VRML as a Modeling Language for 3D Visual Interactive Simulation (3차원 대화형 시뮬레이션 모델기술언어로서의 VRML)

  • VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is an Web-based standard for modeling 3D spaces and provides applications with 3D interactive interfaces. With its recent upgrade, it supports events, routes, scripts, and other behavior modeling constructs. This paper approaches VRML as a simulation modeling language. This approach promotes the sharing and distribution of simulation results and demonstration among distributed users as well as efficient modeling of systems through the direct mapping of 3D objects and behaviors. This paper analyzes the behavior modeling constructs of VRML, presents effective modeling alternatives through the modeling of a simple material processing system, and discusses the upgrade direction of VRML as a foundation for distributed interactive simulation system.

Secondary Teachers' Perspectives on Mathematical Modeling and Modeling Mathematics: Discovery, Appreciation, and Conflict

  • Recent international reform movements call for attention on modeling in mathematics classrooms. However, definitions and enactment principles are unclear in policy documents. In this case study, we investigated United States high-school mathematics teachers' experiences in a professional development program focused on modeling and its enactment in schools. Our findings share teachers' experiences around their discovery of different conceptualizations, appreciations, and conflicts as they envisioned incorporating modeling into classrooms. These experiences show how professional development can be designed to engage teachers with forms of modeling, and that those experiences can inspire them to consider modeling as an imperative feature of a mathematics program.

TMUML: A Singular TM Model with UML Use Cases and Classes

  • In the systems and software modeling field, a conceptual model involves modeling with concepts to support development and design. An example of a conceptual model is a description developed using the Unified Modeling Language (UML). UML uses a model multiplicity formulation approach, wherein a number of models are used to represent alternative views. By contrast, a model singularity approach uses only a single integrated model. Each of these styles of modeling has its strengths and weaknesses. This paper introduces a partial solution to the issue of multiplicity vs. singularity in modeling by adopting UML use cases and class models into the conceptual thinging machine (TM) model. To apply use cases, we adopt the observation that a use-case diagram is a description that shows the internal structure of the part of the system represented by the use case in addition to being useful to people outside of the system. Additionally, the UML class diagram is recast in TM representation. Accordingly, we develop a TMUML model that embraces the TM specification of the UML class diagram and the internal structure extracted from the UML use case. TMUML modeling introduces some of the advantages that have made UML a popular modeling language to TM modeling. At the same time, this approach supplies UML with partial model singularity. The paper details experimentation with TMUML using examples from the literature. Our results indicate that mixing UML with other models could be a viable approach.

  • Purpose: This review aims at introducing 3 modeling approaches classified into 3 categories based on the purpose (estimation or prediction), structure (linear or non-linear) and phase (steady-state or dynamic-state); 1) statistical approaches, 2) kinetic modeling and 3) mechanistic modeling. We hope that this review can be a useful guide in the model-based approach of calcium metabolism as well as illustrates an application of engineering tools in studying biosystems. Background: The meaning of biosystems has been expanded, including agricultural/food system as well as biological systems like genes, cells and metabolisms. This expansion has required a useful tool for assessing the biosystems and modeling has arisen as a method that satisfies the current inquiry. To suit for the flow of the era, examining the system which is a little bit far from the traditional biosystems may be interesting issue, which can enlarge our insights and provide new ideas for prospective biosystem-researches. Herein, calcium metabolic models reviewed as an example of application of modeling approaches into the biosystems. Review: Calcium is an essential nutrient widely involved in animal and human metabolism including bone mineralization and signaling pathways. For this reason, the calcium metabolic system has been studied in various research fields of academia and industries. To study calcium metabolism, model-based system analyses have been utilized according to the purpose, subject characteristics, metabolic sites of interest, and experimental design. Either individual metabolic pathways or a whole homeostasis has been modeled in a number of studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of the mathematical modeling tasks and lesson designs developed by pre-service teachers based on the inherent awareness of mathematical modeling, considering the importance of creating a task to perform mathematical modeling activity and designing a lesson. As a result, the mathematical modeling tasks developed by pre-service teachers mainly presents an appropriate amount of information using real life contexts for the purpose of learning using concepts, and it showed a tendency to develop to the level of cognitive demand that required procedures with connections to understanding, meaning, or concepts. And most of the developed modeling task-based lessons showed a tendency to design warm-up activity, model-eliciting activity, and model-exploration activity. This result is due to the lack of experience of pre-service teachers in creating mathematical modeling tasks. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously provide opportunities for pre-service teachers to learn concepts or create mathematical modeling tasks intended for exploration according to various mathematical contents, thereby actively cultivating their ability to create modeling tasks in the course of training pre-service teachers. Furthermore, it is necessary to strengthen the expertise in mathematical modeling teaching and learning by providing opportunities to actually perform the mathematical modeling-based classes designed by pre-service teachers and to experience the process of reflecting on the lessons.

