In this study we apply Support Vector Machine (SVM) to the prediction of geo-effective halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The SVM, which is one of machine learning algorithms, is used for the purpose of classification and regression analysis. We use halo and partial halo CMEs from January 1996 to April 2010 in the SOHO/LASCO CME Catalog for training and prediction. And we also use their associated X-ray flare classes to identify front-side halo CMEs (stronger than B1 class), and the Dst index to determine geo-effective halo CMEs (stronger than -50 nT). The combinations of the speed and the angular width of CMEs, and their associated X-ray classes are used for input features of the SVM. We make an attempt to find the best model by using cross-validation which is processed by changing kernel functions of the SVM and their parameters. As a result we obtain statistical parameters for the best model by using the speed of CME and its associated X-ray flare class as input features of the SVM: Accuracy=0.66, PODy=0.76, PODn=0.49, FAR=0.72, Bias=1.06, CSI=0.59, TSS=0.25. The performance of the statistical parameters by applying the SVM is much better than those from the simple classifications based on constant classifiers.
To find the relationship between solar flares and halo CMEs using stereoscopic observations, we investigate 182 flare-associated halo CMEs among 306 front-side halo CMEs from 2009 to 2013. We have determined the 3D parameters (radial speed and angular width) of these CMEs by applying StereoCAT to multi-spacecraft data (SOHO and STEREO). For this work, we use flare parameters (peak flux and fluence) taken from GOES X-ray flare list and 2D CME parameters (projected speed, apparent angular width, and kinetic energy) taken from CDAW SOHO LASCO CME catalog. Major results from this study are as follows. First, the relationship between flare peak flux (or fluence) and CME speed is almost same for both 2D and 3D cases. Second, there is a possible correlation between flare fluence and CME width, which is more evident in 3D case than 2D one. Third, the flare fluence is well correlated with CME kinetic energy (CC=0.63). Fourth, there is an upper limit of CME kinetic energy for a given flare fluence (or peak flux). For example, a possible CME kinetic energy ranges from 1030.6 to 1033 erg for a given X1.0 class flare. Our results will be discussed in view of the physical mechanism of solar eruptions.
This paper presents a locally adaptive HDR algorithm using the integral image and MSRCR for LDR images with inadequate exposure. There are two categories in controlling the dynamic range, which are global and local tone mappings. Since the global ones are relatively simple but have some limitations at considering regional characteristics, the local ones are often utilized and MSRCR is a representative method. MSRCR gives moderate results, but it requires lots of computations for multi-scale surround Gaussian functions and produces the Halo effect around the edges. Therefore, in order to resolve these main problems, the proposed algorithm remarkably reduces the computation of the surrounds due to the use of the integral image. And a set of variable-sized windows is adopted to decrease the Halo effect, according to the type of pixel's region. In addition, an offset controlling function is presented, which is mainly affected to the subjective image quality and based on the global input and the desired output means. As the results, the proposed algorithm no more use Gaussian functions and can reduce the computation amount and the Halo effect.
Using a cosmological ${\Lambda}CDM$ simulation, we analyze the differences between the widely-used spin parameters suggested by Peebles and Bullock. The dimensionless spin parameter ${\lambda}$ proposed by Peebles is theoretically well-justified but includes an annoying term, the potential energy, which cannot be directly obtained from observations and is computationally expensive to calculate in numerical simulations. The Bullock's spin parameter ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ avoids this problem assuming the isothermal density profile of a virialized halo in the Newtonian potential model. However, we find that there exists a substantial discrepancy between ${\lambda}$ and ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ depending on the adopted potential model (Newtonian or Plummer) to calculate the halo total energy and that their redshift evolutions differ to each other significantly. Therefore, we introduce a new spin parameter, ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$, which is simply designed to roughly recover the value of ${\lambda}$ but to use the same halo quantities as used in ${\lambda}^{\prime}$. If the Plummer potential is adopted, the ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$ is related to the Bullock's definition as ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}=0.80{\times}(1+z)^{-1/12}{\lambda}^{\prime}$. Hence, the new spin parameter ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$ distribution becomes consistent with a log-normal distribution frequently seen for the ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ while its mean value is much closer to that of ${\lambda}$. On the other hand, in case of the Newtonian potential model, we obtain the relation of ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}=(1+z)^{-1/8}{\lambda}^{\prime}$; there is no significant difference at z = 0 as found by others but ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ becomes more overestimated than ${\lambda}$ or ${\lambda}^{\prime\prime}$ at higher redshifts. We also investigate the dependence of halo spin parameters on halo mass and redshift. We clearly show that although the ${\lambda}^{\prime}$ for small-mass halos with $M_h$ < $2{\times}10^{12}M_{\odot}$ seems redshift independent after z = 1, all the spin parameters explored, on the whole, show a stronger correlation with the increasing halo mass at higher redshifts.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate DNA fragmentation status in human spermatozoa according to specific tail swelling patterns determined via hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST). Methods: Frozen semen samples from 21 healthy donors were thawed and prepared by the swim-up technique for use in intracytoplasmic sperm injection. The semen samples were treated for 5 minutes as part of the HOST procedure and then underwent the sperm chromatin dispersion test using a Halosperm kit. DNA fragmentation status (large halo, medium halo, small halo, no halo, or degraded) and the specific tail swelling pattern ("a"-"g") were assessed at the level of a single spermatozoon. A total of 42,000 spermatozoa were analyzed, and the percentage of spermatozoa without DNA fragmentation (as evidenced by a large or medium halo) was assessed according to the specific tail swelling patterns observed. Results: The HOST examinations showed that > 93% of spermatozoa across all types displayed no DNA fragmentation. The percentage of spermatozoa without DNA fragmentation was 100% in type "d", 98.67% in type "g", and 98.17% in type "f" spermatozoa. Conclusion: We found that the type "d" spermatozoa displayed no DNA fragmentation, but the other types of spermatozoa also displayed very low rates of DNA fragmentation. This result may be associated with the processing of the spermatozoa by density gradient centrifugation and the swim-up technique.
