n+1/NH/sub 3/)/sub 2/CuCl/sub 4/ (n=10, 14) in the high temperature regions by means of EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) and SQUID measurements. As a result, the magnetic transitions were reflected in the EPR linewidths and the magnetic suceptibilities in a sensitive manner. Fluctuations of the magnetic susceptibility and a similar variation of the .DELTA. g =(g/sub .parallel. -/g/sub .perp. /)g/sub .parallel. / value were also observed around the structural phase transition temperatures.
