  • Using tracer technique of Zn-65, a pot experiment has been carried out in order to evaluate the efficiency of zinc fertilization on two paddy soils; an acidic from Kimpo and an alkaline from Yeongweol. The sources of zinc were zinc sulfate, zinc carbonate, zinc chloride and zinc oxide. Two rates of zinc were applied to the soils and control treatment was also included for this study. The methods of zinc application were uniform mixing throughout the soil, applying to the soil surface and irrigation water, and root dipping with zinc oxide at transplanting. In general, Yeongweol soil had higher efficiency of zinc fertilizers than Kimpo soil. The results showed that zinc fertilizer application should be required to improve the rice growing conditions in Yeongweol soil especially at early stage of growth after transplanting. As to the application method of zinc fertilizers, mixing treatment appeared to be most superior to any other methods in both soils. In addition, it is found that root dipping in the zinc oxide suspension would be a rather effective method of zinc application. In aspect of fertilizer efficiency there was no superiority or inferiority among the zinc sources used in this experiment.

  • The effects of the composition and additives on the blackening and deposition rate of electroless Ni-Zn plating have been examined. Hydrazine resulted in lower sheet resistance of the deposit than sodium hypophosphite. Zinc concentration more than 15 wt% and small amount of ammonium sulfate in the deposits were needed in obtaining Ni-Zn deposit with a black color. An optimum condition was obtained for the black Ni-Zn deposit at an appreciable deposition rate.

  • Two inorganic (zinc sulfate and zinc oxide) and three organic (zinc acetate, zinc-methionine, and zinc-lysine) zinc sources were evaluated for their effects on the performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chicks. The birds were randomly assigned to one control (non-supplemented) and 15 treatment (supplemented) groups consisting of four replicates of 10 chicks each in a $5{\times}3$ factorial arrangement of treatments (five zinc sources and three supplemental zinc levels). Birds were kept in floor pens in a temperature-controlled room from 1 to 42 d of age and fed a non-supplemented basal diet (control) or the basal diet supplemented with 40, 80 or 120 mg/kg of Zn as mentioned sources. Dietary zinc source had considerable effect on feed intake in all experimental periods. Increasing Zn level from 80 to 120 mg/kg decreased the average feed intake in the growth stage (p<0.01) and also in the entire experimental period (p<0.001). Similarly, the average daily gain during the entire trial period was affected by the type of Zn source (p<0.001) and supplemental level (p<0.01). One degree of freedom contrast comparisons showed that the inclusion of organic zinc sources into the diets caused significant increases in feed intake and body gain when compared with inorganic counterparts. Except in wk 1, dietary supplementation with organic sources improved (p<0.05) feed conversion ratio; FCR values were not affected by dietary Zn source or supplementation level. Breast meat yield increased with supplemental levels of organic Zn sources; however, other carcass parameters were not affected by dietary Zn source. On the other hand, organic versus inorganic zinc supplementation caused a significant increase in liver, breast and carcass weight percentages. The present findings suggest that supplemental levels of organic Zn compounds had beneficial effects on broiler performance, and Zn requirements can be reduced using these feed supplements in poultry rations.

  • Zinc white is mainly used as a mild astringent, protectant. and has weak antiseptic action. It is well known that the yield of zinc white produced is greatly affected by the syn thetic conditions such as the reactant concentration, reaction temperature, washing water temperature, mole ratio of reactants, and drying temperature, calcination temperature, etc. The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal synthesis conditions of zinc white produced. A randomized complete block design suggested by G.E.P. Box and K.B. Wilson was applied for this purpose. Basic zinc carbonate was prepared by reacting zinc sulfate and sod. carbonate solution in this study. Zinc white comes when prepared by calcination of basic zinc carbonate. The optimum synthesis conditions of zinc white obtained from this study is as follows: 1) The reacting temperature range is: 92-100$^{\circ}C$, 2) The concentration of reactant solution is 23.6-27%, 3) The optimum mole-ratio: [ZnSO4]/[Na2CO3] is 1.74~1.96, 4) The washing water temperature is 36$^{\circ}C$, 5) The drying temperature range is 68-74$^{\circ}C$, 6) The calcination temperature is 600$^{\circ}C$. The outcome of DSC indicated a desolvation of basic zinc carbonate occurred at about 133.3$^{\circ}C$. The dehydration of the compound ceased at about 267.9$^{\circ}C$ and the decarboxylation ceased at about 379.9$^{\circ}C$. The physical and chemical properties of zinc white as medicine were studied by use of Volume Test.

