  • In this study, porosity estimation was conducted by the physical properties of zeolite. Because of the difficulty of directly measuring the porosity of particulate matter, the porosity was calculated by applying the measured physical properties of zeolite to the calculation formula presented in various literature. For this purpose, the average particle size, particle size distribution, specific surface area, and pore characteristics of three types of zeolite - zeolite beta, zeolite Y, and ZSM-5 - were measured. In addition, the true density using gas and liquid phases, and two types apparent density (tap and untapped density) were measured. We calculated the porosity using these results, compare and analyzed the results, and evaluated main factors that determine the porosity.

  • Effects of the zeolite particle size on the soil chemical properties and on rice growth was investigated on the pot with the loamy sand (Sadu series) and silty clay loam(Paju series) soils. All the zeolite treatments brought the increase of unhulled grain yield on the both loamy sand and silty clay loam soils. Unhulled grain yield increased with increasing the amount of zeolite applied and with decreasing the amount of particle size of zeolite applied on both soils. Unhulled grain yield increased significantly by 11.1% (22.79g/head) with 2ton/10a of smaller than $106{\mu}m$ size zeolite on the loamy sand soil and on the silty clay loam soil, yield increased by 9.3% (24.98g/head) with 1.5ton/10a of smaller than $106{\mu}m$ size zeolite. CEC, pH and contents of exchangeable cations of the soil after experiment were raised by increasing the amount of zeolite and also by decreasing the particle size of zeolite at both soil. At the heading stage, the zeolite treatments improved the growth of rice plant compared to control. The nutrient contents(T-N, Ca, Mg, K, Na), except phosphorus, in the rice plant grown on the zeolite treated soils were higher than control plot.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the proper particle size of Zeolite particle as the soil conditioner for sandy soil. On sand columns filled with different size of sand fractions, Zeolite particles of different size were applied. Tap water was percolated through those columns under the same water level as paddy soil during rice growth. The > 0.1mm fraction of Zeolite was not vertically moved although the water was percolated for 96 hours. The < 0.1mm fraction of Zeolite was moved out 85.7% in 2-1mm, 32.64% in 1-0.5mm, and 24.5% in 0.5-0.25mm sand column, respectively. The proper diameter of Zeolite particle for amelioration of sandy soils widely distributed around river side in Korea was estimated as 0.25-0.1mm fraction in consideration of its pore size.

  • The ammonium ion exchange characteristics of natural zeolite were investigated to remove ${NH_4}^+-N$. The effect of water temperature, particle size and competitive cation on the exchange capacity was examined. Ammonium ion exchange capacity tended to decrease when the temperature increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$. Exchange capacity was increased according to the particle size of natural zeolite comes to be small. Batch isotherm experiments were conducted for measuring ammonium ion exchange capacity. The ion exchange capacity was well described either by the Langmuir isotherm model or by the Freundlich isotherm model. The ammonium ion exchange capacity ($q_m$) of zeolite carrier can be calculated $11.744mg-{NH_4}^+/g$-carrier. The ion exchange capacity of manufactured zeolite carrier was showed a similar tendency as ion exchange capacity of powder-sized natural zeolite. Therefore, zeolite carrier can be used for increasing of nitrogen removal efficiency in the wastewater treatment plants.

  • The cure characteristics of metal particle filled DGEBA/MDA/SN/ zeolite epoxy resin composite system for EMI shielding were investigated by dynamic DSC run method and FT-lR spectroscopy. As the heating rate increased, the peak temperature on dynamic DSC curve increased because of the rapid cure reaction. From the straight line of the Kissinger plot, the curing reaction activation energy and pre-exponential factor could be obtained. As the post-curing time at 15$0^{\circ}C$ increased, the glass increased the glass transition temperature or the thermal stability increased. When the post curing time is too long, the system filled with metallic Al particle can be thermally oxidized by the catalytic reaction of metal filler and the thermal stability of the composite for the EMI shielding application may be decreased.

