  • The structures of dehydrated Ca4Na4-A (a=12.243(1) Å) and of its bromine sorption complex (a=12.214(1) Å) have been determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space groupPm&bar{3}m at 21(1) ℃. Both crystals were dehydrated at 360 ℃ and 2 X 10-3 Torr for 2 days and one crystal was treated with 180 Torr of bromine vapor at 24 ℃ for 1 h. The structures were refined to final error indices, R1=0.066 and R2=0.078 with 192 reflections and R1=0.109 and R2=0.093 with 100 reflections, respectively, for which I>3σ(I). In these structures, four Ca2+ and four Na+ ions are located on two different threefold axes associated with 6-ring oxygens, respectively. In Ca4Na4-A·6Br2, four Ca2+ ions are recessed 0.28(1) Å into the large cavity and four Na+ ions extend 0.63(1) Å into the sodalite unit. A total of six dibromine molecules are sorbed per unit cell. Each Br2 molecule approaches a framework oxide ion axially with O(1)-Br(1)=3.27(2) Å Br(1)-Br(2)=2.66(6) Å and O(1)-Br(1)-Br(2)=172(1)°, indicating a charge-transfer interaction.

  • A novel technology for homogeneous deposition of zeolite particles on a porous support was developed so that those particles played a seeding role for the growth of zeolite crystals. After the particles were dispersed in water, the aqueous solution was 134 through the bore of a porous tubular support. By keeping the other side of the support in a vacuum, the aqueous solution passed through the pores of the support, leading the particles to be homogeneously deposited on the support. The amount of the deposited particles was investigated by changing the following operating parameters: a particle concentration in the solution, a time for deposition, and the feeding rate of the solution. The amount of the deposited particles increased from 0.0019 g to 0.0208 g as the concentration of the particles was changed from 0.01 wt% to 0.3 wt%, while the feeding rate and the deposition time were kept to 100 mL/min and 4 min, respectively. As the deposition time was varied from 1 min to 4 min, the deposition amount increased from 0.0004g to 0.0019g at the typical condition of the rest parameters. Also, it was observed that the deposited weight increased from 0.0029 g to 0.01 g as the feeding rate increased from 100 mL/min to 300 mL/min. However, the total permeance of water and ethanol decreased through the zeolite membrane as the deposited weight increased.

  • Carbon dioxide is an undesired component of biogas and landfill gas. As a result, it needs to be removed from these mixtures in order to increase their heating value and reduce corrosion during treatment. Zeolites are a class of microporous materials that can be used as adsorbents for the separation of carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. In this work, the pure gas adsorption isotherms of methane and carbon dioxide and the selectivity of their mixture onto LTA-4A, FAU-13X and FAU-NaY adsorbents at temperatures of 273, 298 and 323 K and pressures up to 30 bars were calculated by the Monte Carlo method. Also, the influence of a flexible framework in a set of zeolites on the separation of methane and carbon dioxide was studied. Carbon dioxide adsorption onto the zeolites used in this work was more favorable than methane adsorption. The FAU-13X adsorbent had the highest adsorption capacity among the studied adsorbents. However, the selectivity of carbon dioxide over methane for LTA-4A was the highest. The adsorption capacities of a rigid framework were higher than those of a flexible framework. The influence of the framework flexibility in FAU on adsorption capacity was small. In contrast, its influence on selectivity seemed to be much larger.

  • The adsorptive removal of organic sulfur compounds including tert-butylmercaptane(TBM), tetrahydrothiophene(THT) and dimethylsulfide(DMS) in methane was investigated over NaY and copper-exchanged NaY(CuNaY) zeolites at 303 K and atmospheric pressure. In the ternary adsorption system, the preferential adsorption of THT over other sulfur compounds on NaY and the concurrent adsorption of all sulfur compounds on CuNaY were achieved, which could be explained by the breakthrough curve, the temperature-programmed desorption, and the apparent activation energy for desorption. The sulfur uptake capacity of CuNaY(2.90~3.20 mmol/g) was much higher than that of NaY(0.70~0.90 mmol/g). A comparative study indicated that the $Cu^{1+}$ sites and acidity of CuNaY were probably responsible for the strong interaction with sulfur atom and high sulfur uptake abilities.

  • Four different types of chitosan-based nanocomposite films were prepared using a solvent casting method by incorporating with four types of nanoparticles, i.e., an unmodified montmorillonite (Na-MMT), an organically modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B), a Nano-silver, and a Ag-zeolite (Ag-Ion). X-ray diffraction patterns of the nanocomposite films indicated that a certain degree of intercalation was formed in the nanocomposite films, with the highest intercalation in the Na-MMT-incorporated films followed by films with Cloisite 30B and Ag-Ion. SEM micrographs showed that in all the nanocomposite films, except the Nanosilver-incorporated one, nanoparticles were dispersed homogeneously throughout the chitosan polymer matrix. Consequently, mechanical and barrier properties of chitosan films were affected through intercalation of nanoparticles, i.e., tensile strength (TS) increased by 7-16%, while water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased by 25-30% depending on the nanoparticle material tested. In addition, chitosan-based nanocomposite films, especially silver-containing ones, showed a promising range of antimicrobial activity.