  • The ultrafiltration(UF) and reverse osmosis(RO) tests for a model metal plating wastewater prepared with zinc sulfate, showed the zinc ion rejection coefficient of over 99% and the permeate flux of $1.49 {\times} 10^{-3}cm/sec$ at pH = 8.3. The effect of cyanide on the zinc removal was investigated. When the amount of cyanide addition was same the zinc content, the zinc was removed over 99% and the cyanide was excluded about 93%. The addition of the surfactants such a LAS-Na and EDTA-Na was found to reduce the permeate flux down to $0.76 {\times} 10^{-3}cm/sec$ at the RO membrane.

  • A strain degrading phthalate ester was isolated from a sludge of Taegu area and identified as a strain of Klebsiella. The optimum culture conditions for the protocatechuate dioxygenase production were also investigated. This strain produced the enzyme in question under the shaking cultivation at $30^{\circ}C$for the 48 hrs in the medium containing 0.1% protocatechuate as the sole carbon source, 0.1% ammonium sulfate and 0.1% yeast extract as the nitrogen source and mineral salt mixture of magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride, calcium chloride, ferric chloride, manganese sulfate, zinc sulfate and cupric sulfate. This enzyme was intracellularl j localized and probably linked to cell membrane, and induced by protocatechuate.

  • Zinc (Zn) is a micromineral and functions as a cofactor of many enzymes and its deficiency induces retardation of growth and dysfunction of the immune system in animals. This study was conducted to determine lipogenic activity of Zn in bovine intramuscular adipocytes. Preadipocytes were isolated from intramuscular fat depots of 26 month old Korean (Hanwoo) steers and cultured in media containing Zn. At confluence, the cells were treated with insulin, dexamethasone, and 1-methyl-3-isobutyl-xanthine to induce differentiation (accumulation of lipid droplets in cells). The sources of Zn were zinc chloride (${ZnCl}_2$) and zinc sulfate (${ZnSO}_4$), and the final concentrations of both Zn sources were 0, 5, 25, 50 and 100 ${\mu}$M. Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH) activity, an index of adipocyte differentiation, was increased as the concentration of Zn in media increased showing the highest activity (25.74 ng/min/mg protein) at 25 ${\mu}$M of ${ZnSO}_4$. Supplementation of Zn during differentiation of bovine intramuscular adipocytes tended to decrease the production of nitric oxide (NO). Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 2(PPAR$\gamma$2) gene expression was increased 10 days after differentiation induction. The current results indicate that Zn has a strong lipogenic activity in cultured bovine intramuscular adipocytes with remarkable suppression of NO production.

  • A field experiment has been carried out to evaluate the residual effect of zinc fertilizers by rice plant grown under flooded conditions in the field. The results obtained are summarized as fellows ; Residual effect of zinc fertilizers on yields of rough and hulled grains showed slight increases. Effect of zinc application methods on yields of the grains were shown that zinc mixed treatment could be more effectively utilized than treatment of zinc on the soil surface. In case of levels of zinc application, 5 kg zinc per hectare represented high yields of the grains than those obtained from 10kg and 20kg zinc placement per hectare respectively. Regarding the form of zinc fertilizers, the urea-zinc complex showed less effective on yields of the grains than did the zinc sulfate. This phenomenon was consistent with the previous result. Yields of total zinc in rice plant grown on the rice straw added soils (Treatment No. 2 and 8) and the urea-zinc complex treated soil were increased markedly as compared to those data obtained from the previous year. The percentage of zinc derived from fertilizer decreased largely as compared to that of the first year crop. The yield of fertilizer zinc in rice plant decreased slightly in the most zinc treatments but in the case of treatments of zinc mixed with the straw added soil and the urea-zinc complex increased reversely as compared to the previous results. The mixed application of zinc with soil showed higher yield of fertilizer zinc than the soil surface placement. Approximately from 4.6 to 24.3 per cent of zinc taken up by rice plants were derived from the fertilizer zinc. Zinc fertilizer use efficiency ranged from 0.213 to 0.584 per cent when 5 kg zinc per hectare applied.

  • Effects of pH and supporting salts on the characteristics of electrogalvanzied coating in sulfate bath are investigated. The fine grain size is obtained and the whiteness with the amount of supporting salts or pH increased at more than current density of 100A/$dm^2$<\TEX>, With supporting salts increased, the electro-conductivity of the bulk solution increases and the cell voltage decreases, while the width of the cathode burned edge gets wider because it seems that the increased overpotential the vicinity of cathode causes the decreases, of limiting current density. When the amount of supporting salts or pH of sulfate bath decreases, the zinc crystals have preferred orientation (001) planes. However when the amount of supporting salts or pH increase, the crystal texture has less (001) planes and gets to have random crystal planes.
