  • Although an accelerometer is a sensor that measures acceleration, it cannot be used by itself to measure the acceleration when the orientation of the sensor changes. This paper introduces a Kalman filter for the estimation of a sensor acceleration based on a six-axis inertial sensor (i.e., a three-axis accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope). The novelty of the proposed Kalman filter lies in the fact that its state vector includes not only the tilt angle variable but also the sensor acceleration. Thus, the filter can explicitly estimate the latter with a high accuracy. The accuracy of acceleration estimates were validated experimentally under three different dynamic conditions, using an optical motion capture system. It could be concluded that the performance of the proposed Kalman filter was comparable to that of the state-of-the-art estimation algorithm employed by the Xsens MTw. The proposed algorithm may be more suitable than inertial/magnetic sensor-based algorithms for various applications adopting six-axis inertial sensors.

  • In this paper, we design and implement an Android mobile application that helps hearing impaired people communicate based on STT(Speech-to-Text) and TTS(Text-to-Speech) APIs and accelerometer sensor of a smartphone. This application provides the ability to record what the hearing-Impairment person's interlocutor is saying with a microphone, convert it to text using the STT API, and display it to the hearing-Impairment person. In addition. In addition, when a hearing-impaired person inputs a text using the TTS API, it is converted into voice and told to the interlocutor. When a hearing-impaired person shakes their smartphone, an accelerometer based background service function is provided to run the application. The application implemented in this paper provides a function that allows hearing impaired people to communicate easily with other people when communicating with others without using sign language as a video call.

  • Purpose: Impaired reaching movement is commonly observed in children with cerebral palsy. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the inclination of seat surface can influence the reaching movement in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Methods: The subjects were 31 children, 16 children with spastic bilateral CP and 15 typically developing (TD) children. The children performed static sitting and forward reaching under three conditions: a horizontal seat surface (Horizontal $0^{\circ}$), a seat surface inclined anterior 15 degrees (Ant $15^{\circ}$), and a seat surface inclined posterior 15 degrees (Post $15^{\circ}$). A 3-axis accelerometer ('ZSTAR3') was used for analysis of the reaching movement. A 3-axis accelerometer was attached on the manubrium of the sternum, lateral epicondyle of the humerus, and styloid process of the ulna. We measured the reaction time, movement time, and data amount during reaching the 8 cm target with an index finger on the three inclined seat surfaces. Results: Reaction time and movement time for CPs showed significant delay; comparing the TD's and CP's amount was significantly greater than the TD's during reaching task (p<0.05). In particular, CP's reaction time and movement time on a seat surface inclined Ant $15^{\circ}$ was significantly more delayed compared with the other seat surfaces (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our results suggest that seat-inclination intervention may provide an ergonomic approach for children with spastic cerebral palsy.

  • The modal characteristics of a compressor wheel of an automotive turbocharger have been investigated using an experimental method based on an acoustic frequency response function, p/f(${\omega}$), where p is sound pressure radiated from a structure, and f is impact force. First, a well-defined annular disc with narrow radial slots was examined to check whether the vibro-acoustic test could precisely determine natural quencies and vibration modes of structures showing that the vibro-acoustic test proposed in this paper was comparable to the conventional modal test with an accelerometer and the numerical analysis. The conventional method has been found to be inappropriate for compressor wheel because of additional mass due to the accelerometer and additional damping from the accelerometer cable alter the dynamic responses of the wheel blades. odal characteristics of the wheel have been defined using vibro-acoustic test and verified with the results from another conventional method using a laser vibrometer. Natural quencies and mode shapes of a turbocharger wheel, which can't be precisely obtained with onventional method, could be defined accurately without the additional effects from sensor and cable. Proposed method can be applied to small structures where conventional sensors and cables could generate troubles.

  • The railway turnout system is one of the most important systems that set train routes. Turnout system integrity should be guaranteed for robust train operation. To diagnose the turnout system status, LVDT and accelerometers are installed on a turnout system in a high speed line. The LVDT and accelerometers produce signals containing physical meaning of the turnout systems. The LVDT produces the displacement of the rail gauge and vibration when point moving or a train passes on turnout systems and the accelerometer produces impact forces induced by wheel sets. We performed data extraction from the measured signals and parameterized the extracted signals into meaningful quantities. The parameters are used for classifying whether the turnout status is normal. We proposed two methods for the classification, one uses probabilistic distribution and the other artificial neuron networks. The probabilistic distribution is used for the parameter being classified by the quantities and the artificial neuron networks for the form classification. Finally, we show how to learn the normal status of a turnout system.

  • In this paper, we present a design and implementation of three dimensional pointing device using Inertial Navigation System(INS) that acquires coordinates and location information without environmental dependancy. The INS measures coordinates based on the data from gyroscope and accelerometer and corrects the measured data from accelerometer using Kalman-Filter. In order to implement the idea of three dimensional pointing device, we choose a three dimensional Space-recognition mouse and use RFIC wireless communication to send a measured data to receiver for printing out the coordinate on display equipment. Based on INS and Kalman-Filter theoretical knowledge, we design and implement a three dimensional pointing device and verified the usability as an input device that can capture a human's move. also, we describe the applicability of this device in ubiquitous computing environment.

  • Longitudinal wave tests with finite elastic medium were performed to investigate the difference between measured values and theoretical values of propagation velocity and elasticity modulus. Each accelerometer was attached on finite elastic medium with same phase and different positions to check the particle motion. The results show that measured values of elasticity moduli from both time domain and frequency domain were similiar to theoretical value. Polarity of signal depends entirely on the phase of accelerometer. It proved that the propagation velocity and the particle motion are in the same direction when a compressive stress is applied. And also the propagation velocity and the particle motion depend on the intensity of the stress and material properties respectively.

  • This study deals with the viability of using a designed geometrical model consists of plane, polar coordinates (PC) and span length in the determination of bridges deformation. The data of a Tianjin Yonghe bridge located in the southern part of China as collected by RTK-DGPS technique and Accelerometer were used in the analysis. Kalman filter and fast Fourier transformation (FFT) analyses were used to determine the frequency. The results indicate that the designed plane and PC geometrical model are easy to calculate the long-time structural deformation monitoring. In addition, the observed frequency using GPS with the rate of 20 Hz doesn't give correction natural frequency of the observation structures.

  • Currently, falling to industrial field workers is causing serious injuries. Therefore, many researchers are actively studying the fall by using acceleration sensor, gyro sensor, pressure sensor and image information. Also, as the spread of smartphones becomes common, techniques for determining the fall by using an acceleration sensor built in a smartphone are being studied. The proposed method has complexity due to fusion of various sensor data and it is still insufficient to develop practical application. Therefore, in this paper, we use acceleration sensor module built in smartphone to collect acceleration data, propose a simple falling algorithm based on accelerometer sensor data after normalization and preprocessing, and implement an Android based app.
