The leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of see-through type gas labyrinth seals are determined using a two-control-volume-model analysis with Moody's wall-friction-factor formula which is defined with a large range of Reynolds number and relative roughness. Jet flow theory are used for the calculation of the recirculation velocity in the cavity. For the reaction force from the labyrinth seal, linearized zeroth-order and the first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion about a centered position. The leakage and rotordynamic coefficient results of the present analysis are compared with Scharrer's theoretical analysis using Blasius' wall-friction-factor formula and Pelletti's experimental results. The comparison shows that the present analysis using Moody's wall-friction-factor formula and Scharrer's theoretical analysis using Blasius' wall-friction-factor formula give the same results for a smooth seal surface and the range of Reynolds number less than $10^5$.
The reactivity of a range of volatile organic compounds with differing functional groups observed over 0.5% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst. In general, the reactivity pattern observed was alcohols > aromatics > ketones > cycloalkane > alkanes. The deep conversion was increased as reaction temperature was increased. A correlation was found between the reactivity of the individual and the strength of the weakest C-Hbond in structure. The conversion of volatile organic compounds increases in order methanol > benzene > cyclohexane > MEK > n-hexane. That is the effect of differences in total dissociation energy. An apparent zeroth-order kinetics with respect to inlet concentration have been observed. A simple multicomponent model based on two-stage redox model made reasonably good predictions of conversion over the range of parameters studied. thus, the catalytic process was suggested as the new VOCs control technology.
In this paper, a compact fully printable bandpass filter is suggested for a low-frequency channel 3.2 GHz ~ 3.7 GHz in the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) communication system. It is featured with a small geometry of $0.5{\lambda}_g/15$ and a low insertion loss despite using FR4 as a cheap substrate of a high dielectric loss. This is made possible by generating zeroth-order-resonance (ZOR) from one cell comprising two series resonances obviously separated from one shunt resonance as a third-order bandpass filter. Especially, the series resonance elements are combined with spur-lines bent by 90 degrees, which makes the port-impedance matched well and eliminates spurious hikes in the stopband, while the overall size remains almost unchanged. The design is carried out by setting up the equivalent circuit and the circuit simulation is checked by the full-wave EM analysis. The structure is manufactured and measured to show that the circuit modeling and EM simulation results agree with the measured data.
This paper describes on the leakage inductance calculations of superconducting (s/c) tranformer. When s/c transformer quenches, the magnetic energy stored in the leakage inductance dissipates in the form of Joule heating. So, it is highly desired to estimate the leakage inductances of a s/c transformer as it is designed. In this paper, we calculated the leakage inductance of sic transformer, using zeroth and first order model, and the calculated results were compared with the measured ones. It shows that 1st order model is enough to estimate the leakage inductacne of s/c transformer.

In order to achieve scale- and rotation-invariance in recognizing unoccluded objects in binary images using Zernike moment features, an image of an object has often been normalized first by its zeroth-order moment (ZOM) or area. With elongated objects such as characters, a stroke width varies with the threshold value used, it becomes one or two pixels wider or thinner. The variations of the total area of the character becomes significant when the character is relatively thin with respect to its overall size, and the resulting normalized moment features are no longer reliable. This dilation/erosion effect is more severe when the object is not focused precisely. In this paper, we analyze the ZOM method and propose as a normalization method, the maximum enclosing circle (MEC) centered at the centroid of the character. We compare both the ZOM and MEC methods in their performance through various experiments.
When a molecule is perturbed by an external field, the perturbed moecue can be described as a doubly perturbed system. Hartree-Fock operator in the absence of the field is the zeroth order Hamiltonian, and a correlation operator and the external field operator are perturbations. The effective Hamiltonian, which is a projection of the total Hamiltonian onto a small finite subspace (usually a valence space), has been formally derived. The influence of the external field to the molecular Hamiltonian itself has been examined within an effective Hamiltonian framework. The first order effective expectation values, for instance electromagnetic transition amplitudes, between valence states are found to be easily calculated - by simply taking matrix elements of the effective external field operator. Implications of the terms in perturbation expansion are discussed.
The aim of this work is to prepare a neutron noise calculator based on the second order of average current nodal expansion method (ACNEM). Generally, nodal methods have the ability to fulfill the neutronic analysis with adequate precision using coarse meshes as large as a fuel assembly size. But, for the zeroth order of ACNEM, the accuracy of neutronic simulations may not be sufficient when coarse meshes are employed in the reactor core modeling. In this work, the capability of second order ACNEM is extended for solving the neutron diffusion equation in the frequency domain using coarse meshes. For this purpose, two problems are modeled and checked including a slab reactor and 2D BIBLIS PWR. For validating of results, a semi-analytical solution is utilized for 1D test case, and for 2D problem, the results of both forward and adjoint neutron noise calculations are exploited. Numerical results indicate that by increasing the order of method, the errors of frequency dependent coarse mesh solutions are considerably decreased in comparison to the reference. Accordingly, the accuracy of second order ACNEM can be acceptable for the neutron noise calculations by using coarse meshes in the nuclear reactor core.
Destruction process of toluene using a wire-cylindrical BBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) reactor packed with catalysts was investigated to characterize the synergetic effects of non-thermal plasma and catalyst process. The catalysts used in the present study were ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$BO$_3$ and Pt/${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$. Under the numerous test conditions, specific energy density (SED (J/L)) and the conversion of toluene, defined as (1 -[C$_{f}$]/[C$_{i}$]), were measured. The test results showed that toluene decomposition efficiency followed the pseudo-first order in the case of plasma only process. The pseudo-first order process, however, was modified to pseudo-zeroth order reaction in the case of catalyst-assisted plasma process. This modification of the reaction order was verified based on a simple kinetic model proposed in the present study. Owing to the modification of reaction order, which resulted from the catalytic process, the specific energy to achieve the high removal efficiencies, i.e. 80~90%, was reduced significantly.y.y.
We studied the characteristics of annular phase gratings as spatial frequency filters. We first calculated the Fraunhofer diffraction patterns of annular gratings and then got the modulation transfer function (MTF) from the zeroth order Hankel transform of the intensity distribution function. Binaryphase annular grating shows higher diffraction efficiency than binary phase rectangular grating. But the MTF decreases linearly in the low-frequency region as that of rectangular grating does. The diffraction pattern of 4-phase annular grating is similar to that of 2-phase grating and hence MTFs of the two are much alike. For 8-phase annular grating, the 7th order diffracted beam is the lowest one next to the first. Consequently, the diffraction efficiency is very high and the MTF graph is curved upward. The diffracted beams except the first order are negligible and hence the MTF characteristics are more improved in the case of 16-phase grating. But the degree of improvement becomes lowered c(Impaled with 8-phase grating. We made a 16-phase annular grating and measured its MTF. The experimental result agrees well with the calculated one.
Governing equations and numerical solution methods are derived for the analysis of a combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal used in high performance steam turbines. A bulk flow is assumed for each combination-type-staggered-labyrinth cavity. Axial flow through a throttling labyrinth strip is determined by Neumann's leakage equation and circumferential flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in the labyrinth cavity. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion near the centered position. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal. Theoretical results of leakage and rotordynamic characteristics for the IP4-stage seal of USC (ultra super critical) steam turbine are shown with the effect of sump pressure, the number of throttling labyrinth strip, and rotor speed.
