  • We examined the effect of substituting squid meal and macroalgae with soybean meal in a commercial diet on the growth and body composition of juvenile abalone Haliotis discus hannai. We randomly distributed 2310 juvenile abalone into 33 rectangular plastic containers and fed them five experimental diets in triplicate as follows. The control diet (Con) consisted of 12% squid meal, 8% corn gluten and 20% soybean meal as protein source, wherein 10% ${\alpha}$-starch, 20% wheat flour, and 5% dextrin were carbohydrate source. The experimental diets, 50% squid meal (SM50), 50% squid meal and 50% macroalgae (SM50+MA50), and 100% squid meal and 50% macroalgae (SM100+MA50) were substituted with the same respective amounts of soybean meal. The fifth experimental diet consisted of the control diet plus 1% diatom powder (DP). We prepared two domestic (Domestic A and B) and two imported (China and Japan) abalone feeds. Finally, we prepared Undaria and sea tangle. We found that the weight gain of abalone fed the Con, DP, and China and Japan diets was significantly greater than that of abalone fed Undaria and sea tangle. We conclude that the substituting squid meal and macroalgae with soybean meal in abalone feed has limited benefits, but supplementing diets with 1% diatom powder is effective in improving weight gain.

  • To evaluate the effective use of endoprotease from squid viscera as a food processing aid, various methods of fractionating endoprotease from viscera of the Argentina shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) were evaluated. The endoprotease-positive fractions of each fractionation were fraction II (30-40%, w/w) with cold acetone, fraction IV (50-60% saturation) with ammonium sulfate, fraction UF with anion exchange chromatography, and fraction II (15-24 kDa) with gel filtration. The specific activities (approximately 25 U/mg) of the fractions using ammonium sulfate and gel filtration were higher than the others. Total azocaseinolytic activity and recovery of the positive fraction using gel filtration were 806.95U and 37.82%, respectively, and were the highest among the positive fractions. Based on the results, gel filtration was the most efficient method for fractionating endoprotease from the viscera of Illex argentinus.

  • Step-edge Josephson junctions (SEJ) have been fabricated on sapphire substrates with in situ deposited films of CeO$_2$ buffer layer and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ films on the low angle steps. Direct coupled SQUID magnetometers with the SEJ were formed on 1 cm X 1 cm R-plane sapphire substrates. Typical 5-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-wide Josephson junctions have R$_{N}$ of 3 Ω and I$_{c}$ of 50 $mutextrm{A}$ at 77 K. The direct coupled SQUID magnetometers were designed to have pickup coils of 50-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-wide 16 parallel loops on the 1 cm X 1 cm substrates with outer dimension of 8.8 mm X 8.8 mm. The SEJ SQUID magnetometers exhibit relatively low 1/f noise even with dc bias control, and could be stably controlled by flux-locked loops in the magnetically disturbed environment. Field noise of the do SQUID was measured to be 200∼300 fT/Hz$^{1}$2/in the white noise region and about 2 pT/Hz$^{1}$2/ at 1 Hz when measured with dc bias method.hod.d.

  • We have developed a YBCO SQUID gradiometer system for the measurement of a very weak magnetic field in an unshielded environment. The system consists of a SQUID gradiometer sensor, low noise pre-amp, and FLL(fluxlocked loop) control electronics. The gradiometer sensors have been fabricated on STO bicrystal substrates, and exhibit a magnetic noise of 300 fT/${\surd}$ Hz/cm at 100 Hz. The overall magnetic field noise of the SQUID gradiometer system was about 10 pT/${\surd}$ Hz/cm at 10 Hz without any magnetic shield. The system demonstrated a high stability for a long time, and real-time measurement resolution ${\le}$ 100 pT/cm in the unshielded environments.

