  • Electrical and structural properties were investigated on the effects of ZnO and the lead-free NKN-LST ceramics with the addition of ZnO were fabricated by a conventional mixed oxide method. A gradual change in the crystal and microstructure was observed with the increase of ZnO addition. For the NKN-LST-ZnO ceramics sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$, bulk density increased with the addition of ZnO and showed maximum value at addition 2.0mol% of ZnO. Curie temperature of the NKN-LST-ZnO ceramics slightly decreased with adding ZnO. The dielectric constant, piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) and electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) increased at the small amount of ZnO addition, which might be due to the increase in density. The high piezoelectric properties = 153 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor = 0.484 and dielectric constant = 2883 were obtained for the NKN-LST+0.5ZnO ceramics sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2h.

  • ZnO thin films were deposited on amorphous slide glass and $SiO_2$/Si substrates by Facing Targets Sputtering method with sputtering current 0.1~0.8 A, working pressure 0.5~3 mTorr and substrate temperature R.T~$400^{\circ}C$. When the sputtering current was 0.4 A, working pressure was 0.5 mTorr and substrate temperature was 30$0^{\circ}C$, ${\Delta}{\Theta}_{50}$ value of ZnO/glass and ZnO/$SiO_2$/si thin film was $3.8^{\circ}$ and $2.98^{\circ}$, respectively. In these conditions, we knew that ZnO thin film were deposited with good c-axis orientation on amorphous slide glass by FTS system.

  • The interfacial reaction, spangle and coating thickness of galvanized steel in Ni added Zn-0.18Al bath have been investigated. The size of spangle and thickness of reaction layer were observed under an optical microscope, SEM and EDS. Analysing the experimental results concerning spangle size of galvanized steel it was found that Ni addition in Zn-0.18Al bath tended to be minimized spangle size. For Zn-0.18Al bath, addition of 0.1Ni suppressed the formation of Fe-Zn intermetallic compounds but increased with Ni content above 0.1%. The coating thickness of galvanized steel was reduced with Ni addition in Zn-0.18Al bath, especially in Zn-0.18Al-0.05Ni bath. Addition of Al in Ni containing bath resulted in forming the Al-Ni intermetallic compounds such as $Al_3$Ni$_2$ and $Al_2$Ni which consist most of top precipitates.

  • In this study, we tried to find out the appropriate synthetic condition and magnetic properties of Ni-Zn ferrite {(NixZn1-x)Fe2O4} powders (where X=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, ……0.9, 1). Ferrite powders were prepared by wet-direct method at 86℃ for 6hrs from FeCl36H2O, NiCl26H2O, and ZnCl2. The powders of (NixZn1-x)Fe2O4 (where X=0.4, 0.5, 0.6) have a good crystallinity, but the other ferrite powders consist of crystal and precursor ferrite. The ferrite powder's lattice constant is increased when ratio of ZnO contant is increased in the ferrite composition. And initial permeability was measured after sintering, result indicated regular pattern except (Ni0.4Zn0.6)Fe2O4 when the frequency were changed 10KHz to 10MHz.

  • Nanoparticles of the semiconductor catalyst $Cd_xZn_{1-x}S$ were embedded into the metal organic framework MIL-101(Cr) to obtain $Cd_xZn_{1-x}S@MIL-101$(Cr) nanocomposites. These materials not only possess high surface areas and mesopores but also show good utilization of light energy. The ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance patterns of $Cd_xZn_{1-x}S@MIL-101$(Cr) nanocomposites showed that $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S@MIL-101$(Cr) possessed good visible light response ability among the synthesized nanocomposites. The photocatalytic performance of the $Cd_xZn_{1-x}S@MIL-101$(Cr) nanocomposites were tested via degradation and mineralization of methylene blue in neutral water solution under light irradiation using a 300W xenon lamp. As a result, using $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S@MIL-101$(Cr) as a catalyst, 99.2% of methylene blue was mineralized within 30 min. Due to the synergistic effect of adsorption by the MIL-101(Cr) component and photocatalytic degradation provided by the $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S$ component, the $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S@MIL-101$(Cr) catalyst displayed superior photocatalytic performance relative to $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S$ and MIL-101(Cr). Furthermore, $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S@MIL-101$(Cr) possessed excellent stability during photodegradation and exhibited good reusability. The remarkable photocatalytic performance of $Cd_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}S@MIL-101$(Cr) is likely due to the effective transfer of electrons and holes at the heterojunction interfaces.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate effects of zinc (Zn) bearing palygorskite (ZnPal) supplementation on growth performance, hepatic mineral content, and antioxidant status of broilers at early age. Methods: A total of 240 1-day-old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were allocated into 5 treatments with 6 replicates of 8 chicks each. Birds in 5 treatments were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0 (Control group; Analyzed Zn content: 81 mg/kg), 20, 40, 60, and 80 mg/kg Zn as ZnPal for 21 days, respectively. Blood, liver and intestinal mucosa were collected at 21 days of age. Results: Treatments did not affect growth performance of broilers during the 21-day study (p>0.05). The contents of hepatic Zn and magnesium (Mg) were linearly increased (p<0.001) by ZnPal supplementation. ZnPal inclusion linearly (p = 0.007) reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in serum. The activity of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) in liver increased linearly (p = 0.001) with concentration of ZnPal in diet. ZnPal inclusion linearly (p = 0.036) and quadratically (p = 0.005) increased T-SOD activity, and linearly (p = 0.012) increased copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) activity in jejunal mucosa. The maximum responses of hepatic and jejunal antioxidant enzymes activities (T-SOD and Cu/Zn SOD) were found when supplementing the basal diet with 60 mg/kg Zn as ZnPal. Furthermore, ZnPal supplementation quadratically (p = 0.001) increased Cu/Zn SOD activity in ileal mucosa, and its maximum activity was observed in the diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg Zn as ZnPal. Conclusion: ZnPal supplementation did not alter growth performance of broilers. Dietary ZnPal inclusion could increase concentrations of hepatic trace minerals (Zn and Mg) and inhibit lipid peroxidation by reducing serum MDA accumulation, with the optimal dosage of Zn from ZnPal being 80 mg/kg diet (analyzed Zn content in the diet: 165 mg/kg), and 60 mg/kg Zn as ZnPal (analyzed Zn content in the diet: 148 mg/kg) was the optimum dosage for broilers to achieve maximum antioxidant enzyme activities.

