  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface conditioning on the shear bond strength of zirconium-oxide ceramic to resin cement. A total of 120 disk-shaped zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks(3-TZP, Kyoritsu, Tokyo, Japan) were treated as follows: (1) no treatment; (2) sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide(Al2O3); (3) particles tribochemical silica coating(RocatecTM, 3M ESPE). Then zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks were divided into six groups(10 for each group) and bonded with resin cement(Rely X U-200, 3M ESPE). (1) No treatment / No treatment (2) No treatment / Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles (3) No treatment / Silica coating (4) Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles / Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles (5) Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles / Silica coating (6) Silica coating / Silica coating. Each group was tested in shear bond strengths by UTM. Data analysis included one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and the Tukey Honestly Significant Difference test (P=0.05). Group that bonded two silica coated specimen showed a highest bond strength(P<0.05). Two silica coated surface conditioning group and air-abrasion and silica coated surface conditioning group showed significantly difference with other groups(P<0.05). Other groups had no significantly difference each other. Within the limitation of this study, Surface conditioning with Rocatec treatment to each side of specimen provided the highest bond strength.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effect of surface conditioning on the shear bond strength of zirconium-oxide ceramic to 4 luting agents. Materials and methods: A total of 120 diskshaped zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks (3Y-TZP, Kyoritsu, Japan) were treated as follows: (1) Sandblasting with $110\;{\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles; (2) tribochemical silica coating (Rocatec) using $110\;{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ particles modified by silica; (3) no treatment. Then zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks bonded with 4 luting cements (RelyX luting (3M ESPE), Maxcem (Kerr), Nexus3 (Kerr), Rely X Unicem (3M ESPE)). Each group was tested in shear bond strengths by UTM. A 1-way analysis of variance and 2-way analysis of variance was used to analyze the data ($\alpha$ = .05). Results: RelyX unicem in combination tribochemical silica-coating produced a highest bond strength (P < .05). Air abrasion group and Rocatec treatment groups resulted in significantly higher than no conditioning group (P < .05). RelyX Luting groups showed lower bond strength than other groups. There were significant differences among groups (P < .05). Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, RelyX Unicem cement provided the highest bond strength and Rocatec treatment enhanced the bond strength.

  • PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical acceptability of all-ceramic crowns fabricated by the digital veneering method vis-$\grave{a}$-vis the traditional method. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia specimens manufactures by two different manufacturing method, conventional vs digital veneering, with three different thickness (0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm) were prepared for analysis. Color measurement was performed using a spectrophotometer for the prepared specimens. The differences in shade in relation to the build-up method were calculated by quantifying ${\Delta}E^*$ (mean color difference), with the use of color difference equations representing the distance from the measured values $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$, to the three-dimensional space of two colors. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) combined with a Tukey multiple-range test was used to analyze the data (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. In comparing means and standard deviations of $L^*$, $a^*$*, and $b^*$ color values there was no significant difference by the manufacturing method and zirconia core thickness according to a two-way ANOVA. The color differences between two manufacturing methods were in a clinically acceptable range less than or equal to 3.7 in all the specimens. CONCLUSION. Based on the results of this study, a carefully consideration is necessary while selecting upper porcelain materials, even if it is performed on a small scale. However, because the color reproducibility of the digital veneering system was within the clinically acceptable range when comparing with conventional layering system, it was possible to estimate the possibility of successful aesthetic prostheses in the latest technology.

  • Thermal batteries are primary power sources for military applications requiring high reliability, robustness and long storage life. Conventional electrodes for thermal batteries are prepared by compacting powder mixtures into pellets. Separator is composed of halide mixture, such as LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, blended with MgO to immobilize the molten salt. In order to increase the power density and energy density, the resistance of electrolyte should be reduced because the resistance of electrolyte is predominant in thermal batteries. In this study, wetting behaviors and impregnation weight of molten salts as well as the micro structures of ceramic felt were investigated to be applicable to thin electrolyte. Discharge performances of single cell with the ceramic separator impregnated by molten salt were evaluated also. Zirconia felt with high porosity and large pore outperformed alumina felt in wetting characteristics and molten salt impregnation as well as discharge performances. Based on the results of this study, ceramic felt separator impregnated with molten salt have revealed as an alternative of conventional thick MgO based separator with no conspicuous sign of thermal runaway by short circuit.

  • Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EB-PVD) is a typical technology for thermal barrier coating with Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) on aero gas turbine engine. In this study EB-PVD method was used to fabricate dense YSZ film on NiO-YSZ as a electrolyte of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). Dense YSZ films of -10 $\mu$m thickness showed nano surface structure depending on deposition temperature. Electrical conductivities of YSZ film and electric power density of the single cell were evaluated after screen- printing $LaSrCoO_3$ as a cathode.

