  • The removal property of magnetic zeolite for the adsorption of aqueous ammonium ion was examined in this work. The surface modified magnetic zeolite was produced by hydrothermal synthesis. The complex of zeolite and $Fe_3O_4$ was established by the observation of SEM and XRD analysis and less than 12.6% of $Fe_3O_4$ content in magnetic zeolite was observed in the form of $Fe_3O_4$ particles. The optimum pH of adsorption was shown around 8 and the maximum adsorption linearly decreased with the increase of $Fe_3O_4$ content. The adsorption isotherm for aqueous ammonium ion was approximated by Langmuir equation. The developed surface modified magnetic zeolite adsorbent was recommended to control the nitrogen pollution for wetland environment system.

  • Zeolite X adsorbents with large surface area were prepared for using oxygen PSA adsorbent. Selective adsorption performance of nitrogen on the synthesized zeolite X adsorbent was improved by the cation exchange of adsorbent. The zeolite X which had over $650m^2/g$ surface area was synthesized at the conditions of $SiO_2\;:\;Na_2O\;:\;H_2O\;:\;Al_2O_3$ = 2.5 : 3.5 : 150 : 1 mole ratio, $98^{\circ}C$ temperature and 18 h synthesized time in 50 L reactor. The metal ions Li, Ag, Ca, Br, Sr, etc. were investigated for ion exchange with zeolite X. Ag ion was showed the highest ion exchange rate among these metal ions and all metal ions were exchanged with Na ion at equivalent rate. Compared with the NaX adsorbent, the ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent remarkably improved its adsorption performance of nitrogen at the conditions of $10{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ temperature and 0~9 atm pressure. At an equilibrium pressure under 0.5 atm, adsorption performance of nitrogen on the ion exchanged zeolite adsorbent increased in the order of Ag > Li > Ca > Sr> Ba > K, whereas at an equilibrium pressure over 1 atm showed in the order of Li > Ag > Ca > Sr > Ba > K. Nitrogen/oxygen separation factor of Li ion exchanged zeolite X adsorbent was 13.023 at the partial pressure of nitrogen/oxygen gas mixture similar to air and $20^{\circ}C$ adsorption temperature.

  • The effects of ammonium ion on cell growth kinetics, monoclonal antibody productivity, and cell metabolism of hybridoma cells were investigated. The mouse-mouse hybridoma cell line VlIIH-8 producing mouse IgG2a was used as a model system. Ammonium ion showed an inhibitory effect on cell growth and monoclonal antibody production. New immobilized adsorbents were developed for the reduction of the inhibitory effect of ammonium ion. The ammonium ion selective zeolite, Phillipsite-Gismondine was entrapped in calcium alginate bead or in dialysis membrane and applied to the hybridoma cell culture system for the in situ removal of ammonium ion from culture media. The effects of ammonium the both serum supplemented and serum free media on the cell growth were studied by applying immobilized adsorbents of calcium alginate bead type. The results demonstrated a substantial enhancement in cell growth. Applying immobilized adsorbents of dialysis membrane type to serum supplemented media also resulted in the stimulation of cell growth, cell viability and monoclonal antibody production.

  • Various active carbons were made from plant sources of coconut shell, pine tree, oak tree and lignite coal. Pore characteristics of these adsorbents were investigated. 1, With increasing activation time, specific surface area and pore volume increased, but the development of micropores was limited at a certain level. The average pore diameter, by BET, of coconut active carbon was 15.5-21.8$\AA$ and that of lignite carbon was 15.6-31.3$\AA$. The pore diameters of silica-gel, sepiolite and zeolite was 30.9$\AA$, 58.6$\AA$ and 55.7$\AA$, respectively. 2. The Horvath - Kawazoe micropore diameter of coconut shell active carbon was under 10.5$\AA$ and that of the other active carbon was under 20.9$\AA$ but silica-gel 33$\AA$, sepiolite 103 $\AA$ and zeolite was unexpectedly large to be 175$\AA$. From the difference between BET micropore diameter and Howath - Kawazoe diameter, it could be said that silica - gel has comparatively uniform pore diameter but sepiolite and zeolite have very uneven diameter. 3. Total pore volume of coconut shell active carbon was 0.27-1.04 cm3/g but that of the other active carbon, 0.23-0.62 cm3/g, was much lower than that of coconut shell active carbon. Hydrophilic adsorbent silica - gel and sepiolite showed big difference in specific surface area, but pore volumes of these were 0.47 and 0.56 cm3/g showing similar value and micropore volumes of these were, respectively, 0.06 cm3/g and 0.04 cm3/g. Total pore volume of zeolite was 0.1 cm3/g and that of micropore was only 0.02 cm3/g.