  • The study was carried out to analyze the pollutant Fe, Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd for sediments collected from lake in K river basin. Three analytical methods currently used in Korea, Japan, U.S.A, were compared. Pretreatment using microwave digestion showed higher analytical results for Fe, Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd than Korean Official Method(KOM) and American Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP) Method. Also, analytical results using microwave digestion, TCLP and KOM were as follows: 38.1-48.0 mgFe/kg, 10.2-15.9 mgFe/kg AND 3.5-12.6 mgFe/kg, 37.0-50.1 mgCu/kg, 0.06-0.24 mgCu/kg and 0.01-0.03 mgCu/kg, 137.0-152.0 mgZn/kg, 0.67-0.82 mgZn/kg and 0.3-0.5 mgZn/kg, respectively. From this result, a new analytical method for the determination of heavy metal in sediment should be developed for the accurate estimation of pollution degree in sediment.

  • Nonlinear exponents and electron trap density variations were observered in ZnO-Bi2O3-MnO2 ternary ZnO varistors as a function of heat treatment temperature. Three kinds of ZnO varistor compositions were selected; i.e. 99.0 ZnO-0.5 Bi2O3-0.5 MnO2, 98.5 ZnO-1.0 Bi2O3-0.5 MnO2, and 98.0 ZnO-1.5 Bi2O3-0.5 MnO2 in mol%. Sintering was done at 1150$^{\circ}C$ for three hours, and heat treatments were done at 500$^{\circ}C$, 700$^{\circ}C$, and 900$^{\circ}C$. When heat treated at 500$^{\circ}C$, nonlinear exponents were increased regardless of the Bi2O3 amount. Increasing heat treatment temperature above 500$^{\circ}C$ resulted in lowering nonlinear exponents. Nonlinear exponents seem to be related to the 0.17 and 0.33 eV electron traps which are possibly of intrinsic origin.

  • Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of zinc amino acid complex (ZnAA) on growth performance, hematological and biochemical parameters in weanling pigs. Methods: In Exp. 1, a total of 216 Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Large White weanling pigs were assigned randomly to 6 dietary treatments. Each treatment had 6 replicates (pens) with 6 pigs each. The diets were corn-soybean meal based with supplementation of 0, 20, 40, 80, 120 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA or 40 mg Zn/kg from feed-grade zinc sulfate. The experiment lasted 42 days. In Exp. 2, a total of 180 weanling pigs were assigned randomly to 3 dietary treatments supplemented with 0, 80, or 800 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA. Results: In Exp. 1, pigs fed 40 to 80 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA had higher (p<0.05) average daily gain (ADG) than the unsupplemented group during d 0 to 14. During d 0 to 42, the pigs fed 20 to 120 mg Zn/kg from ZnAA had increased (p<0.05) ADG. Pigs fed 20 to 120 mg/kg Zn from ZnAA had lower feed:gain (p<0.05), increased the activity of serum Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase on d 14, and increased serum Zn levels on d 42 (p<0.05). In Exp. 2, pigs fed diets with 800 mg Zn/kg had increased average daily feed intake during d 15 to 28 (p<0.05) compared to the unsupplemented group. During d 0 to 28, the pigs fed supplemental Zn had increased ADG (p<0.05). On d 14 and d 28, pigs fed supplemental Zn had higher the serum alkaline phosphatase activities (p<0.05). No significant differences were observed in the hematological parameters and organ indices. Conclusion: Supplementation with 20 to 80 mg/kg Zn from ZnAA improved the growth performance in weaned pigs. The piglets can tolerate up to 800 mg/kg Zn from ZnAA with limited potential health effects.