  • ATZ was prepared by adding an alumina sol equivalent to 2wt% as $Al_2O_3$ to an aqueous slurry of alumina (AKP-30) and zirconia (TZ-2Y or TZ-0Y) in the range of 10-30ATZ, followed by gelation, calcination, and sintereing between $1450^{\circ}C{\sim}1550^{\circ}C$ for 2h. They showed excellent microstructure with alumina grains of <$0.5{\mu}m$ and>99% of the theoretical density. Fracture toughness of ${\sim}8MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ was observed around 20ATZ which was higher than $6MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ obtainable by ball-milling.

  • In solid oxide fuel cell system, yttria-stabilized zirconia is generally adopted as the electrolyte, which has high strength and superior oxygen ion conductivity, and the air electrode and the fuel electrode are attached to this. Recently, new structure of 'layered planar SOFC module' was suggested to solve the reliability problem due to the high temperature stability of a sealing agent and a binding material. In this study to materialize the air electrode in a layered planar SOFC module, the LSM ink was coated to form homogeneous electrode in the channel after the ink preparation. As the porosity control agent, PMMA or active carbon powder was adopted with use of a commercial dispersant in ethanol. The optimal amounts of both the porosity control agents and the dispersant were determined. Four (4) vol% of the dispersant for the LSM-PMMA case and 15 vol% for LSM-carbon powder showed the lowest viscosities respectively to indicate the best dispersed states of the slurries. With PMMA and carbon powder, sintered LSM ink shows the relatively homogeneous distributions of pores and with increases of the agents, the porosities increased in both cases. From this, it can be thought that the amount of the PMMA or carbon powder could be used to control the porosity of the LSM ink.

  • This study examines the role of the nano- and micro-particle ratio in dispersion stability and mechanical properties of composite resins for SLA(stereolithography) 3D printing technology. VTES(vinyltriethoxysilane)-coated $ZrO_2$ ceramic particles with different nano- and micro-particle ratios are prepared by a hydrolysis and condensation reaction and then dispersed in commercial photopolymer (High-temp) based on interpenetrating networks(IPNs). The coating characteristics of VTES-coated $ZrO_2$ particles are observed by FE-TEM and FT-IR. The rheological properties of VTES-coated $ZrO_2/High-temp$ composite solution with different particle ratios are investigated by rheometer, and the dispersion properties of the composite solution are confirmed by relaxation NMR and Turbiscan. The mechanical properties of 3D-printed objects are measured by a tensile test and nanoindenter. To investigate the aggregation and dispersion properties of VTES-coated $ZrO_2$ ceramic particles with different particle ratios, we observe the cross-sectional images of 3D printed objects using FE-SEM. The 3D printed objects of the composite solution with nano-particles of 80 % demonstrate improved mechanical characteristics.

  • YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) is used as a thermal barrier coating material for gas turbines due to its low thermal conductivity and high fracture toughness. However, the operating temperature of the gas turbine is rising according to the market demand, and the problem that the coating layer of YSZ is peeled off due to the volume change due to the phase transformation at a high temperature of 1400℃ or higher is emerging. To solve this problem, various studies have been carried out to have phase stability, low thermal conductivity, and high fracture toughness in a high temperature environment of 1400℃ or higher by doping trivalent and tetravalent oxides to YSZ. In this study, the monoclinic phase formation behavior and crystallinity were comparatively analyzed according to the total doping amount of oxides by controlling the doping amounts of Sc2O3 and Gd2O3, which are trivalent oxides, and TiO2, which are tetravalent oxides, in YSZ. Through comparative analysis of monoclinic phase formation and crystallinity, the thermal conductivity of the thermal barrier coating layer according to the amount of doping was predicted.

  • YSZ (Y2O3-stabilized zirconia)-based ceramics have excellent mechanical properties, such as high strength and wear resistance. In the application, YSZ is utilized in the bead mill, a fine-grinding process. YSZ-based parts, such as the rotor and pin, can be easily damaged by continuous application with high rpm in the bead mill process. In that case, adding WC particles improves the tribological and mechanical properties. YSZ-30 vol.% WC composite ceramics are manufactured via hot pressing under different pressures (10/30/60 MPa). The hot-pressed composite ceramics measure the physical properties, such as porosity and bulk density values. In addition, the phase formation of these composite ceramics is analyzed and discussed with those of physical properties. For the increased applied pressure of hot pressing, the tetragonality of YSZ and the crystallinity of WC are enhanced. The mechanical properties indicate an improved tendency with the increase in the applied pressure of hot pressing.
