  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate of Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) coating on shear bond strength with denture base resin in Co-Cr and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Materials and Methods: Co-Cr and Ti-6Al-4V alloy disks (10 mm in diameter, 2.5 mm in thickness; each other: n = 14) were prepared and divided with 2 groups each other by ZrN coating. After primer was applied to disks surface, denture base resin with diameter 6 mm, height 5 mm was bonded on metal disk surface. After surface roughness was measured by Profiler, shear bond strength was determined with Universal testing machine and analyzed with two-way ANOVA. The specimen surfaces and failure mode were examined using a scanning electron microscope. Results: ZrN coated groups showed significantly higher rough surface than non-coated groups (P < 0.05). Irrespective of alloy materials, shear bond strength of ZrN coated groups were lower than non-coated groups (P < 0.001). The scanning electron microscope (SEM) of ZrN coated groups showed mixed and adhesive fractures. Conclusion: ZrN coating weakened bonding strength between denture base resin and Co-Cr, Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

  • This study was undertaken to measure the electrochemical corrosion of amorphous $Zr_{65}Al_8Ni_{15}Cu_{12}$ (at.%) alloy ribbon under various conditions, including 0.4 mM HCl solution, and for various values of the pH and the immersion time. The corrosion potentials($E_{corr}$) for the amorphous $Zr_{65}Al_8Ni_{15}Cu_{12}$ alloy in 0.4 mM HCl decreased with increasing temperature; the corrosion current density($I_{corr}$) increased with increasing temperature in general. The polarization resistance($R_p$) was inversely proportional to the corrosion rate. While pH=7, 9, 11 was not as sensitive as pH=3, 5, pH=3 was more sensitive for amorphous $Zr_{65}Al_8Ni_{15}Cu_{12}$ alloy than other pHs specially. The change of mass in the 70 mM $H_2SO_4$ solution with immersion time was the greatest in the first 100 h.

  • In this study, the circumferential creep behaviors ofpilgered advanced Zirconium alloy tubes such as Zr-Nb-O and Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe were investigated in the temperature range of $400\sim500^{\circ}C$ and in the stress range of 80$\sim$150MPa. The test results indicate that the stress exponent for the steady-state creep rate of the Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe alloy decreases with the increase of stress(from 6$\sim$7 to 4), while that of the Zr-Nb-O alloy is nearly independent of stress(5$\sim$6). The activation energy of creep deformation is found to be nearly the same as the activation energy for Zr self diffusion. This indicates that the creep deformation may be controlled by dislocation climb mechanism in Zr-Nb-O. On the other hand, the transition of stress exponent(from 6-7 to 4) in Zr-Nb Sn-Fe strongly suggests the transition of the rate controlling mechanism at high stresses. The lower stress exponent at high stresses in Zr-Nb-Sn-Fe can be explained by the dynamic deformation aging effect caused by interaction of dislocations with Sn substitutional atoms.

  • The pressure tubes made of cold-worked Zr-2.5Nb alloy are subjected to creep deformation during service period resulting in changes to their geometry such as longitudinal elongation, diameter increase and sagging. To evaluate integrity of them, information on the material creep property of the serviced tubes is essential. As one of the methods with which the creep property is directly measured from the serviced components, small punch(SP) creep testing has been considered as a substitute for the conventional uniaxial creep testing. In this study, applicability of the SP creep testing to Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube alloy was studied particularly by measuring the power law creep constants, A, n. The SP creep test has been successfully applied fur other high temperature materials which have isotropic behavior. Since the Zr-2.5Nb alloy has anisotropic property, applicability of the SP creep testing can be limited. Uniaxial creep tests and small punch creep tests were conducted with Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube alloy along with finite element analyses. Creep constants obtained by each test method are compared. It was argued that the SP creep test result gave results reflecting material properties of both directions. But the equations derived in the previous study for isotropic materials need to be modified. Discussions were made fur future research directions for application of the SP creep testing to Zr-2.5Nb tube alloy.

  • Effects of alloy modification for the $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy as an electrode materials have been investigated. When Ti in the alloy was partially substituted by Zr, the hydrogen storage capacity and subsequently the discharge capacity increased significantly, however, the activation characteristic and rate capability decreased. By substituting Mn with other elements (Cr, Co and Fe) in the alloy, discharge capacity decreased but the cycle life and rate capability were improved. Considering both the discharge capacity, the high rate discharge property and cycle life, the $Zr_{0.7}Ti_{0.3}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$ alloy among the alloys subjected to the test was found to be a prominent alloy for a practical usage.

  • The hydrogen sorption speeds of $Zr_{57}V_{36}Fe_7$ amorphous alloy and its crystallized alloys were evaluated at room temperature $Zr_{57}V_{36}Fe_7$ amorphous alloy was prepared by ball milling. The amorphous alloy was crystallized through two stages. Initially, $\alpha-Zr$ solid solution was appeared from the amorphous phase. Two cubic Laves compounds were precipitated afterwards from the remained amorphous and from excessively saturated solid solution at higher temperature. The hydrogen sorption speed of the partially crystallized alloy was higher than that of amorphous. The enhanced sorption speed of partially crystallized alloy was explained in terms of surface oxygen stability which has been known to retard the activation of amorphous alloys. The retardation could be reduce by crystallization process resulting in the observed increase in sorption property.

  • The hydrogen sorption speeds of $Zr_{57}V_{36}Ti_7$ amorphous alloy and its crystallized alloys were evaluated at room temperature. $Zr_{57}V_{36}Ti_7$ amorphous alloy was prepared by ball milling. The hydrogen sorption rate of the partially crystallized alloy was higher than that of amorphous. The enhanced sorption rate of partially crystallized alloy was explained in terms of grain refinement that has been known to promote the diffusion into metallic bulk of the gases. The grain refinement could be obtained by crystallization of amorphous phase resulting in the observed increase in sorption property.

  • The corrosion behaviors of Zr-based alloys were very sensitive to their microstructures which were determined by manufacturing process. The specimens of Zr-based alloy named as HANA-4 for nuclear fuel cladding were investigated in order to get the optimized manufacturing process such as the intermediate annealing temperature and cold working steps after the ${\beta}$ quenching. From the microstructural analysis, cold worked microstructure of the samples was changed to the recrystallized microstructure by performed process. The corrosion behaviors of HANA-4 alloy were affected by the different manufacturing process. The ${\beta}$-Zr phase was formed in the matrix and the Nb concentration in the ${\beta}$-Zr phase was increased as progressing the manufacturing process. So, it was found that the corrosion rate of HANA-4 alloy was affected by the Nb concentration in the matrix.

  • The metallic implant materials are widely used in biomedical industries due to their specific mechanical strenth, corrosion registance, and superior biocompatability. These metallic materials, however, suffer from the stress-shielding effect and the generation of artifacts in the magnetic resonance imaging exam. In the present study, we develope a Zr-based alloys for the biomedical implant materials with low elastic modulus and low magnetic susceptibility. The Zr-7Si-xSn alloys were fabricated by an arc melting process. The elastic modulus was 24~31 GPa of the zirconium-based alloy. The average magnetic susceptibility value of the Zr-7Si-xSn alloy was 1.25 × 10-8cm3g-1. The average Icorr value of the Zr-7Si-xSn alloy was 0.2 ㎂/cm2. The Sn added zirconium alloy, Zr-7Si-xSn, is very interested and attractive as a biomaterial that reduces the stress-shielding effect caused by the difference of elastic modulus between human bone and metallic implant.
