  • In this paper, a new land preview system using laser range finder based on heave estimation algorithm is proposed. The proposed land preview system is an equipment which measures the shape of forward topography for autonomous vehicle. To implement this land preview system, the laser range finder is generally used because of its wide measuring range and robustness under various environmental condition. Then the current location of the vehicle has to be known to generate the shape of forward topography and sensors based on acceleration such as IMU and accelerometer are generally utilized to measure heave motion in the conventional land preview system. However the drawback to these sensors is that they are too expensive for low-cost vehicle such as mobile robot and their measurement error is increased for mobile robot with abrupt acceleration. In order to overcome this drawback, an algorithm that estimates heave motion using the information of odometer and previously measured topography is proposed in this paper. The proposed land preview system based on the heave estimation algorithm is verified through simulation and experiments for various terrain using a simulator and a real system.

  • Railroad bridges account for 25% of the entire high-speed rail network. Railway bridges are subject to gradual structural degradation or fatigue accumulation due to consistent and repeating excitation by fast moving trains. Wireless sensing technology has opened up a new avenue for bridge health monitoring owing to its low-cost, high fidelity, and multiple sensing capability. On the other hand, measuring the transient response during train passage is quite challenging that the current wireless sensor system cannot be applied due to the intrinsic time delay of the sensor network. Therefore, this paper presents a framework for monitoring such transient responses with wireless sensing systems using 1) real-time excessive vibration monitoring through ultra-low-power MEMS accelerometers, and 2) post-event time synchronization scheme. The ultra-low power accelerometer continuously monitors the vibration and trigger network when excessive vibrations are detected. The entire network of wireless smart sensors starts sensing through triggering and the post-event time synchronization is conducted to compensate for the time error on the measured responses. The results of this study highlight the potential of detecting the impact load and triggering the entire network, as well as the effectiveness of the post-event time synchronized scheme for compensating for the time error. A numerical and experimental study was carried out to validate the proposed sensing hardware and time synchronization method.

Because sensors have different interfaces, several types of interface controller on FPGA need. Using this equipment, several types of interface controller, which can control ADC (analog-to-digital converter) for analog sensor outputs and $I^2C$ (Inter-Integrated Circuit), SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface Bus), and GPIO (General-Purpose Input/Output) for digital sensor outputs, can be designed on FPGA. Image processing hardware using image sensors and display controller for real and image-processed images or videos can be design on FPGA chip. This equipment can design a SOC (System On Chip) consisting of a hard process core on Linux OS and a FPGA block for IOT system which can communicate with wire and wireless networks. Using the education equipment, an example of hardware design using image sensor and accelerometer is described, and an example of syllabus for "Digital system design using FPGA" course is introduced. Using the education equipment, students can develop the ability to design some hardware, and to train the ability for the creative capstone design through conceptual, partial-level, and detail designs.

  • Recently, the advance of accurate dynamic displacement measurement devices, such as GPS, computer vision, and optic laser sensor, has enhanced the structural monitoring technology. In this study, the dynamic displacement data was used to verify the applicability of the structural physical parameter estimation method through subspace system identification. The subspace system identification theory for estimating state-space model from measured data and physics-based interpretation for deriving the physical parameter of the estimated system are presented. Three-degree-freedom steel structures were fabricated for the experimental verification of the theory in this study. Laser displacement sensor and accelerometer were used to measure the displacement data of each floor and the acceleration data of the shaking table. Discrete state-space model generated from measured data was verified for precision. The discrete state-space model generated from the measured data extracted the floor stiffness of the building after accuracy verification. In addition, based on the story stiffness extracted from the state space model, five column stiffening and damage samples were set up to extract the change rate of story stiffness for each sample. As a result, in case of reinforcement and damage under the same condition, the stiffness change showed a high matching rate.

