Prediction of successful caudal epidural injection using color Doppler ultrasonography in the paramedian sagittal oblique view of the lumbosacral spine

  • Background: Ultrasound-guided caudal epidural injection (CEI) is limited in that it cannot confirm drug distribution at the target site without fluoroscopy. We hypothesized that visualization of solution flow through the inter-laminar space of the lumbosacral spine using color Doppler ultrasound alone would allow for confirmation of drug distribution. Therefore, we aimed to prospectively evaluate the usefulness of this method by comparing the color Doppler image in the paramedian sagittal oblique view of the lumbosacral spine (LS-PSOV) with the distribution of the contrast medium observed during fluoroscopy. Methods: Sixty-five patients received a 10-mL CEI of solution containing contrast medium under ultrasound guidance. During injection, flow was observed in the LSPSOV using color Doppler ultrasonography, following which it was confirmed using fluoroscopy. The presence of contrast image at L5-S1 on fluoroscopy was defined as "successful CEI." We then calculated prediction accuracy for successful CEI using color Doppler ultrasonography in the LS-PSOV. We also investigated the correlation between the distribution levels measured via color Doppler and fluoroscopy. Results: Prediction accuracy with color Doppler ultrasonography was 96.9%. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 96.7%, 100%, 100%, and 60.0%, respectively. In 52 of 65 patients (80%), the highest level at which contrast image was observed was the same for both color Doppler ultrasonography and fluoroscopy. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that color Doppler ultrasonography in the LS-PSOV is a new method for determining whether a drug solution reaches the lumbosacral region (i.e., the main target level) without the need for fluoroscopy.

  • This paper proposes a method to extract coronary arteries effectively in the angiography, In general. DSA(Digital Subtraction Angiography) is a well-established technique for the visualization of coronary arteries, DSA involves the subtraction of a mask image, an image of a heart before the injection of contrast medium, from a live image, However, this technique is sensitive to the movement of background and can cause wrong detection due to the variance of background intensity between two images. Therefore, this paper solves the structural problem resulted from background movement by selecting an image which has the least difference of movement through the similarity analysis of background texture, and it extracts only the blood vessels effectively through local intensity correction of the selected images, Experimental results show that the proposed method has the lower false-detection rate and higher accuracy rate than existing methods.

  • Our objective was to evaluate the clinical feasibility of spatial domain filtering as an alternative to additional image reconstruction using different kernels in CT. Kernels were grouped as H30 (head medium smooth), B30 (body medium smooth), S80 (special) and U95 (ultra sharp). Derived from thin coilimated source images, four sets of images were generated using phantom kernels. MTF (50%, 10%, 2%) measured with H30 (3.25, 5.68, 7.45 Ip/cm) B30 (3.84, 6.25, 7.72 Ip/cm), S80 (4.69, 9.49, 12.34 Ip/cm), and U95 (14.19, 20.31, 24.67 Ip/cm). Spatial resolution for the U95 kernel (0.6 mm) was 33.3% greater than that of the H30 and B30 (0.8 mm) kernels. Initially scanned kernels images were rated for subjective image qualify, using a five-point scale. Image scanned with a convolution kernel led to an increase in noise (U95), whereas the results for CT attenuation coefficient were comparable. CT images increase the diagnostic accuracy in head (H30), abdomen (B30), temporal bone and lung (U95) kernels may be controlled by adjusting CT various algorithms, which should be adjusted to take into account the kernels of the CT undergoing the examination.

LED Backlight Driving Circuits and Dimming Method

  • In this paper, light-emitting-diode (LED) backlight driving circuits and dimming method for medium-sized and large liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are proposed. The double loop control method, the intelligent-phase-shifted PWM dimming method, the fast-switching current regulator, and the current matching techniques are proposed to improve not only the current regulation characteristics and the power efficiency but also the current matching characteristics and the transient response of the LED current. The brightness of the backlight using the proposed local dimming method was determined from the histogram of the local block to reduce the power consumption of the backlight without image distortion. The measured maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for medium-sized LCDs was 90%, and the simulation results showed an 88% maximum power efficiency of the LED backlight driving circuit for large LCDs. The maximum backlight power-saving ratio of the proposed dimming method was 41.7% in the simulation with a high-contrast image. The experiment and simulation results showed that the performance of LEDs as LCD backlight units (BLUs) improved with the proposed circuits and method.

