In this paper resistance projection weldability of Zn coated steels with post treatment has been discussed. Projection welding was performed by a condenser discharge type power source which was equipped with welding parameter monitoring system. Mechanical test results indicated that the effect of post coatings on the projection front changed showing very small very small spattering at the weld strength was negligible. However, contamination rate of the block electrode varied depending on the post treatment coatings. Test results also showed that projection height before welding should be kept to be 80-100% of the specimen thickness as far as the surface quality was taken into consideration. Based on the high speed photography, discharge condition at the beginning stage of the welding process. It was considered that the spattering reduced the weld strength slightly at the optimum heat input range.
Hot-dipped Al-Mg-Si coatings to alternate Zn and Zn alloy coatings for steel were examined on metallographic structure, corrosion resistance, sacrificial ability, formation and growth of inter-metallic compounds, and mechanical properties. Near the eutectic composition of quasi-binary system of Al-$Mg_2Si$, very fine eutectic structure of ${\alpha}$-Al and $Mg_2Si$ was obtained and it showed excellent corrosion resistivity and sacrificial ability for a steel in sodium chloride solutions. Formation and growth of Al-Fe inter-metallic compounds at the interface of substrate steel and coated layer was suppressed by addition of Si. The inter-metallic compounds layer was usually brittle, however, the coating layer did not peel off as long as the thickness of the inter-metallic compounds layer was small enough. During sacrificial protection of a steel, amount of hydrogen into the steel was more than ten times smaller than that of Zn coated steel, suggesting to prevent hydrogen embrittlement. Al-Mg-Si coating is expected to apply for several kinds of high strength steels.
Many surface protection methods have been developed to apply for constructional steels used under severe corrosive environment. Thermal spray coating has been known to be an attractive technique due to its relatively high coating speed. Furthermore high corrosion resistance of coated film with thermal spray is required to expand its application. Four types of coated films(DFT:300 um) such as pure zinc, pure aluminum and two Al-Zn alloy (Al:Zn=85:15 and Al:Zn=95:5) onto the carbon steel (SS401) were prepared with arc spray, and the corrosion behavior of their samples were evaluated by electrochemical method in this study. Pure aluminum sample showed high corrosion resistance behavior exposed to sea water solution and pure zinc and alloy (Al:Zn=95:5) samples followed pure aluminum sample. The other alloy(Al:Zn=85:15) so called galvalume coated onto the carbon steel ranks the 4th corrosion resistance in this study. The results of porosity ratio of those samples by observation are well matched with the electrochemical data.
Atmospheric corrosion behaviors of Zn, Zn-5%Al and Zn-55%A l coated steels have been investigated under cyclic wet-dry environments containing chloride ions. The wet-dry cycle was carried out by alternate exposure to immersion in 0.5 M (or 0.05 M) NaCl solutions and drying at $25^{\circ}C$ and 60 %RH. The polarization resistance $R_p$ and solution resistance $R_s$ were monitored by AC impedance technique. From the obtained $1/R_p$ and $1/R_s$ values, the corrosion rate of the coatings and the Time of Wetness (TOW) were estimated, respectively. Effects of chloride ions and TOW on the corrosion rates of Zn, Zn-5%Al, Zn-55%Al coatings and appearance of red rust (onset of underlying steel corrosion) under wet-dry cycles are discussed on the basis of the corrosion monitoring data.
To understand effects of cooling rates of coating layer on microstructures and corrosion behaviors of hot-dip alloy coated steel sheets (Zn-5%Al-2%Mg) in a neutral aqueous condition with chloride ion, a range of experimental and analytical methods were used in this study. Results showed that a faster cooling rate during solidification decreased the fraction of primary Zn, and increased the fraction of Zn-Al phase. In addition, interlamellar spacing became refined under a faster cooling rate. These modifications of the coating structure had higher open circuit potentials (OCP) with smaller anodic and cathodic current densities in the electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization. Surface analyses after a salt spray test showed that the increase in the Zn-Al phase in the coating formed under a faster cooling rate might have contributed to the formation of simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O) and hydrotalcite (ZnAl2(OH)6Cl2·H2O) with a protective nature on the corroded outer surface, thus delaying the formation of red rust.

