  • Isomers based on the RS and EZ geometrical isomerism of the neutral, deprotonated species of HMPAO and their complexes with zinc(Ⅱ) ion have been investigated by semiempirical AM1 optimization method. The Hartree-Fock energies on AM1 geometries o f HMPAO species were calculated with HF/6-31G* methods. Twenty-two isomers of the neutral and twenty isomers of the deprotonated species of HMPAO have been found. The presence of four EE-series isomers of both zinc(Ⅱ) complexes with the neutral and deprotonated HMPAO have been expected and the SREE typical isomer of both types of complexes is the most stable isomer. Energies of complexation of zinc(Ⅱ)/HMPAO isomers with AM1 geometries were calculated by HF/ 6-31G*method. Due to the complexations with zinc(Ⅱ), the structural reorganizations of some isomers of the neutral HMPAO have been occurred. The optimized geometrical parameters of the related conformations have been discussed in terms of their stabilities and existences.

  • The zinc(II) complex, $Zn(NCS)_2(C_3H_4N_2S)_2$, I, has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complex I crystallizes in the triclinic system, $P\bar{1}$ space group with a = 7.587(1), b = 8.815(1), $c=12.432(2){\AA}$, ${\alpha}=75.584(8)$, ${\beta}=83.533(9)$, ${\gamma}=68.686(8)^{\circ}$, $V=750.0(2){\AA}^3$, Z = 2, $R_1=0.036$ and ${\omega}R_2=0.101$. The central Zn(II) atom has a tetrahedral coordination geometry, with the heterocyclic nitrogen atoms of 2-aminothiazole ligands and the nitrogen atoms of isothiocyanate ligands. The crystal structure is stabilized by one-dimensional networks of the intermolecular $N-H{\cdots}S$ hydrogen bonds between the amino group of 2-aminothiazole ligands and the sulfur atom of isothiocyanate ligands. Based on the results of thermal analysis, the thermal decomposition reaction of complex I was analyzed to have three distinctive stages such as the loss of 2-aminothiazole, the decomposition of isothiocyanate and the formation of metal oxide.

  • The room temperature fluorescence induction of chloroplasts was utilized as a probe to locate the site of inhibition by mercury, copper and zinc on PS II by mercury. Inhibitory effect of Hg2+ on electron transport activity was notable as compared with Cu2+ and Zn2+. At concentrations of HgCl2 over 50 $\mu$M, activities of PS II and whole-chain electron transport decreased more than 70%, while that of PS I decreased about 10~30%. This suggests that PS II is more susceptible to Hg2+ than PS I is. In the presence of diphenylcarbazide (DPC), 50 $\mu$M HgCl2 inhibited the reduction of dichlorophenolindophenol (DCPIP) about 50%. Addition of heavy metals induced marked decrease in maximal variable fluorescence/initial fluorescence [(Fv)m/Fo], but no changes in Fo. With various concentrations of heavy metals, changes of chlorophyll a fluorescence emitted by PS II showed gradual decrease in photochemical quenching (qQ), which indicates an increase in reduced state of electron acceptor, QA. Especially, the addition of HgCl2 caused a notable decrease of qQ. In the presence of 50 $\mu$M CuCl2, energy-depended quenching (qE) was completely reduced, whereas in the presence of 50 $\mu$M CuCl2 and ZnCl2 it was still remained. The above results are discussed on the effects of mercury in relation to water-splitting system and plastoquinone (PQ) shuttle system.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibitory effect of heavy metals [Cd(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II)] on the growth of Rhodobacter species (Rhodobacter blasticus, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and Rhodobacter capsulatus) and their potential use for Cd(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) bioremoval from liquid media. The presence of toxic heavy metals prolonged the lag phase in growth and reduced biomass growth for all three Rhodobacter species at concentrations of Cd, Ni, and Zn above 10 mg/L. However, all three Rhodobacter species also had a relatively high specific growth rate against each toxic heavy metal stress test for concentrations below 20 mg/L and possessed a potential bioaccumulation ability. The removal efficiency by all strains was highest for Cd(II), followed by Ni(II), and lowest for Zn(II), with the removal efficiency of Cd(II) by Rhodobacter species being 66% or more. Among the three strains, R. blasticus showed a higher removal efficiency of Cd(II) and Ni(II) than R. capsulatus and R. sphaeroides. Results also suggest that the bio-removal processes of toxic heavy metal ions by Rhodobacter species involve both bioaccumulation (intracellular uptake) and biosorption (surface binding).

  • Zinc occurs in the nature as sulfide, carbonate, silicate, and oxide. In natural water, zinc is generally in the form of the divalent cation $Zn^{2+}$ as well as in the form of fairly weakly bound complexes. Human activities introduce zinc ion to the hydrosphere in many ways. The zinc complexes in the aqueous environment are accumulated not only in aquatic organisms but also in human body ultimately through physico-chemical and/or biological processes. (omitted)

  • ZnSe, as a II-VI compound semiconductor which has a wide band gap in the visible region is applicable to the various fields such as laser diode, display and solar cell. By using the electrochemical deposition method, ZnSe thin film was synthesized on the ITO glass substrate. The synthesis of ZnSe grains and their structure having zinc blende shape were verified through the analysis of XRD and SEM. UV spectrophotometric method determined the band gap as the value of 2.76 eV. Applying the DFT (Density Functional Theory) in the molecular dynamics, the band structure of ZnSe grains was analyzed. For ZnSe grains with zinc blende structure, the band structure and its density of state were simulated using LDA (Local Density Approximation), PBE (Perdew Burke Ernzerhof), and B3LYP (Becke, 3-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr) functionals. Among the calculations of energy band gap upon each functional, the simulated one of 2.65 eV based on the B3LYP functional was mostly near by the experimental measurement.

  • In this paper, we report the coordination state and structure of $Zn(cyclam)Cl_{2})$ complex that was studied by the Raman spectrum and conductivity method. The complex of zinc(II) ion with 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane(cyclam) ligand is formed in aqueous solution. According to the Raman spectrum of $Zn(cyclam)Cl_{2})$ complex, $H_{2}O$ molecule and $Cl^{-}$ ion compete for the trans coordination site of zinc(II) ion. We also have investigated the competition effect of $H_{2}O$ molecule and $Cl^{-}$ ion by the conductivity method. On addition of 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane(cyclam) ligand to the aqueous $ZnCl_{2}$ solution, 2: 1 electrolyte is changed to 1:1 electrolyte. We suggest the possibility of elimination of heavy metal because of the affinity effect of macrocyclic polyamine(1,4,8.11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) for the heavy metal,.

  • Single crystal EPR and optical studies of a mixed ligand zinc(II) complex doped with VO(II) ion is carried out to establish the structural properties. The angular variation of vanadyl hyperfine lines indicates a single site, with spin Hamiltonian parameters as: $g_{xx}=1.985$, $g_{yy}=1.979$, $g_{zz}=1.943$; $A_{xx}=8.71$, $A_{yy}=6.41$ and $A_{zz}=17.80$ mT. By comparing the direction cosines of principal g and A values with the direction cosines of metalligand bonds, it has been confirmed that the vanadyl ion has entered the lattice interstitially. The exact interstitial position of VO(II) in host lattice has been calculated using the fractional coordinates of atoms in the host lattice out of many assumptions. The EPR and optical data have been confirmed to obtain various bonding parameters, from which the nature of the bonding in the complex is discussed. FT-IR confirms the formation of structure of host lattice.