  • Information systems development entails planning, analysis, design and construction phases. The analysis phase identifying user requirements is the most important of these phases. Since unidentified defects in the early phase causes increased work and costs as development proceeds, the quality of analysis results affects the quality of the resultant system. Major tasks in the analysis phase are data modeling and process modeling. Research on building a knowledge-based system for data modeling have been conducted much, however, not sufficiently for process modeling. As a system environment with high user interaction increases, research on process modeling methods and knowledge- based systems considering such environment are required. In this research, a process modeling framework for information systems with high user interaction is suggested and a knowledge-based system for supporting the suggested framework is implemented. A proposed model consists of the following tasks: event analysis, process analysis, and event/process interaction analysis. Event analysis identifies business events and their responses. Process analysis break down the processes of an enterprise into progressively increasing details. Decomposition begins at the function level and ends when the elementary process level is reached. Event/process interaction analysis verifies the results of process analysis and event analysis. A knowledge-based system for supporting a proposed process modeling framework is implemented in a web-based environment.

UML Modeling to TM Modeling and Back

  • Certainly, the success of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) as the de facto standard for modeling software systems does not imply closing the door on scientific exploration or experimentation with modeling in the field. Continuing studies in this area can produce theoretical results that strengthen UML as the leading modeling language. Recently, a new modeling technique has been proposed called thinging machine (TM) modeling. This paper utilizes TM to further understand UML, with two objectives: (a) Fine issues in UML are studied, including theoretical notions such as events, objects, actions, activities, etc. Specifically, TM can be used to solve problems related to internal cross-diagram integration. (b) TM applies a different method of conceptualization, including building a model on one-category ontology in contrast to the object-oriented paradigm. The long-term objective of this study is to explore the possibility of TM complementing certain aspects in the UML methodology to develop and design software systems. Accordingly, we alternate between UML and TM modeling. A sample UML model is redesigned in TM, and then UML diagrams are extracted from TM. The results clarify many notions in both models. Particularly, the TM behavioral specification seems to be applicable in UML.

  • For the past decades, advances in computational devices have propelled mathematical modeling to become an effective tool for solving the black box of complex biological systems because of its prominent analytical power and comprehensive insight. Nevertheless, modeling is still limitedly used in the fields of agriculture and food which generally concentrate on producing experimental data rather than processing them. This study, hence, intends to introduce modeling in terms of its procedure types of structure, formulation, analyses, and software, with reviews of current notable studies from micro to macro scales so as to propose the modeling technique as a novel approach in discerning conundrums in agriculture and food systems. We expect this review to provide an eligible source for researchers who are willing to apply modeling techniques into the unexplored fields related to bio-systems that comprehensively include biology, nutrition, agriculture, food, animal science, and ecology.

  • Entity-relationship modeling for designing relational database is a very complicated thinking process that requires extensive knowledge and experiences. It is very likely that designers make mistakes in this process. In order to minimize the mistakes, a systematic method to guide the thinking process is needed. In this research, an entity-relationship modeling system is developed, which resolves the whole process of information modeling, data modeling, and functional dependency relationship analysis into small and simple decision-making steps. Therefore, it can reduce the possibility of making decision errors and improve the efficiency of the modeling process. It's functionality and efficiency is verified through some modeling examples. It is expected that the modeling system can be commercialized, if some functions are added, such as detection, warning, and correction of decision errors, and educational help.
