To investigate the change of nitric oxide(NO), copper, and zinc in serum on smoking and alcohol ingestion in young adults, this study was performed in a cross-sectional study in 127 healthy men in Korea who had HBsAg(-), HCVAb(-), and no symptomatic liver, heart, gastrointestinal, chronic diseases, and inflammatory sign(lower than 10,000 white blood cell count in CBC). At the men's entry into the study, blood samples were drawn from each subject and immediately centrifuged for analysis of NO, copper, and zinc. Each man completed a questionnaire that provided information on smoking, alcohol intake and present and past medical history NO was analyzed by HPLC(Green et al., 1982), copper and zinc by atomic absorption spectrophotometer with air-acetylene flame and total cholesterol(TC) by Spectrum EPX. Smoking(number of cigarettes per day and pack-year) and alcohol intake was grouped fertile. Copper was adjusted for age and zinc and for age and TC. NO, copper, and zinc on smoking and alcohol ingestion were analyzed in general linear models, respectively. NO, copper and zinc in serum did not show statistical differences between non-smoking and high-smoking group and no-alcohol intake and high-alcohol intake group. This study suggested that copper, zinc, and NO was not. good biological marker for early effect by smoking and alcohol intake in young adults. However, selection bias should be considered in evaluation of this result. A large prospective study will be needed in advance on usefulness of copper, zinc, and NO as a marker for risk factors and early change of atherosclerosis.

Purpose: Body adiposity is negatively correlated with hepatic iron status, and Korean pine nut oil (PNO) has been reported to reduce adiposity. Therefore, we aimed to study the effects of PNO on adiposity, hepatic mineral status, and the expression of genes and proteins involved in iron absorption. Methods: Five-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were fed a control diet containing 10% kcal from PNO (PC) or soybean oil (SBO; SC), or a high-fat diet (HFD) containing 35% kcal from lard and 10% kcal from PNO (PHFD) or SBO (SHFD). Hepatic iron, copper, and zinc content; and expression of genes and proteins related to iron absorption were measured. Results: HFD-fed mice had a higher white fat mass (2-fold; p < 0.001), lower hepatic iron content (25% lower; p < 0.001), and lower hepatic Hamp (p = 0.028) and duodenal Dcytb mRNA levels (p = 0.037) compared to the control diet-fed mice. Hepatic iron status was negatively correlated with body weight (r = -0.607, p < 0.001) and white fat mass (r = -0.745, p < 0.001). Although the PHFD group gained less body weight (18% less; p < 0.05) and white fat mass (18% less; p < 0.05) than the SHFD group, the hepatic iron status impaired by the HFD feeding did not improve. The expression of hepatic and duodenal ferroportin protein was not affected by the fat amount or the oil type. PNO-fed mice had significantly lower Slc11a2 (p = 0.022) and Slc40a1 expression (p = 0.027) compared to SBO-fed mice. However, the PC group had a higher Heph expression than the SC group (p < 0.05). The hepatic copper and zinc content did not differ between the four diet groups, but hepatic copper content adjusted by body weight was significantly lower in the HFD-fed mice compared to the control diet-fed mice. Conclusion: HFD-induced obesity decreased hepatic iron storage by affecting the regulation of genes related to iron absorption; however, the 18% less white fat mass in the PHFD group was not enough to improve the iron status compared to the SHFD group. The hepatic copper and zinc status was not altered by the fat amount or the oil type.
The somata and boutons of the zinc-containing neurons in the spinal cord of the rats were labeled by intraperitoneal injection of sodium selenite and silver amplification. The labeled somata of the neurons were located in laminae V, VI, VII and X of the gray matter. The zinc selenium reaction products were retrogradely transported and precipitated into somata of the neuron with survival 8 hours. This observation suggest that all or part of the spinal cord zinc-containing neurons are interneurons. At survival 1 hour, the loaded axonal boutons with zinc precipitates of zinc-containing neurons were distributed in the gray matter and in the processes of lateral and ventral funiculi of the white matter. In particular, AMG stained boutons with huge form were appeared in the lamina IX. Ultrastructurally, the zinc precipitates were located in the cytoplasmic lysosomes or the vesicle within boutons of the zinc-containing neuron in accordance with survival times.

Replacing the existing illumination with solid-state lighting devices, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are expected to reduce energy consumption and environmental pollution as they provide better efficiency and longer lifetimes. Currently, white light emitting diodes are composed of UV or blue LED with down-converting materials such as highly luminescent phosphors White light-emitting diodes (LED) were fabricated with multi-shell nanocrystal quantum dots for enhanced luminance and improved stability over time. Multi-shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized through one pot process by using the Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) method. As prepared, the multi-shell QD has cubic lattice of zinc-blend structure with semi-spherical shape with quantum yield of higher than 60 % in solution. Further, highly fluorescent multi-shell QD was deposited on the blue LED, which resulted in QD-based white LED with high luminance with excellent color rendering properties.
(Pyridine)(tetrahydroborato)zinc complex, $[Zn(BH_4)_2(py)]$, as a stable white solid, was prepared quantitatively by complexation of an equimolar amount of zinc tetrahydroborate and pyridine at room temperature. This reagent can easily reduce variety of carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes, ketones, acyloins, α-diketones and a, β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols in good to excellent yields. Reduction reactions were performed in ether or THF at room temperature or under reflux conditions. In addition, the chemoselective reduction of aldehydes over ketones was accomplished successfully with this reducing agent.
The authors have studied the marginal leakage of various dental cements; Fynal cement (Caulk), Zinc cement (S.S. White) Carbo cement (Shofu, Poly-carboxylate cement), EBA cement (Opotow alumina cement), Propac (G-C's zinc oxide euginol cement), and Super cement (Shofu oxyphosphate zinc cement), by means of penetration of 2% methylene blue solution between orden crown restorations and human teeth in 150 cases. The result revealed as follow
1. None of the cements tested were free from dye penetration.
2. There was a wide difference in dye penetration among the trade brands of dental cement when immersed in dye solution before setting of cements.
3. EBA cement and Carbo cement showed comparatively low grade of dye penetration at the restorative margins.

