One of the major factors that effect sensor performance is analog noise that added in a sensor signal such as voltage. In multi-axis force sensors, error sources may be classified mainly in two groups. One is structural error due to inaccuracy of sensor body. The other error source is noise signals existing in the sensed information. This paper presents a brief review about the principle of multi-axis force sensors, and then proposes a method that can reduce the effect of noise signal to sensor performance. The method is to convert analog voltage signal to digital numbers near sensor body and then to read these digital signals and conduct signal processing in the computer. By this way, we can eliminate a bad effect of electromagnetic wave emitted from computer and of 60 Hz noise emitted from AC source. The proposed method is investigated through experimental demonstration. The experimental results show that it improves S/N ratio of the sensor about 40 times in our experimental setup.
As various mobile robots and manipulator robots have been commercialized, robots that can be used by individuals in their daily life have begun to appear. With the development of robots that support daily life, the interaction between robots and humans is becoming more important. Manipulator robots that support daily life must perform tasks such as pressing buttons or picking up objects safely. In many cases, this requires expensive multi-axis force/torque sensors to measure the interaction. In this study, we introduce a low-cost two-axis pressure sensor that can be applied to manipulators for education or research. The proposed system used three force sensitive resistor (FSR) sensors and the structure was fabricated by 3D printing. An experimental device using a load cell was constructed to measure the biaxial pressure. The manufactured prototype was able to distinguish the +-x-axis and the +-y-axis pressures.

In inference fit assembly process of the industrial robot, it basically needs the force data. One of the typical methods to get the force data is attaching torque sensors on the robot arm joint or end effector. This is effective way to reduce time delay and to improve preciseness of force control, but this method has several problems. To solve that problem, this paper suggests method which measures assembly force without torque sensor by using the sliding perturbation observer(SPO) and assembly process based on SPO to assemble successfully in inference assembly

This paper presents the design of a lab-built powered knee prosthesis based on a BLDC motor, a sensored impedance control using a force sensor, and a sensorless impedance control through torque estimation. Firstly, we describe the structure of the lab-built powered knee prosthesis and its limitations. Secondly, we decompose the gait cycle into five stages and apply the position-based impedance control for the powered knee prosthesis. Thirdly, we perform an experiment for the torque estimation and the sensorless impedance control of the prosthesis. The experimental results show that we can use the torque estimation to control the low impedance during the swing phase, although the estimated torque data has a delay compared with the measured torque by a load cell.

Ankle-foot orthosis with a pneumatic rubber actuator, which is intended for the assistance and the enhancement of ankle muscular activities was developed. In this study, the effectiveness of the system was investigated during plantarflexion motion of ankle joint. To find a effectiveness of the system, the subjects performed maximal voluntary isokinetic plantarflexion contraction on a Biodex-dynamometer. Plantarfexion torque of the ankle joint is assisted by subject's soleus muscle that is generated when ankle joint do plantarflexion motion. We used the muscular stiffness signal of a soleus muscle for feedback control of ankle-foot orthosis as physiological signal. For measurement of this signal, we made the muscular stiffness force sensor. We compared a muscular stiffness force of a soleus muscle between with feedback control and without it and a maximal plantarflexion torque between not wearing a ankle-foot orthosis, without feedback control wearing it and with feedback control wearing it in each ten elderly adults. The experimental result showed that a muscular stiffness force of a soleus muscle with feedback control was reduced and plantarflexion torque of an ankle joint only wearing ankle-foot orthosis was reduced but a plantarflexion torque with feedback control was increased. The amount of a increasing with feedback control is more higher than the amount of a decreasing only wearing it. Therefore, we confirmed the effectiveness of the developed ankle-foot orthosis with feedback control.
For the robot manipulator in performing precision tasks, it is indispensable that the robot utilize the various sensors for intelligence. In this paper, the hybrid position/force control method is implemented with a force/torque sensor, two personal computers, and a PUMA 560 manipulator. Two application S/W packages for edge following and peg-in-hole tasks are developed by the proposed force control algorithm. The related experimental results are then presented and discussed,

Robot hands capable of grasping or handling various objects are important for service robots to effectively aid humans. In particular, controlling a contact force and providing a compliant motion are essential when the hand is in contact with objects. Many dexterous robot hands equipped with force/torque sensors have been developed to perform force control, but they suffer from the complexity of control and high cost. In this paper, a low-cost robot hand based on SEA (Series Elastic Actuator), which is composed of compression spring, stretch sensor, and wire, is proposed. The grasping force can be estimated by measuring the compression length of spring, which would allow the hand to perform force control. A series of experimentations are carried out to verify the performance of force control of the proposed robot hand, and it is shown that it can successfully control the contact force without any additional force/torque sensors.
In controlling manipulators interacting with the external environment, an important role is played by the Force/Torque(F/T) sensors. Recently, a number of structures for F/T sensors have been proposed, and some criteria for their evaluation have been introduced. This paper presents a systematic analysis of F/T sensor at the design stage. A model of the F/T sensors, based on Stewart Platform structure, is developed on the basis of static and kinematic equation. The condition number defined by the kinematic velocity and force analysis of F/T sensor is used as a performance Index. Thus, 4 optimal structure factors of 6 D.O. F. F/T sensor are determined by using the condition number.

A marine diesel engine should realize optimal operation efficiency while reducing NOx, PM (Particulate Matters) and other emissions. Fuel injection systems that use electronic control can become an effective means of achieving that objective. However. it still needs some accurate and instant information in order to bring its ability into full potential while sailing on the sea. The important information of them are a shaft torque and continuous combustion pressures of all cylinders. The shaft torque and the propeller thrust described in this paper are measured at an intermediate shaft by using a unique principle that one of two electromagnet coils oscillates a vibrating strip which the length changes with force and the other coil picks up the change of the frequency of the vibrating strip. For further reference, the shaft power meter multiplied the torque by the shaft revolution has already had about 750 sets of sales performance. The research presented in this paper started about ten years ago and is concerned with the development of a combustion pressure sensor that uses the same principle. Recently, the pressure sensor which bears continuous operation has been developed after a hard struggle, that is, the system that consists of a shaft horsepower meter, a propeller thrust meter and a combustion pressure sensor has been completed and has been shown to be reliable. This paper describes the configuration of this system, the material of the combustion pressure sensor, the principle of that, and the improving point of the sensor, and, we finally consider the use of this system.

The aim of this study was to develop a method for installing strain gauges on moving, lubricating oil-filled, and sealed parts, such as drive shafts of equipment, including construction machinery. A measuring device was constructed using an embedded CPU and an IoT sensor to measure the strain of the strain gauge, which allowed for the measurement of axial torque and axial force, and subsequent analysis. To verify the performance of the developed device, the axial torque and axial force of the forklift were measured during operation using a strain gauge attached to the inside of the drive shaft. This study confirmed the possibility of measuring and analyzing the strain of a moving part, such as the inside of a drive shaft, which is sealed and filled with hydraulic oil.
