In this paper, the wakes behind a square cylinder were simulated using two kinds of different turbulence models for the eddy viscosity concept such as the zero- and the one-equation model in which the former is the mixing length model and the latter is the k-equation model. For comparison between numerical and analytical solutions, we employed three skill assessments: the correlation coefficient(r) for the similarity of the wake shape, the error of maximum velocity difference(EMVD) for the accuracy of wake velocity and the ratio of drag coefficient(RDC) for the pressure distribution around the structure. On the basis of the numerical results, the feasibility of each model for wake simulation was discussed and a suitable value for the empirical constant was suggested in these turbulence models. The zero-equation model, known as the simplest turbulence model, overestimated the EMVD and its absolute mean error(AME) for r, EMVD and RDC was ranging from 20.3 % to 56.3 % for all test. But the AME by the one-equation model was ranging from 3.4 % to 19.9 %. The predicted values of the one-equation model substantially agreed with the analytical solutions at the empirical mixing length scale $L=0.6b_{1/2}$ with the AME of 3.4 %. Therefore it was concluded that the one-equation model was suitable for the wake simulation behind a square cylinder when the empirical constant for eddy viscosity would be properly chosen.
An evaluation of one zero-equation and two one-equation eddy viscosity-transport turbulence closure models as implemented CFDS(Characteristic Flux Difference Splitting ) code is presented herein. Comparisons of Baldwin-Lomax model as zero-equation and Baldwin-Barth and Spalart-Allmaras model as one-equation are presented for three test cases, first inlvolving the 3 dimensional supersonic flow at M=1.98 over tangent ogive cylinder, second involving the 2 dimensional transonic flow at M=0.79 over RAE 2822 airfoil, third involving the 3 dimensional transonic flow at M=0.84 over ONERA M6 wing. The numerical results of CFDS code will also examined through direct comparison with experimental data.
The first and second moments of response variables for SDOF systems with hysteretic nonlinearity are obtained by a direct linearization procedure. This adaptation in the implementation of well-known statistical linearization methods, provides concise, model-independent linearization coefficients that are well-suited for numerical solution. The method may be applied to systems which incorporate any hysteresis model governed by a differential constitutive equation, and may be used for zero or non-zero mean random vibration. The implementation eliminates the effort of analytically deriving specific linearization coefficients for new hysteresis models. In doing so, the procedure of stochastic analysis is made independent from the task of physical modeling of hysteretic systems. In this study, systems with three different hysteresis models are analyzed under various zero and non-zero mean Gaussian White noise inputs. Results are shown to be in agreement with previous linearization studies and Monte Carlo Simulation.
A diffusion model for a system subject to random shocks is introduced. It is assumed that the state of system is modeled by a Brownian motion with negative drift and an absorbing barrier at the origin. It is also assumed that the shocks coming to the system according to a Poisson process decrease the state of the system by a random amount. It is further assumed that a repairman arrives according to another Poisson process and repairs or replaces the system i the system, when he arrives, is in state zero. A forward differential equation is obtained for the distribution function of X(t), the state of the systme at time t, some boundary conditions are discussed, and several interesting characteristics are derived, such as the first passage time to state zero, F(0,t), the probability of the system being in state zero at time t, and F(0), the limit of F(0,t) as t tends to infinity.
This paper presents a mathematical model suitable for the calculation of laminated glass, i.e. glass plates combined with an interlayer material. The model is based on a beam differential equation for each glass plate and a separate differential equation for the slip in the interlayer. In addition to slip, the model takes into account prestressing force in the interlayer. It is possible to combine the two contributions arbitrarily, which is important because the glass sheet fabrication process changes the stiffness of the interlayer in ways that are not easily predictable and could introduce prestressing of varying magnitude. The model is suitable for reformulation into an inverse procedure for calculation of the relevant parameters. Model consisting of a system of differential-algebraic equations, proved too stiff for cases with the thin interlayer. This novel approach covers the full range of possible stiffnesses of layered glass sheets, i.e., from zero to infinite stiffness of the interlayer. The comparison of numerical and experimental results contributes to the validation of the model.
The reformer is one of the most important chemical processes for the production of high purity hydrogen from fossil fuel. This study compares zero-dimensional model with CFD models for reaction analysis of methane-steam reformer. The zero-dimensional model is an empirical equation, however CFD model uses reactions of Arrhenius type. Because the reaction coefficients of the steam-methane catalytic reforming have not been reported before in the form of Arrhenius type, the present study aims to find the appropriate reaction coefficients. The used CFD code is Fluent 6.2 version. Several models are compared for the case of various operating temperature, mass of catalyst and steam to methane ratio.
In this paper, the model reference adaptive control (MRAC) of a flexible structure is investigated. Any mechanically flexible structure is inherently distributed parameter in nature, so that its dynamics are described by a partial, rather than ordinary, differential equation. The MRAC problem is formulated as an initial value problem of coupled partial and ordinary differential equations in weak form. The well-posedness of the initial value problem is proved. The control law is derived by using the Lyapunov redesign method on an infinite dimensional filbert space. Uniform asymptotic stability of the closed loop system is established, and asymptotic tracking, i. e., convergence of the state-error to zero, is obtained. With an additional persistence of excitation condition for the reference model, parameter-error convergence to zero is also shown. Numerical simulations are provided.
In this study, we calculated arc discharges happened in high-voltage circuit breakers for understanding the complex physics and the probability of thermal breakdown. The four main parts of arc model for this virtual-reality are radiation, PTFE abaltion, Cu evaporation and turbulence. Among these important parts the turbulence model can be critical to the reliability of computation results during high-current period because the plasma flow is affected by high eat energy and mass momentum. Two kinds of turbulence model, zero-equation model and two-equation model, are applied for these calculations and are compared with the measured pressure data inside a chamber.
A plane-parallel model of the diffuse Galactic light (DGL) is calculated assuming exponential disks of interstellar dust and OB stars, by solving exactly the radiative transfer equation using an iterative method. We perform a radiative transfer calculation for a model with generally accepted scale heights of stellar and dust distribution and compare the results with those of van de Hulst & de Jong for a constant slab model. We also find that the intensity extrapolated to zero dust optical depth has a negative value, against to the usual expectation.