White emission is important for applying organic EL devices to full-color flat panel display and backlight for liquid crystal display. In order to obtain white emission, the use of a light-emitting material which shows the white emission by itself is advantageous for these applications because of its high reliability and productivity. A chelate-metal complex such as zinc bis(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazolate) ($Zn(BTZ)_{2}$ was known to emit white light with a broad electroluminescence. In this study, the electroluminescent characteristics of $Be(BTZ)_{2}$ and $Mg(BTZ)_{2}$, as well as $Zn(BTS)_2$ were investigated using organic electroluminescent devices with the structure of ITO/TPD/ $Be(BTZ)_{2}$, $Mg(BTZ)_{2}$, or $Zn(BTZ)_{2}/Al$. It was found that the device containing $Be(BTZ)_{2}$ showed the highest power efficiency.
High dietary phytate is a known factor in reducing the bioavailability of minerals such as zinc and calcium which are already chronically low in the Korean diet. This study was conducted to develop methods for reducing dietary phytate through the addition of phytate and/or the substitution of high phytate foods with low phytate foods. Ten units of phytase per 100g of uncooked brown rice were added to brown rice gruel resulted in a 16.2% phytate reduction after a 3-hour incubation period; an 18.2% reduction was produced after a 6-hour incubation period. The addition of ten units of phytase per 100g of soybean curd residue at 45$^{\circ}C$, followed by refrigeration for 3 hours, resulted in a 19.1% phytate reduction. The addition of 20 units of phytase under the same conditions reduced phytate content by 24.6%. In this study, two typical Korean meals consisting of legumes and unrefined cereals were prepared as high phytate meals; these were then compared to low phytate meals that had been prepared by treating the foods with phytase and substituting unrefined with refined cereals (i.e., brown rice with white rice, whole wheat bread with white bread). The phytate content of the two high phytate meals was 1878.2mg and 1811.8mg. After the addition of phytase and the food substitution, the phytate content of the low phytate meals was reduced to 788.9mg and 606.0mg. The phytate to zinc molar ratio of high phytate diets was 22.4 and 21.3 and 9.4 and 7.9 for the low phytate meals. These results indicate that the nutritional status of Koreans in terms zinc and other minerals can be improved by phytate reduction. This can be accomplished through the change of milling process for some cereals and/or the enzyme treatment of some high phytate food items.
Green phosphors $(Zn_{1-a-b}M_aM^{\prime}_b)_xGa_yS_{x+3y/2}:Eu^{2+}$ (M, M' = alkali earth ions) with x = 2 and y = 2-5 were prepared, starting from ZnO, MgO, $SrCO_3$, $Ga_2O_3$, $Eu_2O_3$, and S with a flux $NH_4F$ using a conventional solidstate reaction. A phosphor with the composition of $(Zn_{0.6}Sr_{0.3}Mg_{0.1})_2Ga_2S_5:Eu^{2+}$ produced the strongest luminescence at a 460-nm excitation. The observed XRD patterns indicated that the optimized phosphor consisted of two components: zinc thiogallate and zinc sulfide. The characteristic green luminescence of the $ZnS:Eu^{2+}$ component on excitation at 460 nm was attributed to the donor-acceptor ($D_{ZnGa_2S_4}-A_{ZnS}$) recombination in the hybrid boundary. The optimized green phosphor converted 17.9% of the absorbed blue light into luminescence. For the fabrication of light-emitting diode (LED), the optimized phosphor was coated with MgO using magnesium nitrate to overcome their weakness against moisture. The MgO-coated green phosphor was fabricated with a blue GaN LED, and the chromaticity index of the phosphor-cast LED (pc-LED) was investigated as a function of the wt % of the optimized phosphor. White LEDs were fabricated by pasting the optimized green (G) and the red (R) phosphors, and the commercial yellow (Y) phosphor on the blue chips. The three-band pc-WLED resulted in improved color rendering index (CRI) and corrected color temperature (CCT), compared with those of the two-band pc-WLED.

Composition which was used as a white smoke grenade consists of Aluminium(Al), Hexachloroethane(HCE) and Zinc Oxide(ZnO), etc. there is a possibility of misfire due to long term storage and there are very few reports on the mechanism behind misfire. In this study, an experimental method known as accelerated degradation testing is used to investigate the chemical mechanism resulting in misfire. The mechanism of chemical change during long term storage was analyzed with XRD and FT-IR. Analysis results suggest that a part of HCE consisting of the white smoke grenade disappeared and the other part was combined into $ZnCl_2$, $AlCl_3$, as a recycled intermediate product under closed system.