  • Normally, aero photography using UAV uses about 430 MHz bandwidth radio frequency (RF) modem and navigates and remotely controls through the connection between UAV and ground control system. When using the exhausting method, it has communication range of 1-2 km with frequent cross line and since wireless communication sends information using radio wave as a carrier, it has 10 mW of signal strength limitation which gave restraints on life my distance communication. The purpose of research is to use communication technologies such as long-term evolution (LTE) of smart camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other communication modules and cameras that can transfer data to design and develop automatic shooting system that acquires images to UAV at the necessary locations. We conclude that the android based UAV filming and communication module system can not only film images with just one smart camera but also connects UAV system and ground control system together and also able to obtain real-time 3D location information and 3D position information using UAV system, GPS, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and magnetic measuring sensor which will allow us to use real-time position of the UAV and correction work through aerial triangulation.

  • In this research, a wireless movable systems is introduced that is applicable for real-world clinical examination in order to resolve the inconvenience of wired motion analysis system which uses markers by measuring more accurately the angle of the 3D motion. The system is composed of bluetooth data transmission and 6 DOF inertial measurement system that is composed of 3-axis acceleration and 3-axis gyroscope. The samples were collected from 10 feet of 5 young children who were confirmed as patients having flat feet and achilles tendonitis by podiatric expert in pediatrics, and the validity of the system was evaluated by comparison with the opinion by the expert using the EMG data and the data measured by the developed system. ROM of ankle was measured by the difference between the maximum and the minimum peaks of 3-axis values (pitch, roll and yaw) measured at lateral malleolus bone, and based on this measured value, the eversion rate became relatively higher as flat feet state become worse, which is equivalent to the opinion from the podiatric experts. It was shown that there is a relation between the certain muscle activities and the abnormal motion of foot caused by disease.

  • In this study, we designed and implemented a step detection analyzer that can compare and analyze the step detection rates and results among the step detection algorithms. The step detection analyzer converts 3-axes accelerometer data into continuous energy stream through SVM operation, shows the horizontal comparison among the step detection results for each step detection algorithms, and can make elemental detection analyses. For these processes, the step detection analyzer presents the continuous energy stream as energy waveform, checks the peak values and time location of the detected steps with step detection algorithms, and gives visual interface to get some possible causes in cases of step detection miss. It can also give the threshold graph for each algorithm to check the threshold value on missed cases directly and can help to get more appropriate threshold values or other adjustable parameters in step detection algorithm. This step detection analyzer can be applied efficiently on performance enhancement of step detection algorithm, on deciding an appropriate algorithm for a specific step counter system in the various step counter filed operations.

  • The next generation high-speed train(HEMU-430X) is Korea's first electric multiple unit type, high speed vehicle resulting from a national R&D project. Tests have been conducted on the Kyungbu High Speed Line running at speeds up to 354.64km/h, and analysis of the dynamic behavior of the train was carried out to evaluate its safety. In this study, a simplified method using an accelerometer(the method specified in UIC 518 OR) was chosen to analyze the safety of the train's dynamic behavior. The section chosen for analysis section was ${\pm}10{\sim}20km/h$ with respect to the maximum speed point. In addition, we analyzed the trend of this dynamic behavior with increasing speed by comparing the analyzed values with those of UIC 518 OR. The dynamic behavior results met the limit values of UIC 518 OR and the study indicates that this trend is predicted to continue at speeds above 354km/h.

  • An artificial intelligence-based cable tension estimation model was developed to expand the utilization of data obtained from cable accelerometers of cable-stayed bridges. The model was based on an algorithm for selecting the natural frequency in the tension estimation process based on the vibration method and an applied artificial neural network (ANN). The training data of the ANN was composed after converting the cable acceleration data into the frequency, and machine learning was carried out using the characteristics with a pattern on the natural frequency. When developing the training data, the frequencies with various amplitudes can be used to represent the frequencies of multiple shapes to improve the selection performance for natural frequencies. The performance of the model was estimated by comparing it with the control criteria of the tension estimated by an expert. As a result of the verification using 139 frequencies obtained from the cable accelerometer as the input, the natural frequency was determined to be similar to the real criteria and the estimated tension of the cable by the natural frequency was 96.4% of the criteria.
