  • This research is comprised of virtually simulating behavior while experiencing low gravity effects in advance of real world testing in low gravity aboard Zero Gravity Corporation's (Zero-G) research aircraft (727-200F). The experiment simulated a drill rig penetrating a regolith simulant. Regolith is a layer of loose, heterogeneous superficial deposits covering solid rock on surfaces of the Earth' moon, asteroids and Mars. The behavior and propagation of space debris when drilled in low gravity was tested through simulations and visualization in a leading dynamic simulation software as well as discrete element modeling software and in preparation for comparing to real world results from flying the experiment aboard Zero-G. The study of outer space regolith could lead to deeper scientific knowledge of extra-terrestrial surfaces, which could lead us to breakthroughs with respect to space mining or in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). These studies aimed to test and evaluate the drilling process in low to zero gravity environments and to determine static stress analysis on the drill when tested in low gravity environments. These tests and simulations were conducted by a team from Texas A&M University's Department of Construction Science, the United States Air Force Academy's Department of Astronautical Engineering, and Crow Industries

  • The membrane filter coated with nanostructured porous surface layer was made by heat treatment after depositing nanoparticles onto a conventional micron-fibrous metal filter as a substrate filter. The nanostructured porous layer membrane filter (NSPL-MF), whose the filtration performance was improved compared with the conventional metal membrane filters, was developed by coating the nanoparticle agglomerates of dendrite structure onto the micron-fibrous metal filter. Pressure drop of nanostructured porous layer membrane filter decreased with increasing the heat treatment temperature to make the nanostructured porous layer adhered on the filter surface because the nanoparticle agglomerates shrank, but filtration efficiency did not decrease clearly.

  • In this work, using the exact separatrix map which provides an efficient way to describe dynamics near the separatrix, we study the stochastic layer near the separatrix of a one-degree-of-freedom Hamilitonian system with time periodic perturbation. Applying the twist map theory to the exact separatrix map, T. Ahn, G. I. Kim and S. Kim proved the existence of the uniformly hyperbolic invariant set(UHIS) near separatrix. Using the theorems of Bowen and Franks, we prove this UHIS has measure zero.

  • Traditional descriptions of water movement in soils and of calculations of infiltration rates neglect the air movement and its compressibility. The movement of two fluids in the bounded layered porous medium is treated analytically and computer simulations are conducted for given boundary conditions and initial saturation profiles. The movement of a given saturation across the interface between the different soil layers is theoretically developed by considering the conservation of mass. It is shown that the existence of the interface affects the infiltration rate when the average total velocity is greater than zero. The transition from one layer to another layer cause a change in the capillary drive and consequently influences the infiltration rate.

  • The radiation characteristics of a slot antenna in a plane conductor covered with a miving isotropic plasma layer are analyzed. The radiation null which causes distortion in radiation pattern is explainted by the zero of integrand in an asymptotic integral for radiation fields as a function of the plasma parameter and the plasma velocity. Numerical resutls for a radiation null calculated from various plasma and velocity parameters correspond to the results of two-dimensional problem.

  • An active layer distributed on surface of an extreme cold region causes a frost heave by repeating the freezing and thawing according to the seasonal temperature change. Since the height of frost heave is greatly affected by the thickness of active layer, an accurate evaluation of the thickness of active layer is necessary for the safe design and construction of the infrastructure in the extreme cold region. In this study, dynamic cone penetrometer, which is miniaturized in-situ penetration device, is applied for the evaluation of active layer depth distribution. As the application tests, two dynamic cone penetration tests were conducted on the study sites located in Solomon and Alaska. In addition, ground temperature variations were obtained. As the results of the application tests, the depth of interface between the active layer and the permafrost was evaluated from the difference in dynamic cone penetration indexes of the active layer and the permafrost, and a layer was detected around the interface considered as an ice lens layer. Also, the interface depths between the above zero and the below zero temperature determined from the ground temperature variations correspond with the interface depths evaluated from the dynamic cone penetration tests. This study demonstrates that the dynamic cone penetrometer may be a useful tool for the evaluation of the active layer in the extreme cold region.

  • The frost penetration depth of pavement is usually estimated from the freezing index that made temperature data analysis of 30 years and decided the thickness of anti-frost layer. The field monitoring region in study was divided into five regions by freezing index 550~650$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, 450~550$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day and 350~450$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day. Each region has three-section of road pavement such as cutting area, boundary area of cutting and banking, and lower area of banking. The field monitoring system was established both in the section of anti-frost layer and in the section without anti-frost layer. The data analysis was conducted for determination of frost penetration depth within the paved road by the field monitoring system. The result showed that The temperature of subgrade without anti-frost layer shows below zero in centigrade for the region of freezing index 550~650$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, up and down around zero degree in subgrade for the region of freezing index 450~550$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, and there is no place existed below zero degree in subgrade for the region of freezing index below 450$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day. With comparison of field frost penetration depth for the cross-sections of pavement, the cutting area shows the greatest frost penetration depth, and less influence of frost penetration depth for the boundary area of cutting and banking, and the least influenced for the lower area of banking.

  • Here we consider the inertial effect in a horizontal mushy layer during solidification of a binary alloy. Using perturbation technique, we obtain two systems, one of zero order and the other of first order. We consider a mushy layer with an impermeable mush-liquid interface and of constant permeability. The analysis reveals that the effect of inertial parameter is stabilizing in the sense that the critical Rayleigh number at the onset of motion increases by the inertial effect.

  • This paper investigates the effect of the electrode edge of a patterned vertical alignment (PVA) liquid crystal (LC) device on the viewing angle characteristics. In general, a transmissive LCD applies an LC layer with half-wave retardation for a bright state and with zero retardation for a dark state. The retardation of the LC layer would be distorted in each point, however, when a voltage is applied because of the non-uniform voltage distribution in the electrode edge effect. In this paper, the feasibility of the full effect of the electrode edge on the viewing angle property is considered, and the optical viewing angles of the VA LCD with a uniform half-wave LC layer and the PVA LCD with a practical non-uniform LC layer are compared.

  • In this paper, a high gain patch antenna using a single layer metamaterial superstrate with a near-to-zero refractive index (n) is proposed. Simulations for an ordinary patch antenna and our proposed metamaterial patch antenna were conducted. Our proposed metamaterial patch antenna was implemented and measured. The gain of our proposed metamaterial patch antenna is 6.77dB higher than that of an ordinary patch antenna.
