This study was to evaluate the biaxial flexural strength of zirconia ceramics after glass-infiltration on zirconia core. The zirconia specimens were made with diameter-15mm, thickness-0.6mm using zirconia block which divided into 1) sintered group, 2) heat - treated group, 3) Glass - infiltrated group and experimented fracture strength by each 10 specimens in experimental group. The biaxial flexural test was performed at crosshead speed of 0.1${\beta}\;{\AE}$ min. The experiment result average fracture strength was shown 541.0${\beta}\acute{A}$ in sintered group and glass-infiltrated group as 662.2${\beta}\acute{A}$ river of 22.4% rise appear. Weibull coefficient sintered group is 3.462 and glass-infiltrated group improved believability about fracture strength from melting permeation processing of glass by 4.716.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the shear bond strength between various commercial zirconia coping and veneering ceramic, and to observe the failure mode. Methods: For each zirconia block (iJAM Emerald, LUXEN Smile block, ICE Zirkon transluzent), 10 rectangular specimens were layered with Cercon ceram kiss, IPS e.max ceram, ICE Zirkon ceramic according to recommended by the manufacturer. The shear bond strength tests of the veneering porcelain to zirconia were carried out until fracture by a universal testing machine. After the shear bond tests, failure modes were characterized visually, under a stereomicroscope, such as adhesive, cohesive, or mixed. Data were analyzed with One-way ANOVA followed by Scheffe's tests. Results: The shear bond strength ($mean{\pm}SD$) of zirconia-veneer ceramic were JC group $13.9{\pm}3.6MPa$; JE group $17.7{\pm}2.4MPa$; JI group $15.1{\pm}2.5MPa$; LC group $9.5{\pm}1.5MPa$; LE group $16.2{\pm}2.3MPa$; LI group $12.6{\pm}0.8MPa$; ZC group $16.0{\pm}2.3MPa$; ZE group $18.5{\pm}3.4MPa$; and ZI group $15.3{\pm}3.2MPa$. The One-way ANOVA showed a significant difference between groups (p<0.05). The failure mode in most experimental groups was mixed failure, except for the LC group, which showed adhesive failure, and JE group, LE group and ZE group showed cohesive failure. Conclusion: For IPS e.max ceram, the shear bond strength value was highest for all kinds of zirconia blocks. For ICE Zirkon transluzent, the shear bond strength value was highest for all kinds of veneering ceramics. Most of experimental group interfaces revealed mixed failure mode.
Purpose: Waste parts of zirconia blocks and powders were remained after CAD/CAM process. In order to make these residual zirconia fit for practical use, zirconia single cores were produced by drain casting process. Methods: Remained zirconia blocks were reduced to powders with zirconia mortar, and screened with 180 mesh sieve. Zirconia slip was prepared from waste parts of zirconia by ball milling. Plaster molds for forming cores by slip casting were also prepared. Formed cores were removed from mold after partial drying. Dried cores were biscuit fired at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. Biscuit fired cores were treated with tools to control the fitness and thickness. Finished cores were $2^{nd}$ fired at $1,500^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. Microstructure of cross section of core was observed by SEM. Results: When mill pot was filled with 100g of zirconia and alumina mixed powder, 300g of zirconia ball, and 180g of distilled water, the optimum slip for drain casting was obtained. Gypsum plaster for ceramic forming was more suitable then yellow stone plaster for casting process. SEM photograph showed the microstructure of fully dense with uniform grain size of zirconia and well dispersed alumina grains into the zirconia matrix. Conclusion: Zirconia single cores were produced by drain casting process. Drain casting is useful process to make these residual zirconia fit for practical use. Further study will be focused on the preparation of the bridge type cores by casting.
Purpose: The color of dental zirconia is very important in terms of aesthetics. To reproduce the color tone, a colorant is applied to zirconia to express the color tone. I would like to point out that the color, brightness, and saturation of the colorant used to express the color A3 may vary depending on the manufacturer. Methods: Each zirconia block received a total of 25 circular specimens for the experiment. The zirconia specimen was then deposited by colorant type to reproduce the color tone. Color differences and translucency were measured using a spectrophotometer. To compare and analyze the zirconia color according to the type of colorant, one-way ANOVA was used. Results: For each type of zirconia colorant, there was no statistically significant difference in translucency or b* (p>0.05). There was a statistical difference in L* and a* (p<0.05). Conclusion: The ΔE*ab (D65) value is less than 5.5 or less, and the color difference is within an acceptable range.
The fit between dental implant fixture and zirconia abutment is affected by many variables during the fabrication process by CAD/CAM program and milling working. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface compatibility and electrochemical behaviors of zirconia abutment for prosthodontics. Zirconia abutments were prepared and fabricated using zirconia block and milling machine. For stabilization of zirconia abutments, sintering was carried out at $1500^{\circ}F$ for 7 hrs. The specimens were cut and polished for gap observation. The gap between dental implant fixture and zirconia abutment was observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The hardness and corrosion resistance of zirconia abutments were observed with vickers hardness tester and potentiostat. The gap between dental implant fixture and zirconia abutment was $5{\sim}12{\mu}m$ for small gap, and $40{\sim}60{\mu}m$ for large gap. The hardness of zirconia surface was 1275.5 Hv and showed micro-machined scratch on the surface. The corrosion potentials of zirconia abutment/fixture was .290 mV and metal abutment/fixture was .280 mV, whereas $|E_{pit}-E_{corr}|$ of zirconia abutment/fixture (172 mV) was higher than that of metal abutment/fixture (150 mV). The corrosion morphology of metal abutment/fixture showed the many pit on the surface in compared with zirconia abutment/fixture.
Purpose: This study sought to identify changes in the mechanical characteristics and color of zirconia according to different sintering temperatures of the substance. Methods: This study processed some specimens of zirconia into those of $8mm(H){\times}10mm(W){\times}50mm(L){\pm}0.1$ each, and sintered them at $1450{\sim}1600^{\circ}C$ on a $50^{\circ}C-interval$ basis in order to examine how their mechanical characteristics and color are changed. Each specimen sintered using the spectral colorimetric apparatus (Easyshade, VITA, Germany) was observed for each of the color change by sintering temperature. Results: When those specimens were sintered at $1450{\sim}1600^{\circ}C$, they were 0% in absorption ratio and porosity, 20% in shrinkage ratio and $6.10g/cm^3$ in specific gravity. Absorption ration, porosity, shrinkage ratio and specific gravity all didn't vary depending on the sintering temperature. The fracture strength of the specimens was highest or 1037MPa at the sintering temperature of $1550^{\circ}C$ and a little lower or 989MPa at that of $1600^{\circ}C$. No variation in L* value was found depending on the sintering temperature of the specimens, while c* value was highest at that of $1450^{\circ}C$. In addition, h* value was highest when the specimens was sintered at $1550^{\circ}C$. Conclusion: This study could determine how zirconia shows changes in mechanical characteristics and color in accordance with different temperatures of its sintering. It is necessary to supplement the physical data of colored transparent zirconia block which is expected to be widely used in clinical practice.
