Cognitive networks (CNs) are capable of enabling dynamic spectrum allocation, and thus constitute a promising technology for future wireless communication. Whereas, the implementation of CN will lead to the requirement of an increased energy-arrival rate, which is a significant parameter in energy harvesting design of a cognitive user (CU) device. A well-designed spectrum-sensing scheme will lower the energy-arrival rate that is required and enable CNs to self-sustain, which will also help alleviate global warming. In this paper, spectrum sensing in a multi-user cognitive ad hoc network with a wide-band spectrum is considered. Based on the prospective spectrum sensing, we classify CN operation into two modes: Distributed and centralized. In a distributed network, each CU conducts spectrum sensing for its own data transmission, while in a centralized network, there is only one cognitive cluster header which performs spectrum sensing and broadcasts its sensing results to other CUs. Thus, a wide-band spectrum that is divided into multiple sub-channels can be sensed simultaneously in a distributed manner or sequentially in a centralized manner. We consider the energy consumption for spectrum sensing only of an analog-to-digital convertor (ADC). By formulating energy consumption for spectrum sensing in terms of the sub-channel sampling rate and whole-band sensing time, the sampling rate and whole-band sensing time that are optimal for minimizing the total energy consumption within sensing reliability constraints are obtained. A power dissipation model of an ADC, which plays an important role in formulating the energy efficiency problem, is presented. Using AD9051 as an ADC example, our numerical results show that the optimal sensing parameters will achieve a reduction in the energy-arrival rate of up to 97.7% and 50% in a distributed and a centralized network, respectively, when comparing the optimal and worst-case energy consumption for given system settings.

The selection of an evaluation response spectrum can have a significant effect on the seismic fragility evaluation of a structure. A method for modifying the seismic fragility parameters that are calculated based on the design spectrum is described in this study. The modification factor is used to modify the original fragility parameters. The HCLPF (High Confidence of Low Probability of Failure) acceleration levels of the electric system using previous design spectrum and uniform hazard spectrum (UHS) were compared. Finally, seismic risk analyses were performed according to a uniform hazard spectrum. From the results, it was concluded that based on the design spectrum, seismic risk for the electric system might be underestimated.

Spectrum sensing is an integral part of cognitive radio, which seeks to address the perceived spectrum scarcity that is caused by inefficient utilization of the available spectrum. In this paper, a spectrum sensing system using energy detection for analog TV and FM broadcast transmitters as well as modified Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting Terrestrial (ISDB-T) signals is implemented on a software-defined radio platform using GNU' Not Unix (GNU) radio and the N200 Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). Real-time implementation and experimental tests were conducted in Metro Cebu, a highly urbanized area in the southern part of the Philippines. Extensive tests and measurements were necessary to determine spectrum availability, particularly in the TV band. This is in support of the Philippine government' efforts to provide internet connectivity to rural areas. Experimental results have so far met IEEE 802.22 requirements for energy detection spectrum sensing. The designed system detected signals at -114 dBm within a sensing time of 100 ms. Furthermore, the required $P_d({\geq}90)$ and $P_{fa}({\leq}10)$ of the standard were also achieved with different thresholds for various signal sources representing primary users.

Cognitive Radio has attracted intensive interests of the researchers, recently. The data rate always increases in the emerging technologies. The increased data rate poses mainly two challenges for spectrum sensing. One is that the state of primary user (PU) is fast and alternatively varying between "on/off" in a spectrum sensing window. The other is that the asynchronicity among the reports in a cooperative spectrum sensing setting becomes more apparent. Both of them would deteriorate the spectrum sensing performance. Thus, we propose an asynchronous cooperative spectrum sensing method to cope with these two challenges. A likelihood ratio test based spectrum sensing is developed for a single cooperator. The likelihood ratio is obtained in the setting of fast varying PU state. The likelihood ratio test is uniformly powerful according to the Neyman-pearson lemma. Furthermore, the asynchronicity among the cooperators are studied. Two sets of fusion weights are discussed for the asynchronous time among cooperators. One is designed based on the condition probability of the PU state variation and the other one is designed based on the queueing theory. The simulation results are provided with different fusion methods. The performance improvements are demonstrated.
In this paper, a method of vegetation spectrum measurement using multi spectrum camera was studied. Each pixel in taken images using multi spectrum camera have spectrum data, the relationship between spectrum data and distribution, structure, etc. are directly turned out. In other words, detailed spectrum data information of object including spatial distribution can be obtained from those images. However, the camera has some problems for applying field measurement and data analysis. In this study, those problems are solved.
Tracking and exploiting instantaneous spectrum opportunities are fundamental challenges in opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) in presence of the bursty traffic of primary users and the limited spectrum sensing capability of secondary users. In order to take advantage of the history of spectrum sensing and access decisions, a sequential decision framework is widely used to design optimal policies. However, many existing schemes, based on a partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP) framework, reveal that optimal policies are non-stationary in nature which renders them difficult to calculate and implement. Therefore, this work pursues stationary OSA policies, which are thereby efficient yet low-complexity, while still incorporating many practical factors, such as spectrum sensing errors and a priori unknown statistical spectrum knowledge. First, with an approximation on channel evolution, OSA is formulated in a multi-armed bandit (MAB) framework. As a result, the optimal policy is specified by the wellknown Gittins index rule, where the channel with the largest Gittins index is always selected. Then, closed-form formulas are derived for the Gittins indices with tunable approximation, and the design of a reinforcement learning algorithm is presented for calculating the Gittins indices, depending on whether the Markovian channel parameters are available a priori or not. Finally, the superiority of the scheme is presented via extensive experiments compared to other existing schemes in terms of the quality of policies and optimality.

