  • The object oriented co-modeling methodology, previously introduced, employs a layered approach in war game models development in which an upper layer models abstract behavior of an object and a lower one models details of the object. Within the methodology military domain experts and simulation experts models an object at the upper and the lower layers, respectively in concurrent manner. This paper proposes a method of constructing a war game simulator using parametric behavior modeling technique, which provides a means for military domain experts/users to change model's detailed behavior with no knowledge on modeling semantics. The proposed simulator would support new algorithms or strategies with minimal cost and could be modified even by the users who are ignorant about modeling technique. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, a naval war game simulator is exemplified.

  • Recently, demands on the tapping machine are increased due to the case of a cell phone is changed to metal such as aluminum. The automatic tool changer (ATC) is one of the most important devices for the tapping machine related to the speed and energy consumption of the machine. To reduce the consumed energy and vibration, the dynamic modeling is essential for the ATC. In this paper, inverse dynamic modeling of a novel ATC mechanism is introduced. The proposed ATC mechanism is composed of a double four-bar mechanism with a circular tablet to generate continuous rotation of the tablet. The dynamic modeling is performed based on the Lagrange equation with a modeling for the contact between the four-bar and the tablet. Simulation results for various working conditions are proposed and analyzed for the prototype design. The dynamic modeling can be applied to determine the proper actuator and to reduce the vibration and consumed energy for the ATC machine.

  • In this study, modeling pedagogies were employed to re-design and teach the unit of Seasonal Changes in the $6^{th}$ grade science curriculum. The effects of the modeling-based program were investigated in both the conceptual and affective domains using an approach of mixing quantitative and qualitative techniques. The result showed that the students in the modeling-based science inquiry classroom gained a higher mean score in a conceptual achievement test than their counterparts in a traditional science classroom. The number of the conceptual resources activated to explain the causes of the seasons, as well as the types of student explanations developed through the combination of the resources activated, were greater in the modeling-based classroom. The modeling-based science inquiry was also effective in improving student attitudes toward science lessons. It was revealed, however, that the students experienced both positive and negative epistemic feelings during the modeling-based science inquiry. Implications of these findings for science education and relevant research were suggested and discussed.

  • Recently many efforts have been made to improve the efficiency of design and production of the structures using the automation system. But, this work has been progressed as independent or partial system. And, the study on the integrated system is not sufficient in application for practical problems yet. This paper deals with the fundamental concept of modeling system and application method on structural modeling. At first, the core of the integrated system is a shape modeling system that can represent the geometric and topological information. This system must be designed as an open system to be combined with each independent automation system. The appropriate concept to realize this system on structural modeling is object oriented modeling and this enables to integrate each automation system successfully, This concept was applied to automatic mesh generation. For shape modeling system, half-edge data structure that is being used in solid modeling was modified to handle the plate structure in the plane. And, to generate the triangular meshes, direct node connection method was used. And, as a result, the integrated system that generate the meshes of two dimensional structure automatically was realized. And, programmed by C++, these systems can be combined with other systems easily and have good reusability.

  • Nowadays, automated modeling system for steel margin based on interactive user interface has been developed and applied to the production design stage. The system could increase design efficiency and minimize human error owing to recent CAD technique. However, there has been no approach to the pre-nesting design stage at all in early modeling process especially where ship model should be handled at more than two design stages using AVEVA Marine. A designer of the design stage needs artificial intelligence system beyond modeling automation when 3D model must be prepared in early modeling process using AVEVA Marine because they have focused on 2D nesting traditionally. In addition, they have a hard time figuring out the model prepared in previous design stage and modifying the model for steel purchase size in early modeling process. In this paper, artificial intelligence modeling system for automated application of steel margin in early modeling process using AVEVA Marine is developed in order to apply to the pre-nesting design stage that can detect effective segments before a calculation to find if a segment locates near block butt boundaries by filtering noise segments among lines, curves and surface intersections based on IT big data analysis.

  • We introduced an approach of modeling of a sound absorbing medium that had different absorbing coefficient according to frequency. To obtain the time domain result of the frequency characteristics of a sound absorbing medium, transmission line matrix modeling was used. To input sound absorbing effect in TLM modeling, we added a FIR filter at a node instead of absorbing component using resistance component. There were simulated the characteristics of time-shift, low pass filter, high pass filter using the FIR filter with 7-tap coefficients, then compared with theoretical results. From various simulation results, we could find that added FIR filter coefficient in TLM modeling was an useful way to model a sound absorbing medium.

  • In recent years, several computer-aided pattern recognition and data mining techniques have been developed for modeling of soil behavior. The main idea behind a pattern recognition system is that it learns adaptively from experience and is able to provide predictions for new cases. Artificial neural networks are the most widely used pattern recognition methods that have been utilized to model soil behavior. Recently, the authors have pioneered the application of genetic programming (GP) and evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR) techniques for modeling of soils and a number of other geotechnical applications. The paper reviews applications of pattern recognition and data mining systems in geotechnical engineering with particular reference to constitutive modeling of soils. It covers applications of artificial neural network, genetic programming and evolutionary programming approaches for soil modeling. It is suggested that these systems could be developed as efficient tools for modeling of soils and analysis of geotechnical engineering problems, especially for cases where the behavior is too complex and conventional models are unable to effectively describe various aspects of the behavior. It is also recognized that these techniques are complementary to conventional soil models rather than a substitute to them.

  • The interdisciplinary research area of small scale energy harvesting has attracted tremendous interests in the past decades, with a goal of ultimately realizing self-powered electronic systems. Among the various available ambient energy sources which can be converted into electricity, wind energy is a most promising and ubiquitous source in both outdoor and indoor environments. Significant research outcomes have been produced on small scale wind energy harvesting in the literature, mostly based on piezoelectric conversion. Especially, modeling methods of wind energy harvesting techniques plays a greatly important role in accurate performance evaluations as well as efficient parameter optimizations. The purpose of this paper is to present a guideline on the modeling methods of small-scale wind energy harvesters. The mechanisms and characteristics of different types of aeroelastic instabilities are presented first, including the vortex-induced vibration, galloping, flutter, wake galloping and turbulence-induced vibration. Next, the modeling methods are reviewed in detail, which are classified into three categories: the mathematical modeling method, the equivalent circuit modeling method, and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. This paper aims to provide useful guidance to researchers from various disciplines when they want to develop and model a multi-way coupled wind piezoelectric energy harvester.

  • Most of companies related to the area of B2B electronic commerce are making their efforts to innovate their existing business process into new designed process. XML-based electronic data interchange has potential to impact on reshaping the traditional EDI systems. This study intends to suggest a prototype of XML-based electronic data interchange using unified modeling language, with a case study applied in Korean automobile industry. In order to accomplish the research objectives, we employed UML as its standard modeling language, In this study, four diagramming techniques such as use case diagram, sequence diagram, class diagram, component diagram among eight modeling techniques are used for analyzing hierarchical business process. As a result of applying UML methodology, we design and develop XML/EDI applications efficiently. Our field test applied to Korean automobile industry shows that data modeling to design XML application using UML is better than existing methodologies in representing object schema of XML data and in extension and interoperability of systems.