  • A visceral helminth of the squid, Todarodes pacificus, is reported from the East Sea, the Republic of Korea. Total 39 squid samples were purchased from a fish market in Jumunjin-eup, Gangneung-si (City) from August 2014 to July 2015 and were examined for helminth parasites with naked eyes and under a stereomicroscope after opening the abdominal cavity with a pair of scissors. Whitish larval worms were mainly found in the stomach and abdominal cavity of the squid. They were detected in 25 (64.1%) out of 39 squids examined, and the infection density was 7 larvae per infected squid. Spatula-shaped larvae were $8.2{\times}2.0mm$ in average size, round to slightly flattened anteriorly, with round hatching posteriorly, and had characteristic 4 tentacles with numerous hooklets in the scolex. The larvae were identified as the plerocercoid stage of Nybelinia surmenicola by their morphological features. This finding represents a new host record and the first report of N. surmenicola infection in T. pacificus squids from the east coast of Korea.

  • We have designed and fabricated the YBCO single layer directly-coupled SQUID magnetometers for the purpose of magnetocardiography in a magnetically disturbed environment. The SQUID magnetometers were designed three different types of pickup coil such as solid type, PL type I and PL type II for further stable fluxed-locked-loop operation without magnetic shielding. Magnetometer was fabricated with a single layer YBCO thin film deposited on STO(100) bicrystal substrate with misorientation angle of $30^{\circ}$. We have achieved a magnetic field noise BN of 30 fT/$Hz^{1/2}$ at 100 Hz, and less than 70 fT/$Hz^{1/2}$ at 1 Hz. The PL type II SQUIDs have exhibited the most stable fluxed-locked-loop operation in a magnetically unshielded environment.

  • We have constructed a multi-channel SQUID magnetometer system for localization and classification of magnetic targets. Ten SQUID magnetometers were arranged to measure 5 independent components of 3 $\times$ 3 magnetic field gradient tensor. To get gradient from the difference of magnetic field measurements, we carefully balanced magnetometers. SQUIDs with slotted washer were used for operation in an unshielded laboratory environment, and noise characteristic in the laboratory was measured. With the multi-channel SQUID magnetometer system, we have successfully traced the motion of a bar magnet moving around it at a distance of about 1 m. In the urban environment, the drift of uniform magnetic field due to the irregular motion of a large magnetic body at distance and earth field causes an error in the position calculation, and this results in the distortion of the calculated trajectory. In this paper, we present the architecture and the performance of the system.

  • The aim of this study was to collect fundamental data of taurine contained in the waste water from squid processing. The concentration of taurine and free amino acid was measured during each steps of squid processing as well as from waste of skinned and cooked squid, respectively. As a result, proline concentration reached to $800{\~}997\;mg/100\;g$ and taurine concentration reached to $730{\~}820 mg/100 g$. Comparing with raw squid, $60{\%}$ loss of free amino acid and Bleat reduction of taurine was detected in cooked squid. The concentration of free amino acid in waste water from skinned and cooked squid was $639.1 mg/100 ml, 470.7 mg/100 ml$, respectively. Among those free amino acids, taurine composed of $144.9 mg/100 ml and 117.3 mg/100 ml$ in-waste water from skinned and cooked squid, respectively, and these values were about $30{\%}$ of total free amino acids. Other major amino acids were isoleucine, alanine, fosine, leucine, glycine and. glutamate.

  • We designed and constructed a non-destructive evaluation system using an HTS DC SQUID electronic gradiometer. Our DC SQUID electronic gradiometer is composed of two DC SQUID magnetometers. The system included a non-magnetic stainless steel cryostat and a set of coaxial exciting coils, which were used to induce an eddy current in the test material. We also have calculated the eddy current density produced by an exciting coil in any direction of the testing object. We could compute the eddy current density distribution in 3D. The SQUIDs were computer controlled and the output data from the electronic gradiometer was obtained by using a Labview software.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of gamma irradiation on the shelf-life extension of semi-dried squid (Todarodes pacificus). Semi-dried squid was stored at 10$^{\circ}C$ after gamma irradiation with doses of 0, 3, 5 and 7 kGy. In microbiological aspects, non-irradiated semi-dried squid was rapidly deteriorated during storage, and molds and yeasts were detected in a selective medium. The total viable cells were reduced with the increase of irradiation dose, and a dose level of 7 kGy was considered optimum and effective dose for the preservation of semi-dried squid. Increase in the content of volatile basic nitrogen was reduced by irradiation treatment depending upon doses. Thiobarbituric acid values were not significantly different in all samples regardless of irradiation. Sensory qualities of irradiated semi-dried squid were acceptable.