Recently, a spectrum sensing technique employing the maximum value of a received power spectrum as a test statistic has been presented in the literature for the purpose of detecting a wireless microphone signal in TV bands This detects the presence of a primary user by comparing the test statistic with some threshold, which depends on the background noise power level as well as a target false alarm rate. Therefore its performance may deteriorate when the noise power uncertainty occurs. As a means to mitigate this difficulty, we present a spectrum sensing strategy adopting the ratio of the maximum and the minimum value of the power spectrum as a test statistic and analyze its performance of spectrum sensing.

Demand of spectrum resource is tremendously increasing and this trend will continue as more IT services such as cloud computing, smart devices, Internet of Things are provided through wireless network. Recent development of spectrum sharing technology has drawn attention to spectrum policy makers as a promising way to overcome the expected spectrum shortage problem. However, technology-based solution to spectrum shortage problem may not be sustainable since the solution affect only one aspect of spectrum sharing ecosystem. To understand the whole picture of spectrum shortage problem, policies to vitalize spectrum sharing ecosystem were proposed based on the analysis of System Dynamics causal map in the previous study. This study compares and analyzes the effect of those proposed vitalization policies by using System Dynamics simulation. Among seven alternative policies, combined application of demand acceleration policy and technology development policy was found to be more effective for better utilization of spectrum. The effect of demand acceleration policy was offset when other policies are applied together except supply acceleration policy which shows better spectrum sharing.
Measuring spectral reflectance can be regarded as obtaining inherent color parameters, and spectral reflectance has been used in image processing. Model-based spectrum recovering, one of the method for obtaining spectral reflectance, uses ordinary camera with multiple illuminations. Conventional model-based methods allow to recover spectral reflectance efficiently by using only a few parameters, however it requires some parameters such as power spectrum of illuminations and spectrum sensitivity of camera. In this paper, we propose an enhanced model-based spectrum recovering method without pre-measured parameters: power spectrum of illuminations and spectrum sensitivity of camera. Instead of measuring each parameters, spectral reflectance can be efficiently recovered by estimating and using the spectrum characteristic matrix which contains spectrum parameters: basis function, power spectrum of illumination, and spectrum sensitivity of camera. The spectrum characteristic matrix can be easily estimated using captured images from scenes with color checker under multiple illuminations. Additionally, we suggest fast recovering method preserving positive constraint of spectrum by nonnegative basis function of spectral reflectance. Results of our method showed accurately reconstructed spectral reflectance and fast constrained estimation with unmeasured camera and illumination. As our method could be conducted conveniently, measuring spectral reflectance is expected to be widely used.

With the rapid development of wireless communication, the confliction between the scarce frequency resources and the low spectral efficiency caused by the stationary spectrum sharing strategies seriously restricts the evolution of the future mobile communication. For this purpose, cognitive radio (CR) emerges as one of the most promising inventions which can overcome the spectrum shortage. As the key technology and main objective of CR, spectrum sharing can make full use of the limited spectrum, alleviate the scarcity of frequency resources and improve the system utilities, playing thereby an important role in improving the system performance of cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In this survey, the spectrum sharing in CRNs is discussed in terms of the sharing process, mainstream sharing technologies and spectrum sharing models. In particular, comparisons of different spectrum sharing strategies are concluded, as well as that of different spectrum sensing schemes in sharing procedure. Moreover, some application examples of the spectrum sharing in CRNs, such as smart grid, public safety, cellular network and medical body area networks are also introduced. In addition, our previous related works are presented and the open research issues in the field of spectrum sharing are stated as well.