Evaluation of Roadmap Image Quality by Parameter Change in Angiography (혈관조영검사에서 매개변수 변화에 따른 Roadmap 영상의 화질평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify factors affecting picture quality in Roadmap images, which were studied by varying the dilution rate, collimation field and flow rate of contrast medium. For a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the picture, a 3mm vessel model Water Phantom was self-produced using acrylic, a roadmap image was acquired with a self-produced vascular model Water Phantom, and the SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) and CNR (Contrast to Noise Ratio) were analyzed. CM:N/S In the study on the change of dilution rate, CM:N/S dilution rate changed to (100%~10%:100%), and the measurement of the roadmap image taken using the vascular model Water Phantom showed that the measurement value of SNR gradually decreased as the N/S dilution rate was increased, and the measurement of CNR was gradually reduced. It was confirmed that the higher the dilution rate of CM:N/S, the lower the SNR and CNR, and also significant image can be obtained at the dilution rate of CM:N/S (100%~70:30%). The study showed the value of SNR and CNR in Roadmap image was increased as the Collimation Field was narrowed to the center of the vascular phantom; the Collimation Field was narrowed to the center of the vessel model by 2cm intervals to 0cm through 12cm. To verify the relationship with Roadmap image and Flow Rate, volume of the autoinjector was kept constant at 15 and the flow rate was gradually increased 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. The value of SNR and CNR of images taken by using water Phantom gradually decreased as the Flow Rate increased, but at Flow Rate 9 and 10, the SNR and CNR value was increase. It was not possible to confirm the relationship with SNR and CNR by ROI mean value and Background mean value. It is considered that further study is needed to evaluate the correlation about Roadmap image and Flow Rate. In conclusion, as the dilution rate of N/S in contrast medium was increased, the value of SNR and CNR was decreased. The narrower the Collimation Field, the higher image quality by increasing value of SNR and CNR. However, it is not confirmed the relationship Roadmap image and Flow Rate. It is considered that appropriate contrast medium concentration to minimize the effects of kidney and proper Collimation Field to improve contrast of image and reduce exposure X-ray during procedure is needed.

  • An important modelling requirement for multimedia systems is the representation of temporal constraints among several different media that ordinarily arise in multimedia application. The multimedia system which integrates various types of data is required to express voice, image, text and graphic data with simultaneousness or an arbitrary time intervals. The purpose of this study is to analyze the temporal reationships and synchronization among several different kinds of medium. Moreover, it proposes a Multimedia Display-Time Composition Model (MDTC Model) which guarantees a representation of any kind of temporal synchronization among more than two kinds of medium. The proposed model is applied to a company advertizing system. Finally, a multimedia authoring tool based on the MDTC Model is implemented.

  • In this paper, we present stereoscopic conversion based on movie shot information. To overcome the low stereoscopic quality of automatic stereo conversion technologies, the usage of the shot type is expected to provide more satisfactory stereoscopic perception. In general, movie clips are produced with a variety of shot techniques such as long shot, closeup shot, medium shot, etc. Each shot has its own characteristics that can be utilized during the conversion process. Furthermore, description sceme for shot and camera information is presented in XML. XML shot editor generates XML shot data. and conversion module parses such data and converts 2D image into stereoscopic image.

  • The photorefractive polymeric composite with good performance was prepared. The carbazole-substituted polysiloxane sensitized by 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone was used as a photoconducting medium and 1-[4-(2-nitrovinyl)phenyl]piperidine was added as an optically nonlinear chromophore. The photorefractive property of polymer was determined by diffraction efficiency using a 100 ㎛-thick film. The maximum diffraction efficiency ( ηmax) of 71% was obtained at the electric field of 70 V/ ㎛. The potential of the current polymer material as a holographic recording medium was evaluated by the demonstration of holographic recording and subsequent reading of optical image.

  • This paper studies the effect of the relaxation time on a two-dimensional thermoelastic medium which has a doubly porous structure in the presence of diffusion and gravity. The normal mode analysis is used to obtain the analytic expressions of the physical quantities, which we take the solution form in the exponential image. We have discussed a homogeneous thermoelastic half-space with double porosity with the effect of diffusion and gravity. The equations of generalized thermoelastic material with double porosity structure with one relaxation time have been developed. Moreover, the expressions of many physical quantities are explained. The general solutions, under specific boundary conditions of the problem, were found in some detail. In addition, numerical results are computed.

The Effect of Hue, Tone, and Necktie Width on Men's Wear Image (색상과 톤, 넥타이 폭이 남성복 이미지에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hue, tone, and necktie width on men's wear image. The experimental materials developed for this study were a set of stimulus and response scales. The stimuli were 12 color pictures, in which the hue(red, blue), tone(lt-shirt/dk-tie, dk-shirt/lt-tie), and necktie width(narrow, medium, width) were manipulated. The 7-point scale was used for evaluation of men's wear image. The subjects of this research were 120 female college students living in Seoul, Gwangju, Jinju, and Masan. The investigation was carried out at April-May 2009. The data were analyzed by using SPSS program. Analysis methods were ANOVA and Duncan-test. The results of this study were as follows.; The analyses of men's wear image according to hue, tone, and necktie width revealed that the concerned factors are four characteristic dimensions of ability-elegance, attractiveness, appeal-activity, and warmness. Hue showed an independent effect on ability-elegance, appeal-activity, and warmness. Tone showed an independent effect on warmness. Necktie width showed an independent effect on appeal-activity. In addition, interaction effects of hue and tone on ability-elegance were found. Interaction effects of hue and necktie width on ability-elegance and attractiveness were found.