Zinc confers high corrosion resistance by acting as a sacrificial anode, and a zinc coating improves the appearance of steel. Chromate conversion coating (CCC) films are still one of the most efficient surface treatments for steel. Although such films can self-repair via the dissolution of Cr(VI), dissolved Cr(VI) have adverse effects on humans, and the environment. Therefore, we examined the corrosion protection property and morphology of colloidal silica conversion films as an alternative to CCC films. The corrosion behavior was investigated in 3% NaCl solution using electrochemical techniques, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, open circuit potential, and the salt spray test(SST). Corrosion was implied by the appearance of red rust on the specimen surface. In corrosion resistance at 3% NaCl solution, red rust appeared at 15-20, 55-70, and 83-98 days on Zn-electroplated steel, colloidal silica conversion-coated specimens, and CCC-coated specimens, respectively. In the salt spray test, the colloidal silica film provided better corrosion protection than CCC films, i.e., red rust appeared at 96 hours on the Zn-electroplated steel sheet, at 432 hours with the CCC films, and at 888 hours with silica conversion coating.
This is the first release of an interim report on the development of coating technology of Zn-Mg alloy layers on steel strip by EML-PVD (electromagnetic levitation - physical vapor deposition) process in an air-to-air type continuous PVD pilot plant. It intends to introduce a basic principle of the EML-PVD process together with the high speed PVD pilot plant built in Posco. Due to the agitation effect provided by the high frequency induction coil, simultaneous evaporation of Zn and Mg from a droplet could produce alloy coating layers with Mg content of 6% to 12% depending on the composition of the droplet inside the coil. For its superior corrosion resistance, Zn-Mg alloy coated steel would be a very promising material for automotive, electrical appliances, and construction applications.

Today, implementation of the defect detection in laser welding has been researched for a long time, but most studies have been made around thin plate within $1{\sim}3mm^t$. Therefore, this study was measured and analyzed light emission signals of the induced plasma in $CO_2$ laser lap welding of $6mm^t$ Zn primer-coated steel, and based on this analysis, research made an investigation into possibility of monitoring in thick plate welding. It was been analyzing the measured signals by RMS and FFT processing, as a results, we were able to confirm definite difference of two signals between humping bead and sound bead. Thus, possibility of real time monitoring in $CO_2$ laser lap welding verified experimentally.
An improvement in corrosion resistance of various types of Zn-coated steel sheets is thought to be possible with the addition of fine oxide powder to the coating. In this study the corrosion resistance of the $Al_2O_3$ dispersed Zn-Co-Cr electroplated steel sheet has been investigated and the results were as follows : The corrosion resistance of $Al_2O_3$ dispersed Zn-Co-Cr electroplated steel sheets was improved by increasing the contents of Co and Cr ions, and also $Al_2O_3$ powders in the bath because of the increased amount of Co, Cr and $Al_2O_3$ in deposits. In the $Al_2O_3$ dispersed Zn-Co-Cr electroplated steels sheet, the structure of deposits was changed from fine microstructure as observed in high Co containing deposits to coarse microstructure as in high Cr and $Al_2O_3$ containing deposits. By cold rolling of the $Al_2O_3$ dispersed Zn-Co-Cr electroplated steel sheets to about 2 percent, thr corrosion resistance was improved further.
Hot-press forming(HPF) steel can be applied successfully to auto parts because of its superior mechanical properties. However, its resistances to aqueous corrosion and the subsequent hydrogen embrittlement(HE) decrease significantly when the steel is exposed to corrosive environments. Considering that the resistances are greatly dependent on the properties of coating materials formed on the steel surface, the characteristics of the corrosion and hydrogen diffusion behaviors regarding the types of coating material should be clearly understood. Electrochemical polarization and impedance measurements reveal a higher corrosion potential and polarization resistance and a lower corrosion current of the Al-coating compared with Zn-coating. Furthermore, it was expected that the diffusion kinetics of the hydrogen atoms would be much slower in the Al-coating, and this would be due mainly to the much lower diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in the Al-coating with a face-centered cubic structure. The superior surface inhibiting effect of the Al-coating, however, is degraded by the formation of local cracks in the coated layer under severe stress conditions, and therefore further study will be necessary to gain a clearer understanding of the effect of cracks formed on the coated layer on the subsequent corrosion and hydrogen diffusion behaviors.
