Co-firing of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Using Pore Former (기공전구체를 이용한 고체전해질 연료전지의 동시소성 연구)

  • Unite cell of soid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) that consists of a dense yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) electrolyte a porous nickel-YSZ cermet anode and a porous strontium- doped lanthanum manganate(LSM) cathod was fabricated from using pore former through co-firing technique. Initial sintering shrinkage rates of each layer were identified for fabricating SOFC. Heterogenous sintering was very effective in tailoring shrinkage rate for three layers. The powder tailoring necessary for shrinkage rate matching are as follows ; electrolyte of 60% TZ8YS/ 40% TZ8Y mixture anode of 51wt% NiO/49 wt% (70wt% TZ8YS/30 wt% UT ZrO2) mixture and cathode of 80% LSM/20% UT ZrO2 mixture . The overall sintering shrinkage rate differences of three layers using these compositions were maintained in a few percent.

Characterization of Screen Printed $YBa_2Cu_3O_x-Ag$ Thick Films (스크린 프린팅법으로 제조된 $YBa_2Cu_3O_x-Ag$ 초전도 후막의 특성)

  • YBa2Cu3Ox-Ag(YBCO-Ag) thick films were fabricated on the zirconia substrate by a screen printing method. The starting powder was a mixture of YBCO, prepared by a coprecipitation in oxalic acid, and Ag2O. The influence of heat treatment conditions on properties of thick films was investigated. It was observed that Jc of thick films was directly proportional to the orientation factor of thick films and the optimimum preparation condition was the heat treatment of thick films at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 min in O2. The improvement of Jc by the addition of Ag was considered as a result of the suppression of microcracks in the films.

A Study on Zirconia/Metal Functionally Gradient Materials by Sintering Method(II) (소결법에 의한 $ZrO_2/Metal$계 경사기능재료에 관한 연구(II))

  • To analyze the mechanical property and the residual stress in functionally gradient materials(FGMs), disctype TZP/Ni-and TZP/SUS304-FGM were hot pressed using powder metallurgy compared with directly bonded materials which were fabricated by the same method. The continuous interface and the microstructure of FGMs were characterized by EPMA, WDS, optical microscope and SEM. By fractography, the fracture behavior of FGMs was mainly influenced by the defects which originated from the fabrication process. And the defectlike cracks in the FGMs induced by the residual stress have been shown to cause failure. This fact has well corresponded to the analysis of the residual stress distribution by Finite Element Method (FEM). The residual stress generated on the interface (between each layer, and matrix and second phase, respectively) were dominantly influenced on the sintering temperature and the material constants. As a consequence, the interfacial stability and the relaxation of residual stress could be obtained through compositional gradient.

  • The properties of the powders of ZrO2-MgO system prepared by co-precipitation method using ZrOCl2.8H2O and MgCl2.6H2O as starting materials were investigated after calcination from $600^{\circ}C$ to 120$0^{\circ}C$. The crystallization temperature of amorphous ZrO2 was increased as MgO contents increased. The crystallite size of ZrO2 was increased with increasing calcination temperature. The crystallite size of tetragonal ZrO2 calcined at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr wa about 45nm, and MgO contributed effectively to promoting stability of tetragonal Zirconia.

  • 3 mol% Y2O3-doped ZrO2 powders were prepared by hydrolysis with 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 mol/ιH2O/ethanol into 0.1 mol/ι zirconium and yttrium alkoside/ethanol. Spherical monodispersed yttria-partially stabilized zirconia particles with an average diameter of about 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were prepared by hydrolysis with 0.2 mol/ιH2O/ethanol. The as-prepared powder was amorphous and with heating it transformed into cubic up to 80$0^{\circ}C$ and into tetragonal over 100$0^{\circ}C$. 3 mol% Y2O3-doped ZrO2 powders calcined over and up to 80$0^{\circ}C$ were a mixture of tetragonal and monoclinic and only tetragonal as determined by X-ray diffraction, respectively.

Fabrication of Duplex Ceramic Composites by Organic-Inorganic Solution Process

  • Duplex microstructure of zirconia and alumina has been achieved via an organic-inorganic solution technique. Zirconium 2,4-pentanedionate, aluminum nitrate and polyethylene glycol were dissolved in ethyl alcohol without any precipitation. The organicinorganic precursor gels were turned to porous powders having volume expansion through explosive, exothermic reaction during drying process. The volume expansion was caused by abrupt decomposition of the organic groups in the gels during the vigorous exothermic reaction. The volume expanded, porous powders were crystallized and densified at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. At the optimum amount of the PEG polymer, the metal cations were well dispersed in the solution and a homogeneous polymeric network was formed. The polymer content also affected on the specific surface area of the synthesized powder and the grain size of the sintered composite.

