  • This research was carried out to investigate the corrosion prevention effect in the water distribution system by galvanized zinc-brass pipe which is using potential between brass and zinc. As a result of this study, pH and conductivity of influent were constant in spite of its installation, and it was difficult to estimate the effect of the installation with temporary increased and reduced concentration of Zn and Fe ions, respectively. However, since the corrosion rate of the steel coupon with galvanized zinc-brass pipe was relatively low, it has an effect of inhibiting corrosion.

  • Boron-doped ZnO:Al films were deposited by rf magnetron sputtering. The structural and optical property variations of the films with the boron amounts were studied. ZnO nanorods were grown on $SiO_2/Si$ wafers and glass by a hydrothermal method. ~50 nm-thick boron-doped ZnO:Al films were deposited on the substrates as seed layers. The mixed solution of zinc nitrate hexahydrate and hexamethylenetetramine in DI water was used as a precursor for ZnO nanorods. The concentration of zinc nitrate hexahydrate and that of hexamethylenetetramine were 0.05 mol, respectively. ZnO nanorods were grown at $90^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. X-ray diffraction was conducted to observe the crystallinity of ZnO nanorods. A field emission scanning electron microscope was employed to study the morphology of nanorods. Optical transmittance was measured by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and photoluminescence was carried out with 266 nm light. The ZnO nanorods grown on the 0.5 wt% boron-doped ZnO seed layer showed the best crystallinity.

  • Indium-nitrogen co-doped zinc oxide thin films (INZO) were prepared on glass substrates in the atmosphere by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The aqueous solution of zinc acetate, ammonium acetate and different indium sources: indium (III) chloride and indium (III) nitrate were used as the precursors. After film deposition, different anneal temperature treatment as 350, 450, $550^{\circ}C$ were applied. Electrical properties as concentration and mobility were characterized by Hall measurement. The surface morphology and crystalline quality were characterized by SEM and XRD. With the activation energy analysis for both films, the concentration variation of the films at different heat treatment temperature was realized. Donors correspond to zinc related states dominate the conduction mechanism for these INZO films after $550^{\circ}C$ high temperature heat treatment process.

  • Seedling growth test is used to assess toxicity of nanoparticles (NPs). This study evaluates toxicity of zinc, zinc oxide NPs on Cucumis sativus using two methods; phytagel and filter paper. From the comparison, phytagel method prevents precipitation of water insoluble NPS. Seeding length was negatively related to the exposed concentration of Zn, ZnO NPs in filter method. The median effective concentrations (EC50) for C. sativus exposed to Zn, ZnO NPs were estimated about 598, 600 mg/L in filter method. Bioaccumulation increased with the exposed concentration of Zn, ZnO NPs in only filter method. The results showed that the filter paper method was much better protocol than phytagel method.

  • The cell permeability and cytotoxic effects of different-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles were investigated using a human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line called Caco-2. Morphological observation by scanning electron microscopy revealed that three zinc oxides with different mean particle sizes (ZnO-1, 20 nm; ZnO-2, 90~200 nm; ZnO-3, $1\sim5\;{\mu}m$) tended to aggregate, particularly in the case of ZnO-1. When cytotoxicities of all three sizes of zinc oxide particles were measured at concentration ranges of $1\sim1000\;{\mu}g$/mL, significant decreases in cell viability were observed at concentrations of $50\;{\mu}g$/mL and higher. Among the three zinc oxides, ZnO-1 showed the lowest viability at $50\;{\mu}g$/mL in Caco-2 cells, followed by ZnO-2 and ZnO-3. The permeate concentration of ZnO-1 from the apical to the basolateral side in the Caco-2 model system after four hours was about three-fold higher than that of either ZnO-2 or ZnO-3. These results demonstrated that ZnO-1, with a 20 nm mean particle size, had poorer viability and better permeability in Caco-2 cells than ZnO-2 and ZnO-3.

  • Characteristics on the sulfuric acid leaching of zinc and manganese from the spent zinc-carbon battery powders obtained by cushing and magnetic separation, were investigated with the variation of sulfuric acid concentration, reaction temperature, stir-ring speed and solid/liquid ratio. The sample powders were composed of Zn metal, ZnO, $MnO_2$ and $Mn_2$$O_3$. and it was found that the selective leaching of zinc was difficult in this system. At the condition of S/L ratio 1:10, IM H$_2$$SO_4$, $60^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm, leaching rate of Zn and Mn are 92% and 35% respectively. The concentration of Zn and Mn in the leaching solution are 19.5 g/l, 7.8 g/l and pH of that solution is 0.75. It was confirmed at reducing agent should be added to increase e leaching rate of manganese with sulfuric acid.