  • The effect of synthesis condition, type of starting materials, mole ratio, mixing. aging, and crystallization temperature and time, on the size of FAU-type zeolite has been studied. Different mixing route may lead to the different phase of zeolite even with the same starting materials. In general, the size of particles is smaller after aging, especially at lower aging temperature. Two step mixture gel preparation method resulted to not only the reduction of crystallization time but also that of particle size, but without the aging of two mixture gels before the preparation of the overall gel in the second step, only the crystallization time was reduced, not the particle size. The FAU-type zeolite with average particle size 0.4$\mu$m and BET surface area 838 $m^2$/g was obtained from starting materials of liquid sodium silicate, sodium aluminate, and sodium hydroxide with two step preparation of mixture gel, aging of the mixture gels in two steps, which effectively reduced the crystallization time and particle size.

  • In this research a adsorbent, PVA-Zeolite bead, was prepared by immobilizing zeolite with PVA. The results of XRD and SEM analysis showed that the prepared PVA-Zeolite beads had porous structure and the zeolite particles were in mobilized within the internal matrix of the beads. The adsorption properties of Sr ion and Cs ion with the adsorbent were studied by different parameters such as effect of pH, adsorption rate, and adsorption isotherm. The adsorption of Sr ion and Cs ion reached equilibrium after 540 minutes. The adsorption kinetics of both ions by the PVA-Zeolite beads were fitted well by the pseudo-second-order model more than pseudo-first-order model. The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Sr ion and Cs ion calculated from Langmuir isotherm model were 52.08 mg/g and 58.14 mg/g, respectively. The external mass transfer step was very fast compared to the intra-particle diffusion step in the adsorption process of Cs ion and Sr ion by the PVA-Zeolite beads. This result implied that the rate controlling step was the intra-particle diffusion step.

  • Ammonium ion is notorious for the adverse effects upon many of the important uses of water such as toxcity to fish, corrosion of metals and concrete, and concern over man's consumption. A clinoptilolite, which is a naturally occurring zeolite selective for ammonium ion exchange, has been used. Batch isotherm experiments were conducted for measuring ammonium ion exchange capacity. The ion exchange capacity was well described either by the Langmuir equation or by the Freundlich equation. As the particle size of the clinoptilolite decreased, exchange capacity was increased. The smaller particle size enhaced the exchange of ammonium ion due to the greater surface area and decreased diffusion to the exchange sites within the zeolite. Ammonium ion exchange capacity tended to decrease when the temperature increased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$, and the temperature correction factor was found to be 0.98 in the Langmuir equation.

  • The effects of raw material feeding procedures and gelation temperatures on zeolite synthesis are investigated. Thus, the synthesis of zeolite 4A from sodium aluminate and sodium silicate solutions is chosen as a model reaction, for which equi-molar hydrogelation is performed with variation of feeding procedures and gelation temperatures. The formation of crystal nuclei, often being referred to as precursors, is induced under different conditions, the variation being examined by means of viscosity and water contents. The final products of zeolite 4A are evaluated by XRD, SEM morphology, particle size analysis and cation exchange capacity. Evidence shows that the viscosity of the initial products and their water contents are markedly influenced by the feeding methods of the reactant materials and by the gelation temperature. Further, it is found that the gelation at an elevated temperatures near 7$0^{\circ}C$ can be made possible through modification of mixing procedures. This provides convenient means of controlling the particle size of the final products. In this regard, a continuous flow-type mixing technique is proposed, which is demonstrated to be superior to the conventional batch-type mixings. The significance of this finding may lie in savings of equipment as well as energy costs, especialy on a large scale commercialization of zeolite production.

  • From leaching of Korean native halloysite with hot sulfuric acid, active species of siliceous aluminosilicate are obtained as residue, which gives the mole ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 10 and substantially removes most acid-soluble impurities. By dissolving the residue in sodium hydroxide at an ambient temperature sodium silicate solution is prepared, this is used for zeolite synthesis as one of starting materials. In order to prepare zeolite Type 4A thereform, addition of a proper aluminum source is made so that the composition of the reactant materials may be of the following mole ratios : Na2O/SiO2=1.2-1.5, SiO2/Al2O3=1.8-2.0 and H2O/Na2O=34-45 By careful control of ageing time and temperature, subsequent crystal growth is induced into microfine zeolite 4A, which gives optimum particle size distributjion being suitable for detergent builder. The zeolite products thus obtained and highly competitive with those from the use of the refined clay in comparison of their calcium exchange capacity, whiteness and particle size distribution. The present method shows a marginal advantage over the existing procedures requiring neitherseparate purification nor calcinating otherwise necessary for the raw clay ores in use.