  • This study focused on the development of effective adsorbent to remove acetylenes for the purification of isoprene. The adsorbents with various pore sizes from $4{\AA}$ to $5{\AA}$ were prepared to investigate the effect of pore size on selective adsorption of acetylene as an impurity. The pore size of zeolite A was adjusted by ion-exchange between Na and Ca ions. The pore size of adsorbents has affected the removal of acetylenes selectively because of the kinetic diameter of acetylenes, such as 2-methyl-1-butyne-3-yen (IPA) and 2-butyne. In a batch adsorption experiment, 5A zeolite with pore size of $5{\AA}$ showed the highest removal capacity of 2-butyne. However, IPA was hardly removed from isoprene by the A-type zeolites. For the adsorption isotherm, modified Langmuir model was well fitted with 2-butyne adsorption. Moreover, the regeneration of adsorbent was carried out to determine optimum method. The adsorbent heated for 12 h at $300^{\circ}C$ was regenerated significantly.

  • Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology using reusable energy is a plausible process to capture $CO_2$ from non-point sources. In this paper, adsorption and desorption were repeatedly tested using low concentration $CO_2$. Three types of adsorbents were examined in cyclic $CO_2$ adsorption and thermal regeneration. Adsorption capacities of zeolite 5A, zeolite 13X and activated carbon were 21 mg/g, 12 mg/g and 6 mg/g, respectively. Zeolite 5A shows the highest adsorption capacities after cyclic thermal regeneration.

  • This study deals with the effect of pretreatment on the $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of zeolitic adsorbents including a commercial A-type zeolite and cation exchanged adsorbents. The pre-heating could change the intrinsic properties such as specific surface area and adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. As a result of the experiment, the moisture previously filled inside might affect the potential adsorption capacity of the adsorbent, and could be disappeared throughout the heat treatment. An optimum pretreatment temperature for the test adsorbent was found to be $400^{\circ}C$, at which temperature enabled more than 90% refreshment. Precise examination through the TPD test showed that the TSA (Temperature Swing Adsorption) process would be desirable in dry adsorption of $CO_2$.

  • In order to enhance the adsorption capacity of $CO_2$, a commercial zeolite and coal fly ash were chemically modified with alkali cations (Li, K) and alkaline-earth cations (Ca, Mg). Adsorbents containing Ca and Mg showed slightly lower surface areas. The adsorption capacity at the ambient temperature was highest with Ca, then in order of Mg, Li, and K. On the contrary, regeneration efficiency of the adsorbents with Ca and Mg was relatively low, because Ca and Mg cations had stronger affinity of carbon dioxide. The affinity between cations and $CO_2$ molecule also may improve the selectivity in favor of $CO_2$ adsorption.

  • Gas adsorption on adsorbents depends on temperatures and pressures. When these parameters are fixed, the adsorption capability and selectivity can not be changed. If the gas adsorption is controlled by another factor like electromagnetic field, the adsorption and desorption can be managed by much intentional way. The microwave has characteristics to excite particular components such as water without destroying it. In this study, microwave was irradiated to the adsorbent of an NaY zeolite which is almost transparent to microwave. As vapor of 1, 1, 2- trichloro-1, 2, 2-trifluoroethane (CFC-113) and water flowed simultaneously on the zeolite packed in a column at room temperature, only water was adsorbed. The . adsorbed water was removed from the zeolite and then replaced by CFC-113, since the microwave was irradiated. Greater the power of microwave was, more CFC-113 was adsorbed. The water adsorption took place again after a latent period by stopping the microwave irradiation.

  • Carbon dioxide is an undesired component of biogas and landfill gas. As a result, it needs to be removed from these mixtures in order to increase their heating value and reduce corrosion during treatment. Zeolites are a class of microporous materials that can be used as adsorbents for the separation of carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. In this work, the pure gas adsorption isotherms of methane and carbon dioxide and the selectivity of their mixture onto LTA-4A, FAU-13X and FAU-NaY adsorbents at temperatures of 273, 298 and 323 K and pressures up to 30 bars were calculated by the Monte Carlo method. Also, the influence of a flexible framework in a set of zeolites on the separation of methane and carbon dioxide was studied. Carbon dioxide adsorption onto the zeolites used in this work was more favorable than methane adsorption. The FAU-13X adsorbent had the highest adsorption capacity among the studied adsorbents. However, the selectivity of carbon dioxide over methane for LTA-4A was the highest. The adsorption capacities of a rigid framework were higher than those of a flexible framework. The influence of the framework flexibility in FAU on adsorption capacity was small. In contrast, its influence on selectivity seemed to be much larger.