  • This study aimed to fundamentally understand structural changes of zeolite under pressure and in the presence of different pressure-transmitting media (PTM) for application studies such as immobilization of heavy metal cation or CO2 storage using pressure. High-pressure X-ray powder diffraction study was conducted on the zeolite-W (K6.4Al6.5Si25.8O64× 15.3H2O, K-MER) to understand linear compressibility and the bulk moduli in different PTM conditions. Zeolite-w is a synthetic material having the same framework as natural zeolite merlinoite ((K, Ca0.5, Ba0.5, Na)10 Al10Si22O64× 22H2O). The space group of the sample was identified as I4/mmm belonging to the tetragonal crystal system. Water, carbon dioxide, and silicone-oil were used as pressure-transmitting media. The mixture of sample and each PTM was mounted in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and then pressurized up to 3 GPa with an increment of ca. 0.5 GPa. Pressure-induced changes of powder diffraction patterns were measured using a synchrotron X-ray light source. Lattice constants, and bulk moduli were calculated using the Le-Bail method and the Birch-Murnaghan equation. In all PTM conditions, linear compressibility of c-axis (𝛽c) was 0.006(1) GPa-1 or 0.007(1) GPa-1. On the other hand, the linear compressibility of a(b)-axis (𝛽a) was 0.013(1) GPa-1 in silicone-oil run, which is twice more compressible than the a(b)-axis in water and carbon dioxide runs, 𝛽a = 0.006(1) GPa-1. The bulk moduli were measured as 50(3) GPa, 52(3) GPa, and 29(2) GPa in water, carbon dioxide, and silicone-oil run, respectively. The orthorhombicities of ac-plane in the water, and carbon dioxide runs were comparatively constant, near 0.350~0.353, whereas the value decreased abruptly in the silicone-oil run following formula, y = -0.005(1)x + 0.351(1) by non-penetrating pressure fluid condition.

  • Hydrogen, a clean energy source free of COx emissions, is poised to replace fossil fuels, with its usage on the rise. Despite its high energy content per unit mass, hydrogen faces limitations in storage and transportation due to its low storage density and challenges in long-term storage. In contrast, ammonia offers a high storage capacity per unit volume and is relatively easy to liquefy, making it an attractive option for storing and transporting large volumes of hydrogen. While NH3 decomposition is an endothermic reaction, achieving excellent low-temperature catalytic activity is essential for process efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The study examined the effects of different zeolite types (5A, NaY, ZSM5) on NH3 decomposition activity, considering differences in pore structure, cations, and Si/Al-ratio. Notably, the 5A zeolite facilitated the high dispersion of Ni across the surface, inside pores, and within the structure. Its low Si/Al ratio contributed to abundant acidity, enhancing ammonia adsorption. Additionally, the presence of Na and Ca cations in the support created medium basic sites that improved N2 desorption rates. As a result, among the prepared catalysts, the 15 wt%Ni/5A catalyst exhibited the highest NH3 conversion and a high H2 formation rate of 23.5 mmol/gcat·min (30,000 mL/gcat·h, 600 ℃). This performance was attributed to the strong metal-support interaction and the enhancement of N2 desorption rates through the presence of medium basic sites.

  • The crystal structure of dehydrated, partially Co(II)-exchanged zeolite X, stoichiometry Co2+Na+-X (Co41+Na10Si100Al92O384) per unit cell, has been determined from three-dimensional X-ray diffraction data gathered by counter methods. The structure was solved and refined in the cubic space group Fd3:α=24.544(1)Å at 21(1)℃. The crystal was prepared by ion exchange in a flowing stream using a solution 0.025 M each in Co(NO3)2 and Co(O2CCH3)2. The crystal was then dehydrated at 380℃ and 2×10-6 Torr for two days. The structure was refined to the final error indices, R1=0.059 and R2=0.046 with 211 reflections for which I > 3σ(I). Co2+ ions and Na+ ions are located at the four different crystallographic sites. Co2+ ions are located at two different sites of high occupancies. Sixteen Co2+ ions are located at the center of the double six-ring (site I; Co-O = 2.21(1)Å, O-Co-O = 90.0(4)°) and twenty-five Co2+ ions are located at site II in the supercage. Twenty-five Co2+ ions are recessed 0.09Å into the supercage from its three oxygen plane (Co-O = 2.05(1)Å, O-Co-O = 119.8(7)°). Na+ ions are located at two different sites of occupandies. Seven Na+ ions are located at site II in the supercage (Na-O = 2.29(1)Å, O-Na-O = 102(1)°). Three Na+ ions are statistically distribyted over site III, a 48-fold equipoint in the supercages on twofold axes (Na-O = 2.59(10)Å, O-Na-O = 69.0(3)°). Seven Na+ ions are recessed 1.02Å into the supercage from the three oxygen plane. It appears that Co2+ ions prefer sites I and II in order, and that Na+ ions occupy the remaining sites, II and III.