  • The present study was designed to demonstrate ionic zinc in the rat nasal mucosa by means of zinc selenium autometallography ($ZnSe^{AMG}$). Rats were given sodium selenide either intraperitoneally (i.p) or intranasally (i.n). Prior to the i.n. administration the rats were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (30 mg/kg, i.p.). A thin plastic tube coupled to a Hamilton syringe was then inserted into the right nostril and $10{\mu}l$ of the solution was instilled. For the i.p. administration non-anesthetized rats were given $100{\mu}l$ of the sodium selenide solution (10 mg/kg). Control rats were instilled with saline. After 2 hrs survival, the rats were anaesthetized and transcardially perfused with 3% glutaraldehyde. The olfactory area was removed and put into same fixative. The nose was then sectioned ($30{\mu}m$) horizontally, autometallography (AMG) was performed according to Danscher et al. (1997). After silver enhancement, fine AMG grains were scattered in the whole length of the olfactory epithelium containing olfactory receptor neurons, sustentacular and basal cells. However, much higher concentration of the AMG grains occupied near the surface and in the basal region of the olfactory epithelium. Both groups of i.p. and i.n. administration showed almost same level in the concentration of the AMG grains. In i.n. group, few AMG grains were also found in olfactory nerves of the lamina propria, suggesting zinc transport into the olfactory bulb via olfactory axons. At the electron microscopic level, the AMG grains were most entirely found in the supporting cells of the olfactory epithelium, and they were mostly localized in lysosome-like organelles. The i.n. group showed various signs of tissue damage of the olfactory mucosa, where dense concentration of AMG grains were localized at crystalloid structures. The present study demonstrated dense population of ionic zinc in the rat olfactory epithelium. zinc may play a role in the olfactory functioin and in the pathogenesis of the neurodegerative disorders affecting nose.

  • Zn-AC and Zn-H-AC series prepared from non- and surface-modified activated carbon were investigated in terms of their hydrogen production capacity. An increase in the concentration of the zinc salts used with these series was shown to lead to a decrease in the values of the surface textural properties. The existence of zinc complexes on the surface was confirmed from an analysis of XRD data. The SEM micrographs of the two different sample types showed that the transformation of the carbon surface with an acid pre-treatment significantly change the metal contents on the surfaces of the carbon matrix. The EDX spectra indicated that all of the samples were richer in the amount of oxygen and zinc compared to any other elements. The results obtained using the Boehm's titration method showed that the positive introduction of the acidic groups on the carbon surfaces with the acid treatment is correlated with an increase in the amounts of zinc complexes with variation of the acidic groups. In terms of the hydrogen production performance, the volume fractions of the Zn-H-AC series were found to produce higher amounts than the Zn-AC series as a function of the metal contents considering the effects of the acid treatment.

  • Optical properties of $Cd_{1-x}Zn_{x}S$ films deposited by :chemical bath deposition(CBD), which is a very attractive method for low-cost and large-area solar cells, are presented, Especially, in order to control more effectively the zinc component of the films, zinc acetate, which used as the zinc source, mixed in reaction solution after preheating and the pH of the reaction solution decreased with increasing the concentration of zinc acetate. The films prepared after preheating and pH control had larger zinc component and higher optical band gap. As the more zinc substituted for Cd in the films, the optical transmittance improved, while the absorption edge shifts to a shorter wavelength and the optical band gap increased. The photo conductivity of the films was larger than the dark conductivity, while the ratio of those increased with increasing the mole ratio of zinc acetate.

  • We used isopropanol which has low boiling point to prepare thin films at low temperature and changed mole concentration of zinc acetate from 0.3 to 1.3 mol/l. The structural, optical and electrical properties of ZnO thin films with Zn content were investigated. ZnO thin films highly oriented along the c-axis were obtained at Zn concentration of 0.7 mol/l. ZnO thin films with Zn concentration of 0.7 mol/l showed a homogeneous surface layer of nano structure. The transmittance of ZnO thin films by UV-vis. measurement was about 87% under the Zn concentration of 0.7 mol/l, but rapidly decreased over the 1.0 mol/l. The optical band gap energy was obtained from 3.07 to 3.22 eV which is very close to the band gap of bulk ZnO (3.2 eV). The electrical resistivity of ZnO thin films was about 150 $\Omega$-cm that shows little difference with Zn concentration. I-V curves of ZnO thin films exhibited typical ohmic contact properties.
