  • In contemporary architectural discourse, the concept of space is ubiquitous, yet its historical genesis and theoretical underpinnings in Gottfried Semper's seminal theoretical work remain under explored. This study investigates the reception and integration of Semper's architectural theory into modern discourse, tracing its trajectory from August Schmarsow, to Nikolaus Pevsner, to Sigfried Giedion. While Semper's "cladding theory" had initially been understood in terms of both its relation to physical properties and structural and functional values, leading to an expansion of cladding as a new genre of art, i.e. arts and crafts, Semper's "architectural theory" instead explained cladding theory in terms of space. In disseminating Semper's theoretical work, Schmarsow was especially important as he himself played an increasingly prominent role in expanding the boundaries of modernist architectural theory and practice from the beginning of the 20th century on.

  • Since Modern period which is characterized by the governing of technology and capitalism, the production and aesthetics of building became a main issue of architectural discourse. Morever, Modern architecture tends to be a kind of media in which the visual image of building plays a far more important role than building itself. Institutionalized discipline of Architecture in modern system set aside the dwelling aspect of building and destructed close relationship between dwelling and building. This study analyzes the essential meaning of dwelling with a viewpoint of building and vise virsa in order to have a deep reflection on contemporary architecture and modern crisis of dwelling. For this purpose this study first reviewed linguistic and mythical narratives on the origin of dwelling and building. Secondly, reviewed the thought of Heidegger on dwelling and building and his thinking on authenticity of dwelling. Thirdly, reviewed drastic change of idea and reality of dwelling recent days, especially from settlement to nomad. Lastly reviewed E. Levinas' thinking on bodily dwelling or primordial mode of dwelling before poetic dwelling of Heidegger. With these review we can figure out following things on dwelling and building. Physical building or its visual image can not take the place of dwelling in itself. Dwelling and Building happens simultaneously and understood as an event in life world. Today's alienation of dwelling from building reduced our conception of architecture to a physical setting and mere technique. Building must be a ontological and cultural phenomenon beyond physical building. Nomad in this age of information and globalization may be a new mode of dwelling. But it can not exclude traditional way of dwelling on concrete space, because human being as a physical being can not abandon dwelling place that gives a primordial comfort with and within our body.

  • This study attempted to clarify the modern transition process of the urban space through the construction and change of the Imperial Palace as a central facility in Seoul. The road renovation of Seoul, which started in 1895, has established a modern, circular transportation system centered on Gyeongun-gung Palace, the Imperial Palace along with the tram line. In this urban structure, the imperial palace as a central facility of the former monarchy, unlike the previous palaces, could not be located at the top of a road with a longitudinal axis, and it expanded its territory around foreign legionaries and placed a new government office around the perimeter. However, the royal palace was moved to Changdeokgung Palace in 1907 with the throne of Sunjong. With the creation of Changdeokgung, which is the periphery of Seoul, as new royal palace, the status of the imperial palace in the city was remarkably weakened, and Gyeongun-gung, located in the center of Seoul, was also reduced to the current Deoksugung area, turning into an urban facility facing a modern street.

This study provided a new direction in the modernization work of traditional costumes by creating fashion images newly interpreted corresponding to a modern sense and trend through the application of formative characteristics and noticeable elements via the coordination of traditional Baeja and modern costumes. On the one hand, it would be meaningful in terms of contributing to the activation of traditional Hanbok by providing people with ample opportunities to wear it in modern daily lives variously. On the other hand, the actual purpose of this study was to perform a modernization work for traditional costumes by attempting to conduct a crossover that could let people move into other areas freely, that is, a creative and innovative research associating the area of costume history and that of coordination.

  • The reality which cannot protect existing tangible intangible modern cultural heritage in Daejeon is makes historical value and identity of a city weakened and then, this leads to absence of the foundation of urban regeneration based on the history. References as recording inheritance indicates characteristics or identity of the area and they represent the physical mental symbol of the area; images of diverse structures or sceneries with historical or cultural characteristics are contents of urban regeneration based on history and culture, which can be utilized as historical sources to verify realness of disappearing modern cultural heritage. Therefore, understanding and utilization of modern cultural heritage through this study on regional archiving can be deemed to be the first stage to bring community spirit, affection and pride to local residents. In this connection, this study intends to suggest a policy direction not only to maintain realness of modern cultural heritage through preservation and utilization but also to expect formation of settling and fellowship as well as cultural economical effect from the viewpoint of urban regeneration.