We present the dependence of halo properties on two different Galactic potentials: the $St{\ddot{a}}ckel$ potential and the Milky Way-like potential known as "Galpy". Making use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 (SDSS DR12), we find that the shape of the metallicity distribution and rotation velocity distribution abruptly changes at 15 kpc of $Z_{max}$ (the maximum distance of stellar orbit above or below the Galactic plane) and 32 kpc of $r_{max}$ (the maximum distance of an orbit from the Galactic center) in the $St{\ddot{a}}ckel$, which indicates that the transition from the inner to outer halo occurs at those distances. When adopting the $St{\ddot{a}}ckel$ potential, stars with $Z_{max}$ > 15 kpc show a retrograde motion of $V_{\phi}=-60km\;s^{-1}$, while stars with $r_{max}$ > 32 kpc show $V_{\phi}=-150km\;s^{-1}$. If we impose $V_{\phi}$ < $-150km\;s^{-1}$ to the stars with $Z_{max}$> 15 kpc or $r_{max}$> 32, we obtain the peak of the metallicity distribution at [Fe/H] = -1.9 and -1.7 respectively. However, there is the transition of the metallicity distribution at $Z_{max}=25kpc$, whereas there is no noticeable retrograde motion in the Galpy. The reason for this is that stars with high retrograde motion in the $St{\ddot{a}}ckel$ potential are unbound and stars with low rotation velocity reach to larger region of $Z_{max}$ and $r_{max}$ due to shallower potential in the Galpy. These results prove that as the adopted Galactic potential can affect the interpretation of the halo properties, it is required to have a more realistic Galactic potential for the thorough understanding of the dichotomy of the Galactic halo.

The second generation of stars in the globular clusters (GCs) of the Milky Way (MW) exhibit unusually high N, Na, or Al, compared to typical Galactic halo stars at similar metallicities. The halo field stars enhanced with such elements are believed to have originated in disrupted GCs or escaped from existing GCs. We identify such stars in the metallicity range -3.0 < [Fe/H] < 0.0 from a sample of ~36,800 giant stars observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope survey, and present their dynamical properties. The N-rich population (NRP) and N-normal population (NNP) among our giant sample do not exhibit similarities in either in their metallicity distribution function (MDF) or dynamical properties. We find that, even though the MDF of the NRP looks similar to that of the MW's GCs in the range of [Fe/H] < -1.0, our analysis of the dynamical properties does not indicate similarities between them in the same metallicity range, implying that the escaped members from existing GCs may account for a small fraction of our N-rich stars, or the orbits of the present GCs have been altered by the dynamical friction of the MW. We also find a significant increase in the fraction of N-rich stars in the halo field in the very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] < -2.0) regime, comprising up to ~20% of the fraction of the N-rich stars below [Fe/H] = -2.5, hinting that partially or fully destroyed VMP GCs may have in some degree contributed to the Galactic halo. A more detailed dynamical analysis of the NRP reveals that our sample of N-rich stars do not share a single common origin. Although a substantial fraction of the N-rich stars seem to originate from the GCs formed in situ, more than 60% of them are not associated with those of typical Galactic populations, but probably have extragalactic origins associated with Gaia Sausage/Enceladus, Sequoia, and Sagittarius dwarf galaxies, as well as with presently unrecognized progenitors.
The dark matter (DM) only simulations have been exploited to study e.g. the large scale structures and properties of a halo. In a baryon side, the high-resolution hydrodynamic simulation such as IllustrisTNG has helped extend the physics of gas along with stars and DM. However, the expansive computational cost of hydrodynamic simulations limits the size of a simulated universe whereas DM-only simulations can generate the universe of the cosmological horizon size approximately. I will introduce a pipeline to estimate baryonic properties of a galaxy inside a dark matter (DM) halo in DM-only simulations using a machine trained on high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations. An extremely randomized tree (ERT) algorithm is used together with multiple novel improvements such as a refined error function in machine training and two-stage learning. By applying our machine to the DM-only simulation of a large volume, I then validate the pipeline that rapidly generates a galaxy catalog from a DM halo catalog using the correlations the machine found in hydrodynamic simulations. I will discuss the benefits that machine-based approaches like this entail, as well as suggestions to raise the scientific potential of such approaches.
Kudzu vine(Pueraria montana var. lobata) is an invasive climbing woody vine that envelops trees and shrubs, pressing physically and shutting out sunlight, which needs to be controlled. Kudzu vine pathogens were surveyed as a way to seek its biocontrol agents in 2002. Occurrence of a bacterial halo blight disease of kudzu vine was observed at several localities in Korea including Euiwang and Suwon in Gyeonggi Province, Daejon, and Gochang and Buan in Jeonbuk Province. Symptoms of brown to black spots with a surrounding yellowish halo appeared from June and lasted till the rainy season without much expansion, but accompanying often leaf blight and defoliation. Isolated bacteria were identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola based on physiological and cultural characteristics, Biolog, fatty acid and 16S rDNA sequencing analyses. In artificial inoculation test, these bacteria produced the same halo spot symptoms on kudzu vine and bean plants. They also induced hypersensitive responses (HR) on tobacco, tomato, and chili pepper leaves. This is the first report of a bacterial disease of kudzu vine in Korea, and the bacterial pathogen can be used as a biocontrol agent against the pest plant.