Synthesis of Mullite Powder from Alkoxides and the Properties of the Mullite-Zircocnia Composites (알콕사이드로부터 Mullite 분말의 합성 및 Mullite-Zirconia 복합체의 특성)

  • The mullite-15v/o ZrO2 composites were prepared by dispersing ZrO2-3m/o Y2O3 powders into the mullite matrix in order to improve the mechanical properties of the mullite. The densification and retention of t-ZrO2 in the matrix of synthetic mullite were also investigated. From IR spectroscopic analysis, the obtained amorphous SiO2-Al2O3 powder was observed to have Si-O-Al chemical bond in its structure which might result in the homogeneous mullite composition. The lattice parameter of the mullite powder calcined above 130$0^{\circ}C$ (a0=7.5468$\AA$) is nearly close to the value of stoichiometric mullite (71.8wt% Al2O3, a0=7.5456$\AA$). The sintering behavior, microstructure, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the mullite and mullite-15v/o ZrO2 composites have been studied. The mullite-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) ceramics with relative densities of 96% were obtained when sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$. The flexural strength and fractrue toughness of the composites sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$(calcination temperature of mullite powders ; 125$0^{\circ}C$) had maximum values of 307MPa and 2.50MPa.m1/2, respectively. The fracture toughness improvement in the mullite-ZrO2 cmoposite is assumed to be resulted from the combined effect of the stress-induced phase transformation of tetragonal ZrO2 and the crack deflection due to microcracking by the monoclinic ZrO2 formation.

  • Lanthanum/gadolinium zirconate coatings are deposited via suspension plasma spray with suspensions fabricated by a planetary mill and compared with hot-pressed samples via solid-state reaction. With increase in processing time of the planetary mill, the mean size and BET surface area change rapidly in the case of lanthanum oxide powder. By using suspensions of planetary-milled mixture between lanthanum or gadolinium oxide and nano zirconia, dense thick coatings with fully-developed pyrochlore phases are obtained. The possibilities of these SPS-prepared coatings for TBC application are also discussed.

Optimization of powder compaction parameters for the pressureless sintered ZTA (상압소결 ZTA의 분말 성형 공정 최적화)

  • The dependence of green and sintered densities of Zirconia-Toughened Alumina ($ZTA:\;Al_2O_3/\;15\;vol{%}\;ZrO_2$) on the properties of spray-dried granules was studied thoroughly to establish the optimum compaction condition leading to high reproducibility in the light of sintered density. The sphericity, mean size, degree of hollow occurrence and moisture content of spray-dried granules were largely different in between the granule containing binder and the ones with no binder. The effect of these differences in the characteristic of granules on the compaction behavior was examined in terms of the compaction pressure from 80 MPa to 120 MPa 10 MPa increment and the compaction method, i.e., uniaxial and cold isostatic pressing. This work confirmed that the reproducibility of sintered density caused by the variation of granule property could be improved by the optimization of compaction process. The variation of sintered density was controlled within 1 % deviation by compacting the granules under a relatively low pressure of 80 MPa in an uniaxial forming and subsequent cold isostatic pressing at high pressure of 500 MPa.

Redox Behavior of Chromium Oxide-Zirconia Catalyst (산화크롬-질코니아 촉매의 산화-환원거동)

  • Chromium oxide/zirconia catalysts were prepared by dry impregnation of $Zr(OH)_4$ powder with aqueous solution of $(NH_4)_2CrO_4$ followed by calcining in air. The redox behavior of prepared catalysts were investigated by reacting cumene as test material over catalysts. As a result it was found that $Cr^{6+}$ species(as chromate) on the surface of catalyst was responsible for the formation of strong acid site and the catalytic activity for the dealkylation of cumene. However, much of the $Cr^{6+}$ species was reduced to $Cr^{3+}$ species by $H_2$ formed during the catalytic reaction of cumene and the reduced $Cr^{3+}$ species was an active site for dehydrogenation of cumene to form ${\alpha}$-methyl styrene. The reduced $Cr^{3+}$ species was also reoxidized to a $Cr^{6+}$ species after treatment with $O_2$ and consequently the deoxidized catalyst exhibited catalytic activity for the dealkylation reaction of cumene.
